Welcome to Express Way The
Meet us on
In the spirit of Easter, our team were busy bunnies last month having lots of fun and laughter in the office.
To see what we got up to, follow us on TikTok and check out our recent uploads, including a ‘Meet the Team’ video where we spill the beans on our accounts managers’ and marketers’ office habits!
Find out who loves a lunchtime nap and who eats all their lunch before 10am!
Why not try getting your team together and having some fun on TikTok. This can be a great way to get everyone laughing, boost team morale and remove some of the everyday stresses of your nine to five.
Time to dust off your camera, brush those pearly whites and get creating!
The Express Way is this month not only focussing on dental care, but mental care too by looking at what as an industry we could be doing better to improve our mental health.
When it comes to patient wellbeing overall, there is a huge amount of crossover between mental health and dental health with the two often going hand in hand.
Speaking of hands, we are also concentrating on hand hygiene and how important proper hand care is for infection control and protecting patients.
We hope you enjoy!
Comfort & freedom!
Inside this issue we also want to
raise awareness of the importance of feeling great at work. We offer a wide range of workwear with many different colours, textures, styles and sizes, for all tastes and budgets.
Whatever your role in the dental team, what you wear can have a big impact on not only how you feel physically, but mentally too
This is because uniform can promote a sense of pride, belonging and self-assurance. It negates the concerns over what to wear and whether your choice of attire will be ‘acceptable’ and meet with the approval of others.
From my experience working in a busy dental practice, I found that it was really important to wear comfortable but also fashionable clothing. I found that this made me more confident and proud when I was talking to patients, plus it boosted my morale. ”

How Venus Bulk Flow ONE can streamline
Venus Bulk Flow One from Kulzer is the first flowable one-shade bulk-filling composite that does not require the need for an additional composite capping layer.
Its unique combination of physical properties makes it the ideal composite in cases with little patient compliance or time. In other words, it can alleviate A LOT of headaches!
Don’t all bulk fill flowable composites need a capping layer?
Most flowable bulk fills require an additional layer of conventional resin-based composite to cap the restoration.
This is because flowable bulk fills have a lower viscosity (lower filler content) and therefore reduced wear resistance and hardness properties.
For this reason, flowable bulk fill composites have come to be referred to as a bulk fill base.
Venus Bulk Flow ONE removes the need for an additional capping layer because of its low shrinkage stress, high flexural strength and high wear resistance.
These properties ensure durable restorations that withstand the high mastication loads at the back of the mouth.
Venus Bulk Flow ONE adapts to any tooth shade from A1 to D4 ” “
Can Venus Bulk Flow ONE still be used with a capping layer?
Yes, Venus Bulk flow ONE can also be used with a capping layer in a traditional bulk fill base restoration technique. This might be advisable in big cavities or cusp placements.
Using Venus Bulk Flow ONE without a capping layer is most beneficial in all clinical cases where a flowable viscosity is ideal during placement. This includes small cavities or those with tunnel preps, class III restorations with intact labial wall or class V restorations.
What is its curing depth?
Venus Bulk Flow ONE can be placed and cured in increments of up to 4mm inside a cavity.
What is a one-shade composite?
One-shade composites are resin composites used to restore multiple shades of tooth structure using a single shade. They are often referred to as universal composites. The technology used in universal composites varies from product to product, but most incorporate silica particle into a resin matrix that allows the material to reflect the colour of the adjacent tooth structure and blend to the surrounding teeth.
Kulzer refers to this colour adaptation as ‘Adaptive Light Matching’ and the effect of a restoration becoming virtually invisible is often referred to as the ‘chameleon effect’. Venus Bulk Flow ONE adapts to any tooth shade from A1 to D4.
The benefits of opting for a one-shade composite include:
• Minimises the number of shades needed in practice.
• Wide colour-matching ability takes guesswork out of shade selection.
• Reduce costs.
• Less time re-ordering multiple products.
• Less chance of composites expiring and going to waste.
• Eliminating shade matching step can reduce chair time.
In cases of severe discolouration, Kulzer’s tooth-coloured opaque shade Venus Diamond Flow OM (Opaque Medium) can be used.
Is Venus Bulk Flow ONE radiopaque?
Yes, Venus Bulk Flow ONE fillings are easily recognised on x-rays which supports a reliable diagnosis. Radiopacity has become an important and much-desired property to have in dental restoratives. By showing up white on dental x-rays, radiopacity can help in the diagnosis of fractures, voids, over contouring, missing proximal contact, marginal imperfections, secondary caries and more.
Venus Bulk Flow ONE’s high radiopacity of more than 250% AL allows for a safe and predictable diagnosis.

The importance of good hand hygiene for DCPs
Scientific evidence has proven hand hygiene to be the single most effective action to stop the spread of infection.
In fact, effective hand hygiene has been found to prevent up to 50% of avoidable infections§ acquired during health care delivery.
Viruses are easily passed through droplets and hand to surface or hand to person contact. By adhering to excellent hand hygiene procedures and using appropriate products, DCPs can make a significant impact on the reduction of healthcare-associated infections.
However, it is equally important to remember that if you are not using the right kind of hand products, good hand hygiene can damage the integrity of your skin.
This is especially true in the colder months when the weather can wreak havoc on hands already stripped of moisture by frequent washing and the application of alcohol gels. This can lead to dry, cracked and sore hands that can harbour bacteria and aggravate skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis.
Selecting hand wash products should therefore factor in not only efficacy, but how well the product will protect your hands
§According to WHO
Dentisan hand care products are designed specifically to clean, sanitise, and protect your skin. “
”by Jenny Nixon Business Development Director at Dentisan
The solution
One of the best ways to prevent the spread of infections and protect the hard-working hands of DCPs is by using effective hand care products, such as those in the Dentisan range. When considering product spec, look out for handwash specifically designed for healthcare environments. Make sure the product is HTM 01-05 compliant, perfume-free and solvent-free, such as DentiWash Hand Cleaner.
Hand cleaner should contain skin conditioners and emollient for added protection against dryness and chapping - ideally suited for repeated use throughout the working day. Both DentiWash and DentiGel, a post-wash disinfectant gel, contain such skin conditioners for added protection
DentiGel contains more than 70% alcohol, making it compliant with World Health Organisation guidance for efficacy against coronavirus. It has been microbiologically tested to comply to BS EN 1500 (European hand sanitiser standards). It can also be used on clean skin between washing.
If you prefer an alcohol-free post-wash disinfectant gel, DentiSure is also fully compliant with HTM 01-05 and has been microbiologically tested to British Standard BS EN 1500.
All products in the Dentisan hand care range are designed specifically to clean, sanitise, and protect your skin. Using compliant, high-quality hand hygiene products that meet approved British and European industry standards will help to keep hands clean and safe while offering the best possible protection from infection risk and work-related skin problems.
Knowing when to wash
Hand hygiene is recommended at the following key stages, according to HTM 01-05 guidelines.
• Before, between and after seeing patients
• Before and after removal of PPE
• Following manual cleaning of dental instruments
• Before contact with instruments that have been autoclaved
• After cleaning or maintaining decontamination devices used for dental instruments
• After completion of decontamination work
Did you know... Dentisan is taking decisive steps
by 2025 Dentisan’s products have undergone a transformation in packaging, including a reduction in direct packaging material coupled with the use of recyclable HDPE, along with postal packaging exclusively using recyclable card.
Just how good are
EdgeEndo files?
PERFORMANCE. PRICE
The development of nickel titanium (NiTi) files has been one of the biggest advancements in dentistry in recent decades.
Having overtaken traditional stainless-steel files, NiTi files are now easily the most widely used file for root canals thanks to the superior flexibility they provide. But not all NiTi file systems are the same.
How flexible are they?
PERFORMANCE.PRICE. TECHNOLOGY.
In similar fashion to the growth of NiTi files, EdgeEndo has swiftly caught up with established names to become one of the world’s most popular endodontic file brands in little over 10 years.
Universally
Flexibility is the great strength of NiTi files and the reason they surpassed stainless steel in popularity. Superelasticity and shape memory are the two properties that make NiTi files so flexible, but these characteristics can also be enhanced with heat treatment.
How has this happened? The key lies in EdgeEndo’s file strength and flexibility.
How strong are they?
As good as NiTi files are, they do come with an increased risk of failure (cyclic fatigue or torsional failure) compared to stainless steel. Cyclic fatigue occurs when the file is rotated continuously in a curved canal by compressive and tensile stresses. Torsional failure occurs when the tip of the file is locked but its shank continues to rotate. Both occurrences can cause the file to exceed its limits of elasticity, deform and eventually separate. The more curved the canal, the greater the chances of this happening.
Heat-treated NiTi files are extremely flexible with EdgeEndo files capable of achieving 90° canal curvature.
EdgeEndo files work interchangeably with the system and technique you already use to ensure a seamless transition.
” “
Heat treatment allows flexibility to be maintained in the canal with a lower risk of the alloy bouncing back into shape and putting pressure on the file. Like most NiTi files, EdgeEndo files can be pre-bent to accommodate different canal structures.
Are they compatible with my current system?
Switching to different endodontic files can be off-putting if it requires a completely different technique or the files are not compatible with your current handpieces. This is not the case with EdgeEndo.
To combat this and minimise the chances of failure, many NiTi files are now heat treated to modify and enhance the mechanical properties of the material. The unique heat-treated technology used in EdgeEndo files gives them twice the resistance to cyclic fatigue versus comparable heat-treated files on the market according to a cyclic fatigue test carried out by EdgeEndo.
The full results of the test can be viewed here.
All EdgeEndo files, obturators and points work interchangeably with the system and technique you already use to ensure a seamless transition.
For example, the EdgeOne Fire system works with the same handpieces operated at the WaveOne Gold parameter and the EdgeTaper Platinum system works with the same handpieces operated at the ProTaper Gold parameter. All EdgeEndo products use the universal ISO handle colour scheme to indicate the size of the file.

On the surface
by Laurence BohanHow surgery surfaces might not be as clean as you think and how to fix this
Routine cleaning and disinfection of surfaces plays a key role in the infection control of any dental practice.
Dental surfaces should be cleaned and disinfected between treating patients and at the beginning and end of each day.
This is done to help prevent bacteria and viruses being transferred to patients and staff.
How important is surface disinfection?
During treatment, all surfaces in a dental setting are at risk of becoming contaminated with bacterial and viral pathogens. This includes bacteria (such as TB), fungi, yeast and enveloped viruses such as Coronaviruses, HIV, HBV, HCV H1N1 and H5N1.
Transmission of these pathogens to patients or members of the dental team can happen either directly or indirectly (cross contamination).
Studies have shown that the area potentially becoming contaminated during treatment practically encompasses the whole room. And with many items temporarily or semipermanently stored on work surfaces, the importance of maintaining these areas is vital.
To combat this, disinfection procedures should be practical, cost effective and extend to all vulnerable surfaces.
Properties to look for
The two most important characteristics of an effective disinfectant are spectrum of activity and efficacy.
Spectrum of activity relates to how many different viruses and bacteria the product can kill or inactivate. Efficacy relates to how efficiently it kills and inactivates.
The best disinfectants will be clinically proven against a broad range of microorganisms, such as bacteria, non-enveloped viruses, fungi and yeast.
Your preferred disinfectant should ideally be compatible with a wide range of surface materials.
Other important considerations:
Contact time - The amount of time the disinfectant needs to remain in contact with the surface to kill or inactivate microorganisms.
Safety – is the product safe for frequent use, and can it be disposed of without harming the environment?
Alcohol or non-alcohol disinfectant?
Surface disinfectant is available in both an alcohol and alcohol-free formula. Both can be used for cleaning multiple surfaces in the dental practice and have a broad spectrum of virucidal, bactericidal and fungicidal activity. Both alcohol-free and alcohol wipes provide rapid speed of action, requiring only one-minute contact time in most cases. Alcohol-free disinfectant is often preferred for cleaning certain surfaces in the practice, such as chair covers and glass, as alcohol wipes can discolour or harm these materials over time.
HTM 01-05 recommendations
6.46 All work surfaces where clinical care or decontamination is carried out should be impervious and easily cleanable.
6.54 The dental practice should have a local protocol clearly outlining surface- and room-cleaning schedules.
6.57 The use of disinfectant or detergent will reduce contamination on surfaces.
Beware cheap disinfectants
After the Coronavirus pandemic, lots of cheaper surface disinfectants began appearing on the market, especially via the internet.
Many such products are unproven and can only claim limited efficacy against bacteria or simple viruses, rather than providing the broad spectrum microbicidal action required by dental practices. These products can also contain chemicals that can potentially damage surfaces and equipment, leading to unnecessary downtime and expense.

Dentistry’s relationship with mental health Mental Dental
The job of a dentist is without doubt one of society’s most important. But it can also be one of the most stressful and loneliest.
Treating multiple patients a day (many of whom don’t want to be there), looking after their oral health and managing their expectations isn’t easy. Throw into the mix time pressures and financial pressures and it’s not hard to see how the job of a dentist can be both physically and emotionally exhausting. Fatigue and burnout have been highlighted by the BDA on several occasions.
“It is clear from the existing pool of evidence that the psychosocial working conditions of both community dentists and GDPs place them at risk of occupational stress,” said the BDA in 2017.
“This occupational stress can have negative implications for dentists’ mental health, increasing their risk of emotional distress and anxiety.”
The situation was made a lot worse by the Coronavirus pandemic, which in many ways the industry is still recovering from. As well as being harmful to DCPs, stress and anxiety can also negatively impact patient outcomes.
“Previous evidence in other healthcare sectors shows that staff wellbeing is linked directly to patient experience of care,” says the GDC.
Silver linings
Mental health is a major issue in wider society. According to the mental health charity Mind, approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK experience a mental health problem each year.
Fortunately, there has been an increase in awareness around mental health and much work is being done to tackle the stigma associated with mental health problems and encourage people to seek help without fear of judgement or embarrassment. Events like Mental Health Awareness Week, which runs from 13 to 19 May, are helping to find and address the sources of mental health problems so that people and communities can thrive. There are now resources available specially for dentists and healthcare workers, some of which we have highlighted below. All of the links are clickable and will take you straight to the website you want.
• Support for Dental Team – A UK-wide resource for wellbeing support for the dental team.
• NHS Employers: Keep Having a Good Day – A tool to help you think about your emotional health.
• Confidential Helpline – Emotional first aid for dentists in distress.
Remember, asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
and why nobody should be afraid to open up
Food for thought
Why not consider some of the following ideas to boost mental wellbeing.
• Go on a course - It might be helpful to undertake a course in mental health and wellbeing to enable you to better notice signs of distress in your team.
• Mindfulness - Practising mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing exercises or meditation, can aid in preventing burnout, increase job satisfaction and boost mental resilience.
• Talking - Opening up about mental health struggles, seeking support and fostering open conversations can help eradicate stigma and create a supportive environment where mental health is no longer a silent struggle.
• Sense of purpose - Dentists provide an invaluable service to society and its important to remind yourselves of this. Why not share things that have gone well, for example patient compliments or successful treatment results on a gratitude board or in a team meeting.
• Go green – Recent research has found that people associate sustainable actions with positive emotions, such as happiness and fulfilment. Why not review what ways you could make your practice eco-friendlier.
• Be authentic - Bringing your authentic self to work is a great way to prevent burnout. To show off your personality, why not get your practice on Instagram or TikTok to have some fun and relieve some stress.

Karen Painter Spotlight on...
To give you a greater insight into our team we are shining a light on some of our wonderful account managers and marketers. Up this month is account manager, Karen Painter.
Think of history’s great comebacks. Michael Jordan returning after 2 years away from basketball to win 3 NBA titles, Muhammad Ali winning multiple heavyweight titles after a 3-year ban, George Foreman winning the world title after 10 years away from boxing (and releasing an excellent toastie maker to boot!) All great stories, but they’ve got nothing on our very own champion, Karen.
Karen first worked for Kent Express between 1991 and 1998, before taking 18 years out to bring up her children. After returning to the fold in 2016, she soon picked up where she left off becoming an integral part of our sales team as a consultant. Speaking to and helping customers is what Karen thrives in and loves most.
Away from work she enjoys spending time in the garden and catching up with friends. To unwind, there’s no beating a cheeky glass of wine, Pot Noddle and watching Married At First Sight!
Why your uniform matters!
Whatever your role in the dental team, what you wear can have a big impact on not only how you feel physically, but mentally too.
This is because uniform can promote a sense of pride, belonging and self-assurance. It negates the concerns over what to wear and whether your choice of attire will be ‘acceptable’ and meet with the approval of others.
Figuring out what to wear each day can bring on anxiety, increased stress levels and even create competition among the team. Having a nice uniform can eliminate that pressure of finding something different to wear each day.
The Kent Express uniform range includes several different options that can boost the overall wellbeing of your team, including extremely comfortable scrubs that I can vouch for having tried them on myself!
