Great January deals from W&H

This month is the perfect time to launch our new digital-only brochure, The Express Way, as we celebrate Energy Saving Week. Running from 17-23 January, Energy Saving Week is a national campaign to help and encourage people to save energy while cutting down on fuel costs at the same time. With procurement (19%) currently the third biggest contributor to the dental carbon footprint, The Express Way is purposely available exclusively online to reduce manufacturing and delivery emissions, and help our industry become more sustainable. Accounting for an even bigger percentage of all dental greenhouse gas emissions (14-21%) is energy. Reducing energy consumption can offer significant environmental, health and cost benefits for your business. In this brochure you’ll find product recommendations, offers and advice to help your practice become more eco-friendly and prove it can be easy being green!

Lower your energy bills with en With prices still well above pre-energy crisis levels and the forecasts for 2024 looking uncertain, now is a good time to begin paying greater attention to your energy use. Here is a look at some equipment-based ideas to reduce your practice’s energy consumption and help contribute to the industry’s larger sustainability goals.

What’s the problem? Although 2023 saw some stabilisation following the unprecedented rises in energy prices of the previous year, prices are now still double what they were at the start of 2021. In addition to the energy crisis, the dangers of climate change and the NHS’ ambitious aims to reduce emissions by 80% over the next 6-10 years means there is now a real responsibility for every practice to improve its green credentials. Energy currently accounts for roughly 14 to 21% of the dental industry’s greenhouse emissions, second only to travel on the dental carbon footprint.

What’s the solution? Switching to energy-efficient equipment can be a great way begin instantly saving a small amount of money which can add up to substantial savings over the course of a year or two. Here are a couple of our top recommendations:

Curing Lights LED curing lights are a prime example of how the energy use of dental equipment can be reduced with a shift in technology. Though LED lights now consume very little energy, their sheer frequency of use means that they can quickly breakdown if not maintained properly. This can lead to the regular need for charging or replacing of lightbulbs. Our recommendation: Kerr Demi Plus LED Curing Light. The Demi Plus LED Curing Light from Kerr uses periodic level shifting technology (PLS) that can deliver a 5-second cure for shades A3 and lighter without generating excess heat. Outstanding battery life can provide 300 x 10 second cures from a single charge.

nergy efficient dental equipment Autoclaves Autoclaves are notoriously one of the most energy intensive pieces of equipment in the practice but also one of the most invaluable for infection control. It is therefore important to purchase the appropriate autoclave for the purpose intended; too small a unit will result in additional machine cycles and too big a unit will result in low-capacity machine utilisation. Our recommendation: W&H Lisa Autoclave. The Lisa Vacuum Steriliser from W&H uses Eco Dry+ technology to adapt the drying time to the mass of the load. This reduces the cycle time, increases the life span of your instruments and optimises the energy consumption.

n w o D o Margate t

Roundup of our recent beach clean on the Kent coast

Equipped with litter pickers, rubbish bags and gloves, we recently ventured down to the English seaside town of Margate to clean up the local beach. Taking a hands-on approach to tackling the environmental crisis, our small band of marketers and account managers spent several hours clearing the sand of food wrappers, cigarette butts, bottle caps and even a tiny bowtie that likely belonged to a now slightly less stylish pup! Once we had cleared the shoreline of debris and plastic, our high vis vests were put away, rubbish sacks were safely disposed, and a well-deserved spot of lunch was enjoyed! The whole team left the beach with both a sense of pride and satisfaction, but with the realisation that plastic pollution and climate change are serious issues that need urgent, joint-up action.

How big a problem is plastic pollution?

How can the dental industry help?

According to the Ocean Conservancy, every year 11 million metric tons of plastics enter the ocean on top of the estimated 200 million metric tons that currently circulate marine environments.

Adopting a ‘Reduce-Reuse-Recycle’ policy in the surgery, reception, waiting room and staff areas can go a long way to minimising waste and divert from landfill and incineration, saving money and reducing emissions.

Not only can marine debris injure or kill marine and coastal wildlife, but it also can cause economic losses and the loss of biodiversity and of ecosystem functions and services as indicated by the United Nations Environment Programme.

Some simple waste management ideas to make your practice more sustainable include:

In the UK, the Marine Conservation Society’s Great British Beach Clean found an average of 425 items of litter per 100 metres of beach surveyed in 2020, with plastic pieces being the most common. Another study found 14,000 tons of microplastics (tiny plastic particles smaller than 5mm) accumulate on British beaches each year. These can be a danger to dogs as they sniff and explore in the sand.

Now up to half price, it’s th Why switching

from amalgam to composite doesn’t need to be expensive.

by Laurence Bohan

Why are amalgam fillings controversial? The controversy around amalgam fillings relates to the mercury content present in the material and whether it is safe for patients and the wider environment. According to the NHS, there is no evidence that amalgam fillings are anything to worry about because the low level of mercury absorbed from them is not enough to create any toxic effects. However mercury is not biodegradable and over the course of a year can reside in the air and be transported around the globe.

Higher levels of mercury can adversely alter the neurological and reproductive systems of humans and wildlife, and has long been known to contaminate fresh-water lakes, fish and fish-eating birds.

Amalgam restrictions are currently in place across NHS and private dental practices courtesy of the Our own brand Control of Mercury (Enforcement) Regulations, restoratives which came into force in 2018.

represent a budget friendly way to provide patients with more naturallooking fillings.

It is estimated that two-thirds of dental mercury is eventually released into the environment.

What’s the alternative?

We have seen a major decline in amalgam use in recent years, with dentists switching to composite and GI materials to provide for patients who are increasingly wanting the ‘invisible’ look of modern composite fillings compared to amalgam.

Two of our best priced composites include DEHP Nano Flowable Composite and Cyber Fill NaNo2.

Why not try... DEHP Nanohybrid Composite Highly filled, resin-based nanohybrid composite. Average filler particle size: 0.6 microns. Condensable, radiopaque and easily formed.

Spotlight on... Jack Marchant To give you a greater insight into our team we are shining a light on some of our wonderful account managers and marketers. Up this month is account manager, Jack Marchant.

14

Account Manager Jack has been with the company for 17 years in various roles, including four years working in our Gillingham warehouse. Now our resident dental handpiece specialist, Jack’s favourite part of his job is being able to work within such a good team. Jack enjoys spending his free time with his wife and kids, and socialising with friends and family. His hobbies include playing and watching football, particularly Chelsea, and his guilty pleasures are old-school boy bands like Westlife and Blue.

So, whether you’re in need of a new high-speed turbine or just a cheesy rendition of Flying Without Wings, Jack’s your man!

Any thoughts of energy saving equipment? “The right maintenance secures the best possible performance and the longevity of your handpieces, which in itself is more sustainable,” says Jack. “Devices such as W&H Assistina TWIN provide the maximum lubrication service for your dental instruments at optimal oil consumption. With its innovative duo-chamber system, it lubricates in record time.

The TWIN Care Set only needs to be changed after around 2,800 instruments, which is an equivalent of 20 oil spray cans (400ml per oil spray can), so waste is avoided, too. This means that maintenance isn’t just quick and reliable, it’s also more eco-friendly and cost-effective.” You can contact Jack on 01634 878759.
