about Doujunkai apartment The Doujunkai apartments were the first apartment buildings constructed with reinforced concrete in Japan in the Showa and Taisho era. They were built in Tokyo and Yokohama for the purposes of and as a model for reconstruction after the Great Kanto Earthquake. They were selected as one of the docomomo150 choice, a selection of architecturally important modern buildings. They have been being sequentially replaced as they have grown old however there is a large conservation effort trying to preserve them.

01 introduction What I felt abo ut re b ui l d i ng of D ouj unk a i A oy a m a a p a r t m e nt The Doujunkai Aoyama apartment was built in Harajuku, Omotesando. The buildings were very old and contained some stores. However, signs of the life of the inhabitants such as a flowerpot and the laundry could be felt and was well suited to the atmosphere of Omotesando. It left a strong impression on me as a primary schoolchild back in those days. When I was a 6th grade elementary school student, The Aoyama apartment was rebuilt and made into to Omotesando Hills. Though the building was replaced with a new one and I thought it was cool, the place felt completely different than before. When an old building is replaced with a new one, not only does the building in and of itself change, but also the neighboring atmosphere may change at the same time.

Invisible t hr ead o f t he i m a gi na t i on

The city is connected by the invisible thread of the history

A certain architecture historians said the following, “A city is connected by the thread of invisible imagination. When someone has seen a historic architectural work, the person thinks about the past world that he does not know. This is a very creative act. Therefore, when a city loses historic architecture, maybe it becomes a more inhuman world. When I read this statement, I understood the meanings of the slight loneliness, that I felt when the Aoyama apartment was replaced. Probably I would imagine the world of the early Showa period before I was born while staring at the Aoyama apartment. The replacement of the last Doujunkai apartments, the Uenoshita apartments, with a highrise apartment building has been announced. The building is extremely rundown so it cannot be used as is. However,I thought that by inheriting the properties of the Doujunkai apartments, I can design a new architecture that preserves the thread of the imagination.

It was a part of the area which avoided destruction in the bombings of world war 2 as such, there were many houses in the town from old times, and the area has an enduring atmosphere of historic Tokyo. Most of houses in the neighborhood have changedform into office buildings due to the demands of their close proximity to Ueno Station. Therefore, the local cityscape has changed, and regionality has been lost. fig. the town which changes

In phase2 I distributed it between four categories conservation, constitution, spatiality, program. In phase3 I decided to create a modern frame for the building that will conserve the characteristic of the previous space while allowing the apartment to adapt with changes in time, characteristics and site conditions.

Doujunkai apartment has the publicity open to the town and the past that was made as a local disaster base. So I suggest the reproduction as not an apartment, but an apartment compounding with community facilities. Scenery of the life of the person is transmitted through this building by compounding two functions. This building is community facilities which closely reflect the daily lives of the neighbors.

F ive r o les of t hi s a r c hi t e c t ur e This architecture has five roles. The community functions such as a library or the studio and residence function as the apartment. In addition, disaster base using the plaza and the well and infrastructure base using cogeneration system. And this building has town cafe which sends local information to the outside along.

lines of circulation for neighbors The lines of circulation which neighbors coming to use the community facilties use unites the space with local activity such as a reading room and studio.

Establishing public and private space by use of a double spiral structure.

I change the spatial structure to that of a double spiral structure, while conserving the height of the building , the volume and the stair hall model that is the existing constitution of the Doujunkai apartment. While keeping the privacy of the resident, the connection between residents within the building is made when residents use the community facilties.

-The succession of the spatial property of the Doujunkai apartment-

The characteristic of Doujunkai apartment are small scale, the intimate connections brought about by a stair hall and a comfortable lived-in feel that overflows into commonal areas. In particular the community of Doujunkai apartment was born in these small stair halls. I adjusted the scale and constitution of the dwelling unit so that such an atmosphere is felt even if a skeleton and the constitution changed. In the small scale of the slope, scenery of life overflow through a dwelling unit terrace gives local activits color and creates a new community. small scale of Doujunkai apartment

The vertical grille are set up around the slopeway, giving the space a small scale like the Doujunkai apartments while the inside and the outside are gently connected. The Interval of the vertical grille changes from a gradation at 600mm from 200mm to suit the function in the structure. By this change of interval, the opposing properties of brightness and darkness, open space and closed space are continuously varying.

The relations that visible and invisible By changing the distance of the vertical grille gradually, a visible and invisible relationship is created between different internal spaces and the plaza. It ensures the privacy of quiet functions.

In contrast, the environment changes in various scales of time such as the season , days , hours. Sky, light and rain, color of the sky and brightness.I thought that the visitor can strongly feel and understand this place by making an architecture which is strongly influenced by its varying environment.

During the Inuyama festival and summer festival and New Year holidays, the water level reaches its peak, and the bustle of the city is born. At time with little water, the moat is used as a water park and becomes the citizen's oasis.

Inuyama becomes the town you can feel a festival by four models

The water level changes with the event of the town The preparations begin with increase in water.

We change water level to the event of the town.

From the window of the train,I can see the increase in quantity of water of the outside moat.

The town distribution of Inuyama conclude in a side among moats. This is because it is affected that it was maintained as a castle town.Furthermore, water is drawn along the town distribution. The property of the historic town is strengthened by visualizing The town distribution. In the town, the conversations of the festival begin to increase with a change of the quantity of water, and people of the town start the preparation for a festival.

We designed about four building models connected with a played moat and the waterway pulled in the downtown. In accordance with quantity of water changing, a function and space change. On the stage called Inuyama, four models give color to cityscape with the water level change of the moat. The color influences a person moving by train and car and expands more.

Tokyo’ s new ward

We think about the future of Tokyo. This suggestion is the plan that repair and use by the method that is different from removal of the viaduct. We suggest the new dministrative district that leads Tokyo to the sustainable future.

DATE PLACE

The infrastructure of engineering works supporting overwhelming traffic change a city image of current Tokyo by using a network of the Tokyo expressway.

01 Future of Tokyo Food and population problem in Tokyo Food self-sufficiency ratio of Tokyo is only 1%. This mesns not only we can find food only by paying money in Tokyo, but also if great disaster attacks Tokyo and the circulation was cut off , we cannot find food autonomously. So we live in the weak system .

Tokyo new ward

The highway junction in the downtown area of Tokyo's existing 23 wards is the nucleus of Tokyo new ward with functions such as a market and an educational facility, the government office gathered here. It funtcions as the center of a rational system of production, circulation and consumption by gathering some main function at the nucleus and linking this structure to the rest of Tokyo's 23 wards.

About Tokyo new ward

We plan a new district of Tokyo, on the new land where will be born when the Tokyo expressway is moved underground. The new ward of Tokyo is a model from the farm village which is in existence in contradiction to the city, and autonomous life is run by this.

By the characteristic of new wards as the network where a relationship of spreads through, the sustained life spreads to neighboring thing such as industry and life, environment little by little. And the city image of a others-dependent model of Tokyo will change.

Tokyo expressway will be sent underground

From the place for cars to the place for people Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport which examined reproduction of the Tokyo expressway submitted a expert panel report which showed Tokyo expressway’s eleveated roadway will be moved underground. Around 1 million cars a day may not run on the viaduct. However, we thought that we might use this elevated structure which will became unnecessary as a place of the life. We define Tokyo expressway elevated roadway as new land in Tokyo.

"TETSUSON" is a graduation design exhibition for students for art design, architecture design and is managed by a student. It started in 2001 and we took in charge of an entrance design and internal display in 2010 "TETSUSON" which reached the tenth anniversary.

The building is a headquarters of BankART1929. It was repaired from a warehouse used as Nippon Yusen history museum and a lot of display and the performance of various fields are carried out. We suggested the installation in the area of the backside facing the sea from the entrance of the site of the BankARTstudio NYK.

visualization of 3,652 days

From white to red

We cannot realize the length of the time called ten years easily . At this suggestion the heaviness of ten years is converted into 3,652 days, and the time is visualized by the medium called 3,652 "balloons" comprised in a ball and a line. The aggregate of the balloon which crowds and wriggles, and wavers leads people to the meeting place and creates new places in BankART studio NYK. Length, the heaviness of ten years. We hope many people to experience them while comparing with own memory.

We thought "3652" changes the aspect every day as if the time called ten years change people. Therefore, I arrange a red balloon as a signature to tell the end of a day. This is a project that the balloon gradually changes and to continue until BankArtStudio become crimson.

But in the university festival period, the existence of the forest is forgotten. Only this forest’s atmosphere doesn’t change while an atmosphere of other places in the school changes completely .The purpose of forest installation is to solve the above facts from a viewpoint of architect and sending possibility of the space based on our works. "Living Room" may not necessarily be a room put a sofa and TV. For the family of the musicomania, Living Room” is performance ground laid with musical instruments . In addition, depend on a family, even a garden and the athletic ground may become the “Living Room”. We regarded the space that is changed variously by the environment that surrounded there as Living Room.

When you enter at the front gate of Chiba University, you will see the park that have full of green . A student ,a teacher and even local people spend each time freely in this forest. There is a very big zelkova in the forest and the scene that many people gather and spend under the tree of the zelkovais is a signature that means the campus of Chiba University has many greens.

Seasonal expression In the summer a green leaf growing thickly shut out the summer severe solar light and send comfortable sunbeams shining through branches of trees to us. In the autumn, a leaf becomes the bright yellow and sunbeams shining through branches of trees of a color tinged with yellow pours into the forest. The scene lets you feel emotion taste. In winter when dead leaves finishes falling, and a forest becomes the carpet of dead leaves, the zelkova becomes the branch and can tell the cold winter arrival. And, in spring, a sprout sprouts and gives Chiba University new life with a new pupil. The forest gives healing and feel the richness of nature life to student and coming people.

This space was stripped completely and had become like a desolated ruin. Next, the wooden elements and furniture were buried in white pebbles. This makes the space change instantly as if snow falls in a city landscape. Gaps in time and material flow link up naturally. The pebbles might be difficult to walk on at first, but maybe you will get used to them during your stay. It is like camping out in nature; you adapt yourself to the environment. The space does not adapt itself to you, but you adapt to it. The space awakes a latent natural instinct that everybody appears to carry within but is normally not activated.

introduction Participation in exhibition ‘’ LLOVE” LLOVE is a design exhibition of the stay type carried out in Tokyo, Daikanyama from October 22, to November 23 in 2009, and Japan and a Netherlands creator designed the guest room of the hotel as a memory about establishment of diplomatic relations 400 years in 2009. I participated in production as the temporary staff of the Yuko Nagayama & associates. I worked for not only the construction but also the study for the details. During the production period for approximately one month, it was the really stimulating experience that I was able to work with various professional design, construction, public information.

01 introduction Design by three concepts We designed a chair because we were requested from the sightseeing company of Kanaya, Futtsu-shi, Chiba whom we became acquainted with in fieldwork . The chair will be used when the president eat with the Governor of Chiba prefecture . Because the president demanded a simple design and we hada limited budget, limitation of the construction and structure occured .So we thought about three design concepts and performed the study with the model . Therefore we proposed FrameChair that is given strength by cut China veneer in a laser cutter and laminating it.
