KENT PLACE ANNOUNCES $30 MILLION CAMPAIGN FOR CONSTRUCTION OF NEW FACILITIES AND SECURES MORE THAN $17 MILLION IN THE “QUIET PHASE”

Thursday, June 9, 2016, was a picture-perfect day at Kent Place School. The sun was shining, there was a buzz of excitement as students enjoyed their last day of classes, and history was about to be made as our community came together for the groundbreaking of the 32,508-square-foot Center for Innovation. “We’re beginning the summer with the old Middle School, math, art and tech wings,” Head of School Sue Bosland told the crowd, “but we’ll start the school year in the fall looking at a brand new Center for Innovation emerging from the ground in that same space.” President of the Kent Place Board of Trustees Jay McGraw IV, Campaign Chair Maria Chrin and Mayor of Summit Nora Radist also addressed the hundreds of students, parents and donors to help commemorate this milestone event.

$17 MILLION

This moment marks the official launch of the public phase of the $30 million campaign, the largest fundraising effort in Kent Place history. The capital raised will build the new Center for Innovation, followed by the construction of a state-of-the-art Athletic Center and the renovation of the Performing Arts Center. The Board of Trustees is delighted to announce that more than $17 million in gifts and pledges has been secured in the “quiet phase” of this campaign, thanks to the generosity of 341 donors. Included in this amount are four gifts of $1 million or more, two of which are from alumnae and the other two from past parents. To be known as “Limitless Possibilities,” the campaign for Kent Place School will provide endless opportunities in these facilities for all of our talented students today and for generations of young women to come. Fundraising efforts will continue this fall, and will offer every member of the KPS community a way to leave a legacy of excellence and innovation in education.

A PEEK INSIDE . . . Following a thorough review of the school’s most compelling needs, the Board of Trustees approved the plans for this campaign, which begins with the construction of the Center for Innovation. A great deal of research, thought, discussion and input from all stakeholders, including students, went into the development of these plans. For the past several years, a team of KPS administrators and trustees met regularly with the architectural firm KSQ Design to brainstorm, innovate, review and optimize the 32,508-square-foot learning center, which will focus on the study of STEAM subjects: science, technology, engineering, visual arts and mathematics. “The entire building is designed for how girls learn best — by doing,” said Julie Gentile, Director of Studies. “In order for them to become prepared, self-directed problem solvers, we know that girls need spaces where they’re free to imagine, explore, design, create, collaborate, build and apply their understanding.”

These spaces will be flexible, innovative and transformative in their design to inspire learning and spark the imagination and curiosity of the scholars at Kent Place. And because we know that academic needs will always evolve, these spaces have been designed to be physically flexible to accommodate future demands in the educational landscape.

I’m writing with the great excitement we all felt during the recent groundbreaking and the public announcement of this $30 million campaign to build the Center for Innovation and enhance our Athletic and Performing Arts Centers. The Limitless Possibilities campaign reflects the strategic vision of the KPS Board of Trustees and its focus on academic excellence, the cornerstone of a Kent Place education. The board has demonstrated tremendous leadership in propelling this campaign forward. In the “quiet phase” of the campaign, more than 340 members of the community stepped up with generous gifts and pledges. As a result, we’re well on our way to reaching the goal: more than $17 million has been raised to date. We’re so fortunate to be part of an engaged community, one with a dedicated and outstanding leadership team. Thanks to the foresight and generosity of parents and of alumnae who have come before us, our students are benefiting from this great school. Over the past 10 years, my husband and I have witnessed how Kent Place has nourished, in both of our daughters, the confidence and passion for learning and the drive to constantly challenge themselves. The new construction and renovation projects will take the school and its current and future students to even greater heights. These state-of-the-art facilities and corresponding programs will provide limitless possibilities to experience ‘brave and brilliant’ in exciting new ways. What an honor it is that we, the current Kent Place community, have the distinction of being able to continue and pass on that legacy! Of course, we still have a way to go to achieve — or even exceed — our fundraising goal. We’ll be sending more information in the coming months. In addition, the Campaign Steering Committee and the Development team will continue to meet with families on an individual basis to discuss gift opportunities. I want to express our gratitude and appreciation to all who have supported this campaign already. Without you, we wouldn’t have been able to break ground! To those who have yet to participate, thank you for considering how you can support KPS. It’s through our collective involvement that we’ll make the Limitless Possibilities campaign a resounding success, and leave an indelible imprint on this wonderful school.

“STEAM”-Focused Teaching and Learning SCIENCE. As a complement to the university-level science labs housed in the Upper and Middle Schools, the Center for Innovation will have an a STEM lab and a large innovation lab in which our girls can take an idea from its inception through every step of the design, development and production process.

TECHNOLOGY. Technology will be seamlessly integrated into the infrastructure of the center’s teaching and learning spaces. The tech center will provide hardware and software support, a place to study and work on projects and a “Genius Bar” setup where our students can work individually or get tech help. In addition, the media studio will enable our students to produce and edit video, film and photography projects.

ENGINEERING. The hub of the Center for Innovation will be the innovation lab, a place where the girls and young women will have an appropriate space to explore engineering, robotics, architecture and design. VISUAL ARTS. In addition to three beautiful visual arts studios, a visual arts office and storage space, the Center for Innovation will house an art gallery that has the flexibility to display large installations as well as smaller-scale student artwork.

MATHEMATICS. The mathematics center will emphasize all facets of the subject and its connections to other disciplines and provide state-of-the-art work areas for research, exploration and linking the study of math with science and technology. Equally important, the new library and information center will provide access to top research sources and increase the areas for interactive group and quiet independent work.

A QUICK REMINDER FOR ALL KENT PLACE CONSTITUENTS Funds raised during a capital campaign are separate and distinct from the funds secured for an annual fund. Funds for a capital campaign may be pledged immediately but paid over a term of up to five years, whereas dollars raised for an annual fund must be paid within the fiscal year and are used to support the people and the programs within the school year. During our very exciting capital campaign, Limitless Possibilities, we ask that you give to the Annual Fund just as you have in the past. These are two very different funds that are equally important but have different functions within an independent school. A gift to the Annual Fund has an impact on the school in the short term by supporting the day-to-day people and programs that set Kent Place apart. A gift to the Annual Fund has meaning to every student on our campus. A gift to the capital campaign, which may be paid over one to five years, will help with construction of our new facilities and ensure that Kent Place remains a leader in the independent school world.
