Message from the Chair of the Board Dear Kent Place Community, As I look back at the 2022–23 academic year, I’m moved by the generosity and foresight of our community. Every year, we enjoy the philanthropic support of every constituency we touch — from alumnae and their families to parents, faculty, staff, trustees, and friends — and this one is no different. Parent participation is at a five-year high, a ringing endorsement of both our mission and the quality of the KPS educational experience. Alumnae support is strong, as demonstrated by the outstanding response to Founders Day, enthusiastic turnout for alumnae events across the country, and the host of alumnae returning to campus to share their experiences and expertise with students. The larger KPS family is committed, as shown by the increase in giving from our grandparent donors and other friends of the school. Clearly, the importance of our mission is recognized even by those who don’t have the privilege of being on campus daily. Our donors believe in long-term investment; both our Heritage Society and Oak Leaf Society, which recognize those who have included Kent Place in their estate plan and loyal donors who have made a gift for five or more years respectively, continue to grow, which strengthens our financial foundation. The dedication of our many volunteers is unfaltering. Their willingness to dedicate time and resources to the betterment of the school is incredibly gratifying. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, please accept my deepest thanks. Your belief in the value of this institution and your generosity make our efforts to educate the next generation of confident, intellectual, and ethical leaders a reality and demonstrate to all that an investment in Kent Place is an investment in the future. Sincerely,
Anne Grissinger P ’25 Chair, Board of Trustees

Message from the Head of School Dear Kent Place Community, Our theme last year was Joy in Community, and it was indeed a year of joy as we came together to nurture young women to develop their intellect, their sense of wellness, and their ethical minds. This important work can be accomplished only with the dedication and commitment of donors like you, who show up for KPS in so many important ways. The Kent Place Fund offers every community member the opportunity to support our students today and to be part of our bright future, just as thousands of generous donors in our history have made the school what it is today. We are full of thanks for all the alumnae, parents, grandparents, friends, faculty, and staff who have responded to that opportunity with great enthusiasm and made 2022–2023 another record year of giving. Continued belief in and endorsement of our mission was also evident throughout the year, from another incredibly successful Founders Day, to reunion giving, to growth in our Oak Leaf and Heritage Societies. It was also extremely meaningful to see the establishment of new endowed funds honoring beloved faculty and alumnae to support the next generation of KPS students and teachers. As one parent observed eloquently on Founders Day: “Kent Place is a place for girls to make their mark, excel, and advance. We are blessed to have a place where girls can illuminate the world around them.” I agree wholeheartedly, and I’m sure you do too. In the pages of this report, you’ll see that so much has been accomplished this year because of your philanthropy. Thank you for all you make possible for our brave and brilliant girls. With deepest gratitude,
Jennifer C. Galambos Head of School

What Is Leadership at Kent Place School?
THE ANSWERS ARE
ENDLESS Kent Place School is unified around a singular mission:
to empower girls to be confident, intellectual, and ethical leaders who advance the world. But leadership takes many forms, and its manifestations are as multifaceted as are the many gifted young women who attend the school.
AN INDIVIDUAL JOURNEY “Leadership looks so different for different students,” says Head of School Jennifer Galambos. “A leader can inhabit a traditional role — for example, as a team captain or head of student government — but a leader can also
“There’s no one way to be a leader — it’s an individual journey,” agrees Holly Doyle P ’33, director of Girls’ Leadership Institute (GLI) and Leadership and teacher of Latin and the Leadership 6 Seminar in the Middle School. “Becoming a leader is about learning . . . to make

world, and comprehend that this impact might not always be obvious.”

For Board of Trustees Vice President Suneet Varma P ’29, leadership is multidimensional and must be developed with an eye on its many aspects. “There is thought leadership, which encompasses the qualities of good thinkers and problem-solvers, and visible leadership, which speaks to how one stands in front of people and inspires them to action with charisma and an inclusive attitude,” he says. “I’m proud to say that Kent Place offers students the education and experience to develop as both thought leaders and visible leaders, young women who possess the skills to go fast and far. In my experience, to be a good leader you also have to be a good person. And at Kent Place, we’re teaching our students to be good people, too.”
A SHARED OBJECTIVE Nurturing ethical leaders is an intrinsic part of the fabric of Kent Place School, says Dr. Galambos. It takes place in the classroom, on the playing field, and in the community, and it happens day after day.
“They say it’s difficult to lead when you haven’t seen others like yourself in positions of authority. Fortunately, in my formative years, I saw women in leadership roles all around Kent Place, an experience that impacted me and my understanding of what was possible. As students, we were given lots of opportunities to lead. I learned that while it’s important to have a seat at the table, you must also earn that spot by putting in the time and work necessary to participate in any discussion in a thoughtful way.” A. J. (Poor) Murphy ’94 COO, Blackstone Private Equity

Holly Doyle P ’33, one of the driving forces behind the Girls’ Leadership Institute at Kent Place, guides young minds to cultivate their full leadership potential. A dedicated faculty member, Mrs. Doyle oversees a spectrum of initiatives, fostering leadership skills that extend beyond the classroom.
“We know that lack of confidence can hold back girls and women, personally and professionally, and leadership is a way to build confidence,” she says. “To that end, we actively seek to embed leadership opportunities in every student experience.” Students learn to speak boldly, complete tasks, stretch themselves, and build teams. And over the years, their belief in themselves grows. “We want every KPS girl to develop a strong sense of confidence and her ability to lead, and thereby make her mark on the world in whatever way she chooses,” says the Head of School. And it’s working. “We interview departing seniors and ask, ‘Do you feel that you’ve had a leadership trajectory at Kent Place?’” says Dr. Galambos, “and to a person, the answer is always yes.”

“When I entered KPS, in the eighth grade, I was shy and felt uncomfortable stepping forward. But since then, I’ve gained confidence and learned to trust in myself. At KPS, we learn to talk to one another, guide one another, and speak our minds. Now I understand that anybody can be a leader. For me, it’s about cultivating good listening skills, persistence, and empathy. I’ve discovered that to be an effective leader, you must understand that people are coming from different places and then meet them where they are.” Maddie Popolow ’24 Bioethics scholar, Morning Meeting announcer, History Club president, Science Club president, Varsity Field Hockey captain, Ethics Bowl captain, Math Club president
A MULTIPRONGED APPROACH Kent Place faculty members cultivate leadership in a host of inventive ways. In the Upper School math classes of Ralph Pantozzi P ’20 ’24, for example, leadership is encouraged through investigation.
Upper School math teacher Ralph Pantozzi P ’20 ’24 seamlessly integrates leadership within the classroom. With a passion for problem-solving, he encourages students to ask questions and pursue varied lines of inquiry in their quest to sharpen their critical-thinking skills.
“As a subject, math is often seen as an already completed job and

Dr. Pantozzi plans activities that get students out of their comfort
In June, Dr. Pantozzi took these investigations farther afield, taking a

based on their response to the book. Then over the course of the year, they research literary criticism of the book, generate questions, and bring their own outside interest — such as fine art, music, or science — to bear on the novel. “The CHP cultivates critical leadership skills in a host of ways,” says Ms. Dwyer. “Students learn when to listen, when to learn, and when to speak. They develop an informed opinion and then defend it, and in so doing build a greater understanding of themselves.” Ms. Dwyer also guides students stepping into their capabilities as leaders through participation in Global Learning trips. “We start taking students abroad as sixth-graders,” she says, “which gets them into their stretch zone. Asking children as young as 12 to travel without their families encourages courage and independence and teaches collaboration. Students quickly gain an understanding of how their individual actions affect the entire group — for example, if you oversleep and the group misses its bus, everyone feels the impact. They begin to learn sublimation of the ego: this isn’t about me, it’s about the needs of the group.” Leading on and off the greens: Taylor Sieg ’24 (left), skilled golfer and captain of the team, offers insights and inspiration to her teammates. Taylor embodies leadership, camaraderie, and a passion for the sport.
“I’ve been a KPS student since Preschool and over the years I’ve learned that no idea or comment is stupid. The atmosphere here is supportive and lifts everyone. Through my classes and extracurriculars, I’ve discovered that to be a good leader, you must be an active listener. You must try to understand the people around you.” Miranda Wang ’24, at the Club Fair, promotes literary magazine Windward, for which she is senior writing editor. As Community Service president and a member of the Ethics Bowl team, Miranda leads in activities that capture her passions.

Ms. Dwyer believes that the most important result from overseas travel, however, is the effect it has on children once they return home. “Students discover the value of looking at their own culture through a new gaze, which enables them to assess their own beliefs and traditions more thoughtfully,” she says. “They begin to understand that sometimes leadership is more about active listening than about speaking. It’s an important growth experience.” For GLI Director Holly Doyle, giving students myriad opportunities to practice leadership is second nature. “At Kent Place,” she says, “we view leadership learning as an action. Leadership qualities are not something you simply have or don’t have; rather, they’re a way of being and living.” KPS is committed to offering students at all levels the chance to practice leadership, she says. In Primary School, teachers focus on the idea of leading self, encouraging students’ beliefs in their own abilities so that as they gain skills and begin to think more abstractly about leadership, they’ll have a willingness and a hunger to step forward and embrace challenges.
“I used to see leaders as a single type of individual — outspoken, assertive — but my time at KPS has taught me that all different sorts of people can lead. Real leadership is about embracing and leveraging your own strengths to motivate others. It’s about activating the potential in those around you. It’s about being a good listener as well as a good communicator. An ethical leader doesn't just focus on the end goal, but also seeks to inspire the potential in others during every day of the process.” Miranda Wang ’24 Community Service president, Windward senior writing editor, Ethics Bowl team member

Eleventh-grade students visit Rutgers University to conduct research for their Cumulative Humanities Project (CHP), a yearlong, interdisciplinary collaboration that incorporates research, analysis, and oral presentation into the study of history and literature.
In Middle School, teachers shift their emphasis to a more abstract exploration of leadership by familiarizing students with the qualities of leaders, developing their teamwork and conflict-negotiation skills, and encouraging their participation in leadership groups. In Upper School, faculty encourage students to look at leadership in terms of the relationship of self to others and the larger community. “In Upper School, students focus more on inspiring and motivating others, mentoring and modeling, and the legacy they’ll leave,” Mrs. Doyle says. “At Kent Place, students learn that there’s space for their voices,” she says. “They’re recognized and celebrated for their individuality and encouraged to speak out. It makes for a richer community.”

As Kent Place thinks about leadership, says Dr. Galambos, administrators and faculty are mindful of the four quadrants that guide the school’s efforts in leadership development: cultural responsiveness — that is, the ability to work with those with differing viewpoints; physical activity and well-being; an awareness of what one needs to thrive physically, spiritually, and emotionally; and the intellectual capacity to be a changemaker. “Our goal is to equip students with the skills and experience they need to be ethical leaders and decision-makers,” she says. “We want to ensure that our graduates have the confidence to take up space, wherever they are.”
Porscha (Dobson) Harnden ’03 was inducted into the Kent Place Athletic Hall of Fame in 2019. A trailblazer, she is the first African-American woman and only the third female to lead both a men’s and a women’s cross-country and track-and-field program in the Ivy League.
A LONG-TERM GOAL
“When I entered KPS, in Middle School, I was bold and confident, but I didn’t always know how to use my skills or channel my energy. I was encouraged to share my ideas, use my voice, accept criticism, exercise discipline, and pay attention to detail. I was encouraged to be my authentic self, but I learned that to be a good leader, you must also be a good follower. I always remember the KPS maxim: With wisdom, she lights the way. It reminds me that I’m a woman who is empowered to do anything.” Porscha (Dobson) Harnden ’03

“The timing has never been better for women to lead, and our work has never been more relevant than it is today,” she says. “We’ve begun to more intentionally expand opportunities for alumnae to support young women through mentorship and sponsorship, and it’s gratifying to watch as one group prepares the next to make their mark.”

Board leadership have had a profound impact on virtually every aspect of the school and its community. Remarks made about John by current and former Heads of School, fellow Board members, and friends are testament to their appreciation for the exemplary service, mentorship, and friendship he has provided. “For six years, John, you have been among my most trusted advisors and for a cumulative 34 years you have been an extraordinary Trustee and advisor for Kent Place. It’s you whom I call when I’m at a crossroads or when I need help determining how to approach an important topic with the Board. No matter what’s on your plate, you always respond within minutes,” said Head of School Jennifer Galambos. “A champion of girls, faculty, and academia, you’ve given so much to Kent Place. The event, held on October 12, 2023, brought together a community of parents, alumnae, Trustees, grandparents, and friends whose visionary investments have contributed significantly to Kent Place’s growth — making 2023 another record-breaking year for
Parents’ Association President Carlos Cruz P ’34 ’37
the Kent Place Fund and helping to ensure the school’s enduring success.
and Emeritus Trustee Nancy Reynolds P ’16 ’16
The evening began with a warm welcome, acknowledging the donors’ collective generosity to the 2022–2023 Kent Place Fund and their commitment to the school's mission. Their unwavering support serves as a beacon, guiding KPS toward new heights of excellence and making it possible for future generations of girls to enjoy the same unparalleled educational experiences that define Kent Place's legacy.
“One of the things I’m most proud of is that this past year we reached the highest parent participation in the Kent Place Fund the school has had. That speaks volumes to people's commitment to the mission

of Kent Place to empower girls to be confident, intellectual, ethical leaders who will, indeed, advance the world,” said Dr. Galambos.
Thank you to our donors for their leadership, inspiration, and vision in investing in the Kent Place experience.

The Oak Leaf Society The Oak Leaf Society recognizes donor loyalty to Kent Place School. Oak Leaf members make up a special community of donors with deep roots and a strong commitment. These investments are making a sustained difference at Kent Place — from informed and creative teaching, financial aid, and flagship programs such as the Ethics Institute and the Girls’ Leadership Institute to the arts, athletics, and so many other elements that make the KPS experience extraordinary. Oak Leaf Society members are donors who have made a gift for five or more fiscal years.
* Deceased Kent Place School is proud to acknowledge Oak Leaf participants at the following levels.

skills, a sense of ethics, and an ability to clearly express well-formed opinions are all part of the amazing educational foundation that Kent Place offers. I included KPS in my estate plans because the encouragement and care shown by the teachers and staff gave me confidence, inspiration, and a desire for lifelong learning— and I want to help ensure that this continues for others for generations to come.” —Stephanie Hersh ’79
