Message from the Chair of the Board

Dear Kent Place Community,

As I reflect on the 2023–2024 academic year, I’m repeatedly struck by the deep connections that propel this special community forward.

The successes achieved over the 12 months are a testament to the extraordinary guidance of our Head of School and the Leadership Team, the commitment of our faculty and staff, the enthusiasm of our students, and the support of our parents and alumnae.

Our mission statement is concise but compelling: “Kent Place School empowers girls to be confident, intellectual, and ethical leaders who advance the world.”

Over the past nine years, I’ve seen this mission in action through my own daughter’s experience. Now a senior, she prepares to graduate from Kent Place with a top-notch education and a wealth of memories.

I’ve also seen this mission realized in the selfless dedication of women such as longtime Board member Betsy (Busch) Crosby ’66 P ’93, the recipient of our inaugural Woodman Trustee Award (page 15). Betsy’s staunch commitment to this institution is both an inspiration and a potent reminder: Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders.

Our students are confident, as demonstrated when they use their voices on their own behalf and to lift up others. They are intellectual, as seen by their achievements in the classroom and beyond. They consider a variety of perspectives and practice ethical decision-making in undertakings like the Bioethics Project. And as graduates, they are advancing the world with their compassionate leadership.

Message from the Head of School

Dear Kent Place Community,

Whether in the classroom, on the stage, on the field, in the studio, or out in the community, fostering meaningful connections is at the core of everything we do. With that in mind, our theme for the 2023–2024 academic year was Deepening Connection in Community.

To say I experienced deepening connections every day is no exaggeration.

I saw it throughout campus. From the first day of school, when our seniors lined the walkways, cheering younger students as they arrived, to members of the Mock Trial team empowering one another to achieve their most triumphant season yet, from the Middle School’s overnight trip to Woodloch Pines, where all three grades bonded as one, to the first-grade Heritage Festival, where students explored their backgrounds and celebrated their differences — connection was everywhere.

I heard it in our students’ voices. Celia Kanellakos ’24 said to her class at Commencement: “It’s a journey that never ends, but it’s one that the legendary Class of 2024 is embarking on together. We may be apart, but we will always have a hive to come back to, friends that we’ll hold dear for the rest of our lives.” Annie Qi ’28 captured the essence: “I’ve discovered I have many common interests with my classmates, and even with my teachers. We enjoy trying new activities together, talking with each other, and helping each other out, just like being a family.”

I shared it with all our constituencies. Last December, more than 1,000 members of the Kent Place community gathered to witness the 100th performance of STAR. More than 200 alumnae returned to campus that evening, and many more participated through watch parties across the country. A remarkable 300 guests joined us for

Grandparents and Special Friends Day, and 150 graduates — from the Class of 1964 to the Class of 2019 — returned for Alumnae Weekend. And 75 faculty and staff came together on the Graduation Lawn to honor the Class of 2024.

It’s the strong bonds we build that tie us together, and it’s the dedication and commitment of supporters like you that enable us to do our vital work: to empower girls who advance the world.

Your support has led to incredible achievements.

• The 2023–2024 Kent Place Fund closed with a record-breaking $2.1 million in gifts.

• We celebrated our fifth community-wide Founders Day, unlocking challenges and raising additional funds.

• Parent volunteerism was at an all-time high, and the hours you dedicate to KPS are always humbling.

• Alumnae involvement — on boards, on committees, and at events — was stronger than ever.

Now we’re in our milestone 130th year, and I’m filled with excitement and inspiration. We’ll continue to build on our strong foundation, guided by a strategic vision for what’s to come. Thank you for your unwavering support of our brave and brilliant students.

Kent Place Honors Betsy (Busch) Crosby ’66 P ’93 with the

INAUGURAL WOODMAN

TRUSTEE AWARD

In 1979, 13 years after graduating from Kent Place, Betsy (Busch) Crosby ’66 P ’93 returned to Summit with her husband and two young children, settling into a house on Lorraine Road. That her new home was a stone’s throw from her alma mater was a coincidence, but a serendipitous one.

To Kent Place’s great benefit, her proximity marked the beginning of more than 40 years of dedicated service — not merely as a member of the Board of Trustees, but also as an indefatigable advocate for the school, skillful fundraiser, compassionate mentor, and visionary alumna.

As Betsy modestly says, “It all just came naturally.”

“IT WAS EASY TO SAY YES”

The very same year she relocated to Summit, Betsy was asked to serve on the Board of the Alumnae Association. “There I was, a block away from the school. My niece was a student at the time, and my children and I used to walk over to watch her play in her games,” she recalls. “I love Kent Place — I grew enormously there as a student and as a person — so I never thought twice about giving back. It was easy to say yes. My ongoing involvement has always been a natural, meaningful part of my life.”

Three years later, in 1982, she was elected President of the Alumnae Association, a position that conferred membership on the Board of Trustees. She never looked back.

Over the course of four decades on the Board, Betsy served as Vice President and chaired numerous committees, such as the Executive Committee, the Committee on Trusteeship, the Development Committee, and the Long-range Planning Committee. Always eager to facilitate connections among community members, she was a frequent host for school events.

In addition to guiding the Board through multiple capital campaigns, she led the search committee that hired eighth Head of School Arlene Gibson P ’90 ’94 (1987–1996), a role she says was “enormously gratifying.” As a successful Realtor in Summit for more than 30 years, she even helped 10th Head of School Sue Bosland P ’03 ’06 and her family find a suitable rental when Norwood House was undergoing renovations.

In fact, Betsy’s years of service on the Board spanned six Heads of School. “Betsy has been a helpful mentor to new Trustees and a vital source of institutional knowledge for me throughout my tenure

as Head,” said current Head of School Jennifer Galambos, during a gathering in Betsy’s honor last May. “She’s spent more hours stewarding Kent Place than we can count, ushering her beloved school through many changing eras with the utmost care for our students and alumnae.”

Particularly gratifying for Betsy, who retired from the Board in 2024, was getting to look at the “big picture,” as she describes it — that is, long-range planning for the school, including expansion and renovation projects to meet its future needs.

Her four decades on the Board saw the construction of new Primary and Upper Schools, a media center, the Center for Innovation, the Hyde and Watson Theater, the renovation of the Phraner Gymnasium, and the expansion of the McDermott-Wight Dining Hall, to name a few projects — not to mention the development of myriad curricular and extracurricular initiatives, such as the Girls’ Leadership Institute and the Ethics Institute at Kent Place School.

“When you put it all together over time, from the early 1980s on, it’s monumental to see how the school’s facilities have grown and changed. It’s kind of a ‘wow’ for me to take in,” Betsy says. “It’s been tremendously satisfying to watch how the school has adapted to the interests and needs of the students today.”

A SECOND HOME

Betsy’s legacy of service is perhaps even more striking given that her early years at Kent Place were marked by two personally traumatic events. The first occurred partway through eighth grade, barely a year after she arrived on campus.

She woke one morning to make hot chocolate before school, wearing a silk kimono her father brought her from a recent business trip to Japan. The sleeve suddenly caught fire, severely burning her arm. She received one of the earliest skin-grafting treatments at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and was absent from school for two months.

Just a few months later, the summer before her freshman year, her mother passed away.

“It was an emotionally turbulent time for me, but Kent Place always supported me,” Betsy says. “Looking back, it was like a second home.”

A competitive athlete, she joined the field hockey and basketball teams and played lacrosse, a sport the school introduced her senior year. And although her 40-year history on the Board would suggest otherwise, Betsy says that as a student she wasn’t an extrovert. Nevertheless, she was elected class president in the second half of her freshman year and went on to serve in that position during the rest of her time in the Upper School.

“Kent Place gave me a terrific foundation, in terms of academics, athletics, and leadership experiences,” she says. “I felt flattered and honored to be elected president by my classmates. Those friendships remain enormously meaningful to me.”

A FITTING HONOR

Last spring, Kent Place established the Woodman Trustee Award, a lifetime recognition honoring the pioneering work of sisters Anna and Sarah Woodman, who led the school from 1896 to 1924. Betsy was named, without question, its inaugural recipient by the Head of School and the Chair of the Board.

“During your tenure, you’ve demonstrated unwavering integrity and leadership marked by bravery, vision, and resilience,” said Chief Advancement Officer Coral Brooks, when presenting Betsy her award. “Your contributions have been invaluable, and we’re deeply grateful for your service to Kent Place.”

Never one to consider her own impact on the school, Betsy was surprised by the recognition. “It’s an honor beyond belief,” she says. “Kent Place has grown and flourished in countless ways over my many decades with the school. It has been a true pleasure to be a part of it all.”

Appreciated Securities
