Activities include arts & crafts, music and movement, story time, a multitude of manipulatives and building with small and large blocks. Indoor play is in our air-conditioned Primary building. Outdoor play takes place in our adjoining playground and includes sprinkler time, sandbox, water table, bicycles, balls, hula hoops, gardening, large chalkboard, painting and time on the playground equipment. Enjoy summer at its best: free-spirited play, picnics, theme days and visiting performers. Activities, coordinated around a weekly theme, include arts & crafts, music, computers, reader’s theater, nature and cooking. Physical activities include free play on our playgrounds and sports and games to develop gross motor skills. Full-day campers swim twice a week at The Connection for Women and Families in Summit. Staffed with early childhood educators, Junior Camp, with its low camper/counselor ratio, provides a nurturing, developmentally appropriate experience for beginning campers. Campers are grouped by grade.
Day Campers enjoy action-packed days filled with sports, games, art, musical theater, computers and nature, highlighted by weekly special events such as Gold Rush, Luau, Water Day, Field Day and visiting performers. Day Camp offers a wide variety of sports, including archery and tennis instruction. Swimming is held three times a week at The Connection for Women and Families in Summit. A daily free choice time gives campers an opportunity to choose from a variety of activities. Day Campers are grouped by age and sex, but have plenty of opportunity to form friendships with all campers and staff.

Summer Explorations is offering exciting summer “academies” that provide children the opportunity to focus on a specialized area of interest through dynamic week-long programs. These programs will be overseen by outstanding Kent Place faculty and staffed by outside professionals as needed to best suit our campers. Campers will spend the week engaged in high-level instruction in their interest area. Each week will conclude with an event for family and friends to highlight the work done by children.

Immerse your child into the Spanish culture in a hands-on experience that switch to indoor and outdoor and indoor activities. Campers will participate in a variety of activities such as cooking, handicrafts, karaoke and egg hunts to gain appreciation for the Spanish culture and practice their oral, listening, reading and writing skills. All activities will be conducted in Spanish.
Interested in different sports and games from around the world? In this week-long course campers will learn the rules and play sports from around the globe – including Handball, Cricket, Gaelic and Rugby!

Architectural Models Session I: June 28 – July 2 Boys and girls entering Grades 5 – 8 In this interdisciplinary workshop, campers will build nine real world architectural models that demonstrate Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), while discussing historical events relevant to these models. Example models include the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben and the Seattle Space Needle. Throughout the week, campers will strengthen and apply problem-solving skills in order to model, test, evaluate and modify their architectural models. Practical problems will be solved using science and technology concepts. With hands-on experience, campers will be exposed to careers that involve both technology and engineering.

Session I: June 28 – July 2 Session V: July 26 – 30 Boys and girls entering Grades 5 – 10 Campers will discover their inner engineer and kick their brain into high gear as they create an original Rube Goldberg contraption. This week-long summer program will develop problem-solving skills while navigating though the engineering and design process. Campers will tinker with wrecking balls, pulleys, springs, gears and more to create the chain reaction needed!
Gravity Rides! Session II: July 6 – 9 (There will be no camp Monday, July 5) Session IV: July 19 – July 23 Boys and girls entering Grades 3 – 8 Twists, turns, rolls and loops can all be explained through the study of roller coasters. During this week-long summer program, campers will explore Newton’s Laws of Motion and other basic physical science concepts. Campers will design and build their own roller coaster that will demonstrate their understanding of acceleration, velocity, frictional forces, potential and kinetic energy.
Do you love to build bridges? In this class campers will tour the bridges of the world, learn about the physics that makes them work, investigate the materials and methods of bridge construction and then build their own bridge to be tested!
Graphic Arts Sessions III: July 12 – 16 Boys and girls entering Grades 6 – 11 Have you wanted to design and create a business logo, magazine cover, product ad and more? Campers will learn design and color theory to make creations come alive. Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator will be used to take designs from thought to digital art. At the end of the course, campers will have a completed portfolio of their work.
Soar, Zoom and Whirl Session III: July 12 – 16 Session VI: August 2 – 6 Boys and girls entering Grades 5 – 10 Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to design a parachute that will keep your egg safe and then build a rocket powered car to test the acceleration capabilities against other campers. In this week-long summer program, campers will get a chance to explore their own creativity while immersing themselves in the engineering process as they explore the physics of force and motion.
Web design is a great introduction to the world of computer scripting and programming. In this course, campers will learn computer languages like HTML and CSS to create websites from scratch using pure code. Lines of code will transform into stylized text, viewable images and animations to create a website that will highlight one of their many interests. Campers will make websites pop with dynamic animations created with Adobe Flash and design animated headers, rollovers, time-based effects and more.
Video Game Creation Session V: July 26 – 30 Boys and girls entering Grades 5 – 10 Everyone likes to play video games. How about creating your own to share with friends? Campers will use programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Multimedia Fusion to design, create and test out game creations. This course focuses on creating arcade and platform games. Imagine Sonic, Mario Brothers, Tetris, PacMan-type games. At the end of the course, campers will take home a CD of their finished game. This course software and the finished game requires a Windows OS.

middle school camps Creative Arts Workshop Session I: June 28 – July 16 Session II: July 19 – August 6 Boys and girls entering Grades 5 – 8 Hours: 8:50 a.m. – 3:05 p.m. Tuition: $1380 per session ($460/week) $2600 – 6 week session (includes daily lunch and all supplies unless otherwise specified) The Creative Arts Workshop offers students an opportunity to unleash their creativity, energy and imagination and explore a variety of media each day. Students participate daily in five areas of interest and a camp-wide activity period, and share in performances and art exhibits. Teachers at the Creative Arts Workshop are artists and professionals chosen for their expertise and ability to spark creativity within their students. Special events, such as camp picnics, demonstrations by professional artists and visiting performers, are held each session. Students will be placed in five classes each session depending on date of enrollment and scheduling availability. Please make class selections when you register online. Creative Arts Workshop choices: • Activity Period: (Do not include in your selections.) Sports, crafts, community service projects and a variety of indoor and outdoor games provide fun, exercise and socialization for all campers. • Archery: A camper favorite! Learn skills and safety practices. • NEW! Art Science: Create a groovy, heatless lava lamp, explore momentum with spin art, design bubble art, develop “floam” with vinegar and skim milk and use food coloring, cooking oil, glue and dishwashing detergent to make uniquely colorful chemical “creactions.” Students will also create ooh-la-la oobleck, make their own recycled paper, dye flowers, create art with polished pennies and become designers in a Proj-egg-t Runway egg-speriment.

Choose from a wide variety of fantastic glazes to make your work shine! • Cooking Concoctions: Make healthy snacks and tasty treats in a cozy kitchen setting. Quesadillas, Nachos Supreme, gourmet personal pizzas and Asian-inspired stir-fry are a few of the delights campers will make. • NEW! Computer Assisted Drawing – 3D Models: Use Google Sketch Up to create 3D models of a skate park for your hometown, redecorate your living room, design a new piece of furniture or model your city for Google Earth. • NEW! Cultural Dance Class: Learn the basic steps to the energetic American Jive and Swing, Latin Ballroom Dances such as the Cha-Cha and Salsa, and the elegant moves of the Middle East. Campers perform a dance showcase at the end of each session. • NEW! Digital Art: Create original computer art by adding pizzazz to your work. Campers will design a resume, create their own business cards, understand how to locate professional and academic opportunities of interest, select appropriate interview attire, practice interviewing skills, review their Internet image (what potential employers might see if they did their research) and discuss the pros and cons of social networking sites. This course will show students how to shine amongst a multitude of applicants.
• Drawing & Painting: Explore and combine a variety of drawing media such as charcoal, pastel and colored pencil. Painting media includes watercolor and acrylic on canvas. The work and techniques of famous artists are also discussed. • Fashion Design: Design original fashions while learning fashion-sketching and color theory. Make-up application and techniques will also be included. • Knitting & Crocheting: Beginner through advanced learners are taught a variety of knit and crochet stitches and techniques to create items such as scarves, felt handbags, cell phone covers and baby gifts. Materials include a wide variety of specialty yarns. • NEW! Lights, Digital Cameras and Action!: Import photos and/or video into a movie-making program, design a photo layout, add music, insert titles and transitions and burn a DVD of the finished product, complete with a designed case. Campers will also create a camp news Podcast using iTunes, Photobooth and GarageBand. *Students must provide their own digital camera and USB cable. • Sculpture: Shape three-dimensional sculpture with papier mache, plaster, found objects, wire and wood. Use molds, casting and carving techniques to create original works of art. • Sewing: Using hand stitches and a sewing machine, sew items such as embellished envelope bags, machine stitched shoulder bags and quilted pillows. • Stained Glass: Cut and join together pieces of real stained glass to create two- and three-dimensional projects such as sun catchers, boxes, candle holders and window panels. • Tennis: Learn the strokes, rules, court tactics and etiquette of tennis through drills and play. • Theater Workshop: (double period, must attend a full session) Experience the many facets of a theatrical production and perform in a short play at the end of each three-week session. Success for Girls in Middle School August 9 – 13 Girls entering Grades 6 and 7 Hours : 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Tuition: $330 This class is designed to help girls make a successful transition into middle school, both academically and socially. Students learn study skills with emphasis on time management, organization, approaching and completing long-term assignments, note taking, test preparation and problem solving. Writing skills and math review are highlighted. Discussion and activities addressing social adjustment and successful interaction with teachers and peers help dispel concerns about a new school situation.

A $25 registration fee per family and a 50 percent tuition deposit must be included when you register online. The deposit is refundable until May 1, 2010, less a $100 administrative fee. Full payment for all camps and/or classes is due by June 1, 2010, and is nonrefundable for any reason after that date. Campers will forfeit their place if payment is not received by this date.
Morning extended care is available from 7:50 – 9:00 a.m. Activities include inside and outside play. Afternoon extended care is available from 3:00 – 5:30 p.m. From 3:05 – 4:00 p.m., campers participate in structured activities such as arts & crafts, computers, cooking, board and card games, and outside sports and games. Campers attending the Afternoon Sports programs can join extended care at 4:05 p.m. Snacks are served in the afternoon session.

Discounts: Family Referral Discount – $100 discount for you when a family that enrolls in camp uses your name as a referral. Sibling Discount – For children who have signed up for 6 weeks of camp only. Full price for first child, 5 percent off for multiple children also signed up for 6 weeks. Health Office: A registered nurse is on duty daily. Meals: Tuition includes a daily lunch for those campers enrolled in Junior Camp, Day Camp, Summer Academy, the Passport Program, the Creative Arts Workshop and the CIT Program. Due to the increasing number of campers with allergies, peanut butter is not served in our dining hall. Camp programs and lunches are designed for our general population of campers, therefore, we are not able to individualize diets or programs. Withdrawals: Withdrawals must be made in writing by May 1, 2010, to receive a refund of the 50 percent tuition deposit. A $100 administrative fee will be charged. After May 1, the deposit becomes nonrefundable. The balance of the tuition is due by June 1, 2010, and is nonrefundable for any reason.
CAMPER RESPONSIBILITIES Campers are expected to abide by the camp rules and conduct themselves in a responsible manner. Failure to do so could result in the child’s dismissal. Summer Explorations at Kent Place is not responsible for lost or stolen property. Campers should not bring valuable items to camp.
