Students attend Morning Meeting in the new Great Room.

WE’VE MOVED! Academic Center Opens its Doors On a sunny morning in April, Elizabeth Woodall, Director of the Upper School, officially moved the Morning Meeting bell from the Main Building to the new Academic Center, eagerly announcing to the group of 259 students that their traditional bi-weekly meeting would be held in their new home: the new Academic Center’s Great Room. “As my (freshman) class walked down the new stairs into the Great Room for our first Morning Meeting, sensations of happiness and excitement filled the room. The Great Room made everyone feel a part of the community because we could see everyone’s smiles that morning,” remarked student Janie McGraw. English, history and world language classes were held immediately in the new building, while the music and science departments waited for the finishing touches to be completed on their wings. Teachers had earlier explored the technology in their classrooms even before Mrs. Woodall’s announcement. “The girls have a lot of independence and involvement in learning here. They love the technology. Last week, in a single class period, they found images of Paris, projected them on the white board and talked about the multicultural neighborhoods we had studied. One student was at the board while the other was at the desk controlling the computer. In the old building, we simply did not have the space nor the equipment to give the girls such opportunities,” noted Katharine MacCornack, Chair of the World Language Department. “Following years of planning, decision-making, fundraising and construction, it is incredibly exciting to open the doors to the new Academic Center. It is not only a state-of-the-art facility where my daughter and her classmates will thrive academically, but it is also an accomplishment in which all alumnae, parents, faculty and staff can take pride,” adds Michael Bird, Vice President of the Board of Trustees and Campaign Chair. “The opening of the Academic Center is a significant statement about the belief in and support for Kent Place School.” KPS

HOW TO COMPLETE PHASE III: A TRANSFORMATIONAL GIFT With Phase I complete, and renovation of the current Upper School (Phase II) soon to begin, the Kent Place Board of Trustees will shortly decide on the timing of the capital campaign for Phase III, the last of our major construction projects. Phase III will provide a new visual arts center, a new library, partial renovation to our existing Middle School and an exterior upgrade to bring the architecture of the 1960s in line with the historic design of the rest of the campus. History shows that, during capital campaigns, schools can be the fortunate recipient of something called a “transformational” gift. This gift often comes as a surprise, a bequest or in the form of a challenge and acts as a catalyst to the successful completion of a campaign. We know of a gift that

was restricted for a nearby school as follows: “I will give you $X million now. When you have double-matched that amount from other donors, I will double my original gift.” Clearly, the donor knew how to motivate others and in so doing provided tremendous impetus to that campaign which went on to more than double its original goal. A transformational gift such as the one cited above will ensure the completion of the final phase of The Campaign for Kent Place School. Never in the history of the School has there been a more successful campaign. Our list of donors is extensive, and we remain grateful beyond measure for their wonderful generosity. Help us keep this momentum going and complete the final piece of the puzzle, Phase III. Need inspiration? Just come and see Phase I, the new Academic Center,

and soon, Phase II, the new Middle School. The construction is impressive, handsome, awe inspiring and completely in keeping with the kind of learning environment in which our faculty and students deserve to teach and learn every day. The successful completion of Phase III remains the top fundraising priority for Kent Place School. Simply stated, we need a major transformational gift to set the pace for this, the final phase of the campaign. We hope that someone reading this Campaign Newsletter will be moved to make such a gift either on their own or in combination with others. “Thank you” from the students, the administration, the faculty and staff, and all who have helped to Inspire Tomorrow’s Leaders. KPS

Message from Grandparent Committee Chairs Sandra and Art Williams III:

GRANDPARENTS RAISE ENOUGH MONEY TO NAME NOOK Our granddaughters are very special and dear to each of us. They project our selves, our families and our heritage. It is exciting to see them grow and develop into young women who can meet the challenges they will face in this century. And what a thrill it is to see them acquire the academic and leadership skills they need at such a caring and spirited school as Kent Place. As Phases I and II of The Campaign for Kent Place draw to a close, we are delighted to report that Kent Place grandparents have contributed or pledged over $400,000 to the Campaign. It is heartwarming but not surprising to see that grandparents recognized a time of need and responded so generously. We are also pleased to note that, in recognition of grandparents’ efforts, Kent Place has named a small, delightful nook at the top of the main staircase in the Academic Center. Here in front of the large windows overlooking the courtyard our granddaughters can gather and relax. Perhaps they will take a moment to think of their roles in time and place. Perhaps they will even ponder their relationship with their grandparents and the legacy they will carry with them.

Sandra and Art Williams III

Thank you for your generosity in investing in a bright future for our granddaughters. P.S. There is still time to make a gift, large or small, if you would like to be a part of this Grandparent initiative. Call Director of Development & Alumnae Relations Elizabeth Budd Bugliari ’59 at (908) 273-0900, ext. 213. KPS

“The new building is a blessing for technology. Each classroom has the same equipment, which makes support easier, plus the teacher station puts everything within the touch of a button for the teachers. The 3M digital projection system with annotation pod, which turns any wall surface into an interactive whiteboard, allows teachers to expand their interaction with students in creative ways.” – Kim Pearson, Director of Technology

“I love the Great Room. There is so much space and it is a great common area to have. I’m so glad I get to go through the rest of my high school career in classrooms that have so many resources for us. The projectors don’t get in the way in the classrooms, which leaves more space to fit all my books and my laptop on my desk with room to spare. I also like that I have enough room in my locker to keep my backpack in there along with all of my books. So far the new building has been a great addition to Kent Place.”

CONSTRUCTION DIARY: FINISHING TOUCHES After much anticipation, Kent Place School was recently granted a temporary certificate of occupancy for our new Academic Center, allowing for occupancy of the classroom and lounge areas. The Music Wing is still being completed and work has been confined to this area only. Upper School faculty and students are currently being relocated to the new Academic Center, leaving the Main Building vacant for renovations to begin in June. This will mark an end to Phase I of the Kent Place School construction project. TRANSITION WORK: • Campus computer servers will be moved into the new main distribution frame room. At this point, all campus technology equipment will be based in a specific storage area located in the basement of the new Academic Center. • Planned asbestos abatements will be performed. This process will be completed by a professional state-certified contractor. Air quality will be monitored by an independent company. • A temporary nurse’s office will be built in the Middle School wing. In addition, the second-

floor science labs will be retrofitted to accommodate a temporary art studio, a classroom, an additional bathroom and the technology department. • The reception desk, switchboard and campus police station will be relocated to the MS breezeway entrance. • Temporary partition walls will be built to seal off the Main Building from the MS wing and the new Academic Center during construction.

PHASE II Phase II of the Upper and Middle School Academic Center project consists primarily of transforming the existing Main Building into the new Middle School. To accomplish this, the nearly 100-year-old Tudor-style building will undergo a complete interior renovation. A high-efficiency mechanical and ventilation system will be installed to provide improved thermal comfort and indoor air quality while reducing energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. A new motion sensor-controlled energy efficient indirect lighting system will enhance illumination levels and comfort while reducing

The interior ceilings and finishes will be replaced with low-volatile organic compound (VOC) materials. In addition, all floor levels of the newly renovated building will be accessible to those with physical disabilities. The greater KPS community will be glad to know will be preserved and, in some cases, restored. The existing art studio, for example, was originally a large open study hall; the renovation will restore this room for use as the Middle School Commons. Students will have new lockers and furniture. The existing restrooms will be demolished and replaced with new facilities that utilize low-flow plumbing fixtures and have improved ventilation. Numerous safety and green design enhancements are included in the new upgrades.

KENT PLACE ALUMNAE CONTINUE TO PLAY A SIGNIFICANT ROLE IN THE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN By Elizabeth Budd Bugliari ’59 Director of Development & Alumnae Relations

amount was nearly identical to what we still needed for Phases I and II, was beyond surreal.

And then the telephone rang… On Thursday, December 17, 2008, the afternoon before Star, I was sitting in my office in Mabie House when the telephone rang.

As I pondered what had really happened I began to realize the difference that this bequest could make. Added to all the generous donations that had preceded it, we had now nearly achieved our dollar goal for Phases I and II. Our hopes and dreams for the single most significant fundraising effort in the history of the School were actually within reach. My only regret? I would never have the opportunity to thank this generous alumna in person.

My thoughts had been consumed that day by wondering how to close the gap between what we had already secured for Phases I and II, and our $25 million goal for The Campaign for Kent Place School. Imagine my surprise when the caller introduced herself as an attorney and said, “We will be wiring a substantial amount of money to you on Monday. Kent Place School was named as a recipient of an alumna’s bequest.” I replied that I was very sorry to hear of the woman’s passing, but how grateful we were that she chose to include Kent Place in her

estate plans. The attorney went on to say that it was quite a substantial amount and that once a parcel of real estate had been sold we would be beneficiaries of an additional gift. I thanked her, trying to maintain my good manners as well as curb my curiosity and said, “You cannot imagine how helpful this will be. We still have slightly in excess of $1 million to secure before June 2009.” Her answer was, “Well, that is very close to the amount of the bequest.” At that point I said, “No, who is this really? Please don’t tease because this would be huge for this school and this campaign.” After a bit, when I was finally convinced that this was not a crank call (or a member of my family!) I gathered my wits about me and went to tell Head of School Sue Bosland. Now please understand that this is not the first time that Kent Place has received a gift of close to a $1 million or more, but the timing of this gift, given the uncertain economy and the fact that the

I share this story with you hoping that you will enjoy the moment as much as I did, and trusting that when we do launch Phase III you will help us secure the additional dollars necessary to build a new library and visual arts center, renovate the interior of the current Middle School and upgrade the exterior architecture and landscaping of that building to bring it up to par with the rest of our beautiful campus. I wish that I could have told this story to each of you in person. The written word loses some of the excitement in translation, but exciting it is and transformational it will be. You and the Kent Place community are all partners in an historic effort that will help secure the financial health of the school and add to its already stellar reputation as a place where young women can receive the best that education has to offer, a place that will continue to Inspire Tomorrow’s Leaders.
