summer explorations at Kent Place is a coeducational, state-licensed program for boys and girls, 4 through 16 years old, providing fun, enrichment and opportunities for physical and social development in a safe, non-competitive atmosphere. Our beautiful 26-acre campus offers regulation artificial turf playing fields, playgrounds, a modern field house, five tennis courts, air-conditioned dining hall and classrooms, state-of-the-art computer labs and an arts center. Summer Express June 13 – 24 Boys and girls entering Grades 2 – 6 Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Tuition: $430 per week A fun-filled session featuring art, sports, drama, games, cooking and science. Special events include swimming, water day and a stage performance.
Hours: 9:00 a.m. – Noon Tuition: $320 per week $1930 – 6 week session Camp fun for boys and girls who have had a full year of nursery school, but will not be starting kindergarten in the fall. Activities include arts & crafts, music and movement, story time, a multitude of manipulatives and building with small and large blocks. Indoor play is in our air-conditioned Primary building. Outdoor play takes place in our newly renovated adjoining playground and includes sprinkler time, sandbox, water table, bicycles, balls, hula hoops, gardening, painting and time on our new playground equipment. The program fosters each child’s overall development.
Pre-K Camp Aftercare June 27 – August 5 Boys and girls ages 4 and 5 Hours: 12:00 – 2:50 p.m. Tuition: $150* per week This is an extended care program for working parents. 12:00 – 12:30 p.m.: Lunch in the classroom 12:30 – 1:00 p.m.: Recess 1:00 – 2:30 p.m.: Rest time with a movie 2:30 – 2:50 p.m.: Free play on the new playground before pick up *Campers can bring a bagged lunch or pay $15 per week for dining hall lunch services.

Staffed with early childhood educators, Junior Camp, with its low camper/counselor ratio, provides a nurturing, developmentally appropriate experience for beginning campers. Campers are grouped by grade.
Day Campers enjoy action-packed days filled with sports, games, art, musical theater, computers and nature, highlighted by weekly special events such as Gold Rush, Luau, Water Day, Race Day and visiting performers. Day Camp offers a wide variety of sports, including archery and tennis instruction. Swimming is held three times a week at The Connection for Women and Families in Summit. A daily free choice time gives campers an opportunity to choose from a variety of activities. Day Campers are grouped by age and sex, but have plenty of opportunity to form friendships with all campers and staff.
Traveling Adventures Camp – New This Year August 8 – 12 Boys and girls entering Grades 2 – 8 Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Tuition: $480 per week (includes a daily snack and a camp t-shirt) Traveling Adventures Campers will spend each day at an off-campus activity or two! The day will be spent traveling to one of the following adventurous places: Pump It Up, Color Me Mine, mini-golfing, bowling, Chuck E Cheese, a minor league baseball game and possibly even a movie. When time permits, campers may spend up to one hour in the morning and/or afternoon on-campus participating in field games, board games, computers and arts and crafts activities. Summer Explorations is offering exciting summer “academies” that provide children the opportunity to focus on a specialized area of interest through dynamic week-long programs. These programs will be overseen by outstanding Kent Place faculty and staffed by outside professionals as needed to best suit our campers. Campers will spend the week engaged in high-level instruction in their interest area. Each week will conclude with an event for family and friends to highlight the work done by children.
Campers will put on a complete musical and take part in acting, singing, dancing, set design, prop construction, lighting design and costume design. Parents will be invited to see the final production on the last day of camp.
Summer Academy choices:
Dive into science in this week-long course for intermediate and middle school boys and girls! Explore the solar system, become a forensic scientist, and do chemistry experiments! Come with us while we explore the many different branches of SCIENCE!
Have Fun Learning Spanish July 5 – 8 (There will be no camp Monday, July 4) Boys and girls entering Grades 3 – 6 Immerse your child into the Spanish culture in a hands-on experience that includes outdoor and indoor activities. Campers will participate in a variety of activities such as cooking, handicrafts, karaoke and egg hunts to gain appreciation for the Spanish culture and practice their oral, listening, reading and writing skills. All activities will be conducted in Spanish.
Discover Science! Session I: June 27 – July 1 Boys and girls entering Grades 4 – 7
A hands-on course that teaches students basic carpentry skills such as measuring, sawing, drilling, sanding, assembly and painting. Campers will construct a variety of fun and useful projects as they explore working with wood. Concepts such as abstract reasoning, applied mathematics, problem-solving, craftsmanship and respect for tools will be also be emphasized.

NEW! Literature Workshop July 18 – 22 Boys and girls entering Grades 2 – 5 Bring your imagination to the Literature Workshop! Campers will create a Writer’s Notebook to record thoughts, feelings, ideas and observations both during the workshop and after. Campers will also use the Writing Process to draft, revise and publish poetry, essays and a book. We will share our reactions to reading in literature discussion groups and perform a “Reader’s Theater” production.
NEW! How Does it Work? How is it Made? August 1 – 5 Boys and girls entering Grades 2 – 5 What really happens when you flip on a light switch, turn a key in a lock, or make a telephone call? Why does soap clean things? This class will provide hands-on activities that will lead your child to answers satisfying their natural curiosity. In this week-long summer program, campers will get a chance to explore their own creativity while immersing themselves in the engineering process as they explore the physics of force and motion.

Gravity Rides! Session I: July 11 – 15 Session II: July 25 – 29 Boys and girls entering Grades 3 – 8 Twists, turns, rolls and loops can all be explained through the study of roller coasters. During this week-long summer program, campers will explore Newton’s Laws of Motion and other basic physical science concepts. Campers will design and build their own roller coaster that will demonstrate their understanding of acceleration, velocity, frictional forces, potential and kinetic energy.
Can You Build It? – Yes We Can! Session I: July 18 – 22 Boys and girls entering Grades 4 – 7 Based on the TV series Design Squad™ this course will introduce students to the engineering process. Students will engage in a variety of activities that will challenge their math skills, problem solving skills and creative abilities. This course is designed to promote innovative thinking while learning to design and create interesting gadgets.
Campers will discover their inner engineer and kick their brain into high gear as they create an original Rube Goldberg contraption. This week-long summer program will develop problem-solving skills while navigating though the engineering and design process. Campers will tinker with wrecking balls, pulleys, springs, gears and more to create the chain reaction needed!

middle school camps Creative Arts Workshop June 27 – August 5 Boys and girls entering Grades 5 – 8 Hours: 8:50 a.m. – 3:05 p.m. Tuition: $465 per week $2660 – 6 week session (includes daily lunch and all supplies unless otherwise specified) The Creative Arts Workshop (CAW) offers students an opportunity to unleash their creativity, energy and imagination and explore a variety of media each day. Students participate daily in four areas of interest and a camp-wide activity period. The Activity Period (do not include in your selections) encompasses crafts, community service projects and a variety of indoor and outdoor games to provide fun, exercise and socialization. CAW teachers are artists and professionals chosen for their expertise and ability to spark creativity within their students. Special events, such as camp picnics, demonstrations by professional artists and visiting performers, are held throughout the summer. Theater performances and art shows will be on July 15 and August 5. Students will be placed in our classes each week depending on date of enrollment and scheduling availability. Creative Arts Workshop choices: • Archery: A camper favorite! Learn skills and safety practices. • Art Science: Create a groovy, heatless lava lamp, explore momentum with spin art, design bubble art, develop “floam” with vinegar and skim milk and use food coloring, cooking oil, glue and dishwashing detergent to make uniquely colorful chemical “creactions.” Students will also create ooh-la-la oobleck, make their own recycled paper, dye flowers, create art with polished pennies and become designers in a Proj-egg-t Runway egg-speriment.
• Beading: Learn various wire-wrapping techniques, stitching, stringing and making beads out of polymer clay to create one-of-a-kind jewelry. • NEW! Cake Decorating: Make and decorate unique cakes. Be the next Queen or King of Cakes! Learn the basics of cake sculpture, butter cream, cocoa painting, marzipan-style figures, fancy borders w/basic tips, piping, writing made easy and fondant and modeling chocolate uses. • Cooking Classic Comfort Foods: (double period) Prepare appetizers, main courses, salads and desserts while learning basic kitchen skills and healthy eating habits. Compose your own cookbook with original recipes and illustrations. • Drawing & Painting: Explore and combine a variety of drawing media such as charcoal, pastel and colored pencil. Painting media includes watercolor and acrylic on canvas. The work and techniques of famous artists are also discussed. • Fashion Design: Design original fashions while learning fashion-sketching and color theory. Campers will create a portfolio with their own unique designs! • NEW! Internet Explorers: Campers will embark on exciting technology adventures utilizing the Internet to complete creative tasks such as developing a website, creating a calendar, becoming an architect with design sites, having fun with digital photography, designing their own CD and label, creating a podcast or short movie, adding music and much more! • Knitting & Crocheting: Beginner through advanced learners are taught a variety of knit and crochet stitches and techniques to create items such as scarves, felt handbags, cell phone covers and baby gifts. Materials include a wide variety of specialty yarns.

Scrapbooking: Discover how your photographs, journaling, titling, memorabilia, embellishments, lettering and color can work together for great personal pages and books. • Sculpture: Shape three-dimensional sculpture with papier mache, plaster, found objects, wire and wood. Use molds, casting and carving techniques to create original works of art. • Sewing: Using hand embroidery and a sewing machine, sew items such as hand-embellished envelope bags, machine stitched shoulder bags, a basic skirt and hand-pieced quilted pillows. • Stained Glass: Cut and join together pieces of real stained glass to create two- and three-dimensional projects such as sun catchers, boxes, candle holders and window panels. • Tennis: Learn the strokes, rules, court tactics and etiquette of tennis through drills and play. • Theater Workshop: Campers act as performers, designers, stagehands and technicians. Classes include acting, scene study, improvisation, music theory, singing and dancing. Theater Workshop fosters teamwork, introducing campers to all aspects of putting a show together in a professional, interactive and theatrical environment. Productions will be July 15 and August 5. Campers may still participate in Theater Workshop if they cannot attend the production dates. • NEW! Written & Illustrated by You! Campers will be the writers, editors and illustrators of their own stories! Our Counselor-in-Training program will help participants develop lifelong skills, identify and achieve individual goals and build skills to lead children. CITs will work and train under the current Counselors in charge. Participants will learn first aid, CPR, group and time management and a variety of program skills through first-hand experience with campers of different ages. Grades K – 2 (Weeks 1, 3 and 5) Grades 3 – 8 (Weeks 2, 4 and 6) Campers will have the opportunity to create tasty treats in our new cooking clinic! Students will make delicious snacks daily, learning how to follow a recipe and correctly measure ingredients.
Archery Grades 2 – 8 Beginner and intermediate instruction in skills and safety with students earning competency certificates. Instructor certified by the National Archery Association. Also offered from 4:35 – 5:35 p.m.
Tennis Grades 1 – 8 Instruction in strokes, rules, court tactics and etiquette with participants grouped according to ability for play.
Sports Galore Grades K – 2 (Weeks 2, 4 and 6) Grades 3 – 8 (Weeks 1, 3 and 5) Grades K – 2 Practice in beginning sports skills and games including t-ball, soccer, kickball and basketball. Focus is on skills such as throwing, kicking, catching, hitting, dribbling and teamwork. Grades 3 – 8 Older campers will have the opportunity to work on skills in sports such as lacrosse, softball, basketball and volleyball. Focus is on improving skills, understanding the fundamentals of each sport and the importance of teamwork.
Art Explosion! Grades 4 – 8 Campers will have the opportunity to explore a different visual art medium each week. Work in drawing, painting, sculpture, digital photography, ceramics and textiles will be explored. Students will take home their projects at the end of each week.
AUGUST EXPLORATIONS Excel August 15 – 19 Boys and girls entering Grades 3 – 5 Hours: 9:00 a.m. – Noon Tuition: $260 An integrated learning experience designed to challenge the more advanced student. Students actively participate in this program, which combines elements of math, problem solving, language arts and technology.
Success for Girls in Middle School August 15 – 19 Girls entering Grades 6 and 7 Hours : 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Tuition: $335 This class is designed to help girls make a successful transition into middle school, both academically and socially. Students learn study skills with emphasis on time management, organization, approaching and completing long-term assignments, note taking, test preparation and problem solving. Writing skills and math review are highlighted. Discussion and activities addressing social adjustment and successful interaction with teachers and peers help dispel concerns about a new school situation.

www.kentplace.org/summerexplorations Enrollment is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis. A $25 registration fee per family and a 50 percent tuition deposit must be sent within two weeks after you register online.
Morning extended care is available from 7:30 – 9:00 a.m. Activities include inside and outside play. Afternoon extended care is available from 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. From 3:05 – 4:30 p.m., campers participate in structured activities such as arts & crafts, computers, cooking, board and card games, and outside sports and games. Campers attending the Afternoon Clinics programs can join extended care at 4:30 p.m. Snacks are served in the afternoon session.
Open House: March 5, 2011, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. at the Kent Place Dining Hall Cancellation: Kent Place reserves the right to cancel any programs that do not have sufficient enrollment. Discounts: Family Referral Discount – $100 discount for you when a family that enrolls in camp uses your name as a referral. Sibling Discount – For children who have signed up for 6 weeks of camp only. Full price for first child, 5 percent off for multiple children also signed up for 6 weeks. Health Office: A registered nurse is on duty daily. Meals: Tuition includes a daily lunch for those campers enrolled in Junior Camp, Day Camp, Summer Academy, the Passport Program, the Creative Arts Workshop and the CIT Program. Due to the increasing number of campers with allergies, peanut butter is not served in our dining hall. Camp programs and lunches are designed for our general population of campers, therefore, we are not able to individualize diets or programs. Withdrawals: Withdrawals must be made in writing by May 1, 2011, to receive a refund of the 50 percent tuition deposit. A $100 administrative fee will be charged. After May 1, the deposit becomes nonrefundable. The balance of the tuition is due by June 1, 2011, and is nonrefundable for any reason.
CAMPER RESPONSIBILITIES Campers are expected to abide by the camp rules and conduct themselves in a responsible manner. Failure to do so could result in the child’s dismissal. Summer Explorations at Kent Place is not responsible for lost or stolen property. Campers should not bring valuable items to camp.
