Art Night

I was born and bred in Nagoya City, Japan. In childhood I struggled to understand love due to my mother’s twisted affection and loneliness. I couldn’t find myself and I felt a cruel emptiness inside. As a result 15 years ago I came to Birmingham, Alabama to find freedom. In fact I found that there isn’t freedom but a lot of limitations. At first I was a stranger, an alien from another planet who could not speak or understand the language. I decided to go to school to learn English for communication. Then I was getting to see what I couldn’t see before; there are a lot of gaps between others and me due to discriminations and stereotypes of Asian girls. I began to create art to express my mind without using the sound of speech. I have always been interested in the human mind. I studied Children psychology at the university I attended in Japan. In my Tangled Hair Series, I’m symbolizing the different memories, feelings, and behaviors our minds create that affect our lives.

I create each piece of art by first making a pencil outline. After it is complete I paint artist acrylics on wood panels and rice paper from my native Japan. I use fine brushes as they allow me to achieve the detail I require and the ability to paint each strand of hair.

The University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center provides outreach, advocacy, and services to empower women and to encourage their full, active participation in the university and community. The Center provides a variety of services, including victim advocacy, counseling, prevention and education programs, awareness events, self-defense training, and many other services.

The Wounded Heart is a survivor art exhibit that offers visual testimony to the impact of violence in our lives. Survivors, artists, and those concerned about survivors are invited to use wooden hearts as vehicles of expression and healing. This moving exhibit invites everyone to bear witness and honor the healing power of the human heart. The project was inspired by the exhibit Corazón Lastimado through Arte Sana (“Art Heals”), a non-profit organization based in Austin, Texas that believes in the healing power of art and culture. Goals: Offer a vehicle of expression and healing to those affected by violence both directly and indirectly, especially those survivors who have been typically underserved or marginalized. 

Use art to educate and generate public awareness about the issues relating to violence and its incredible impact in the lives of so many.

A box for the collection of cell phones will be provided at the exhibit. These will be distributed by Verizon Hopeline to survivors of domestic violence. For more information see the link below. http://aboutus.verizonwireless.com/commitment/community_programs/hopeline/
