September 15, 2012

The 41st Annual Kentuck Festival of the Arts is almost here! We’ve finetuned the music and story-telling schedule since our last update and added some new artists, so have a look inside. If you haven’t taken part in our patron program before--or if you can’t wait to do it again this year, see the details at http://www.kentuck.org/patronpage.html. You can become a patron at any time, including after you arrive at the festival, but register now to enjoy the full package of benefits, including the festival launch party on October 19. Festival tickets are on sale now in the Kentuck Shop at 503 Main Avenue, Northport, AL, and online at http://www.kentuck.org/tickets.html. Weekend passes are $15 and only available in advance (through 5 p.m. on Friday, Octobe 19). At the park, admission for people over age 12 is $10 per day. This year’s festival will have deeply poignant aspects as well as the usual joys: we dedicate Kentuck 2012 to the memory and the legacies of two remarkable women who passed away this year: our founding director and forever friend Georgine Clarke, and Carolyn Fritz, who led Kentuck for Kids for over 20 years. All of the volunteers and staff of Kentuck intend to make them proud.

KENTUCK FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS The Kentuck Festival of the Arts is a two-day outdoor juried arts festival featuring more than 250 artists from across the United States who fill Kentuck Park with folk and contemporary art and fine crafts. Nationally acclaimed visionary folk artists talk freely with visitors, while expert traditional artisans demonstrate their craftwork. To this feast of visual arts, add performances by legendary and upcoming musicians, free children’s arts activities, plus Southern and ethnic food specialties, and you’ve got the Kentuck Festival of the Arts! No wonder Time Magazine in 2009 selected Kentuck as the Authentic American Experience in Alabama—or that the American Style magazine poll ranked us as the #6 festival in the nation in 2010. “Zig Zag” The 2012 Festival Quilt by Hallie O’Kelley, Tuscaloosa, Ala.

WHY “KENTUCK” WHEN YOU’RE IN ALABAMA?

Kentuck was the original name for the settlement that became Northport, Alabama. The Kentuck Museum Association—a non-profit community organization encompassing the Kentuck Festival of the Arts, the Art Center and the Museum—evolved from the festival, which began in 1971 as a centennial celebration of Northport’s founding. The festival quickly grew and moved to nearby Kentuck Park in 1973 to accommodate additional artists and visitors. This large wooded park has been the site of the annual festival ever since.

KENTUCK HIGHLIGHTS • • • • • • • •

More than 250 exhibitors in a highly competitive juried show In 2011, brought 12,000 people to Kentuck Park and generated nearly $400,000 in artists’ sales, serving as an important economic engine for the area Listed as the “Authentic American Experience” for Alabama by CNN/Time.com Designated a Top Ten Art Festival by American Style magazine Named in 100 Best Small Arts Towns in America Designated a “Local Legacy” by the U.S. Library of Congress Recipient of Governor’s Arts Award in 1980 Previously selected as a top 20 for October by Southeast Tourism Society

TIME, PLACE, AND ADMISSION

Saturday, October 20 and Sunday, October 21, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Kentuck Park, 3501 Fifth Street, Northport, Alabama. Advance-purchase-only weekend passes for both days of the festival are $15; day passes are $10 in advance or at the gate. Children under twelve are admitted free. Tickets may be purchased online at www.kentuck.org/tickets.html or by calling the Kentuck office at 205-758-1257.

IS KENTUCK JUST THE FESTIVAL?

Kentuck is not just the festival. The Kentuck Art Center, at 503 Main Avenue, includes the Courtyard of Wonders where shaded nooks are surrounded by fanciful metal sculptures, intricate mosaics, and intriguing entrances to working studios, the Museum building, and the adjacent Clarke Building. We have a three-part mission: to perpetuate the arts, to empower artists, and to engage the community. We fulfill that mission through our programming and facilities, and thanks in great part to the support of corporate sponsors. Kentuck’s programming includes classes and workshops, two new exhibitions each month, first-Thursday Art Night and third-Saturday a la cARTe, outreach to schools and the community, and Art Fairs at which local artists can sell their work. On the campus, the juried Studio Artists are independent businesspeople who make their living with their art and craft and rent Kentuck’s studios, welcoming visitors to watch them work. The Gallery Shop at Kentuck sells the work of artists and artisans from all around the country.

205-758-1257 kentuck@kentuck.org www.kentuck.org 503 Main Avenue Northport, Alabama 35476

Kentuck also operates The Clay Place, a group studio in which Kentuck Clay Co-op members, who are hobby potters at all skill levels, pay a monthly fee for access to equipment, working space, and storage space for their work in progress. Over the past three years Kentuck has made tremendous strides in rehabbing its facilities, almost all through the work of volunteers who have been willing to get very dirty and work long hours. The result is that we now have more exhibition and classroom space, a big multiuse room for classes and gatherings, and the clay studio. Kentuck is on the move, and we welcome and appreciate your support.

KENTUCK OASIS FOR ARTISTS,

CORNUCOPIA FOR COLLECTORS

Visitors to the Kentuck Festival of the Arts see and shop for superb art from all visual genres at prices ranging from spare-change treat to serious investment. The artists who display their work at Kentuck are thoughtfully selected contemporary jewelers, potters, weavers, fine woodworkers, glass artists, photographers, sculptors, painters, and metal artists whose distinction sets Kentuck apart from other Southern festivals. One-of-a-kind quilts and found-object sculptures and mosaics share the park with beautiful split-oak baskets, exquisitely worked wood, and traditional pottery. Visitors find contemporary blown glass next to etchings, painting, ceramic sculpture, and photo montages. A walk around the corner brings willow chairs, whimsical whirligigs, batik and raku, followed by steel and wooden furniture, fresco paintings, and handmade paper. The diversity and quality of the work of the juried artists at this festival, combined with the presence of the curated folk and visionary artists and demonstrating artists, places Kentuck among the country’s most prominent festivals.

AWARDS & JUDGING KENTUCK FESTIVAL AWARDS

Awards are presented for the following: one Best of Show, two Awards of Distinction, and twelve Merit Awards with a total monetary prize totaling $5,200.

FESTIVAL JUDGES 2012

This year’s festival judges are Kate Lydon, director of exhibitions for the Society of Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh, PA, and member of the Board of Governors of the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts; and Dr. Catherine Pagani, professor of art history and chair of the Department of Art and Art History, The University of Alabama.

PATRON PURCHASE PROGRAM

Visitors can enjoy an additional dimension of participation in the festival through the Patron Purchase Program. Depending on the level of patronage chosen— Patron, Collector, or Benefactor—participants receive weekend festival passes, early-bird shopping privileges, invitations to special events, Kentuck Bucks (vouchers for purchasing art from festival exhibitors), patron ribbons to award to favorite artists, and other amenities including admission to the patron hospitality pavillion throughout the festival. For more information, go to www.kentuck.org/patronpage.html.

MUSIC & STORYTELLING The musical and spoken word performances at Kentuck this year draw from deep and diverse sources of Southen culture, from African drumming to Celtic fiddling, bluegrass to zydeco, hot New Orleans jazz to gospel, 21st century songwriting to Sacred Harp a cappella singing. Performances will alternate on two stages on opposite sides of the park as always, but with a difference this year: the Festival Acoustic Venue will present unplugged musicality and engrossing storytelling in an intimate theatre-in-the-round setting.

KENTUCK FOR KIDS Engaging children in the thrill of creating art and craft with their own hands is the guiding goal of Kentuck for Kids. In the center of the Festival and in some other locations throughout the park, volunteers provide children and their parents with hands-on art and building adventures— • befriending a new musical instrument at the musical petting zoo, • drawing a self-portrait, • shaping clay, • nailing together a birdhouse, • tie-dying fabric, • working with fiber, • marbling paper, • crafting cornhusk dolls, • impressing and stamping paper. lways something interesting, and A always something to take home and treasure for a while! Children also can choose to be the canvas for custom face painting to celebrate their personalities or favorite animals, teams, or flowers. The Kentuck for Kids area is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., opening an hour after and closing an hour before the rest of the Festival. Children must be accompanied by an adult or by a responsible teen, for everyone’s safety and enjoyment. All activities are free, and some have an additional component (for example, tie-dying a t-shirt instead of a bandana) available for a reasonable fee. Please remember that creativity can be messy, and the dyes used for tie-dying are permanent. Bring your kids to the park in clothes and shoes that they don’t have to worry about keeping clean. Kentuck for Kids is made possible by the dedicated volunteers and groups that give their time to the Festival. In addition to the core Kentuck for Kids volunteers, groups that enrich children’s Festival experience and appreciation for the making of art include the Children’s Handson Museum, the Tuscaloosa Symphony Guild, University of Alabama book arts and ceramics students, the Kentuck Clay Co-op, the Alabama Art Kitchen, the West Alabama Fiber Guild, and the West Alabama Woodworkers Association. This year Kentuck for Kids is a particular gift of love as we honor the memory and legacy of Carolyn Fritz, the tireless volunteer who led Kentuck for Kids for over 20 years, who passed away this spring.

DEMONSTRATING ARTISTS 2012

KEEPING AWARENESS OF TRADITIONAL CRAFT ALIVE GIVING TRADITIONAL CRAFT CONTEMPORARY STYLE Kentuck began as a Northport centennial celebration featuring reenactments and demonstrations of southern folkways. While the festival has expanded both in size and scope over its 41-year history, we continue to value the work of traditional artisans. Their work at Kentuck helps bring awareness of these crafts to new generations.Throughout the Festival, throughout the park, Kentuck’s Demonstrating Artists show the techniques of their work. These artists include members of local craft guilds and university students as well as visiting artists from around the state and nation. Many offer the opportunity for you to try your hand in their medium! Book Arts University of Alabama   Book Arts Program Claire Siepser

Tickets go on sale August 1, 2012 for the nationally-acclaimed Kentuck Festival of the Arts in Northport, Alabama, October 20 & 21. The Kentuck Festival of the Arts is a two-day outdoor juried arts festival featuring more than 250 artists from across the United States who fill Kentuck Park with folk and contemporary art and fine crafts. Nationally acclaimed visionary folk artists talk freely with visitors, while expert traditional artisans demonstrate their craftwork, including blacksmithing, metalwork, chair caning, basket weaving arts, and quilting. To this feast of visual arts, add performances by legendary and upcoming musicians, children’s arts activities, plus Southern and ethnic food specialties, and you’ve got the Kentuck Festival of the Arts! No wonder Time.com in 2009 selected Kentuck as the Authentic American Experience in Alabama—or that it has been featured in Smithsonian Magazine and Southern Living. We’re also proud to announce that the readers of American Style magazine have again in 2012 ranked Kentuck as a “Top Ten Festival in the USA .” Kentuck for Kids, the interactive art environment in the center of the Festival, entertains both young and old with an invitation to befriend orchestral instruments at the musical petting zoo, to shape clay with experienced potters, to tie-dye fabrics, marble papers, and explore other arts. Most Kentuck for Kids activities are free, or ask a nominal fee for additional materials. In addition to the wealth of visual arts and interactive activities, musical acts perform live throughout the weekend. Parking is limited; free continuous shuttles provide transportation to the park from downtown Northport locations. Advance purchase only weekend tickets are $15 for ages 12 and up and must be purchased before 5 p.m. on Friday, October 19. Daily tickets are $10 per person per day. Tickets can be purchased online at www.kentuck.org/tickets.html or at the gate. Children under 12 are admitted free. For additional information or call (205) 758-1257. To request a brochure on the Patron Purchase program call or email Kentuck at kentuck@kentuck.org. ###
