A Letter from the
President
After enduring the challenge of the century, we can see a light nearing — one our community continues to shine even in the face of still so much uncertainty. Our UK Alumni Association has worked tirelessly to build on the rich relationships we have with you, our valued friends of this university, so that our roots continue to grow far and wide beyond the walls of this institution. After all, it’s never been more important to stay connected. That’s why we’ve created a new UK Alumni Directory to make sure we remain in touch despite new challenges we must overcome. In the following pages, you’ll find resources and information regarding the university, as well as our programs and priorities. This new directory will allow you to share more than your alma mater with your former classmates — it will bring opportunities to rediscover who we are as a Big Blue Nation. Together, we will see what’s possible. Thank you for all you do to support and fulfill our sacred promise to the Commonwealth and the world.

A Letter from the
Executive Director
Thank you for your participation in the UK Alumni Directory Project! It is hard to believe that it has been nearly five years since our last project in 2017 — and even harder to believe what a different world we live in now. When I accepted the honor of serving as the executive director of the UK Alumni Association in February 2020, I had no idea of the unprecedented year in store for all of us. Although the last few years have been challenging, to say the least, I find myself inspired by the enduring spirit of our UK family. The University of Kentucky Alumni Association exists to celebrate Wildcat spirit, preserve honored traditions and serve all alumni, friends and students of UK. Since its inception over 130 years ago, the association has been a touchpoint for alumni to connect, serve and support their beloved alma mater. The impact made by UK alumni, like you, over the years is immeasurable. You are the heart of Big Blue Nation, and your Wildcat spirit and advocacy for this institution are why UK can continue to thrive and evolve to become the University FOR Kentucky in the 21st century. I appreciate your desire to stay connected to your UK family through the purchase of this directory. This valuable resource can be used to find former classmates and to build your professional network. Most important, I hope it serves as a reminder that you are part of a powerful community that spans the globe and truly has a positive effect on your alma mater and the world we share. The UK Alumni Association looks forward to serving you today and in the future. Warmest Regards,
Jill H. Smith ’05, ’11 Associate Vice President for Alumni Engagement Executive Director UK Alumni Association

History of the
University of Kentucky The University of Kentucky was established as a land-grant institution in 1865 by John Bryan Bowman and was initially called the Agricultural and Mechanical College (A&M) of Kentucky, a publicly chartered department of Kentucky University after receiving federal support through the Morrill LandGrant Act. Courses were held in Lexington at Ashland, the Henry Clay estate, and were overseen by John Augustus Williams. A year later in October, A&M opened its doors to approximately 190 students who would be taught by 10 professors. Study was important to the all-male school, and military training was required as a condition of enrollment. There were no recreational activities or sports allowed until 1872 when debate and oratory became an option. In 1869, James K. Patterson, a native of Scotland, became the presiding officer and is now considered to have been UK’s first president. The first student to receive a degree from A&M was W. B. Munson, who did so in 1869.
vi
In 1878, A&M split apart from Kentucky University and then became known as State College. This new name brought new changes, including a new location — 52 acres on Limestone Street. The first college football game ever played in the South (Centre vs. Kentucky University — now Transylvania) took place at what would later be called Stoll Field in 1880. In operation by 1882 with four campus buildings, State College allowed females to become students, with Arabella “Belle” Clement Gunn becoming the first woman to receive a degree in 1888. While academics were important, students were interested in sports and traditions. In 1892, royal blue and white were chosen as official colors for the school. A different color set, blue and light yellow, was adopted earlier at a Kentucky-Centre College football game on Dec. 19, 1891. Shortly after, in 1892, Professor A. M. Miller became the head coach of the football program. When basketball made its way to campus, it came via the women’s team in 1902. It was a year later in 1903 that a men’s basketball team came into existence. In 1908, a monumental change took place. State College acquired a new name — State University, Lexington, Kentucky — in light of its new mission to be a school that would be dedicated to research and teaching. James K. Patterson, who was responsible for so very much of the evolution of the university with individual colleges, retired in 1910.
The next 100 years saw achievement and growth in teaching and research that would make the Commonwealth proud. Starting with the building of a central library, through generous funding by Andrew Carnegie; the formation of a graduate school headed by Dean Alexander St. Clair McKenzie; formation of the first student newspaper which later became the Kentucky Kernel; another name change to the University of Kentucky; completion of Memorial Hall in 1929; incorporation of the UK Research Foundation in 1945; dedication of the Albert B. Chandler Medical Center in 1960 and the opening of the College of Medicine and the College of Nursing; the library adding its one millionth volume to its shelves in 1963; the implementation of the Community College System in 1964, as well as formation of the innovative Donovan Scholars Program. The 1970s saw the establishment of the Office of Minority Student Affairs; the retirement of Adolph Rupp, the winningest coach in Kentucky basketball history; the opening of Commonwealth Stadium; the first UK basketball game in Rupp Arena; and the dedication of the Singletary Center for the Arts. The university continued its advancement, and in 1993, UK adopted a five-year plan to raise admission standards and assign more full-time faculty to teach undergraduate courses. Another impressive development was that UK was able to finance the construction of a new library without state funding, opening the William T. Young Library in 1998. The turn of the century also brought dramatic changes to the campus landscape. The Administration Building was consumed by fire during renovations, leading to a successful restoration that resulted in today’s Main Building.
Among other changes on campus, the College of Engineering opened a new Mechanical Engineering Building in the early part of the 2000s and in 2011 also opened the Davis Marksbury Building on Rose Street. As part of the university’s medical campus renovation, UK built a new College of Pharmacy and University Health Service facility, and constructed the 1-million-square-foot UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital. Pavilion A of the hospital opened in 2011. Dr. Eli Capilouto became the 12th president of the University of Kentucky July 1, 2011. Under his leadership, 14 new residential facilities and 20 new dining facilities have been opened across campus. In 2015, the School of Art and Visual Studies Building found a new home on Bolivar Street by turning a historic tobacco processing plant into a 21st century facility. In 2016, the Don & Cathy Jacobs Science Building was completed and in 2018, the Healthy Kentucky Research Building and Bill Gatton Student Center opened its doors. The Gatton College of Business and Economics Building and the newly renamed J. David Rosenburg College of Law Building were also renovated and expanded. Kroger Field, formerly known as Commonwealth Stadium, was revitalized and Kentucky Proud Park was opened to host the Kentucky baseball team. These successes of the university have been made possible in part by the support of UK alumni around the world. Moving forward, the university will continue to grow and prosper, and its graduates will achieve success in a variety of fields, representing the wildly possible outcomes of obtaining an education at the flagship university of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

History of the
UK Alumni Association
The University of Kentucky Alumni Association traces its history to 1889, when Joseph H. “Little Joe” Kastle, a graduate of UK and a nationally-known chemist, returned to his alma mater as professor of chemistry. He persuaded 14 of his fellow faculty members and UK graduates to establish an alumni club, organizing the first group of alumni with the purpose of joining together in support of the university. The first alumni home was a private residence on Coldstream Farm off Newtown Pike. The residence was converted into an alumni/faculty club and named the Carnahan House for James W. Carnahan, a prominent alumnus and benefactor of the university who paid for much of the remodeling. Seven years later, UK acquired Spindletop Hall, a grand mansion located on Iron Works Pike, and it replaced Carnahan House as an alumni gathering point. For many years, the staff of the UK Alumni Association had offices in the UK Student Center. By 1960, the facility was suffering considerable growing pains and a need for new quarters for the association was recognized. Under the direction of Catherine C. Adams and
viii
Dr. Ralph J. Angelucci, a Century Fund drive was launched and raised $325,000 for the construction of an office and meeting complex at the corner of Rose Street and Euclid Avenue. In October 1963, the Helen G. King Alumni House opened to provide staff offices, event and meeting space for as many as 150 people, and two guest suites. The house was named for Helen G. King, the first permanent director of the UK Alumni Association and a native of Lexington. A 1925 graduate of the UK School of Journalism, King went to work for the university a few years after graduation and stayed for 40 years. She was known as “Miss University of Kentucky” to thousands of alumni. The UK Alumni Association was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation in 1933 and became a member dues-supported and governed association in 1971 when the Office of Development (now Philanthropy) was established for the purpose of receiving gifts to the university. The association was governed by a board of directors.
The inaugural year of the UK Alumni Association Alumni Ambassador program was 2018. Alumni Ambassadors are the official student hosts of the University of Kentucky. The cumulative group helps promote UK at university and alumni association events and assists in strengthening students’ roles within the university. The mission of the group is to provide an overall campus involvement experience for student leaders engaged in the university. This program is a partnership with the Office of the President and the UK Alumni Association to showcase the best and the brightest University of Kentucky’s students.
The University of Kentucky Alumni Association exists to celebrate Wildcat spirit, preserve honored traditions and serve all alumni, friends and students of UK. It strives to keep alumni connected to their alma mater through communications, events, programs and the UK Alumni Club network. The UK Alumni Association was instrumental in helping with the complex financial arrangements leading to the construction of the William T. Young Library. The association gave officials the keys to the library on April 3, 1998.
On July 1, 2019, the UK Alumni Association adopted a new membership model to allow the association to better serve all generations of Wildcats. Under the new model, all UK alumni are recognized as members of the UK Alumni Association and have access to a basic tier of benefits. Those who choose to give $75 or more to any UK fund become Active Members and receive an enhanced tier of Perks & Exclusives. The UK Alumni Association Life Membership program remains intact and these most loyal alumni receive the highest tier of benefits.
Every five years the University of Kentucky Alumni Association recognizes a select group of outstanding alumni and honors them by inducting them into its Hall of Distinguished Alumni. The initial induction ceremony corresponded with the university’s centennial year ceremonies in 1965. In more recent history, the UK Alumni Association unveiled a Wildcat sculpture and celebrated the opening of Wildcat Alumni Plaza during Alumni Weekend on April 20, 2012. Bowman, the sculpture, was named by UK students after John Bowman, the visionary whose determination and perseverance assured the creation and future of the University of Kentucky.
The UK Alumni Association is honored to serve as a connection point for alumni across the country and continue to play an important role in making Big Blue Nation stronger than ever.

Keeping with
Traditions
Wildcats Nickname The official nickname for the University of Kentucky’s athletics teams is “Wildcats.” The nickname became synonymous with UK shortly after a 6-2 football victory over Illinois on Oct. 9, 1909, on the road. Commandant Carbusier, then head of the military department at old State University, told a group of students in a chapel service following the game that the Kentucky football team had “fought like Wildcats.” Later the name Wildcats became more and more popular among UK followers, as well as with members of the media. As a result, the nickname was adopted by the university.
Wildcat Mascot The Wildcat mascot originated during the 1976-77 academic year at UK. Gary Tanner was the original Wildcat, dancing and entertaining thousands of UK fans at Commonwealth Stadium and Rupp Arena during athletics events. Today, the Wildcat mascot also attends several academic functions, as well and generally serves as a friendly ambassador for the university.
Blue and White The University of Kentucky adopted blue and white as its official colors in 1892. Originally, however, UK students had decided on blue and light yellow prior to the Kentucky-Centre College football game on December 19, 1891. The shade of blue, which is close to a royal blue, was chosen when a student asked the question, “What color blue?” At the time, Richard C. Stoll (who lettered in football at UK in 1889-1894) pulled off his necktie and held it up. The students then adopted that particular shade of blue. A year later, UK students officially dropped the light yellow color for white.
Wildcat Alumni Plaza Have you met Bowman? He is the intricately detailed bronze Wildcat sculpture who is the centerpiece of Wildcat Alumni Plaza and represents the dignity, strength and vigilance in which the University of Kentucky family takes great pride. The sculpture serves as a symbol of the University of Kentucky and a touchstone that inspires a sentimental connection among present and future alumni to their alma mater. The plaza, a gift from the UK Alumni Association, is located off Avenue of Champions directly across from Memorial Coliseum and gives alumni, students and friends an opportunity to become part of the Tradition of Legacy through the purchase of personalized brick pavers to support the future of the University of Kentucky, while commemorating its rich history.

Songs
On, On U Of K On, on, U of K, we are right for the fight today, Hold that ball and hit that line; Ev’ry Wildcat star will shine; We’ll fight, fight, fight, for the blue and white As we roll to that goal, Varsity, And we’ll kick, pass and run, ‘til the battle is won, And we’ll bring home the victory.
My Old Kentucky Home The sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home, ‘Tis summer, the time to be gay; The corn-top’s ripe and the meadow’s in the bloom, While the birds make music all the day The young folks roll on the little cabin floor, All merry, all happy and bright; By’n by hard times come a-knocking at the door, Then my old Kentucky home, good night! (CHORUS) Weep no more my lady, Oh! Weep no more today! We will sing one song for my old Kentucky home, For my old Kentucky home, far away.
UK Alma Mater Hail Kentucky, Alma Mater! Loyal sons and daughters sing; Sound her praise with voice united; To the breeze her colors fling. To the blue and white be true; Badge triumphant age on age; Blue, the sky that o’er us bends; White, Kentucky’s stainless page.

Kentucky baseball moved into a new home for the 2019 season, opening the $49 million Kentucky Proud Park, a 21st century facility immediately considered one of the top facilities in all of college baseball. The stadium features permanent seating for nearly 2,500 fans with additional space on grass berms to accommodate 5,000 fans for regular season games. The name Kentucky Proud Park is a tribute to farmers and businesses of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the Big Blue Nation.
A new mixed-use space for learning, innovation and collaboration called The Cornerstone opened to the Lexington and University of Kentucky community in 2020. The ground floor consists of 23,000 square feet of mixed-use space including a gamers’ lounge, three console gaming areas, and a multiuse 100seat theater. The Cornerstone Exchange food hall includes seven retail stalls, and The Cornerstone Garage provides 900 new parking spaces to the north side of campus. An iconic multi-story exterior media wall enhances the university’s smart-campus efforts and provides messaging important to the UK campus and The Cornerstone.
In 2017, UK formally dedicated Lewis Hall, a living learning community and residence hall housing Lewis Honors College students. The facility is named in honor of UK alumnus Thomas W. Lewis and his wife, Jan, who gave $23 million to create one of the country’s leading honors programs. Located at the corner of University and Hilltop Drives, Lewis Hall is a five-story, 346-bed and LEED-silver certified student housing facility.
