These next four(ish) years of your life are full of potential and possibilities. You’ll take interesting classes (you can take badminton for credit, true story), meet new people and experience things that you’ll remember for the rest of your life. UK is a huge school, yes, but there are ways to find your niche and make it feel smaller — while it may not be exactly like “Pitch Perfect” or vlogs on YouTube, it’ll hopefully be a great home for you. As an incoming freshman, you may feel intimidated by the transition from high school to college life, but fret not — you have a huge community of fellow Wildcats to help you feel right at home and make this process as easy and enjoyable as possible.
Welcome to the University of Kentucky
KERNEL MEDIA | 5
Go Cats, and go you!
Take a second and give yourself a pat on the back — you survived the stress of application season, are past the horror of stan dardized tests with three letter names and have been accepted to the Big Blue Nation of the University of Kentucky. And now look at you, moving in and starting your college journey!
Editor-in-Chief of Kentucky Kernel
Class of 2026, we are so proud of you! We’re cheering you on and can’t wait to see what you do. We have no doubt that you are going to accomplish big things here, so just relax, go to class, do your homework and have fun!
And remember, Wildcat: you have a whole community of people who are here for you whenever you’re feeling alone or con fused. You will undoubtedly face many ups and downs during your time here, but the important thing to remember is that there will always be someone who has gone through the same thing and is there to offer you advice or just a shoulder to cry on. This campus is full of professors, counselors, advisors, mentors and friends who would love to help you, cry/laugh with you or just be a listening ear. (And hey, shameless self-plug, the Kernel and KRNL are great places to meet those people!)
You did it! You’re here!
The biggest piece of advice we can offer is to not be afraid to put yourself out there as early as you possibly can. Find a club or an organization that you’re interested in and reach out to see how you can get involved, or find someone sitting alone at The 90 and ask if they would like a buddy to eat with, because who knows? That person might just be your new best friend. College can be a time of discovery, of reinventing yourself, and that is a wonderful thing. You’ll have your share of successes and failures, but the most important thing is to keep going, find those people you can rely on and make the most of your time here. These four years look different for everyone, but we hope your experience is full of wonderful memories and les sons that you’ll carry with you throughout college and beyond.

Purchasing information is available at ukathletics.com/ticketing/student-ticket-2223information.
UK has five free-to-ride bus routes. The main routes that travel throughout campus are the Blue Route and the White Route, which operate Monday–Friday, and the Yellow Route, which operates on weekends. All buses can be tracked through the TransLoc app. UK students can also ride all LexTran buses free with a valid student ID. For more information on campus buses, visit uky.edu/transpor tation/bus/campusshuttles.
Flex dollars are additional funds that can be added to student meal plans and spent at both campus dining halls and on-campus restaurants and markets, such as Subway and Panda Express in the Gatton Student Center and the Wildcat Pantry on central and north campuses. Flex Dollar funds roll over from semester to semester, but not year to year. Students with K permits must move their cars by 3:30 p.m. the day before home football games. Because of this, students with K permits can also park in employee intermediate lots after 3:30 p.m. These areas include the University Drive, Cornerstone and Press Avenue parking garages, as well as surface lots around Scott Street, Memorial Coliseum, Sports Center Drive, Columbia Avenue and Kroger Field. For a full list, visit uky.edu/transportation/park/employeepermits/intermediate.
Where can I park on campus?
How do the UK buses work?
What are Flex dollars?
On-campus residents can purchase residential (R), periphery (K) and remote (X) permits at uky.edu/transportation/park/student permits, allowing them to park at various locations on and off campus. Off-campus students can purchase K, commuter (C) and off-peak (O) permits.
Advising appointments can be made through myUK. After logging in to your account, click “Degree Planning and Registration” under the Student Services tab. Advisors assigned to you should be listed on the right side of the page. Click the blue “Make Ap pointment” button under their name, and you should be taken to a page where you can select a date, time and modality for your appointment. A 24-hour notice is required to schedule Zoom appointments.
hen transitioning to college, especially at a campus as large as UK, it’s easy for the process to be overwhelming. This list addresses some of the most common logistical concerns incoming students have. Hopefully, it will make your transition easier and better allow you to take advantage of everything UK has to offer.

If you are anything like me, then you already know the importance of planning. If you don’t do a lot of planning, maybe it is a habit you can pick up. Whether you prefer digital planning via tablet or laptop, or you’re a pencil and paper kind of person, planning will undoubtedly make you feel more prepared and optimistic about your workload. Find a planner that has monthly, weekly and daily layouts so that you can plan as loosely or tightly as you would like. Decide what days and times you will do which assignments, and you will feel so much better prepared.
With a new semester upon us, it is no secret that stress and anxiety have already affected many of us. Whether you’re stressed about classes, work, relationships or anything in between, we have your back. I wanted to share with you my top five tips and tricks for starting the semester strong. Let’s get into it!

This can mean anything you want it to! You can choose to get involved with on-campus organizations, on- or off-campus jobs, Greek Life and so much more. The campus life here at UK creates endless possibilities of how you can get involved. Regardless of what type of involvement you’re interested in, getting involved is sure to make you feel like you belong and are a part of something new during your freshman year.

#4 MAKE TIME FOR THINGS
YOURSELFTREAT
Personally, I can go a little heavy on this tip. I convince myself that I need a treat after doing the most minor tasks, but that’s okay! We are all working hard and the start of the new semester definitely calls for treating yourself, even if that just means splurging on a venti drink at Starbucks.
When you are juggling multiple courses with everything else in life, it can be super overwhelming to find the time to complete all of your required course readings. Because of this, I like to set a specific time to dedicate to each chapter that I need to read and take notes on. If you make a reading schedule, you will stay on top of your work and learn more while you’re at it. THAT MAKE YOU HAPPY

#3MAKE A SCHEDULEREADINGSET
When a new semester begins, it is so easy to drown in work and forget to make time for the things that make you happy. Whether this means creating art, spending time with friends, exercising or anything in between, we encourage you to schedule out some time for your selves to do the things you love.

Caturday Musts
Learn the Chants Attend a Tailgate by Emma Reilly Photos by Jack Weaver UK
20 | FALL 2022 INSIDE
Between the gates at Kroger Field opening, the shouts of “first down, Kentucky!” and the uproarious touchdown celebrations, Saturdays in the fall on the University of Ken tucky’s campus (or “Caturdays”) provide one of the biggest, most exciting chances to make friends and show your Wildcat pride. Celebrated from State Street to Limestone, Caturdays happen on the weekends when there is a home football game. Here are some ways to get involved and make the most of your Caturday: Whether kickoff is at noon or 9 p.m., the celebrations will start early in the morning all around campus. Get together with some of your friends (or make some new ones along the way) and find a tailgate outside Kroger Field to spend some time with some of the most enthusiastic fans you’ll ever meet. You can also attend the Chevy Cat Walk a few hours before the game begins to cheer on our coaches and players arriving at Kroger Field as they walk through crowds of UK students and fans. Between “My Old Kentucky Home” and “On, On, U of K” (UK’s fight song), there are plenty of lyrics you can learn to prepare for your first game day. Even if it takes a bit of practice, joining the crowd of over 60,000 other fans singing to help the Wildcats bring home the victory is a feeling you’ll never forget.
In the never-ending sea of Kentucky fans at Kroger Field, you’ll find everyone rocking their best blue, white and black gear (and maybe even a few banana suits). Grab some face tattoos, lipstick, hats, sun glasses, pom-poms and your best UK attire to fit in with the crowd or stand out on the jumbotron. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of Caturdays, but it’s important to keep in mind regulations at Kroger Field regarding game day safety and ticket sales. UK Athletics has a clear bag policy for all UK home games, which means that fans are permitted to carry one large clear bag — either a one-gallon Ziploc-style bag or a 12 inch by 6 inch by 12 inch clear bag—and a wallet or small clutch that does not exceed 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches. As of fall 2020, UK Athletics has fully transitioned to mobile ticketing at all venues. Stu dents can visit UKStudentTix.com to purchase single-game tickets as well as season passes.
Dress Your Best Get Excited Some Things to Remember KERNEL MEDIA | 21
Ultimately, Caturdays should be some of the most fun and memorable experiences you’ll have during your time at UK. From the tail gates to the Cat Walk and the high-intensity games themselves, there are plenty of ways to fill your day with friends, fun and football to help relieve some of the stress that can come with college. So, enjoy the ride and GO CATS!
Open 24 hours, Tally-Ho is an iconic American restaurant that has been a post-basketball game tradition for UK students since 1971. This diner hosts a wide variety on its menu, from breakfast foods to cheeseburgers and shakes with a wide vari ety of flavors. The interior is decorated with photographs from decades prior, glowing neon signs and vintage arcade games, which give Tolly-Ho a feeling of nostalgia that takes you back to its beginnings over 50 years ago. On the corner of South Broadway and Bolivar streets, it is about a five-minute walk from campus and a must-try for every Wildcat. by Lauren Ford

There is a wide range of restaurants in the Lexington food scene, from bold Korean to flavorful Italian and classic American cuisine. The University of Kentucky is near several city and statewide favorites, and many are within walking distance from its residence halls. Whether you are craving fresh-made chips and queso to share with friends or need a midnight pick-me-up shake to take a break from study ing, you can be sure that there is something to satisfy your taste right around the corner.
CAMPUS PL A CES
Local Taco has been a staple for college students since 2011, featuring house-made specialty tacos as well as fresh queso and salsa. They are located on South Limestone, almost directly opposite Boyd Hall. With tacos like the Southern Fried — a mix ture of lettuce, tomatoes, crispy golden chicken and honey-lime mayo to top it off — and the Spicy Shrimp Taco, which is filled with buttermilk-battered shrimp and jalapeno slaw, their menu has something for everyone. When you are searching for a classic college favorite food, look no further than Joe Bologna’s. Serving up Italian since 1973, this pizza parlor is housed in a former synagogue on Maxwell Street, just a five-minute walk from UK’s North Campus. With beautiful stained-glass windows, famous garlic breadsticks and a wide menu — including subs, pasta and, of course, pizza — Joe Bologna’s is a historic and essential Lexington locale.
Also located on South Limestone, Han Woo Ri has been serv ing the Lexington area authentic Korean meals since 2006. A favorite for many students, Han Woo Ri offers a variety of meals on their menu, from hearty, warm entrees like Pa Jun — a light ly-fried seafood and scallion pancake—and classic chicken stir fry to handmade dumplings and specialty sushi rolls. Sharing a building with sQecial Media and The Album, you can explore local shops in the area as well.

“Don’t be afraid to be challenged in college. These years are very formative, and you’ll be presented with a lot of ideas, not all of which you’ll agree with. But that’s okay! College should be a safe space where all opinions are able to be expressed in a healthy and mutually respectful way. While you may not change your own personal views over these next four-ish years, you’ll gain an understanding of and appreciation for others’, and you’ll also better be able to defend why you believe what you do. Also, from someone who learned this the hard way, make sure your backpack is waterproof!”
“Google Calendar is a lifesaver. I discovered how helpful it is my sophomore year of college, and I’ll never look back. I used to write everything out, which is excellent and satisfying, but I have 800 different things to remember and follow up with, so it’s nice to type it on your phone. You can easily share organization calendars—KRNL uses it for deadlines, meetings, etc. REALLY helpful!”
“I wish I knew my study technique before starting, which is to take notes, rewrite them three times and then try to write what I know from memory. Explaining subjects to people helps too. Whether you study better alone, with a group, in silence, while listening to music, etc., figure out what works for you and stick to it. Set aside time and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.”
“Get involved in clubs that interest you early! I never would have earned leadership roles in most of my clubs if I hadn’t gotten experience early as a freshman.”
“Find a community on campus that you share interests or passions with early on during your first year. I'm so glad I found KRNL my first semester because it gave me the opportunity to explore my love for writing and magazine production, so definitely go out there and find a club or organization on campus to be a part of!”
Emma Reilly | Assistant Lifestyle Editor, KRNL L+F
“There’s no one UK. You get advertised one image, and you see one image on TV, but really it’s whatever you want. There’s good parts and bad parts. I’ve been frustrated by this institution frequently, but I’ve also met my best friends here. If you can make it work for you, I encourage you to do that.”
