With football season well underway in the Commonwealth, fans have likely been working on their game day wardrobes. Many people will be wearing Kentucky blue dresses or UK polo shirts on game days. Girls often match their dresses with a pair of cowgirl boots. College game day attire varies all over the nation, but it is a Southern trend for college students to dress up

in their best school-themed attire. Southerners take pride in many things, and college football is certainly one of them. “We respect that this is an event,” sophomore Nora Danahy said. “We want to show off our school pride, and we want the teams to know that we take this seriously and support our student-athletes.” Sophomore Cam Brown said he usually wears a UK polo and a pair of khakis to the football games. He said he dresses this way “to show [his] support and because it looks nice.” As the trend for dressy “Caturday” attire has increased, area boutiques have taken notice. Bluetique, Figleaf and Rose and Lime are a few of the local boutiques who carry clothes catered toward women looking for that specific blue attire. Not all fans treat game days like a formal event, however. For those fans, Shop Local Kentucky has game day attire that is a little
more casual. Shop Local Kentucky and self-titled “Chief Kentuckian” Rick Paynter said trends for game day attire change from year to year. “We try to cater to emerging casual trends,” he said. Paynter said he and the business, which is co-owned by his wife, communicated with customers through social media. The shop has a “crazy customer” following of more than 300,000 people across Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter, Paynter said. Paynter said everything in the shop is made in North America and finished by Kentuckians at the Lexington warehouse. “We are Kentucky’s homegrown apparel company,” Paynter said. Shop Local Kentucky’s location on Woodland Avenue is convenient for UK Football fans attending games at Kroger Field, though Paynter said about 90 percent of sales come from online.
UK was recently named a Diversity Champion campus by INSIGHT Into Diversity Magazine, distinguishing it as one of only 15 campuses nationwide to receive the honor. “It is an honor to be chosen by INSIGHT Into Diversity as a Diversity Champion,” said Sonja Feist-Price, UK’s vice president for Institutional Diversity. She said this honor was evidence of how hard every Wildcat works to make the campus diverse and welcoming. “When everyone contributes, everyone benefits,” Feist-Price said. “A more diverse campus makes us a stronger campus. It makes us a stronger community.” Feist-Price said that all UK students will be entering a world with a global economy and interdependent cities, states and countries. Understanding different backgrounds while in college prepares students to enter that “diverse world,” she said. “Preparing students for a multifaceted world requires that an institution shows that they value the history, cultures, beliefs and views of the different students that attend the University,” said Hadeel Abdallah, adviser for the Muslim Student Association Midwest Conference. Abdallah, a UK political science and Arabic and Islamic studies junior, is also the Director of Inclusion and Outreach for the Student Government Association. “I most definitely believe that the University of Kentucky is doing its best in trying to move forward to make
every student feel welcome, and I look forward to seeing those initiatives implemented,” Abdallah said. “We recognize the efforts being taken by Upper Administration and SGA to ensure the University of Kentucky is a place that welcomes diversity and inclusion,” Black Student Union President David Sims said. “This goes for all students expressing diversity of thought, cultural experience and personal beliefs.” Sims also feels that UK must look ahead and continue to focus on improving its diversity. “Diversity in the classroom has fallen behind, specifically with regards to our faculty members,” he said. “Students of color can go all four years at UK and only have the opportunity to be taught by a professor of color a handful of times.” Sims said he feels that a
faculty body lacking diversity hinders a diverse student body. “Diversity gives us an unbelievable opportunity to learn and grow as a community,” he said. “However, when our professors all fall within the same category on the diversity spectrum, failing to represent the wide variety of diverse cultures, experiences and beliefs we see from our student body, this hinders the opportunity to learn and grow offered through diversity.” INSIGHT Into Diversity is the longest-standing diversity publication, leading other magazines in recognizing diverse college campuses. It focuses on modern and relevant information on successful programs that can increase diversity in post-secondary education. To read more, visit www.insightintodiversity.com.

PHOTO BY ARDEN BARNES I STAFF Husband and wife, Dan and Mary John O’Hair, are both deans at the University of Kentucky. They will both be leaving their posts as deans after 9 years at UK.
Dean-duo takes next step together in their careers
By Rick Childress news@kykernel.com
Husband and wife deanduo, Dan and Mary John O’Hair, came to UK together and now they’re stepping down together. Dan is the Dean of the College of Communications and Information and Mary John is the Dean of the College of Education. Both announced last month that after nine years as deans, they will leave their positions in August 2018. “We think it’s very rare,” Mary John said. “We don’t know of any other research, land-grant universities that have spouses as deans.” “We’ve heard the national average for how long a dean stays in office is somewhere between four and

five years,” Dan said. “And we kind of wonder if maybe we lengthened that because we had each other to be supportive of.” The O’Hairs said they are stepping down because they want to pursue their passions as teachers and researchers in their respective colleges. “We decided that if we

came here together, we would probably leave together as deans, but we have no intention of leaving as faculty,” Mary John said. “That’s too important to us.” Both husband and wife said they are excited to be teaching and researching full-time. Mary John is especially excited about the relationships she’ll be able to form as a full-time professor. “You can do lots of great work as an administrator and a dean,” Mary John said. “But at times you miss out on some of the really close connections with students and faculty.” While also missing teaching, Dan is excited about possibly resuming his past research, in which he
studied hurricane warning systems. “I think I want to go back to that because—there’s been a lot of hurricanes,” Dan said. “And there’s been a lot of new graphics and messaging that the National Hurricane Center has developed since whenever I was studying. So I think it’s time for someone—maybe like myself—to take a look at how effective those messages were maybe during Irma and Harvey.” During their tenure as deans, both said they had left a good legacy for their colleges. Dan said the College of Communication and Information has doubled the size of its budget, number of students and amount of faculty. The college has
also created several new majors, including the information-communication technology degree. Mary John said the College of Education has created several new entities that can promote improved education practices, both nationally and internationally. The College of Education also partnered with 17 eastern Kentucky school districts and secured $30 million in funding for those districts. The college provides support for leaders and teachers in those districts. The O’Hairs said their marriage has made them better deans. “I know we both have relied on each other,” Mary John said. “And it’s always good to bounce ideas off someone that you know will tell you straight up, ‘That’s crazy! Don’t do that!’ or say ‘Wow! Wish I would’ve thought of that.’” “We call it commiserating,” Dan said, of when the couple goes home and shares the tough parts of their days. Before UK, the O’Hairs were faculty at the University of Oklahoma but were drawn to Lexington by the persistence of a UK dean search committee. At first, the committee was only pursuing Dan, but he had already turned down two UK offers. While at a football game in Kansas City, Dan received a phone call from one of the chairs of the UK search committee. “He goes, ‘Dan, I’m trying one more time,’” Dan said. “And did you know that the Dean of Education job is open too?’ The reason why that was interesting to both of us is that my wife was a professor of education at Oklahoma. So there were two dean jobs open simultaneously.” Dan hung up the phone and told Mary John the good news. “He said, ‘Guess what— there’s also one in educa-
tion,’” Mary John said. She was delighted. “She goes, ‘Oh my god, that would be so much fun to be deans together,’” Dan said. “One thing led to another and here we were.” So, the O’Hairs began the interview process, loved the school and decided to

DAN O’HAIR begin their deanships together at UK. “I just fell in love with our students and the faculty,” Mary John said. “And Lexington on top of everything else is just a great place to be.” Their children soon followed them. Their daughter became a school teacher in the Lexington area and their son completed his undergrad at UK. Their daughter and her husband soon announced that they would be having a child. “Now, we’re grandparents with our first Kentuckian born here,” Mary John said. “They’ll be expecting another in March.” Dan said the yearlong search process for new deans will begin soon and that it’s very possible that, for next year, the colleges will receive interim deans. “I did enjoy being a dean,” Dan said. “It was a lot of fun. It was the right level of challenge for me at the time. But I think it ran its course and I’m about ready to get back to the other things that I love.”

Kneeling is a form of free speech protected by the First Amendment
A lot of buzz on social media and news stations the past few weeks over a line of protests by NFL players has entered the public eye. This started with Colin Kaepernick taking a knee during the national anthem at football games late last year. Now, you can read everyone’s opinion about the situation by searching “#TakeAKnee” on every major social media platform. The NFL quarterback claimed that he was protesting against an unjust system. After his first protest on live TV, the press asked Kaepernick why he chose to kneel for the anthem. He responded with, “People don’t realize what’s really going on in this country. There are a lot of things that are going on that are unjust. People aren’t being held accountable for. And that’s something that needs to change.” Kaepernick received tons of backlash from this last year including fans burning his jersey, fans destroying season passes and tickets to his games and huge amounts of uproar on social media. People were– and still are– absolutely furious that this man refused to stand for the national anthem. Protests continued into this year and on Sept. 24, President Trump used his Twitter account to condemn these players by saying, “Sports fans should never condone players that do not stand proud for their National Anthem or their Country. NFL should change policy!” This sparked a response from the players of the NFL. Since that comment, many more NFL players have started to kneel. Players on the Miami Dolphins, New Orleans Saints and Detroit Lions are taking a knee in spite of the president’s comment. This has caused even more backlash toward the players mostly from conservative demographics. People are furious because they believe these players are disrespecting our country and the people that have fought for it. But when did it become mandatory to stand for the national anthem? These players are not breaking any rules. The

NFL has no mandates against kneeling. The NFL game operation manual clearly states that players must be on the sidelines for the anthem but it says specifically that they “should” stand at attention. This implies that it is optional in stark contrast to its language regarding where they “must” be when the anthem is playing. So if they aren’t breaking any rules, then why do so many people care? Trump states that they are disrespecting our country and the people that have fought for it, but are they? If anything, it is patriotic to stand up, or kneel in this case, against injustice in one’s country. If anything, wanting one’s country to be better and fighting for that vision is one of the most patriotic things anyone can do. Those soldiers that people are claiming that they are disrespecting fought for our right to sit or stand. They fought for freedom and the Constitution, which clearly states that we have the right to peacefully protest and practice free speech. So, this choice honors those who have died for our freedom to exercise the very right that they were
fighting for. These players are not protesting soldiers anyway. They are protesting the unfair treatment of minorities in our country. Rosa Parks wasn’t protesting the transportation system when she decided to sit in the front of a public bus in Montgomery, Alabama all those years ago; she was protesting segregation. So why is this any different? Protesting in the past has lead to social change not only in America but around the world, so why do people including our president feel the need to oppose it and cast a negative light upon it? These players are kneeling with a goal in mind. They want to make change and they are using one of the biggest platforms in America to do so. Kaepernick himself even said when starting this movement that, “When this country is representing people the way that it’s supposed to, I’ll stand.” So, why not aid in fixing this country’s socio-economic issues instead of attacking these players who only want what is best for our nation? The tragedy in Las Vegas last Sunday marks the 273rd mass shooting in the United States since the beginning of 2017, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive. Today is the 282nd day of the year, meaning that there is a mass shooting in the U.S. almost once a day. The United States has a gun crisis, and so far, there has been little to no legislative action to abate the onslaught of gun violence experienced in America. In the week leading up to the mass shooting in Las Vegas, there were six other mass shootings. What is a mass shooting exactly? A mass shooting is when a gun is used in a mass killing, which Congress defined as three or more killings. While that may not sound like too many, in 1,735 days, there have been 1,719 deaths and 6,510 injuries related to mass shootings in the country, according to the same data from the Gun Violence Archive. The question that many are asking is where are the laws prohibiting this kind of violence from happening? Essentially, there are none. The mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary rocked the nation in 2012 and caused an outcry for legislation that would help decrease gun violence and enforce heavier restrictions on firearms. According to CBS News, by 2016, more than 100 gun control proposals were brought to Congress and not a single one of them passed. Much of this can be attributed to heavy lobbying by pro-gun groups, such as the National Rifle

Association. In 2016 alone, groups spent over $10.5 million on pro-gun lobbying, according to opensecrets.org. Since the shooting in Newtown five years ago, there have been over 1,500 mass shootings around the country. With the current presidential administration and heavy lobbying from pro-gun rights groups like the National Rifle Association, there seems to be little to no hope of passing any significant gun legislation. Gun violence in America is not something that can be ignored any longer. The tragedy that unfolded in Las Vegas should be a wake-up call for all Americans, pro-gun rights or not. The United States operates within a system where gun laws and regulations have failed the safety and wellbeing of the population, and the nation’s citizens should no longer stand for it. And yet, the United States has yet to take note or considerable action. Gun control would not only reduce the number of mass shootings, but it would
decrease the number of gun-related deaths overall. According to the CDC, firearm suicides make up more deaths than firearm homicides in the U.S., and the New England Journal of Medicine reports that generally states with more access to guns report more suicides per year. After Australia enacted gun control laws in 1996, gun suicides dropped by 74 percent according to Vox. Americans seem to be moving in the opposite direction when it comes to gun control. Since the early 1990s, support for gun ownership has increased according to the Pew Research Center. In the aftermath of the Las Vegas shooting, the NRA has remained silent, a move that is familiar for the organization following any mass shooting. In the week following the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, the NRA made no public statements and even took its Facebook down. However, in the following two months,

Underground UK visits The Cats Den
By Megan Brown
fearures@kykernel.com
OLIVIA BEACH I STAFF The Cats Den is a place for students to hang out, study or attend many of the free events hosted inside of the space.
Finding recreational activities to do on campus and around Lexington on a shoestring budget is no small task. The saying “If it’s free, it’s for me” reigns true with almost every college student who doesn’t want to sacrifice fun simply because of the cost. Not only does The Cats Den Underground offer students a retreat away from the stresses of classes and everyday life with free events, they also provide a hub to play games, try new things and meet people. Besides being a dining hall, the basement of Blazer has a facility where students can play billiards and table tennis while enjoying free popcorn from the snack bar. Students can also participate in any of the 40 events The Cats Den Underground is hosting throughout the semester. With events ranging from DIY pottery, to comedy shows and game nights, the wide variety
allows students to try new things while still being able to participate in some of their hobbies. Additionally, The Cats Den hosts seasonal events to get students spirited for the upcoming holidays. For example, on Oct. 24, they are having a pumpkin carving where students can carve or paint pumpkins in preparation for Halloween and on Nov. 28 students can decorate gingerbread men. There are also recurring events that happen throughout the semester, one of which is the Comedy Cavern. As a part of this program, comedians from well-known shows such as “Last Comic Standing” and “Comedy Knockout” come once a week to entertain students. The comedian is different every week and hilarity is bound to ensue when they leave students laughing all night long. The Cats Den Underground also hosts game tournaments and nights. In October there
were will be a table tennis tournament and a BINGO night. Other popular events such as Trivia Night will return each month as well where students can come in teams or individually. Along with free admission to all of the events, programs usually have prizes and giveaways at almost every event. Some other upcoming events include a magician, concert and rap battle. In addition, there will be more events geared toward art and creativity throughout the semester. The Cats Den Underground is open seven days a week on Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 10 p.m. Instead of staying in your dorm room and missing out, head underground to The Cats Den to enhance your college experience, participate in free stress relieving activities and meet people who could turn out to be lifelong friends.
WRFL extends Queerslang festival to one week
By Odele Liff

WRFL’s Queerslang is back and it’s bigger than before. Unlike previous years, the WRFL event now expands to a full week of festivities. This year’s events begin Monday, Oct. 9, and end with a rowdy concert Saturday, Oct. 14. The event takes place annually to celebrate the Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Trans, Queer and Allyship community, and not only aims to educate and raise awareness of LGBTQ issues within the community, but for all who attend the
week. Queerslang has a diverse array of events for the week, beginning Monday at the Bowman’s Den walkway, from 1-3 p.m. Students can find and talk with University of Kentucky organizations. Tuesday will have events and workshops by the GLSEN, and other groups will be represented as well. On Wednesday evening, Lizzie Bordens’ film, Born in Flames, will be screening at 21c in Downtown Lexington. The film is of the Feminist Sci-FI genre and it comments on racism, sexism, as well as heterosexism and classism.
Thursday includes a panel discussion with Mayer Gray and Assistant Provost Hollingsworth. WRFL has even included a link in which you can submit your own questions for the panel. Friday will include a walking tour of Downtown, and afterward a concert will be held at the UK Art Museum. Saturday will bring the festival to a close with Queerslang’s last event involving Drag Shows and a concert with headliner Trixie Mattel. WRFL has a Facebook event page, and more information on the event can be found at http://wrfl.fm.

Makeup does not have to break the bank

“Darling, can you hand me that powder brush?” the mother asks from her high heels as her fascinated daughter watches admiringly. The little girl raises herself to her toes and runs her fingers over the ceramic handles, powder compacts and glass bottles splayed across her mother’s vanity before landing on the biggest and fluffiest. She hands it to her mother, receives a loving “thank you” and continues to watch her mother transform herself. Many little girls are introduced to the beauty world through their mothers. We begin mirroring from the time we are toddlers, and we grow up wanting to be just like them. Watching our mothers prepare for a night out with red lipstick or slide on eyeliner before work seemed monotonous during childhood, but there always comes a day where it begins to spark interest. I remember walking up and down
the aisles of Ulta Beauty as a little girl, trailing behind my mother as she searched for her nude lip liner. I would rub the glitter testers on my arms and spray everything in sight all over my pore-less skin. Of course, the time when makeup is the least necessary is the time when it becomes the most intriguing. “But mom! All my friends are wearing it!” Clear mascara was one of my first staples. I would swipe it onto my lashes in the morning, even though there was a no-makeup policy at my Catholic school, and feel like I was ready to take on anything sixth grade could throw at me. At the time, it was the only makeup product my mother allowed me to wear. I was completely unaware of the entire world of beauty that would demand my attention in the following years. Soon came the interest in eye shadow. Then bronzer, lip gloss, highlighter, the whole nine yards. I had no reason to wear it and nowhere to be, but I would walk up and down makeup aisles for hours, wandering aimlessly until I found that perfect shade. But once I started trying things out and comparing different brands, I noticed a steep
price difference between products that seemed quite similar. Makeup, like clothing, shoes and all things lovely, varies incredibly in price. High-end makeup brands charge up to hundreds of dollars for a single makeup product, but brands from the drugstore can offer prod-
Soon came the interest in eye shadow. Then bronzer, lip gloss, highlighter, the whole nine yards. I had no reason to wear it and nowhere to be... ucts under $5. Sometimes, a $10 bronzer can be just as pigmented and buttery as a $40 one, but how is a girl supposed to know when this is the case? Trial and error, and also YouTube. First-year ISC major Lily Oels, like many other girls her age, dis-
covered the makeup side of YouTube and has tried out some products because of it. “I love Jaclyn Hill. She’s the only YouTuber I’ve watched, but I’ve tried some of her suggestions,” Oels said. Jaclyn Hill, one of the most adored YouTubers with over 4.4 million loving subscribers, is a professional makeup artist who shares her favorite products and tutorials with the internet. Although she does discuss pricey items on her channel quite frequently, she has also made videos in which she lists some of her favorite drugstore products as well. One of these products, the Maybelline Fit Me concealer, comes in at $6.99 as opposed to the highly-raved about Tarte Shape Tape concealer priced at $25. Although the Tarte concealer does offer higher coverage, the Maybelline concealer blends flawlessly and covers up everything you need it to without making you look overdone. Oels listed the Fit Me as her go-to concealer. However, Oels did disclose that her absolute favorite makeup product is her Urban Decay highlighter. A pro-tip for creating a makeup routine without draining your bank account is to save up for a few pric-
ier items that you are absolutely obsessed with and that will last longer and spend a little bit less on products you go through quickly. Some products can even be used in a way that they were not intended to fit your personal demands. Second-year psychology major Noelle Dragon was sitting at her makeup table one day when she discovered an innovative way to repurpose an everyday product. “I needed something to blend out my eyebrows, and I had a spare toothbrush in my bathroom, so I brushed it through my brows, and it worked great,” Dragon said. Anastasia Beverly Hills sells an eyebrow brush for $18, but Dragon found something that works just as well for her for free. Makeup is a form of personal expression, and there isn’t a single path, or budget, required to be successful. Do you want to spend $38 on a stunning highlighter for your cheekbones? Go for it. Would you prefer scanning the aisles of Target for a $3 one instead of getting pressured into a purchase at Sephora? That’s cool, too. If you pick up a toothbrush along the way and can incorporate it into your makeup routine, then make your younger self proud.

When the NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament bracket was released last season, revealing that Kentucky was a four-seed in the Lexington region, the perfect storyline had been written. If the Cats kept winning, they would play all of their tournament games in Lexington until the Final Four, a place UK has never been. They have come close, making it to the Elite Eight in 2013, 2012, 2010 and 1982, but never made it over the hump of making it to a Final Four. Seniors Makayla Epps and Evelyn Akhator made it their goal to take Kentucky to the Final Four in front of Epps’ home-state and Akhator’s second home, but those goals weren’t achieved after the Cats were knocked off in the second round by fifth-seeded Ohio State. The loss was a crushing one for the Cats, as the careers of two UK greats came to an end in a sudden moment. The sting from the loss has since worn off, but the Cats are still tasked with replacing two of the best players in program history from last season. Despite the loss of Epps and Akhator, the Cats still return a lot of talent that played significant roles last season. A mix of experienced returners and talented freshmen make up this year’s team that doesn’t plan on dropping off anytime soon. Taylor Murray, Maci Morris and Alyssa Rice will likely be the leaders and best

players for this year’s team. Murray had a breakout last season alongside Epps, where she averaged 12.2 points per game behind Epps and Akhator. Morris will occupy Murray in the backcourt as arguably the teams best shooter. Rice will be one of three seniors on the roster, and will look to fill-in the role Akhator possessed last year. Makenzie Cann, Jaida Roper, Ogechi Anyagaligbo and Jessica Hardin are all returners from last year’s team who will likely step into a bigger role this season. As for the recruiting class, the Cats added five new players in the offseason, including four freshmen who are at least three-star prospects according to ESPN. The highest rated freshman is Keondra McKinney, a four-star prospect from Knoxville, Tennessee. McKinney averaged a double-double her senior season and led Fulton High School to 27
wins and a state tournament appearance. One of those five new players is Amanda Paschal, who is a junior-college transfer from Gulf Coast State College. In her freshman year, she was a part of the GCSC team that won the National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship. The last time that UK had a player who won the NJCAA national championship was Akhator. The Cats have some major holes to fill with the departures of Epps and Akhator, but head coach Matthew Mitchell has talented players to work with on the roster. With good coaching and good players, the Cats seem set on having another good season.

table. Jarred Vanderbilt is one of the players who claims he’s the best ping-pong player, but he recognizes that he has some competition. “Ping-pong is my game,” Vanderbilt said. “Jemarl (Baker) challenges me, Shai (Gilgeous-Alexander) sometimes depending if it’s a good day or not, Dillon’s (Pulliam) pretty good and Kevin (Knox) is getting a little better, but other than that, nobody. We’re really the only ones that really play.” Since the competition is deeper in ping-pong, Pulliam notices that the games mean a lot since all the players hate losing. “When we’re playing ping pong, we go at it,” Pulliam said. “It’s literally like we’re playing basketball. We all have extremely competitive spirits, we want to win at anything.”
However, both Knox and Washington believe they are the best 2K players on the team. “I’m definitely the best 2K player on the team by far, don’t let anybody else tell you different,” Wash ington said. “Kevin, I already know he said that but I’m better than him.” In terms of ping-pong, the competition pool is a little deeper, as many players consider themselves good enough to compete against anybody on the ping-pong
No matter what the players are doing though, they are always competing against each other and doing whatever they can to avoid defeat. If the players can have that same mindset on the court this season and work collectively as a team, they could be tough to beat.
By Chris Leach sports@kykernel.com
Anytime the UK men’s basketball team steps onto the court for practice or pickup games, the competitive mindset inside them kicks in as they’ll do anything to prevent losing. However, the basketball court isn’t the only location where this competitive mindset is present, as the off-the-court games can get pretty intense also. “I just feel like we’re just a competitive team the whole way around, anything we do we’re just always trying to compete against one another,” freshman guard Hamidou Diallo said. Whenever the Cats aren’t in the Joe Craft Center working on their skills, they can usually be found in the Wildcat Coal Lodge playing either one of two games, NBA 2K or ping-pong. In terms of 2K, players mutually agree that PJ Washington and Kevin Knox are the two best players on the team. Lots of other players often challenge Knox and Washington, but the two freshmen forwards have gapped themselves from the rest of the team. “There’s a lot of kids here that are not good at 2K, but when I play PJ it’s always a close game, coming down to overtime or something like buzzer beater, something like that,” Knox said.
Knox
Vanderbilt
The Cats play other games when not playing basketball, such as pool or card games, but it’s usually 2K and ping-pong that receives the most activity in the Cats’ down time.

NBA Cats give current UK players quality practice time
MEN’S BASKETBALL SEASON 2017-18
By Chase Campbell sports@kykernel.com
Playing basketball at UK has its perks. As the school year began in late August, the men’s basketball team was treated with a visit from the New Orleans Pelicans, an NBA team with four former Wildcats (three of which have been All-Stars) on its roster. The young Cats were looking at model examples of what playing at UK can bring, as they scrimmaged against the likes of All-NBA First Team selection Anthony Davis and NBA champion Rajon Rondo. To play for the Cats means that a young man is already being considered for the NBA before he even proves himself in an NCAA game due to the pedigree that the program carries with it. “I want to get pushed to the max,” forward Kevin Knox said while the Pelicans were in town. “I want to get outside of my comfort zone, that’s something that [head coach John Calipari] and [assistant coach Kenny Payne] are known for doing.”
It was a great opportunity, it was great just to play against pros and compete with them.
JEMARL BAKER At the start of the season, there will be 28 former Cats on 17 NBA rosters, while roughly 10 of them are expected to start regularly in the upcoming NBA season. That number is expected to continue to grow as freshmen like Nick Richards and Hamidou Diallo are already being projected as first-round picks in

the 2018 draft. “It was a great opportunity, it was great just to play against pros and compete with them,” guard Jemarl Baker said. “Pros that you’ve been looking up to your whole life and that’s somewhere that you want to get as a player. Just to be able to play against them is great. It’s a great opportunity.” Aside from the dominant post players, many of the young Cats said that Rondo was actually one of the toughest covers on the court in pickup games. “Rondo’s fast,” Diallo said. “People don’t know how fast he really is, he’s fast and he can defend.”
Surely past the prime in his career, Rondo still dazzled the young Cats. His long wingspan and quick feet were the two most common headaches for the young UK guards who are looking to get to his level. Diallo also went on to say that even though the Pelicans didn’t take it easy, neither did the Cats. They wanted to show that they were just as good or “even better” than the NBA squad. Going up against a total of 11 All-Star appearances, 5 All-NBA selections and a 2008 championship ring from UK alone didn’t daunt this year’s Cats, so it’s unlikely much more this season will.

Diallo’s biggest challenge lies ahead in upcoming season
to pull his name out of the NBA Draft pool. That decision has set up Diallo’s bigHamidou Diallo might gest experience at UK as of only be entering his second yet, which is the upcoming semester at UK, but it feels 2017-2018 season. “I feel like it’s just been like he has already experipractice, practice, practice, enced a lot. out the Cats. He could’ve stayed in the NBA Draft and would’ve likely been selected before the night was over. When it came to decision-making time, Diallo was focused on making one person happy, himself. “It just felt like me coming back was the best decision for me,” Diallo said. “Wasn’t about not being ready or anything like that, it was just, ‘what is the best decision for you to do right now for your career.’” Diallo’s decision wound up making a lot of other people happy, as fans of UK basketball are excited to see what the athletic guard can do. Over the summer competing for Team USA at the U19 FIBA Basketball World Cup, Diallo provided a glimpse of what he’s got to
offer on the court, and it only made fans more excited to see him in a Kentucky jersey. Despite the buzz surrounding Diallo, head coach John Calipari knows that he, and the other freshmen, have a long way to go until they make an impact on this team. “What I’m trying to get these guys to understand is none of them are there yet. And if you think you are, you’re delusional,” Calipari said. Diallo has yet to play in a college basketball game, and has only played in seven games (all at FIBA U19 World Cup) since committing to Kentucky. It will likely take some time for Diallo to shake of the rust of not playing in many competitive basketball games recently. Another challenge that
presents Diallo this season is stepping into the leadership role he seems likely to fill. It’s not often that freshmen are considered leaders on a team, but at a place like Kentucky where players are turning pro left and right, that leaves Diallo as one of the most experienced players on the young roster. “I’ve talked to Hami (Diallo) about that,” Calipari said.” “I said, ‘Man, you can’t go off in your room and put your headphones on. These guys gotta know you are there for them. They gotta know it. They gotta know you’re not just here to do your thing.’” Diallo knows he’s stepping into a leadership role, a role he looks forward to being in. However, the thing that makes being a leader
tough for Diallo is learning communication with all of his players. “Getting to know everyone, getting to know how everyone reacts, getting to know how you respond and talk to every teammate, cause every teammate is different,” Diallo said. “That’s just been the toughest thing but once I got that down pat, everything has been easy now.” Diallo has a lot on his plate for this upcoming season, but the extra semester of experience he got when he enrolled early will help his transition to leading this young team. If Diallo can do what coaches and players say they expect of him, it could be a good season for the athletic guard.

Kernel sports staff predicts what’s to come for 2017-18 season Postseason predictions
Chris Leach
Chase Campbell
Leach Win the SEC Tournament and make it to the Final Four. It’s been two seasons since the Cats have made a Final Four, but that’s destined to end with the talent on UK’s roster. The inexperience will be a challenge, but Calipari always gets his teams ready for March, and this is a talented team. Campbell Lose to Florida in the SEC Tournament, then make the Final Four, where they’ll lose to another top-tier team with far less freshmen. They’ll make it that far because of the surprise of Jarred Vanderbilt. While he’ll be kept off the court for most of the regular season, he should reach peak chemistry with the team around the postseason, while teams haven’t had a whole season to prepare for how he plays.
Regular season record
Season MVP
Chris Leach- Sports Editor 26-5, with their five losses being against Kansas, West Virginia, at home against Florida, at Texas A&M and at Missouri.
Leach Wenyen Gabriel. After making big improvements in the summer, Gabriel is primed to fill the leadership role this team desperately needs. Kentucky has always done well when they have a go-to guy on the court, and I envision Gabriel being that guy for the Cats.
Chase Campbell- Asst. Sports Editor 29-2, with the losses coming from Kansas and West Virginia.

Campbell Quade Green. I was tempted to say Wenyen Gabriel, but he still has a specific role for the Cats. Stretch the floor by bringing big men out into the second and third level of scoring, rebound and take charges. That’s not a role in modern basketball that will get your face on a billboard. Quade, however, is an elite talent that I think will be next in line as the top-tier point guard under Cal.
Surprise player Leach Shai Gilegous-Alexander. Someone has to back up Hamidou Diallo, and Gilgeous-Alexander will provide big minutes off the bench for the Cats. Many former and current UK players have said Gilgeous-Alexander has surprised them in the offseason, and I think he’ll continue doing so in the regular season. Campbell Sacha-Killeya Jones. I’m not even sure if any non-freshman even count as “surprise” players on a team basically comprised of all freshmen. His time overseas has had to help him plenty, and he came into Kentucky as a capable wing defender. Playing in Europe over the summer surely improved his ball movement and ability to score, which will heavily increase his minutes.
Toughest SEC game
Leach Aside from the pair of Florida games, traveling to Missouri will be a big challenge for Kentucky. With the additions of Michael Porter Jr., Jeremiah Tilmon and Jontay Porter, the Tigers will be good this year, and the likely-rowdy crowd will push Mizzou over the Cats. Campbell Provided he remains eligible in the mess that is the uncovering of the college basketball underbelly, I think Collin Sexton and the Alabama Crimson Tide will be a surprising challenge for the Cats. Florida also has to be mentioned, but that’s a game everyone’s got circled coming in. Sexton provides scoring and athleticism to an extremely sound defensive team coached by Avery Johnson, one of the best point guards to ever play for the Spurs.
Toughest non-conference game Leach Kansas. The Cats won’t be anywhere near their full potential in just their third regular season game, and I don’t think they’ll be ready for a Kansas team that returns Devonte’ Graham and added five-star power forward Billy Preston this off season.
Campbell West Virginia. I’m actually thrilled to watch the legion of freshmen take on the “Press Virginia” defensive style. Athleticism can’t break through smart, frustrating defense. They’re going to commit plenty of turnovers, I’m expecting the number to be well into the teens. It’s one I think Cats fans should be glad to watch them lose, because it’ll make the team better.
Number of NBA draft picks Leach Six. Quade Green, Hamidou Diallo, Nick Richards, Kevin Knox, PJ Washington and Wenyen Gabriel. UK has the potential to have more or less, but I think six players get drafted into the NBA in 2018. I think Diallo, Richards, Washington and Gabriel get drafted in the first round. Campbell Six. Green, Hamidou Diallo, Nick Richards, Kevin Knox, PJ Washington and Gabriel will all get drafted this year. It’s really an impressive thing that someone coming off the bench has NBA talent, and I think UK is near the level where their players could do decent battle with a very low-ranking NBA team. Everyone but Gabriel goes in the first round, and both Diallo and Richards make the lottery.

Vanderbilt sidelined, expected to make debut in January By Chase Campbell sports@kykernel.com
MICHAEL REAVES I STAFF
At the end of September, highly touted UK basketball freshman Jarred Vanderbilt suffered a left foot injury that is expected to sideline him until January. He’ll need to undergo surgery, and the consensus Top-20 forward’s absence will be felt by the team. “We’ll miss him on the court,” head coach John Calipari said. “I want what’s best for him and his family, and right now that’s taking care of his injury and making sure he doesn’t have to worry about it again.” With Vanderbilt out through all of non-conference play, the Cats will
We’ll miss him on the court. I want what’s best for him and his family, and right now that’s taking care of his injury and making sure he doesn’t have to worry about it again.
JOHN CALIPARI now have to develop an identity without him. Without him, the Cats lose a long, lanky scoring and re-
bounding option, as well as being less able to take minutes off other players to keep them fresh during a tough game. With a team as young as this year’s Cats, which is expected to be the youngest team Calipari has ever coached, dealing with a player’s absence will be extremely tough. In the four months they’ve spent together, the slew of eighteen- and nineteen-year-olds surely made a plan with Vanderbilt in it. Adjusting to the loss will be difficult for the young players. However, if someone in any position group had to go down, the Cats may count themselves lucky that it was one of the forwards. A little under half of UK’s roster has the ability to play at either the small forward or power forward positions, including Vanderbilt. With big bodies such as Kevin Knox and P.J. Washington still there to put in
extremely significant minutes, the team’s loss of Vanderbilt can be minimized. While the Cats may have a tough time, Vanderbilt will have it even worse once he steps back onto the court. In his absence, UK will have played the likes of Kansas, Louisville, UCLA and West Virginia, gaining experience all the while. Vanderbilt will have no such oncourt experience, jumping in to conference play as the Cats have to battle with Florida, Missouri and Alabama. Vanderbilt can watch film all day, but he’ll likely feel out of sync without the on-court experience that his teammates will have had by that time. Big Blue Nation will just have to hope that this extremely athletic and talented player makes a smooth transition back into the team in January.
