FROM THE EDITOR Greetings, greetings, First and foremost I would like to thank all of our readers and supporters who have joined us in the launching of ShineOn Magazine. I truly believe that our core values and intentions are being received well. We sincerely appreciate all the support and encouragement. As I stated in our inaugural issue of ShineOn, every step we take is planted and rooted in some form of desire. We move in one direction or another because we are on a path towards something we want. Ken Vereen took a step in the form of his desire. He has been moving in the direction of something that he truly wants. He is a visionary and incredible business partner. Ken has set forth a vision not only for our publication, but he has also set forth to build a team that would encourage the enhancement of the lives of all those that we may reach. As a member of his team I am honored to be a part of such a phenomenal mission.
Publisher Ken Vereen, publisher@shineonmag.com
All of us are the people, the community, and the source. Our brains and hearts are activated by actions and emotions. Actions speak a thousand times louder than our words, and emotions determine how we will put those actions into effect. Our vision is to be the type of company that doesn’t just share “words” about support, advancement, and enlightenment. We will be more than just an operational business, or magazine publication. WE are building powerful teams of people who go out into the world and act out the very morals and truths that we believe in. We together will plant seeds of love and wisdom. We will infuse the cities, the countries, the market place and more with empowered individuals who desire to make a difference.
Editor
That’s what we stand for and that is what we will set out to accomplish with your help. Join us as we team up with local, regional, and national charities. We want to give back to our communities, and see them grow. Our communities across the globe need us and we need them. Let’s sow into our future and grow together. There are no limits, no impossibilities. Thank for all of your positi ve energy, it is deeply appreciated. We encourage you to continue with us on our journey of becoming.

Dare Dream Cruise: “U Can do It!” Leaving shore: September 30th, 2013
D
No matter who you are or where your challenges arise EVERYDAY. They come in all sizes, from all angles of life. Some are enormous and some are miniscule, but none the less they certainly exist. Unfortunately, there are some people out there who see the challenge for what it is (or maybe more than what it is) and simply accept it allowing it to control some portion of their life. Then there are those who see it, acknowledge it and take it by the horns! Those people make a decision within themselves to unleash their power over that
challenge and use it as a tool to get them to their next level. They may not know how or when, but their focus is on the fact that hands down they WILL overcome it. That type of assurance is priceless and comes from one undeniable belief which is that in their minds they believe they can DO IT. Period. So what about you? Can you do it? Will you do it? Do you believe? The “U Can Do It,” Dare2Dream cruise is for those who are embarking upon a transformational journey, individuals who
would like to be surrounded and connected to others who are striving towards their next level. Regardless of color, background, or level of success this will be an opportunity to network and gain an immeasurable amount of knowledge and resources. The experience will be comparable to nothing else. It’s time for some new scenery wouldn’t you agree? Aren’t you ready to be around some people who are dreamers just like yourself? It can be difficult at times to find motivation and support within our everyday environments. The very people that we look to for

encouragement sometimes end up being the same ones who poke holes in our dreams watching us as the air deflates and hope dims. Set the date September 30th, 2013 and know that it will be the beginning of a new you. A you that doesn’t remain inactive due to fear or uncertainty, a you that truly sees yourself as a goldmine full of creative ideas and gifts. Come along and be refreshed. Sail the sea with gurus, artists, teachers, supporters and fellow dreamers. Refreshed, you should return home educated, focused, empowered, and centered. We invite you to join us and have some fun, tell us about your dream and the challenges you face and we will make room for you. Also if you want to showcase your talent or perhaps meet someone who can help you get on the right path, this is most certainly for you.

SPREAD THE WORD AND JOIN IN AS WE LAUNCH OUR NEW CAMPAIGN FIRST THINGS FIRST
What is it that you would like to be encouraged in? Struggling with weight loss or getting rid of an addiction? Going after that promotion, starting a business, or maybe finally writing that book? This IS a campaign that is all about growth and progression. Many people can have a dream, but it takes a team to complete that dream. A team that is supportive and nurturing can make all the difference in the world, especially when a person is facing a great challenge. The “T.M.I.C” campaign is being set up as a central force designed to create a connection between those with a dream and those who want to help them achieve it! There will be several goal categories represented within the campaign ranging from weight management, to developing cre-
ative talents, cultivating healthy relationships, and more! The campaign is intended to be very hands on. For further encouragement, there will be hosts for each category that will coach and inspire you on your journey of change. They will host webinars sharing useful information, advice, and ideas. Also as a guest on the Dare2Dream Cruises you will have a chance to sit with them as they host intimate connect groups where you can network and learn from others who are making strides towards goals similar to your own. Participants/Supporters will be asked to visit our T.M.I.C site (www.tellmeican.com) to fill out a contact form telling us a little about yourself and the journey that you are preparing to embark upon. There on the site you will
see a list of categories, simply choose whichever category is most appropriate for you and upload a video no longer than 4 minutes, sharing your brief message about what you would like to accomplish. For each category the videos will be posted and shared with fellow T.M.I.C participants/supporters. Also we will be creating an interactive “Tell Me I Can,” web calendar which could even feature YOU! The videos uploaded previously by participants will be voted on for 2 weeks and the Top 6 from each category will be featured on our calendar representing the month in which they pledged to make a promise for the campaign. Kicking off the campaign will be an online campaign spe-
cializing in Healthy Living/ Weight Management. Join Dare 2 Dream Cruise, A New You 4 Life, and Shine on Magazine in the launching of the “Tell Me I Can” Campaign! Together we are on a mission to uplift spirits and spread encouragement to those who are fighting to take back control of their weight and ultimately their lives. ccording to the National Cancer Institute (NCI), one in eight women who live to be age 80 will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. This makes the disease the second most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women, after skin cancer. (http://www. c a n c e r c e n t e r. com/breast-cancer/breast-cancer-information. cfm) Let’s start with this: Breast cancer is not U N B E ATA B L E . There are a number of stories, some of which may never be told, that are no less than living proof that the summit of that mountain can be reached. There are stories of victory proving that the battle can be won and that a diagnosis is by no means equivalent to the end of a life. Deep beneath it all there is an undeniable source of strength in the souls of the women stricken with this
disease. There lies a beauty that is far beyond skin deep, beneath the hair loss, mastectomies, and chemotherapy fatigue. A light exists within the spirit that shines brighter than all outdoors. Sometimes that light, however, gets hard to see. Breast cancer can mistakenly give the impression that these women have lost the courage because their bodies are unable to portray the true tenacity of their hearts, but that is by no means the truth. With the grace of God all it takes is a moment, that one moment when they realize that after all the pain, changes, and emotional shifting…they have become a SURVIVOR. At that point the ground moves. A realization happens and they know that they have become victorious in the Battle of Life, a feat not easily taken, but most assuredly completed. With all they can manage to muster,

these women can stand up and say “I did it, I have won.” The tears of frustration and sadness then turn into tears of thankfulness and humility. Spouses, friends, and family whose hearts have been on a roller coaster of uncertainty finally have a chance to exhale as they look upon their loved ones with sincere joy. Although they have come to the end of that indescribable journey, their stories of survival should never be forgotten. There is no medal, trophy, or badge of honor that could justly award these women as the true warriors they have become. Still it is possible to give them that special recognition by honoring and acknowledging them for all they have been through, by giving them a day, an entire event even that is solely about them. It would be an honor to make them feel like the shining stars that they truly are. Ms. Judy Williams is the Founder/Creative Director of “Celebration of Life,” an event created especially for breast cancer survivors. Her motivation behind the event was to give them a day to be treated like Queens, a day for them to feel good and to be reignited with a new zest for life. Life alone is full of challenges that range from raising children, maintaining a marriage, a home, and of course a career. Women by nature are so many things to so many different people they are the givers of life and the backbone of the family. To be diagnosed with breast cancer takes a major toll on everyone in their world. And for those with this disease, it is much more challenging to keep up with every day demands, and still take care of one’s self. Not to mention the physical toll it takes on a woman’s body and appearance, it can sometimes be hard to simply feel beautiful as they did before. Drowning behind relationships, bills, and stress those fleeting moments of happiness that do occur become 20 times as meaningful. Some face the challenge longer than others, but the journey of survival is equally as daunting. Ms. Judy had spent 20+ years in the fashion and beauty industry, as a make-up artist and professional hairstylist. With her undeniable skill she worked her way into fabulous success, being the owner of Glam Faces as well as Judy’s Hair Design. She has been blessed with numerous
opportunities, including having served as a stylist to multiple celebrities. Working in her field she has had many experiences and encounters with lots of people. There was a moment in particular in which she was giving back to her community while working at a Breast Cancer Survivor Benefit Fashion Show with her friend Terrie Mason. Terrie is an avid supporter of Breast Cancer Awareness. In casual conversation Judy asked Terrie, “Why do you conduct these fashion shows?” Having been a survivor of breast cancer herself, Terrie proceeded to share her story with Judy, telling of her all her ups and downs. Judy realized that there was never a moment in the story where she heard Terrie say that she had done anything just for herself. Everything she had done had been for others. That alone got Judy thinking and an idea sparked about what she could do to create a special day for breast cancer survivors. That is where the idea for the “Breast Cancer Survivor Celebration of Life Photo Shoot” was born. After seeing the vision that God placed in her heart, Judy tossed and turned for several nights trying to devise a plan. Finally Judy asked “Lord, what are you trying to tell me? I’m listening. You have my full attention,” at this point being worn out she submitted. Sometimes it can be difficult to see the road ahead and the plan that God has laid out. Especially when you cannot see how it will come together. Still she knew that He was in control and from there she stepped out on faith. The idea of doing a photo shoot came back to her mind. Her following thought was “Well how will I pull this off? I don’t have the money to do this!”Not knowing how, where, or when this was going to happen she decided to share her idea on Facebook. To her surprise she got over 100 responses from businesses and people all over Houston (and surrounding cities) wanting to help, donate time, etc. When they say God not only shows up, but HE shows out, that is an understatement! Needless to say her sleepless nights came to an end. And so it began, Judy started calling hospitals and talking to anyone that would lend an ear to hear what she was trying to accomplish. She was in search of participants, women who had survived breast cancer and who would be interested in

partaking in the event designed just for them. Reponses started to flow shortly after. Judy had come up with a process for selecting the survivors that required the women to send in a brief story about their individual journey. That’s it! “I wanted it to be as simple and easy as possible,” she says. “I read all the stories BUT I don’t select them. That’s the “crazy” part. I read them and God shows me who to choose.” Judy says she also is the only one that reads the stories and usually she can get a good feel for the story within the first three sentences. “My team understands this part. They understand it better than me! But when you meet the ladies it really is an indescribable experience.” After searching and searching Judy found her first 6 breast cancer survivors to participate.
get together and started selling t-shirts for the remainder of the money needed. She also called on a few friends to donate and to bring what they could to help out. Borrowing clothes and asking boutiques to bring shoes and accessories, she was exhausting all resources, and putting her energy behind her new passion. Judy was pounding the pavement trying to spread the word far and wide. She wanted this to be a memorable event. She was in search of exposure and knew it would be even better with media
Word spread about Judy’s Hair Designs, and the event she was putting together. EVERYONE wanted in and to help in almost every way imaginable! Making her rounds and networking at an event for Shoezy Lover,Thedies of Thedies Image Consulting introduced her to Brian Walker who simply said “I’m in,” Judy was blown away by his support. At that same event she met 4 of her first vendors that would soon participate: Shoezy Lover – Makeba Collins, Thedies Broussard – Thedies Image Consulting, Rainey DeCatur Rainey’s Creole Lunchroom and Catering. Brian Walker who was eager to be involved eventually went on to become her “right-hand man.” Everything was coming together miraculously she had a team of passionate and talented individuals who were willing to help her carry out this vision. Judy had hoped for more than just 6 women to participate, but her team assured her that it would be a success regardless. Judy geared up and got ready for this special day to occur. Using connections she had made while living in Houston, she decided the most cost effective way would be to have it would be at the Hotel Indigo. She had done several events there prior and had received some gift certificates which would help her to conduct her first event. “We got our first room with NO money paid just a gift certificate!” Judy says. After that she later was able to get a bud-
attention so she sought it out. After all, these women deserved it! To her surprise it was a difficult to find a news station or correspondent that would run the story! Finally a good friend of Judy’s, Sonya Lister, took the story to Channel 11’s Sherry Williams, who decided to run it.As excited as she was, all the challenges of putting the event together were really taking a toll on Judy. She had broken down to the point of tears by the time she and Sherry Williams spoke. Sherry gave Judy the encouragement she needed. Later on Marshall Truehill one of the producers for KHOU met with Judy about the event. He was going to be the serving as a behind the scenes photographer as well

creating a video. June of 2011, was the first “Celebration of Life” event and Judy had no idea that it would become the start of a something monumental. Sherry had sent over a camera crew to capture the event and the crew was in awe of what they saw and remained majority of the day. There was an amazing turn out, with about 40 volunteers, from vendors and photographers, to hair and makeup artists, and more. The six participants were pampered and photographed until they got
tired. When they walked in they had to sit down because they were in awe of what everyone willingly had done for them. They talked, told their stories, sang, cried and laughed.Everyone had a ball! Finally after all they had endured someone cared enough to recognize them for what they had gone through. Some lost their jobs, husbands left them, some had even lost their homes, but none the less they were alive to celebrate. These beautiful survivors had experienced so much. A few had been cut from top to bottom, some had no breast, some had new breast, but despite all of that they sat there and let Judy and her team take care of them while they smiled and said “Thank
you,” a million times. They opened themselves up to a total group of strangers. “They tell me thank you, but I always say NO, Thank you for allowing us to do this for you.” Judy starts to cry just telling us about the experience. “The event was awesome everyone was so full! It was an experience you can’t put into words. It was a test of faith, a test of patience and a gift of JOY! We all talked the next morning and at about 5am we all just started crying, it was overwhelming, but they were happy tears,” says Judy. Before the event had ended that day everyone was already talking about the next one! Judy looked at Brian as he turned to her and said, “Let’s do it.” It took every bit of the following 4 months to plan the 2nd“Celebration of Life” event! It took place October 2011 and thanks to their previous story airing on KHOU-11 this time around it was much bigger. They had grown in participants reaching up to 19 breast cancer survivors!! They also got 2 new members to the team, Brittney Goff-Wiley, Sandy Monroe of DaiCor Baskets and help from Blueprint Media – Sharita Clark. “The larger it gets the harder it gets, but NOTHING can stop what God has already set.”There were a lot of ups and downs with this event, the day before, but once it was over the ladies had the time of their lives! One of the participants was Mrs. Debra Hollis Porter whose daughter Brittney came in got a t-shirt and started working with the team. She has been on board ever since! It didn’t stop there, Judy’s idea of a one-time event turned into to more than she ever imagined. Their 3rd one was Oct 14, 2012! with the help of friends, family and everybody contributing what they could to make it happen. Each time they have grown even larger. New things are being added each time. To date they have had 3 events and have grown to 25 ladies at their last event!! From 6 to 25 in 1 year bringing their total 48! Here at ShineOn Magazine, we shine a light on our everyday stars that perform extraordinary tasks. Judy Williams along with her team shine bright

as those stars illuminate the sky, and ironically enough we have another star here at ShineOn that has unknowingly crossed paths with Breast cancer survivors. Some of you may know her ,she is the beautiful and inspiring artist Melani Jackson. Melani is a talented musician who sings a song entitled “Stay True.” Written by producer Larry Summerville, the song is dedicated to promoting Breast Cancer Awareness. Melani tells ShineOn: “The song is about staying focused on your purpose, regardless of what type of things may happen and what life brings. We chose a happy song to release the energy of an overcomer as opposed to the struggle. The topic of breast cancer was chosen because it is a disease that affects most of us in one way or another. Too many people are dying from a disease which can be beat if detected early on.” ShineOn Magazine supports this uplifting and inspirational message. There is a music video that was made in support of the song. You can view it here: (http://youtu.be/ xwJ3EEd1l_Y) “We used actual breast cancer survivors in the video. We went to their homes and shot their scenes. We laughed, danced and played for real. Some of the survivors told us that they had not laughed or had that much fun in years,”
said Melani. Together our shining stars Judy Williams and her team, along with Melani Jackson and her crew, are calling attention to a very important matter. Breast cancer is a serious disease that we CAN do something about. Make sure that your mothers, sisters, daughters, and loved ones get the education they need pertaining to this disease. Be intentional about your health. Go for regular check-ups and above all be sure to get your annual breast exam. Women, we love you and we need you. To those who have been diagnosed, know that there are survivors and other women out there who know what you are going through. You are not alone and we encourage you to “Celebrate Life.” The Webster definition of SURVIVOR is: 1.to remain alive or in existence: to live on, and2. to continue to function or prosper. By the everlasting grace of our glorious Lord, these women, these mothers, these sisters, these angels, have survived beyond this physical battle. They have survived in spirit and in mind. They continue to exist as human beings and as victors. Praise be to the One above, for these women continue to LIVE ON, with a new sense of power infused by an unshakeable

faith. As lights unto our lives, may they continue to function as sources of inspiration and encouragement. And may they smile while they undoubtedly attain prosperity in life and love. The “Celebration of Life” event is held once a year for women that have survived breast cancer. This is a charity event, with over 50 businesses participating, from photography to makeup to dresses, shoes, styling and hair! We have it all FREE to Breast Cancer Survivors. We are always looking for sponsors for dresses, shoes and suits. Donations are always appreciated! CROHN’S disease a personal story by cestia Miller

ou never know what a person’s life may be like and how fortunate you may be in comparison to them. It is important to take the time out once in a while to simply ask someone about their life and sincerely care about their answer. There are some people who live with fear, pain, or even hopelessness. Life for them just does not seem fair or even worth all the trouble. Some of us may even fall into one of those categories and although we may not want anyone to pity us, we still are craving for someone to understand us. Most things that are challenging mean so much more when it happens to us individually or to loved ones that we care about. When it hits so close to home it resonates with us on a deeper level, especially when our health is on the line. There are a number of debilitating diseases out there, but I would like to bring attention to one in particular called “Crohn’s Disease.” I feel that there are others like me who need a voice and I am willing to intimately share my story with the world. Crohn’s disease is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which causes inflammation in the lining of the digestive tract. Often times this can lead to abdominal pain, severe diarrhea and even malnutrition. Inflammation caused by Crohn’s disease can involve different areas of the digestive tract in different people. The

publisher There are a wide range of social classes, groups, and religions that form the various communities we see today around the world. Existing within those communities are our families, our businesses, and all the facets of life that tie us together.Giving back to the community is a way that we as individuals show our care and concern. And why wouldn’t we? These communities are the backbone of our society. Our community is where we walk our first city block or our first country mile. It is the place where we learn to worship and build, and it’s our community whom we turn to in time of crisis. Not only do we create our homes within them, more importantly our children are raised by them and our children are most assuredly our future. We want them to be able to thrive in a community full of knowledge and opportunity. By giving back we can infuse our city blocks, country roads, and back alleys with love and support. Lending a helping hand towards the construction of an improved and goal oriented society.

make a
difference in someones life Just By Looking Good While Networking By Javona Smith
I
t does not matter if you’re black, white, red or yellow - If you’re like most women, you enjoy helping others, being social, and take pride in your hair. One study showed that women give 89% more to charities than men overall. Women have been nurturers since the beginning of time, and probably will be until time is no more. They enjoy a sense of purpose when they are extending a helping hand. Women are simply more likely to help those who can never repay them. Here is an opportunity for those women who purchase hair from those who doesn’t give back to our communities and instead, purchase from those who want to give back. Instead of going to a store which takes time and transportation both of which costs money, you can now purchase your hair online with confidence! Or, if you’re a hairstylist, this is an opportunity to offer your clients the convenience of purchasing hair in your salon while providing others the help they need. Women THRIVE when communicating with others, whether it is their family, friends, religious group members or even online. Women are also MASTERS at making money stretch, or more of it, simply by being social. They naturally converse about their Family, Occupation, Recreation and then about Money (FORM). Talking FORM is why women
are so phenomenal at social networking. Women take pride in their appearance, especially their hair. The hair care product market is a multi-billion dollar business and African American women support more than half of the revenue and yet represndent less than 10% of the USA population. Of that hair extensions represent almost half of that revenue, which includes lace front wigs as well, We see women of all races, in the media, faking it and wigging out (with hair extensions and lace-front wigs of course!) These women include Beyonce, Katy Perry, Pamela Anderson, and Tyra Banks just to name a few. So then, you may ask, how do we cash out on all three attributes? I’m certainly glad you asked! Micore International is an e-Commerce business for hair. It was started in 2009 because there exists a need for women to profit from the hair extensions they invest billions of their own money (and/or their husbands money) into every year. At this time there is virtually NO competition, in the MLM arena, for hair extensions. And men can make money as well! Here’s the greatest part, a portion of the money Alluring Styles a distributor of the Micore International hair system brings to the table is to fund 5 different community based organizations each month. By bring-

ing this attention the organizations can also reach out to their followers and keep their contributions going on their own if desired and Alluring Styles will show them how. Alluring Styles encourages those reading this article to make them aware of those organizations that may be making a difference and would like to get into the rotation.. Alluring Styles of Micore International Hair systems are prepared to donate to organizations such as Smile Train, who helps poor children have surgery on their clefts. These children, who are born with clefts, cannot eat or speak properly,
aren’t allowed to attend school, will never get married or hold a job if they do not have the $250 surgery. Alluring Styles Micore International distributor understands the need and is able to donate because of readers like YOU who truly care. I live to be an agent of change. It’s a necessity for my existence to cause another’s existence to change for the better. When that happens...my life is a success. FEED your FAITH and your FEARS will STARVE.” Those are words spoken by the beautiful and talented Melani Jackson. Growing up in a Baltimore neighborhood where drugs and crime were right next door Melani was the sheltered daughther of a preacher, who had a musical destiny waiting for her in the wings. I AM: melani I am Melani; that is pronounced Me-lah-nee. Not to be confused with Melanie. I was born in Baltimore city, daughter of a preacher, later a pastor. Lived in a neighborhood where crime and drugs were right next door. I was sheltered and music was my outlet. I have always had a heart for the rejected ones. In elementary school, I hung out with the under dogs, I would make them my friends. I have seen a lot growing up in the church, but one thing that stood out to me too often, was the fact that some people were rejected when they “looked or talked” different. So even though I was “one of them” I always kept distance from the
cliques. I could feel the heart of the people. And the people are my inspiration. I worked a 9-5 job while doing my music most of my life. I told myself that my last job would be my last job and when doors opened that I would pursue my music full time. Well a door did open, my company was shut down and I was not ready. I was thrown into unemployment, but remembered my vow. So I decided to still work at least 8 hours a day, but for my music. Melani, Share with us the role music plays in your life? Never have I known anything that could captivate me

the way that music has. I found my voice, my courage, my place in the world. Music is my outlet and my sanctuary. I am a singer, and a songwriter. I live it. My day starts very early every day. I never oversleep. I am consumed with my responsibility, my responsibility to get my message to the people. I have a music studio in my home, so it’s very easy for me to translate the messages from my dreams when I wake at 2:3o am. You have very strong messages and your music seems to be directed to a certain audience, can you share with us how you write and what
are your thoughts when you write? People seem to feel the messages in my songs, which is really no surprise to me because I write from my heart. I have this uncanny gift to feel the heart of people sometimes. This helps me to be very empathetic to people that many would reject. I guess that is the audience that I am after, because I can feel the heart of rejected people. I know that it must be something that God gave me because he wants me to use it. Makes me kind of understand why He forgives us. I am by no means perfect or good. But for some reason I am trusted. Wow, such an honor. He
knows me, and still trusts me. You seem so natural, confident and approachable, how would you describe your personality and what affect that may have? Me, imperfect me, the shy church girl who was afraid to look people in the eyes? Feeling slightly less than beautiful growing up, because I had cocoa colored skin instead of butterscotch, in a family of the later, I had so many words in my head that I was afraid to say because I had that curse called shyness. Away from the cameras, the stage and the audience, I still am a bit quiet. From the years of being afraid to speak, I learned to

observe and listen, and it works for me. Great song writers usually write from their own experiences and find comfort and therapeutic results in their music. Can you share with us those who helped shape and guide your gift and how that took shape? The first man that I decided to give my heart to asked me to choose between him and my first love. I chose him. It was ok. My father gave me to him. My father was my hero, my superman. He would know a villain. So I gave up everything that was uniquely me. Within days of the death of my hero, I found out that the man that I gave up everything for was not who I thought he was. He betrayed me, and hurt me in every way possible. But, more so than any of this, I could not find my sanctuary. What I did find was God. He was right there, like he knew that I would need him at that exact moment; the moment where
I had lost my connection with sanity. Maybe He was there too, when that man that I trusted had that 38 against my temple, but somehow the trigger never got pulled. I lay on the floor in a pool of tears and made a promise that I would use what I have to help someone else, if I made it out of that place. Oh, yeah He helped me find my sanctuary too. Nobody who truly loved me would make me choose to walk away from what I have always loved. I have 2 men who were very important in the shaping and guiding of this girl, musically. The 1st is my college music director, Dr. Nathan Carter. He was a no nonsense kind of person who accepted no excuses for less than excellence. The 2nd is my producer and good friend Larry Summerville, Jr. Come to think of it, he has the same qualities as Dr. Carter. They both seemed to have an eye for things in a person that we have not seen in ourselves. Then with that no
nonsense kind of way, get exactly that. Now, I do have a 3rd person whom I must mention, my sister, Nina. Not musical at all, but an awesome writer. She has been my cheerleader, in the good, the bad and the ugly. She means more to me than I ever say. What is next for Melani and what subject matter seems to guide you? Now, I have to make up for lost time. And I have so much to say, and not afraid to say it. Hey, I am kind of special. He knows me and still likes me. That’s kind of cool, right? So here goes. I am doing it, right now. Saying what I wanted to say. Writing and making music, my heart music. I speak from what I see, what I experience and what I feel. I call myself an agent of change. I need my existence to cause somebody else’s existence to change for the better. When that happens, my life is a success. I am Melani and I make my music for me, you and whoever needs my message.v

Bringing

L
+earning & Development Childcare Association provides connection, to our membership of parents, independent seasoned and newly organized child care providers and associates, towards enhancing confidence and concreteness in their skills, communication and development with each other and children. We are excited about the 2013 launch of this association and the services it will open to our members. Our professionals, backgrounds in the elementary setting and in the childcare industry, have had history in viewing many children and their environments. The childcare industry gave us a more
intimate contact. We shared some concepts with those first time parents as well as a few seasoned parents and in turn, they shared with us their needs and thus LDCA was born. Welcome, we want to connect our membership to our varied projects that will enhance confidence and concreteness of skills, communication and development throughout the evolution of parenting, child care ownership and associates’ endeavors. We name a few projects below: 1. “Spot Parenting” Webinars- address needs of parents and childcare providers in a catalog of informative and fun webinars.
42 • ShineOn Magazine • Copyright 2013 All Rights Reserved • Design & Layout by MechKW Design www.MechKW.com
2. “The Package Your Child Comes In: a word from thriving parents” This book is helpful to parents and childcare providers. “Childcare Storied Book” series are anytime books that provide interactive communication between children and parent as well as parent to parent and childcare providers. 3. Child Care Fusion podcast discusses parents’ journeys with the issues of their children. http://www.blogtalkradio.com/child-carefusion 4. Quarterly newsletter- Mileage gives members a moment in time to have their expressions read and learned from. Surveys are posted to measure the quality of service of LDCA
together. We are “Bringing them in”. LDCA will work to be a conduit to our members of parents, child care owners and associates. Understand this: We listen! We understand that parenting is stressful, especially for the first-time parent. All parents need a tune-up every so often. Learning and Development Childcare Association is the parent tune-up specialist. Do you know that less stressed parents are more accomplished in connecting and communicating with their children? You want to know how? In the “Spot Parenting” webinars, FUN is one expression in parenting skills.
5. Templates of childcare forms and parent handbooks for the licensed child care provider.
Upgrade or downgrade your parenting skills and style, understanding the limits of reasoning skills with small children and observingwhy it’s important.
6. Annual cruise, under the ‘Dare 2 Dream Cruises’, for those who want to be informed, interact and relax a bit. Parents, child care owners and associates rejuvenate! LDCA is the hub to gather, expound and expand. We are excited about our adventures
Your child’s overall development is of great benefit to our communities, parents can learn how to set developmental goals that would carry your educational participation throughout your child’s life. Making sure the goals are measurable and

realistic for the age group and how to and bringing those goals into the levels of elementary, middle school and high school. We would encourage parents to have local ‘Coffee Gathers’ to discuss life as a person and the goals set and accomplished for themselves only. The idea is to take care of you. The focus discussions are always about the parent as a person and habitual self: who is that and how to obtain. Be as excited as we are, join us! Child care owners understand the serious undertaking in being the second educator and protector too many parents’ children. They also know there is isolation in this industry. Connecting with the LDCA will assist in bringing child care providers some avenues of fun and opportunities with other child care providers from time to time. We will touch on subject matters like the ‘child care hoppers’- those parents that skip out of one child care and go to another. Our child care owner members becoming peer beacons in their communities in building and maintaining monthly meetings, called ‘Stop the Madness’ that would strengthen the management and financial sections of their businesses. LDCA wants to give you access to extensive forms that can be used in your daily business. Be as excited as we are, join us! Our associate membership- industries, businesses, organizations and corporations, have the opportunity to: 1. Advertise monthly on LDCA’s Calendar
2. Provide communication opportunities of services and products that would include the parents and child care owners. 3. In communities where there are ‘Stop the Madness’ monthly meetings of our child care owners, our associate members are encouraged to be participants. Be as excited as we are, join us! Breaking out of the closet V It was a lovely Saturday afternoon, when you were out and about on the town having a day just to do as you please. Driving around in your car you had a brief thought about that chic top you had seen at the local boutique the previous week. “I’ve got some extra cash and some free time,
might as well swing by and add a little something to my wardrobe!” You figured that since you’ve been working hard you deserve a treat and after all it’s just “one purchase” right?
You pull up and see the large yellow “SALE!” sign in the window. Instantly you get excited, but soon after, that excitement
is met with your inner voice who says: “Now you know you don’t need anymore clothes.” Naturally you ignore it, thinking you’ll just go in, grab what you came for and maybejust spend a little time browsing. Thirty minutes go by and you still don’t have in your hand the one thing you showed up for! Instead you’ve got 3 pairs of
46 • ShineOn Magazine • Copyright 2013 All Rights Reserved • Design & Layout by MechKW Design www.MechKW.com
B.o.o.t.c pants, and a sweet blazer that you just HAVE to try on. It just so happens that 2 out of 3 pairs of pants fit you perfectly, so of course that means you have to take them home. And that blazer, well…you knew it was yours the moment you laid eyes on it. Oh, that’s right you forgot about the top! Yoink! “Ok, now where’s that bank card?” So there you are, walking out with your large boutique bag and your sunglasses contemplating your outfit for the following day. You get home drop the keys on the counter and start to head to your closet. You know “the closet,” that special place where you just throw in everything? You look around in search of hangers and say aloud, “Man I’ve got to get rid of some of these old clothes!” Now this would be the 25th time you’ve said that to yourself, but somehow you just can’t seem to find the time to go through all of that clothes, some with tags that you have never even worn. Ah! Empty hangers, you grab them and proceed to hang up the newest members to your wardrobe, sound about right? Well, THAT was 6 months ago.
That beautiful top has yet to see the light of day, and those pants well three days after they were hanged they somehow just didn’t seem to fit as well as they did when you tried them on. The blazer for some odd reason is hanging next to that parka, the one you bought the year before for that trip that you never took. However, don’t feel guilty! Trust and believe it’s not just you. This is the sad truth for just about everyone! EVERYONE has something in their closet that they either have never worn or can no longer fit. The collection just seems to expand over the years, and the clutter grows like a weed. Not so pretty huh? It’s time for a radical change! Enough is enough. No more wasting money on clothes that will never be separated from their original price tag. No more hanging on to those favorite pair of Bermuda shorts as “weight loss motivation.” It’s time to BREAK OUT OF THE CLOSET! And Alluring Styles is going to help you do just that. Join us as we go door to door raiding closets everywhere! We will go into the homes of people who know that they need some help BREAKING OUT!
The B.O.O.T.C crew will gut out that closet of yours, making you try on every piece of clothing that you own. If it doesn’t fit or if the price tag has been on it for way too long, we give you 2 options: Option 1. You can donate the clothing to Salvation Army, Goodwill, or a charity of your choosing. Option number 2: is to donate your clothes to a boutique or clever fashionista that can redesign them. The clothes end up being recyclable fashions ending up in the hands of people who will actually wear them! Best of all while you are helping others, you may be even creating a tax savings for yourself or your family from the donations. Your closet can once and for all be filled with clothes that you feel/ look good in. And who knows what you could do with a little extra space! Stayed tuned for our upcoming events and stories with the B.O.O.T.C crew and if you would like to be a part of our team email us crew@bootc.biz. They will be coming to a city near you! How we look can impact how we feel. We can put on a certain dress or accessory and that one item can potentially evoke a mood of confidence within us. It’s amazing how we have the ability to do this simply by changing our clothes! Most assuredly it is not a secret that our hair styles, beauty and accessory trends are how we develop our own sense of style. Culturally we focus on the latest creations brought to the runways, fashion magazines or even street wear which all play a role in our personal style. Well Spring ’13 ladies and gents is all about color! One of the things I like about being an indie designer it is the ability to think outside the box. After all it is about expressing one’s individual creativity and style. Pastels are what is in this spring/summer season and trust it IS possible to stay trendy by working with what you have

V
isually stimulating, outlandishly innovative, and undoubtedly original every piece handcrafted by BOHO is created with a sense of uniqueness that is helping this company make a name for themselves in the world of fashion and design. Best of Hand Crafted Designs (BOHO) is a stylish and affordable brand who strives to see their patrons looking and feeling their best while staying true to their personality. Founded in 2008 by Sharon Neal and her nephew Davis Lawrence, the passion for their art has been passed down through the generations beginning with Sharon’s late father. Her father had been an art teacher in the local community and at a nearby Christian school when Sharon was young. His creative ability rubbed off on his daughter as he taught her different ways to turn simple objects into masterpieces. In the 70’s she began making her own jewelry. More than a hobby, designing had become her greatest love. When her nephew Davis was young he would spend time with
his Aunt Sharon and her father building tiny cities out of cardboard boxes as art was being created around him. The artistic vibe was infectious. One day while Sharon and Davis were our shopping there was a piece of jewelry that Davis had his eyes set on. “You want to pay for that? You can make that! I’ll show you!” his aunt told him, and from that moment BOHO Designs was birthed. Starting with home showings, and flea markets, BOHO is now showcasing at major fashion events including 3 recently done in New York. They were nominated in 2012 as one of the top three designers in the FASHION AWARDS MD event! They are now setting their sights on being able to showcase their designs in Couture Fashion Week. There is no doubt that they are heading in the right direction. “Everything we do is about selfexpression,” said Sharon.“You can step out knowing that the piece we have designed was made specifically for you, and there is NONE OTHER like it.”
challenges. “Family has their own differences, which can sometimes spill over to business. So the biggest challenge is knowing where to draw the line between the two. I think we can all agree on that,” Sharon laughs. The age gap between she and her nephew has been more beneficial than challenging surprisingly. The two feel that it is just like mixing a little old with the new which gives an interesting twist to their creative flair. Together they hope to inspire other upcoming designers to stay true to themselves despite challenges or criticism. Sharon told Shine On Magazine, “You have to LOVE your craft that is what’s most important, and we absolutely love what we do.”
