Lyra Aoko: Photographer In Praise Of Beauty And The Melanin Girl Interview By Lisa Mugera

Photographer, art director and BAKE nominated blogger, Lyra Aoko has a knack for picking her camera and taking shots of women. The message behind these pictures? Melanin girls are curated with love. Through her blog, CYNOSURE (meaning ‘the centre of attraction’), Lyra is without a doubt doing her part to bring out the attraction that is women, as well as bring a focus to other lifestyle pieces. Because of this, she’s been able to create a name for herself as a well-versed portrait photographer. I talked to her about her passion in photography and this is what she had to say: What’s the inspiration behind your photography? I am inspired by all the beauty around me and I aim to capture it all through my photography. Beauty exists all around us and photography has inspired my appreciation of everything and everyone since I began shooting. Tell me more about your blog, ‘CYNOSURE’. Through CYNOSURE, I document life in the city and all around the country. Very many media outlets dwell on the negatives portrayed in the country and my blog aims to showcase Kenya in the best light possible. What exactly makes you as a photographer, sort of ‘see’ and capture things, places or people’s beauty in a way that the ordinary eye wouldn’t? Some say that you are born with it; the ability to see things in a different and more creative way which I agree with wholeheartedly. Your life and experiences play a great role in your visual prowess. However, I also believe that hard work and equipping yourself with the knowledge needed to become better in your craft is important. Having a creative eye merged with the technical knowledge of the craft definitely helps you grow as a photographer. Do you take pictures of yourself just for fun? And if so, how many in say… a week? I hardly take pictures of myself nowadays, but I really enjoy making and capturing memories through my work. Take a minute and look around you. What/ who would you take a pic of at the snap of a finger? I would take a picture of the sky because although it’s a cold and dull day, there is a unique beauty in how the clouds have gathered.
