Meet the 22 Year Old Behind Kenya’s First Book of Discounts Interview by Tim Mworia In 2015 Sharon Njoroge introduced DisCoucher, Kenya’s first book of discounts. Within it are free discount vouchers from hotels, restaurants and spas. It’s mechanics are simple. Buy one, get one free. When you buy a product or service at a participating establishment, you trigger the use of a voucher. For instance, if you buy a meal at the Carnivore, you can then redeem another meal of the same amount using a voucher from the book. It is a 100-page ticket to freebie heaven. Sharon got the idea while in Dubai where she lived and studied for 10 years. DisCoucher has partnered with over 50 outlets in and out of Nairobi to offer such discounts. But it hasn’t been a breeze. 22-year-old Sharon forms part of a unique but growing group of Kenyans. Young individuals who for one reason or the other spent their formative years in a foreign land. “They like to call us Third Culture Kids,” she says They have moved between cultures, inadvertently turning into rolling stones. For some like Sharon, home eventually beckons. And through the process of rediscovering it, the reality of their divided culture comes into play, posing challenges. How do they cope? I sat down with Sharon for a candid talk about setting up shop in Kenya. Here are some highlights from our chat.

KENYABUZZ: How popular was the book of discounts in Dubai? SHARON: It was huge. They had over a thousand services. KENYABUZZ: How much about the idea did you learn from the people who did it in Dubai? SHARON: I learnt a lot about what offers work, what don’t work, what customers want, what appeals to customers. KENYABUZZ: How much of it did you have to learn on your own? SHARON: A lot. For instance one of things I learnt from the product in Dubai was selling in supermarkets. Here, the books did not move or sell as I had planned. KENYABUZZ: How did you find it starting a new business in Kenya generally? SHARON: I cheated. [Laughs]. So this is why I cheated. If you see DisCoucher, it’s actually a trademark under an existing company. I approached them and am a trademark under them, so fortunately I don’t have to deal with taxes and all that. Technically DisCoucher is not a self autonomous business; it’s connected to an existing company. KENYABUZZ: Does this affect the product or end user in any way? SHARON: Not at all. I just wanted to simplify my coming in and starting the business in any way I could. KENYABUZZ: Did you have any reservations or fears of starting out in Kenya especially after being away from the country for most of your formative years? SHARON: Naturally. I think there was a lot of fear in starting a business, and moving to Kenya, period. My biggest reservation was adjusting. It’s a very odd dynamic when you are from here, but you are not here. And then I don’t have friends but people assume that I’d have friends here. So it’s like building everything from scratch; building a business, building a social life, finding my footing in a place that is familiar yet I’m a foreigner, my friends tease me and call me “Oreo” because I’m Kenyan on the outside, not on the inside. [Laughs]. KENYABUZZ: Why go through the trouble then? Your family lives in Dubai, you have a good education from abroad and could easily have gotten a well-paying job and lived a comfortable life out there.

SHARON: A lot of people ask me this question. [Laughs]. To this day I still don’t have an answer. I think it comes down to the fact that when I finished university it was either, get a job or do this business. KENYABUZZ: So you chose the business and moved to Kenya. SHARON: Yes. My mum has a business here but she lives there (Dubai). And she was saying, “Just start the business but live in Dubai...” I think for me, it was a no-brainer. If I want to do this, I want to do it well. I don’t want to do it half-heartedly, I don’t want to do it detached. And I’ve also learnt from seeing my mum doing her businesses, it’s difficult to run a business when you’re not there locally. Because you’re not understanding the consumers, you’re not understanding your market, and what’s happening around your business. KENYABUZZ: But the general environment in the country with the rampant cases of corruption and even around the time you were starting out in 2015, with the “MyDressMyChoice” incidences of intolerance towards women. Both were widely reported issues, even in international media. I imagine that would have demoralized most people looking to come into the country to live and work. But not you. SHARON: I think it comes down to the people around you. I have a father who really believes in Kenya. He loves Kenya. He’s always spoken with such optimism and such hope for the country. So whenever we’d have debates about this he‘d always be like, “But you find those issues anywhere. You can go to China or India and find them. But what are you as an individual doing to change that. It’s your country.” My parents have always instilled in me that I am Kenyan first. I am always going to end up here. And if you wanna see a change, you have to be the one to make it. As for the “MyDressMyChoice”, those issues manifest themselves differently in different countries. But if you look at that as keeping you from starting, then you’ll never start and you’ll never do anything. Because there’s always a problem. Corruption is a big issue and it still pisses me off. It pisses me that taxes here are so high and you still drive in ridiculous roads. It’s frustrating. But there’s no place that’s perfect. You could be in the West but racism is real, that’s something I struggled with growing up.

KENYABUZZ: And being a 22 year old, female, with a foreign accent and new ideas. That’s a combination that’s usually frowned upon around here too. How did you deal with that? SHARON: I don’t think I dealt with it directly. I picked up a habit of switching accents. So I can talk like this one minute, then I can talk with a complete Kenyan accent. Throw me in a matatu, you won’t hear me talking like this. I blend in. The issue I’ve had with being a woman is just inappropriate meetings. You know, you sit down for a professional meeting and a guy is hitting on you or making inappropriate comments. I’m like come on man, we’re here for work. This is not the time.

“You sit down for a professional meeting and a guy is hitting on you.” KENYABUZZ: And I can only imagine that an idea like yours requires a lot of meetings. SHARON: Yeah. I’ve had a lot of uncomfortable meetings. There are establishments which I will not talk to. [Laughs]. KENYABUZZ: What has the response been like to DisCoucher? SHARON: Very positive. People love it. I think the biggest challenge is just getting people to build a trust with the product and see that it actually works. That takes time. KENYABUZZ: Is it reasonable to think that you can get a copy of this book to every urban Nairobian? SHARON: That is the goal. The vision of DisCoucher is to be the hub of everything discounts. Be it discounted hotel nights, restaurants, beauty etc. But the greatest focus for me is that FREE element. I want when you use my discount voucher to feel like it is a gift– like, “I’m getting something for free. This is awesome!”. There’s more of an impact with that. KENYABUZZ: Leave me with a gem of wisdom from your experiences so far. SHARON: Oh Gosh. [Laughs]. Persevere. There are so many days I’ve woken up and think to myself, “why am I doing this? It would be so much easier if I was employed and had a consistent income”. I think all good things take time, don’t give up. Persevere... yeah. And that’s me telling myself that because last month was a hard one, I was like “I’m so done. I’m done.” For the full interview please visit http://www.kenyabuzz.com/ lifestyle/category/interviews.
