Press Release NEW RECORD PRODUCTIVITY PERFORMANCES SET AT THE PORT OF MOMBASA Two productivity records registered at Port of Mombasa Berth productivity forms a critical part of the Authority’s mandate Mombasa 19th June 2018‌Two new record productivity performances in container handling operations have been registered at the Port of Mombasa breaking past records set three years ago. A Container carrier - Mv. Kota Lambai - docked at berth No.17 recorded an average of 82 gross moves per hour breaking the record performance of 65 gross moves per hour registered by another container carrier Mv. Clemens Schulte in August 2015. The vessel registered under The Pacific international Lines (PIL), recorded 3,465 gross moves in 42.34 hours having registered her first and last cargo slings on Saturday at 0820 hrs and Sunday 0600 hrs respectively. Gross moves per hour is a maritime productivity term that defines the total container movement (on loading, offloading and repositioning) divided by the number of hours for which the vessel is at berth. The new record is an improvement of 26% from the prior record at the Mombasa Port. Flying the Singaporean flag, the vessel, which sailed out on Sunday morning cumulatively discharged 1,446 full containers and loaded another 1,436 empty and 18 full containers. The ship has a length overall of 260.71m, and a breadth of 32.3m. MV Clemens Schulte, a Maersk Shipping Line vessel celebrated as one of the largest vessel to dock at the Port of Mombasa then recorded 3,397 gross moves in 52.33 hours. Spanning a length overall of 255 meters and 37.5 meters breadth, the ship cumulatively discharged 1,156 full containers , loaded 54 full containers and 2102 empty export containers. Equally, another new best shift performance record was set on Sunday by container carrier Mv. Ever Dynamic that recorded 1,117 gross moves at an average of 159 moves per hour. The record surpasses the last one of 1039 gross moves in eight hours at an average of 129 moves per hour set by another container ship Mv. Karmen in October 2015. The acting Managing Director Dr. Arch. Daniel Manduku has attributed the notable performance to the progressive efforts the Authority has put in place to ensure decongestion of the Port and optimal utilization of equipment at the container terminal.


“We shall continuously monitor and effectively ensure that this performance is surpassed in the coming weeks and all cargo is moved as efficiently as possible,� he added. PIL shipping Line operations Manager Mr. Elijah Mbaru commended the Authority for enabling their vessel set a new record. He appreciated the allocation of adequate equipment and the maximum support from the staff during the time the vessel was alongside the berth. Mr.Mbaru undertook to continue cooperating with KPA whenever they were called upon to do so to enhance efficiency in the Port operations.
