ore Silver has been mined here in the last 130 years than anyplace on the planet, over 1.3 billion ounces and counting—dwarfing the famous Comstock Lode.

In fact, if you add in all the precious and base metals mined locally, more than $7 billion worth of mineral wealth has been produced from beneath these mountains. Wallace offers several attractions telling the engaging story of the Silver Capital of the World.

T

he Sierra Silver Mine Tour

This entertaining tour is the closest thing to working underground itself.

Retired miners take you underground to tour a real silver mine.

You’ll see them work the mining equipment while they answer your questions and give you an authentic “that’s the way it is” story of mining.

The Sierra Silver Mine opened in 1900 and was worked for several decades. The mine was turned into a subterranean classroom in the 1970s, teaching Wallace High School students mining techniques and mine safety vocational courses.

Mining Heritage Exhibit

Just west of the Wallace Visitor Center (I-90 Exit 61) is a free outdoor museum created by Mining Heritage, Inc. The layout depicts the evolution of local mining from the days of hand tools to the modern techniques and mechanization used today. Interpretative signs guide you into what has been a tedious, physically demanding occupation. Enjoy hands on exhibits and read more about the exhibit with free brochures now available.

ake a trip back in time to when railroads were the kings of transportation with a visit to Wallace’s iconic Northern Pacific Railroad Depot Museum.

The château style depot, which houses the museum and gift shop, has been a focal point of the grand architecture and historical heritage of Wallace. In 1976, while still in business as a railroad station, the depot was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Inside the lovingly restored building find a host of interpretive exhibits and artifacts.

step into a re-creation of an early working railroad station. Exhibits tell the rich history of railroading in the Coeur d’Alene Mining District and the depot itself. Railroads have been at work in the Coeur d’Alene silver mining region since 1887. The last train to service the area was July 15th, 1992. The Northern Pacific Depot was constructed in 1901 with unique bricks from the Olympian Hotel, the original terminus of the transcontinental NPRR in Tacoma.

The bricks were manufactured by Gladding McBean Bricks of Lincoln, California. Concrete panels were made from mine tailings. In 1986, due to the construction of I-90, the building was moved approximately 200 feet across the Coeur d’Alene River to its current location.

Every year in May Wallace celebrates the anniversary of the Depot’s move, the day before Mother’s Day, with the Depot Day Classic Automobile Show. on’t miss standing at the Center of the Universe, located at the intersection of Bank and Sixth Street in downtown Historic Wallace. Begun years ago as a tongue-in-cheek protest to federal over-reach, it is now a popular downtown attraction.

In a classic gesture of a tiny David thumbing a nose at indifferent Goliaths of federal agencies, then Wallace Mayor Ron Garitone issued this Proclamation: “I, Ron Garitone, Mayor ofWallace, Idaho, and all of its subjects, and being of sound body and mind, do hereby solemnly declare and proclaimWallace to be the Center of the Universe.

After years of diligence, (being) unable to unearth one scintilla of proof that Wallace is NOT the Center of the Universe... we are compelled to conclude that Wallace must therefore BE the Center of the Universe.

So ordered and declared, this year 2004, this date, September 25th, this hour, 9:00 PMWUT (Wallace Universal Time).

Far from running from that hstory, Wallace celebrates it -and does so in style.

The Oasis Bordello Museum offers 20 to 30 minute guided tours of one of Wallace’s grand old brothels.

The Oasis was in business from 1895 to 1988 (yes, 1988). The occupants left in a hurry, leaving behind everything from the lipstick on the dressers to a sack of groceries in the kitchen. The main floor has on display several items of interest from the good old days, as well as a case filled with items found in the building.

Triumph, tragedy, terrible beauty: the Pulaski Trail

hat 100 plus years ago was a hellscape wreckage of burnt forest today is a beautiful mountain hike with cascading waterfalls, wildlife and towering woods --the Pulaski Trail.

On Aug. 20, 1910, a great and historic forest fire swept across northern Idaho and western Montana. It cost 87 lives, blackened 3 million acres, and destroyed one-third of the city of Wallace.

The Great Fire of 1910 would change the course of national policy toward wildfire, by thereafter refocusing the then-fledgling Ranger Ed U.S. Forest Service on fire Pulaski, hero prevention and firefighting of the Great as the topmost agency 1910 Fire priorities.

The zipline offers ten different courses. Each has “dual zips,” allowing the option of flying in the prone or “superhero” position with speeds up to 60 mph (or slower for the less wild at heart). etting high has a whole different meaning in Wallace. Folks do it here by climbing our extensive and scenic stair system. Years ago, people climbed the stairs of Wallace to get from one residential street to the next on the steep south hills.

Over the years, the stairs became dilapidated and overgrown with trees and brush. In 2011, the City, volunteers, businesses and historic preservation groups joined forces to begin an ongoing restoration of the staircas-

The trailhead lies about a mile south of Wallace on Moon Pass Road (the continuation of Wallace’s King Street or USFS Road 456). From the trailhead, a moderately challenging

Discover lost treasure at Crystal Gold Mine 14 2016-2017

om Irwin, a gold prospector, discovered a gold bearing vein in 1879; he built a cabin and mined the vein for three years.

He blasted the hillside down to hide the mine before he left, leaving his track, mine car and tools inside — But Irwin never returned, and the mine stayed hidden -- lost for over a hundred years.

In 1991, the then owner saw water seeping out of the hillside. Hoping it was a spring, he dug into the bank and partially uncovered the portal.

In 1996 the site was sold to a retired

The trail includes 10 tunnels and seven trestles as high as 230 feet along Loop Creek canyon within the beautiful Bitterroot Mountains.

The best part is it’s all downhill with a gentle 1.6 percent average grade that drops 1,000 feet over the 15-mile length. Shuttle buses are available to transport bikes and bikers back to the top.

Forest, mountain pass and scenic river await travelers driving north on Wallace’s Sixth Street which becomes Dobson Pass Road (Rte. 456). The route “Ts” at Forest Service Road 9. Head west and follow the road along river to Enaville and Kingston.

Roll east at the “T” and discover the historic communities of Pritchard and Murray. Many picnic areas and campgrounds can be found, especially along the river. Once in Murray visit the old gold mining camp’s famous cemetery, Bedroom Goldmine, Sprag Pole Restaurant and Museum.

The Cataldo Mission

Idaho’s oldest extant building, the Old Cataldo Mission stands on a hill 20 miles west of Wallace along Interstate 90. Begun in 1850 by Jesuit Priest Anthony Ravalli, the entire 90ft. by 40ft. and 30ft. high building was hand built and carved. Now the site of a state park/interpretive center, open year round.

started playing out, Silver was discovered. By 1886, mining claims covered most of the great mines of the district.

That year the first school opened here with 15 children from a population of 500 hardy souls. The first narrow gauge railroad arrived in 1887 and several downtown businesses were well established including the first saloon.

Wallace soon had plank sidewalks trod by immigrant miners from all over the world. With prosperity came shoot-outs and banditry. In 1890, a flue in the Central Hotel began a fire

New brick buildings, most still standing, were begun immediately. (The entire east side of town burned down again during the 1910 forest fire.)

In 1892 and again in 1899, labor wars broke out between fledgling unions and mining companies. U.S. Army troops including the famous Buffalo Soldiers segregated units imposed martial law here for years as requested by Idaho Governors. Hundreds of miners were imprisoned in a makeshift prison termed the “bullpen,” following the dynamiting of area mills.

Wallace has had its flirtation with Hollywood over the years, beginning with silent films in the 1920s and as the backdrop of major motion pictures in the 1980s and 1990s. It was the birthplace and childhood home of movieland star Lana Turner. Here are movies filmed in and around here.

Dante’s Peak (1996)

Dante’s Peak was an adventure film from Universal Pictures starring Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton shot largely in Wallace and nearby communities.

Released in 1996, it was made in the grand Hollywood disaster flick tradition.

The movie depicts how a fictional Dante’s Peak town (Wallace) gets obliterated by a malignant volcano of the same name.

Filled with campy near death escapes by Brosnan and Hamilton, the film has become a cult classic. Each year thousands of Dante’s Peak fans flock to Wallace. Props from the film can be seen at the Wallace District Mining Museum including the Dante’s Peak Museum sign and prop styrofoam “bricks” used in the disaster scenes

Heaven’s Gate (1981)

Heaven’s Gate, a western epic from director Michael Cimono and starring among others Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, Jeff Bridges, Willem Dafoe, John Hurt and Mickey Rourke, contains footage filmed in downtown Wallace in June and July of 1979. Parts of Wallace were made to resemble an old West town with dirt streets and wood sidewalks.

The United Artists film bombed at the box office when it was first released in 1981, helping to bankrupt that studio.

A director’s cut was released in 2012, however, and that version made the BBC’s list of best 100 American films -referring to it as a “modern masterpiece.”

Memorabilia from the film can be seen at the Wallace mining and depot museums.

Frivolous Sal (1925) The action scenes in the 1925 silent film “Frivolous Sal” were filmed in the mines around Wallace. Mine mills, tunnels, shafts and flumes were featured in this action “epic.”

Guido Bardelli, the Wild Bull of Burke

The Silver Valley has a long history of boxing champs — Herb Carlson, Norman and Leonard Walker and World Boxing Hall of Famer Guido “Young Firpo” Bardelli, “the Wild Bull From Burke.”

Bardelli — a miner with movie star looks — dominated boxing rings from California to Montana through the 1920s and 1930s.

He called himself Firpo, but reporters nicknamed him the “Wild Bull” for the way he charged his opponents at the sound of the first bell.

As reporters wrote of Bardelli in 1937, “There’s only one Young Firpo on Earth. No other battler, anywhere, fights as he does.”

Lana Turner

Wallace was the childhood home of Hollywood starlet Lana Turner. She was born in 1921 at the local Providence Hospital. Turner’s family had a home at 217 Bank Street, which still stands today.

The Turners left Wallace bound for San Fransisco when Lana was six years old.

Years later in Hollywood she was a famous Sweater Girl starring in several films and capturing scandalous headlines. She came back to her birthplace in 1942 to help sell war bonds. Turner memorabilia is on display at local Wallace museums.

allace is unique because of its fine collection of turn-of-thecentury buildings, some designed by nationally known architects. The entire town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and whole blocks in the business district have remained virtually intact for a hundred years or more.

Records occasionally conflict on construction dates; in these instances the most likely dates are listed.

Foundation. Wallace city officials signed papers accepting the grant as ashes of the 1910 fires were falling on the town. The building was completed in April 1911 at a cost of $15,300.

Constructed along a Renaissance Neoclassic design, it was restored to its original prominence in 1999 as funded by public donations given to the Wallace Public Library Foundation, Inc. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and stands as a symbol of the cultural heritage of our community. Recipient of the Orchid Award from the Idaho Preservation Council.

Three-story red brick building with an overhanging metal cornice at the top and a somewhat narrower one between the first and second floors. This is thought to be the site of the origin of the 1890 fire disaster that leveled the entire downtown Banard Bldg. district.

Historic Wallace Preservation 5. Kelly Bldg. (1891), 212 6th St. Society photo Believed to be the oldest wood-frame structure in the business district. This two-story hotel with a flat roof has a projecting wooden cornice supported by wooden brackets. A smaller cornice separates the first and second floors on the front. In past years, the Kelly Building also had “female boarding” accommodations upstairs and a hardware store on the ground floor. Currently the home of the Sixth Street Theatre.

6. Capt. John Mullan Statue. Located north end of 5th Street near the River.

Captain Mullan engineered this route through the Bitterroot Mountains. Work on the military road began in 1859 and was finished in 1862. A path 25-feet wide was cut through the forest. Many bridges were built across the South Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River. By 1866, the Mullan Road had been reconstructed, and the route would play a principle role in the Coeur d’Alene Mining District’s development.

Today, Interstate 90 and State Highway 95A follow the Mullan Trail.

7. Wallace Carnegie Library (1910-1911),River and 5th Sts. Its Renaissance Neoclassic design is found as a template on many small town Carnegie libraries. It is a portico live bay brick building with a low-pitched roof. Note the three-inch thick heavy entry doors adorned with prismatic leaded glass reproduced from the original designs recaptured during the restoration of 1999.

9. Sears MacDonald Bldg. (1905), 500 Cedar St. Built to be the Hope Hospital in 1905, this building later was the Morrow Retail Stores headquarters for most of the 20th Century. Morrow’s was established approximately in 1880. At one time there were Morrow’s in 17 north Idaho communities. The store carried everything from washing machines to groceries. It had quality clothing, cosmetics, shoes, jewelry, china and much more. It became the Brooks Hotel in 1992.

20. Gyde Taylor Bldg. 414 7th St. Built in 1916 21. Shoshone County Courthouse (1905), 700 Bank St. Constructed with locally produced concrete blocks containing mine tailings. The blocks are naturally soft, so over the years the courthouse outer walls have been covered with a stucco material.

This structure is a good example of neoclassical revival style. Designed by Stritesky and Sweatt of Spokane, it stands three stories on a raised foundation. It is distinguished by the two-story arched windows about the central entry with its balustraded balcony supported by medallions. Other features include the non-derivative fluted pilasters, denticulated cornice and high parapet. Legendary attorney Clarence Darrow defended accused murderer Steve Adams in this building in 1906. The trial was part of the overall proceedings involving the alleged conspiracy to assassinate Idaho’s former Gov. Frank Steunenberg in December 1905.

22. Hale Bldg(1925), 621 Bank St. 23. Idaho Press Bldg. (1890), 622 Bank St. This building begins what is believed to be the oldest block in the downtown district. It was originally a dry goods store. This is the borderline street for damages incurred by the great fires of 1910. This two-story brick building has a brick cornice, segmentally arched windows and a cast iron front. Currently the Idaho Press Gallery.

24. Coeur d’Alene Hardware Bldg. (1890), 612-622 Bank St. This building replaced the original wood frame structure owned by Holley, Mason, Marks and Company. It is designed to support six stories. The original appearance has been well preserved.

The second story has segmentally arched windows with a brick cornice above. An addition was added to the east in 1896. A second Otterson Building was constructed in 1900. The three structures were used as a single building by Coeur d’Alene

Hardware. It was both hardware outlet and main office for the foundry and manufacturing plant, which produced machinery that were shipped all over the U.S. and to several foreign countries.

Some of the double and single drum hoists produced there were used in the mining industry, and remain in use today. Currently the Pizza Factory, Price Tag Antiques and Wallace Brewing.

25. Heller Bldg (1898), 608 Bank St. (Currently the 1313 Club) This two-story brick building has two storefronts joined internally on the first floor. The cast iron pilasters remain. The second story retains its segmentally arched windows.

The building has housed a hotel upstairs, a bus depot, a barbershop and a cafe since it was rebuilt in 1898. The 1313 Club completed the most recent renovation in 1998.

26. Stevens Bldg. (1906) 609 Bank St. 27. Masonic Hall and Temple (1917), 605 Bank St. This is a two-story brick building with terra cotta and granite trim. Designed by G.I. Hubbell of Spokane. It is distinguished by the extensive use of terra cotta on the second story and a round-arched entrywith bracketed

curved and denticulated cornice.

28. Howes and King Bldg. (1890), 606 Bank St. Original structure erected in 1884 by owners Henry E. Howes and Horace G. King, early Wallace merchants. These two men ran a grocery business and general store out of a log cabin at this site. Bricks were manufactured in Silverton at a local brickyard.

29. Manheim Bldg. (1890), 604 Bank St. Erected soon after the 1890 fire. This two-story brick building has incurred many changes of the facade over the past century. In 1903, the doorway was in the center of the structure and a mortar and pestle adorned the sidewalk out front. During the great fires of 1910, the U.S. Forest Service had an office upstairs. Shortly after, the space became a pool hall and bar.

any of Wallace’s homes also have historical and architectural significance. Examples of Queen Anne bungalows, American foursquares and other styles are evident along Cedar, Pine and other streets. A separate brochure contains descriptions of historic homes and churches of Wallace; pick up a free copy at the Visitor’s Center or other information outlets. Set aside a half hour or so to enjoy a stroll through our tree-lined residential areas.

White and Bender Building across Sixth Street. The rear entrance features double doors with leaded glass, which are topped with a fan window pattern of elaborate leaded glass. Rossi Insurance is the oldest established business in the downtown historic district.

31. First National Bank Bldg. (1917), 419 6th St. This second renaissance revival, white terra cotta structure is distinguished by its engaged doric columns, round arched windows, pedimented entry, cornice and parapet. The building went through extensive restoration in the 1980s and received the Orchid Award from the Idaho Preservation Council in 1988. Built originally to house First National Bank of Wallace which was chartered in 1892.

32. Idaho Bldg. (1917), 413 6th St. The two-story red-brick building was constructed for Mrs. OtKelly terson and O.D. “Deke” Jones. It is distinguished Bldg. by its original mezzanine windows and the extenHistoric Wallace sive terra cotta trim. The Idaho Building housed Preservation Society Photo the Pennaluna Company from 1925 until 2015.

Currently Friends of the Coeur D’Alene Trails.

33. Gearon Bldg. (1927), 414 6th St. 34. DeLashmutt/McAulay Bldg.(1890), 424 6th St. The building was used as the first post office and county courthouse after the downtown district fires of 1890. The upper-story rooms were known as the “court rooms,” providing boarding.

Court proceedings were held here after the hijacking of the county records en route to Osburn from Murray until the present courthouse was built in 1906. Currently Smokehouse BBQ & Saloon.

35. White and Bender Bldg. (1890), 524 Bank St. One of the best Queen Anne commercial sites. The tower was originally built in accordance with the architect’s plans. White and Bender Company expanded from Murray in 1888. The company opened shop on the corner of Sixth and Bank while the fire of 1890 was still smoking — in a tented structure at first. White and Bender was a retail/wholesale mercantile well into the 1930s. The company then became a finance company and a leader in public financing of appliances and automobiles. The building includes some original White and Bender shelving. White and Bender were the first to install electric lights in Wallace. It held the Stewart Wallace Drug and Selig Water Company. Currently Johnson’s Gems.

36. Aulbach Bldg. (1891), 520 Bank St. Built by owner Adam Aulbach, editor-in-chief of the Wallace Free Press, who came over the hill from Murray. He operated a print shop in the back with power from Printer’s Creek. This creek is routed under the building, through Wallace, and drains into the South Fork of the Coeur d’Alene River.

37. Finch Bldg. (Circa 1898), 516 Bank.

38. Herrington Hotel (1898), 512 Bank 39. Elks Lodge Hall (circa 1905), 506 and 508 Bank St. Designed by Pruesse and Zittle of Spokane, this is the site of the first Elks Lodge in Wallace, instituted on Jan. 4, 1896. The new lodge was built on Cedar Street in 1924. Notice the elk hoof prints in the sidewalk outside the entrance to the former lodge.

40. Wallace Post Office (1905), 500 block of Bank St. A two-story brick building that is three bays wide.

Although remodeled, it retains its second story window and a cast iron pilaster on the first story. Currently North Idaho Trading Co. 41. Shoshone Bldg (1916), 416 and 420 5th St.. The second story is distinguished by round arched windows with polychromatic tiles in its spandrels. A bracketed cornice caps the building, and it has a cast stone entry.

The tiles were added later. First floor tenants include Sierra Silver Mine Tour, and Eureka Sally Gallery.

42. North Idaho Telephone Co. (1908), 517 and 517 1/2 Bank St. 43. Wallace District Mining Museum and Visitors Ctr. 509 Bank St. This building housed Rice’s Bakery until the early 1970s.
