FAA grounds jets with Tamarack winglets

By Cameron Rasmusson Reader Staff Local company Tamarack Aerospace suffered a setback with a recent order by the Federal Aviation Administration to ground all Cessna Citation 525 jets equipped with the company’s active winglet technology.

Designed to improve aircraft efficiency and save immense costs in fuel, the ATLAS winglet system promises many advantages to jets equipped with the technology. But company staffers are now working to address regulatory concerns that pilots may lose control of ATLAS-equipped aircraft.

The order follows a similar ruling from the European Aviation Safety Administration, which stated that “the active load alleviation system, when operational, deflects the Tamarack active control surfaces on the outboard wings. Recently, occurrences have been reported in which ATLAS appears to have malfunctioned causing upset events where, in some cases, the pilots had difficulty recovering the aircraft.”

According to Tamarack engineer Jacob Klinginsmith, the company has likely already addressed any design quirks that could potentially have caused problems. In fact, more than half of the fleet equipped with Tamarack winglets are unlikely to experience

“Tamarack has been making product improvements for as long as we’ve been making products,” Klinginsmith said.

The order from the FAA and the EASA follows the loss of a Citation 525 equipped with the winglet technology. An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board is looking into the

cause of the incident. Klinginsmith said one sign in Tamarack’s favor may be that the NTSB did not ask the company to participate in the investigation. He believes their cooperation would be required if officials were actively investigating the winglets.

In the meantime, Klinginsmith and other company officials are working with the FAA and EASA to lift the grounding order. They are hopeful that upgrading aircraft to the latest versions of their winglet technology will address concerns.

Litehouse Foods, one of Sandpoint’s most successful businesses, just got a little bigger.

The major producer of salad dressings, marinades, condiments and sauces announced last week it will acquire “substantially all the assets” of Sky Valley Foods effective June 1.

Known for its organic and natural dressings, condiments and more, Sky Valley Foods will add to Litehouse’s manufacturing capabilities on the East Coast and grow its standing in the organic food market.

“For some time Litehouse has been looking to offer products that could be sold in the center aisles of the grocery store. Before moving forward, we needed to ensure that the products we brought to market had the same high quality standards and reliance on real ingredients as our core Litehouse products,” said Kelly Prior, president of Litehouse, in a press release. “As we looked at Sky Valley Foods and their commitment to real food, real ingredients and better quality, we found great synergies.”

A centerpiece of the acquisition is Sky House Foods’ 132,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Danville, Va. It’s the latest stab by Litehouse officials in increasing the company’s ability to manufacture and distribute products throughout the country. Over the past several years, Litehouse has bolstered its manufacturing infrastructure in several cities, including the one located in north Sandpoint.

The acquisition also includes a new role for Sky Valley Foods founder Rachel Kruse, who is joining Litehouse to direct the future of its new Organicville and Sky Valley brands. Litehouse officials said her experience and proven success in the organic market will be an invaluable resource for the company as it grows its brands.

“I am very excited to join the Litehouse team and have the opportunity to continue driving the development of products that promote better eating and meet the consumer’s growing demand for better-for-you products,” said Kruse.

Railroad exhibit shines light on Sandpoint history

By Cameron Rasmusson Reader Staff The history of the railroad is a key part of the Sandpoint community.

It’s fitting, then, that the community played a key part in capturing its legacy with a new Bonner County History Museum exhibit. According to Heather Upton, museum curator, help from local railroad enthusiasts like Will Valentine and Bill Aitken helped bring the exhibit to life.

a lot of them, and they are passionate about it.”

The exhibit includes a recreation of an early-20th-century ticketing office, showing in detail the tight quarters and equipment used to keep train traffic rolling. It was a tall order to choose which artifacts to include in short space, but Upton is thrilled with how it came together.

“We had all these fabulous railway lanterns and signals, and we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be marvelous if we brought them back to life?’”

County delays call for EMS proposals

County secures $5 million grant for Trestle Creek Rd

By Lyndsie Kiebert Reader Staff The first few miles of Trestle Creek Road will see a $5 million makeover in coming years thanks to a Federal Lands Access Program grant.

Bonner County Commissioners gave the green light May 21 for Road and Bridge to enter an agreement with Western Federal Lands ensuring the county will provide a 7.34% grant match — about $370,000 — over the course of the project. That match can include in-kind labor and materials, said Road and Bridge Staff Engineer Matt Mulder. Western Federal Lands will be executing the bulk of the project.

Mulder said improvements to Trestle Creek Road under the FLAP grant will include “rebuilding the gravel base, paving with asphalt, stream bank stabilization, slope stabilization and stormwater capture and/or treatment.”

“The Federal Lands Access Program seeks to improve county roads that access federal lands and that are used by the public for that purpose,” Mulder said. “Trestle Creek is a prime example of that.”

Though the original grant application asked for three miles of asphalt, Mulder said the county has been working with Western Federal Lands — the agency responsible for administering the FLAP grant — to possibly extend that asphalt

to 4.1 miles. That extended stretch would go past the snowmobile parking on Trestle Creek Road and encompass the entire portion of roadway Bonner County is responsible for maintaining.

“A wider asphalt road will provide increased safety, especially during the winter when a lot of trucks and trailers are coming and going to the snowmobile parking,” Mulder said, adding that asphalt remains ice-free more often than gravel and paving a road cuts down on required long-term maintenance. “There’s also an environmental benefit of going to hard surface, as sediment discharge is reduced into the adjacent stream, which is considered critical fish habitat.”

Courtesy photo. work with Idaho Fish and Game to enhance that fish habitat and stabilize the stream bank during the FLAP project, and that work will count toward the county’s grant match.

The BOCC voted unanimously to provide the required grant match, and Commissioner Jeff Connolly lauded Mulder for his efforts on the project.

“Big thanks to Matt for bird-dogging this and making sure that it happens,” Connolly said.

Mulder said work on Trestle Creek Road likely won’t start until 2021 or 2022, as Western Federal Lands couldn’t begin the project design process until the grant match was confirmed.

Bonner County Commissioners are putting the brakes on restructuring the county’s Emergency Management Services.

Since news broke in December that the BOCC was considering a major shift in EMS operations — possibly to a nonprofit model — several members of the public, including many emergency services professionals, have voiced opposition and offered suggestions for improving the system.

During a public hearing on the matter Jan. 18, it seemed the BOCC intended to issue a request for proposals in the near future, allowing agencies outside the county to outline their ideal EMS plan.

Commissioner Dan McDonald told the Reader Tuesday that the county won’t be making that request any time soon, but instead giving recently appointed EMS Director Jeff Lindsey more time to make internal improvements to the department as it currently stands. “(Lindsey) and I agreed that he should get a bit more time to get EMS back up to where it should be,” McDonald said.

McDonald said the BOCC will likely hold off on the RFP until the

end of 2020.

“As I’ve said all along we are not in a big hurry here, so it seemed prudent to postpone the RFP process for now,” McDonald said.

The Fire Chief’s Association, which has been working to present a fire-based EMS proposal to the BOCC, expressed disappointment at the postponement.

“It’s disconcerting to work on a project through meetings and gathering information for over 400 hours in prep for an RFP that was promised by the commissioners,” said Mark Sauter, president of the Fire Chief’s Association. “We think we found a lot of good information and have a good plan, and now to be told we can sit back and wait — it’s discouraging.”

The commissioners are currently in the process of solidifying a resurrected EMS advisory committee. The original committee went ad-hoc in 2016 due to low attendance, but the recent talk of restructuring EMS prompted requests from the community that a new advisory body be appointed.

McDonald said the function of the advisory committee is “only to review operational details and not determine which direction the management of EMS would go.”

Chairs for Charity raises $146K

By Cameron Rasmusson Reader Staff A piece of Schweitzer history is paying off big-time for local nonprofits.

Announced by Schweitzer Mountain Resort at the end of the winter season, Chairs for Charity, which sold off double-seat chairs on the Snow Ghost lift due to be replaced, wrapped up with $146,000 heading to local nonprofits. Each chair sold for $2,000, a price Schweitzer fans were all too willing to pay for a relic of winter joys past.

“The response to the program

was overwhelming,” Schweitzer Family and Activities Director Dani Demmons said in a press release. “We knew we were asking a fairly substantial amount for each chair, but the community really rallied behind Chairs for Charity, and we couldn’t be more grateful.”

The proceeds from the program will be split between a variety of local nonprofits. Program managers selected the beneficiaries with an eye toward organizations that support land protection, the outdoors, animal services, education, the arts, youth sports, health care services and community support services.

Thanks to the enthusiastic response, the full allotment of chairs put up for sale have been locked down. A few chairs remain, the majority of which will also go to nonprofits as big-ticket auction or raffle items.

“Some of those chairs have yet to be auctioned off, so there are still chances for people to not only win a Snow Ghost chair but also to continue giving back financially to the local nonprofits,” Demmons said.

“We are so proud to have been an integral part of this wonderful and generous display of community support.”

Barbs • In his usual hyperbolic fashion, President Trump said last week that he was “the most transparent, and am, transparent president in history,” adding, “I think most of you would agree.” Cue a long laugh track. This from a president who has refused to release his tax returns, blocked legal subpoenas from the House to access his financial records, refused to be interviewed by the Mueller team, refused to release White House visitor logs. No modern president has held fewer press briefings as Trump’s, and the president repeatedly has denied Congressional oversight from the House. If President Trump thinks the definition of “transparent” means we have access to every one of his crazy thoughts and trolling remarks, then yes, that would be a correct statement. But come on, the “most transparent” in history? Ugh. • I know parking is an ongoing battle here in Sandpoint, but I’d like to toss in my two cents. I have an old motorcycle I like to ride during the summer months, so I was super happy to see the city earmarked some parking spots as “motorcycle parking only.” One is even right in front of my office, which is really cool. What isn’t cool is the fact that vehicles are constantly parking in these spots, as well as using them as “loading zones.” If you aren’t riding a motorcycle, please don’t park in a motorcycle spot. Otherwise that bike will be forced to take a vehicle spot. Thanks.

The tournament - dubbed “Get ‘Teed’ Off with Cancer Golf for a Cure” - will raise funds for Community Cancer Services in

5G: Is it for me...?

Dear Editor, I am electro-hypersensitive.

That means I feel pain, including headaches, mental fogginess, and abdominal cramping when I am exposed to electro-magnetic radiation from sources such as WiFi, smart phones and cell towers. Developing electro-hypersensitivity led to my discovery of how heavily saturated our modern lives are with EMR. Current background radiation is estimated to be a million times higher than it was 30 years ago.

These exposures to EMR are cumulative in their effects upon the body, as the 1950 - 1974 mortality study of 40,000 Korean War veterans shows. In the study it is apparent that even weak, shortterm exposures to EMR accumulate over the years to engender serious diseases. The cancer rate was one in 50 during the 1950s when the American Cancer Society formed.

Now it is one in two. This shows that neither the Federal Communication Commission guidelines nor the ACS’s advice are adequate to reverse this trend.

In 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer designated microwave frequencies as category 2B carcinogenic. The 2013 leading brain cancer researchers in Sweden, the Hardell Group, announced that EMR used in wireless devices meets all Bradford Hill criteria as a category 1A carcinogen on par with asbestos and nuclear radiation.

Telecommunication companies are now poised to roll out the fifth generation wireless antennas (5G) every 500 feet in U.S. cities. As with the 1996 Telecommunications Act, which made it illegal for cities to deny cell phone towers based on health or safety concerns, implementation of 5G would also be without our informed consent.

There have been no long- or shortterm safety studies regarding 5G other than those for millimeter-wave weapons used by the military, which are classified. The 5G lobby plans for millions of base station transmitters to be placed on Earth while 20,000 more satellites are put into space. Beam-formed 5G millimeter waves will be ten to hundreds of times stronger than that of our current 4G base stations. Despite the faster downloads, the Internet of Things and self-driving cars promised by the proponents of 5G, we must keep 5G from polluting our lives. All life will be affected if 5G moves forward as planned — bugs, birds, pets, as well as us — and it is not our right to harm them with this technology.

Dear Editor, Thanks to Tim Henney for the musical flashback (Reader, May 16). Not quite as senior as he, I was born when U.S. Forces took back the Kasserine Pass in WWII. When I was eight the Korean War began in 1950.

I was into my piano lessons and the three Bs, but my sister of 14 would bring home armloads of 45 RPM records and listened to AM radio constantly. The biggest thing culturally was the explosion in automobile design: from 1954 through ‘59, we couldn’t wait for the next model year. I lived in the San Fernando Valley. There was even a Mouseketeer in our high school. But within a few days of reading “Doowop Schmoo-wop,” songs I hadn’t thought of in decades came back. I remember the ballads, something that’s nearly disappeared from the charts these days. I might not remember the artist (no Googling) but I remember a few lyrics and titles: “If I give my heart to you” - “The One-Eyed Flying Purple People-Eater” - “The Tennessee Waltz” - “The Restless Wind” - “The Falling Leaves” - “Standing on the Corner Watching all the Girls Go By” - and “Hey Mama Tree-Top Tall Won’t You Kindly Turn Your Temper Down.”

There’s tons more.

Job Ideas Other Than Smelter...

Dear Editor, I attended the Pend Oreille County open comment meeting on the rezoning of public lands last Wednesday. The majority of those who commented opposed the rezoning as it would pave the way for the

proposed smelter. Those in favor had two points I heard repeated; the need for economic growth and the need to rezone public lands which had been purchased privately for residential use.

Speaking to the first point, the list below are the ideas for economic growth I heard mentioned at the meeting: 1. Kalispel Tribe seeking to unite for job creation 2. Peer-to-peer economics 3. New small businesses 4. Hemp 5. Human remains composting (yes! It’s real! Check it out: www. recompose.life) Clearly, there are ways to move forward in creating economic growth that don’t involve 600plus tons of greenhouse gases and hazardous air pollutants, including sulfur dioxide which stunts tree growth. Stunted tree growth, over time, would negatively impact our lumber industry, one of the longest running economic providers of this region (Read about it here: “Injury to Northwestern Forest Trees by Sulfur Dioxide from Smelters”: naldc.nal. usda.gov/download/CAT87201209/ PDF). It’s completely illogical to put the lumber industry in this region at risk, for maybe 150 jobs and a whole lot of nasty pollution.

Regarding the second point, the landowners who purchased privately for residential use from the county were told they had to wait until the one time a year that land can be rezoned to residential use. This is ridiculous. If public land is sold for residential purposes, then the re-designation needs to go hand in hand with the sale. To lump this along with industrial use rezoning (for the smelter) is absurd and a political tactic that, to say the least, is in poor taste.

A quote from Buckminster Fuller: “Pollution is nothing but the resources we are not harvesting. We allow them to disperse because we’ve been ignorant of their value.”

Let’s not be ignorant of the value our clean air, forest and waters have.

A recent sampling: Some 50,000 animals like cats, dogs and rabbits are used annually in lab testing, and are typically killed, even if healthy, after testing is over, the Independent Media Institute reports. A bipartisan proposal to Congress, the AFTER Act, would require the animals to either be adopted into loving homes or turned over to sanctuaries.

After a 10,000 year absence, earthworms are being found in the planet’s northern reaches. The New York Times says scientists are concerned since the worms’ activities release carbon dioxide, and their presence is a stark indicator of progressive warming.

The Rigged Justice report presented recently to Congress says under the current administration, enforcement of white collar crimes is down 41% as compared to 1998; penalty amounts have dropped more than 80% at the Department of Justice, the EPA and the Federal Communications Commission; there are 50% fewer violations being pursued at banks and financial firms; and, there are “massive declines” in the numbers of employees responsible for enforcing federal laws that protect workplace safety, the stability of financial markets, and air and water quality.

The report concluded that the current policies favor the rich and powerful.

Total relief: 2019 grads of Morehouse College were astounded to learn that billionaire Robert F. Smith will pay all their student debt.

Morehouse is a historically black all-male college. Student debt for blacks is typically more challenging, since blacks are 85% more likely to need to take on debt to attend college, Mother Jones reports.

Mortgage company Freddie Mac warns that rising waters from climate change could destroy billions of dollars of property value.

As well, owners of that property could decide to stop mortgage payments if their property values drop below what is owed. The First Street Foundation reports that 17 states have already seen property value losses of $16 billion between 2005 and 2017, all due to coastal flooding from sea level rises.

Superbugs now cause 700,000 deaths annually. Without significant action that number could jump to 10 million by 2050, says a new report from the U.N. Interagency

Coordination Group on Antimicrobial Resistance. Main causes for creation of superbugs: misuse and overuse of antimicrobials for people, animals and plants; poor sanitation and lack of clean water; poor waste management by healthcare, pharmaceutical and agricultural facilities, and transmission of resistant pathogens in the food supply. Solutions recommended in the report include ending use of growth-promoting antimicrobials in ag animals, better waste management and developing alternatives to anti-microbials.

At a recent State of Liberty fundraiser (for dividing Washington state), state Rep. Matt Shea’s legislative assistant stated that fellow supporters feel “it’s either going to be bloodshed or Liberty State,” numerous media shared. There was no noticeable evidence the audience disagreed.

Twelve pesticides that are toxic to bees will be pulled from the market, the EPA has announced. “This is an important first step,” the Center for Food Safety stated. There is still an unresolved court case that calls for the removal of about 100 pesticides that harm insects and birds.

Seventy-six retired generals, admirals, ambassadors and diplomats sent a letter to the Trump Administration strongly advising against war with Iran. Their reasons: it could pull the U.S. into “another armed conflict at immense financial, human and geopolitical cost.” Instead, they recommend engaging in crisis de-escalation. In 2012 Trump tweeted: “Now that Obama’s poll numbers are in a tailspin – watch for him to launch a strike in Libya or Iran. He’s desperate.”

Dehydrated mosquitoes bite more according to a study in Scientific Reports. Lack of water makes mosquitoes more inclined to dine on blood.

Former Missouri lawmaker Tom Coleman, a Republican, has stated in the Kansas City Star that, based on the redacted Mueller report, both the President and Vice President were illegitimately elected and impeachment is warranted. Coleman cited Donald Trump’s work with a foreign adversary to defraud voters, and Mike Pence’s role as an enabler.

Failure of the House to begin impeachment will result in voters thinking both political parties condone wrongdoing, Coleman stated.

By Emily Erickson Reader Columnist Fumbling with my blinker, I quickly signaled before victoriously turning into the freshly opened diagonal parking space in front of the Cedar Street Bridge. Scoring a diagonal parking space has become my downtown Sandpoint version of a row of cherries in a slot machine, and I could barely keep myself from cheering aloud.

Pushing my car door open, I walked into the sunshine and into the mild bustle of restaurant and shopgoers on an early summer weekday afternoon. With no agenda other than to enjoy being home after traveling, I meandered along storefronts casually acknowledging the window displays.

And then something began catching my eye, gaining significance with each one I passed.

It was a phenomenon similar to seeing white cars on the highway. You don’t notice a single white minivan, but as another, and another, and another go by, it becomes an unignorable pattern. But what I was noticing in storefront windows weren’t white cars. They were “now hiring” signs, and they were everywhere.

As summer approaches, many shops, restaurants, gas stations and other service-providing businesses in Sandpoint are looking for reliable help. Which begs the question: Where are all the workers?

I strode first into a gas station to investigate the “now hiring” epidemic and talked to a hiring manager who hadn’t had a day off in weeks. It had become her new normal. “We are down two

Emily Erickson. people heading into summer, and it’s like nobody wants to work,” she expressed, exasperated.

But having been in the Sandpoint service industry, where most of my peers were working two or three jobs and gearing up for the summer-expected 50- to 60-hour work weeks, I was unsatisfied with the theory of general unwillingness to work being the single cause of staffing strife. So I continued my investigation.

I entered a retail shop next, speaking with the owner about her experience with finding enough workers to fill their summer schedule. “It’s been like this for years,” she explained, “but I’m wondering if high schoolers just don’t work any more.” She talked about the decline in the past few years in finding summertime help from younger employees and discussed the problem with college-aged kids needing to leave during peak tourism weeks to go back to school.

Continuing to dig, I made my way into a restaurant looking for additional service staff to increase their support for the tidal wave of summer business soon to crash onto their outdoor

patios. “It’s not like there isn’t money to be made,” a server described. “It’s just everyone I know is already working somewhere else.”

So there are good jobs available, enough even to choose from, there is money to be made, and nobody is applying. What gives?

Well, I think there are a few reasons.

First, there aren’t enough young people in the community to meet the high demand for service positions, especially in the summertime. Whether we like it or not, Sandpoint in the summer months operates at a level consistent with resort-town tourism, without the extra support tourist towns typically import.

Next, even if we were successful in bringing in people specifically to work the peak seasons, they’d have nowhere to live.

Another strategy of tourist towns often take is for the restaurants, the city, and the tour operators to provide employee housing with cheap rent and the camaraderie and quality of housing consistent with summer camp.

Finally, regarding the nontipped positions, the wages are not competitive with other summertime working destinations, like those in Washington that start at $10 an hour, and when combined with the cost of living in and around Sandpoint, are not a viable option for most people outside of high school.

Completing my staffing reconnaissance, I visited a bar in town without a “now hiring” sign to inquire about what they were doing right. This establishment has had very little employee turnover, and has hired additional staff at a fraction of the rate of the rest of the town has.

The general manager suggested, “I think the nature of a bar is a bit different. I’m able to give my employees freedom and authority to discuss what’s working well in their roles and what isn’t, and to help them make more money along the way.” His employees are older and are professionals in their positions, and he strives to keep them happy and creative, assisting in maintaining high tips and consistent wages.

As I made my way back to my perfect diagonal parking

spot, I locked eyes with an employee inside a shop with another hopeful “now hiring” sign on the door and smiled my best “hang in there, friend” smile.

Who knows what the problem is, but one thing’s for certain.

It’s going to be one heck of a summer.

National Trails Day benefits popular local trails

It’s time for a little spring cleaning on local trails, and National Trails Day, June 1, is the ideal time. This June 1 the Idaho Trails Association will have volunteers do maintenance work on the Mickinnick Trail, located on the outskirts of Sandpoint in the Idaho Panhandle National Forest.

Volunteers will clean out water bars and diversion ditches, remove logs that are in the trail, cut back brush off the entire trail, and other general chores.

The Mickinnick Trail is the focus every year on National Trails Day to commemorate that event and the trail itself, according to Tom Dabrowski, president of the state-wide trail association.

“The Mickinnick is a beautiful trail right on the edge of town and is very popular,” Dabrowski said. “I’ve been on it during every month of the year and have never been alone.

ITA will be doing the maintenance work on June 1 to help make this very popular trail more enjoyable for the hikers who come here.”

Nicky and Mick Pleass donated 160 acres at the top of Greenhorn Mountain to the USFS in 1993. They specified it was to be used for a hiking trail. In 2003, Nicky Pleass recruited her hiking partner Jan Griffitts to help make it a reality. Griffitts tirelessly advocated for an agreement with the city of Sandpoint, Bonner County, the Idaho Panhandle National Forest and Bureau of Land Management to build a trail.

In the meantime, the two women hiked the mountain numerous times and designed a trail to the top of Greenhorn Mountain west of Sandpoint above the Bonner County Fairgrounds, Griffitts said.

constructed the trail. The only trees that were removed were those considered dangerous.

The Mickinnick Trail, named for the previous landowners and the kinnikinnick native plant which is abundant on the mountain, was dedicated in 2005.

The trail, which has several benches along its near-vertical four miles, is enjoyed by all ages.

“One winter, I was snowshoeing with others and we came across a cougar relaxing on the rock outcropping (probably enjoying the view, too),” Griffitts said. “We now call that Cougar Rock. He took off and of course we didn’t follow.”

The first 1.5 miles of the trail is the steepest and rockiest. After that it becomes easier and meanders through the open forest, rock outcroppings, grassy and mossy meadows, wildflowers, native plants, old growth trees, huckleberry patch and several small seasonal streams. The trek to the 4,300-foot top is well worth the effort, with commanding views of Lake Pend Oreille, the Cabinet Mountains, Monarch Mountains, Pend Oreille River, Sandpoint and the Long Bridge.

The trail, which climbs 2,150 feet in elevation, was designed so that hikers have a view every few minutes. Hikers could also see some wildlife that frequents the area, including bears (black and grizzly), moose, elk, deer, cougar, bobcat, coyote, rabbit, grouse, chipmunks, eagles, hawks, osprey and numerous other birds throughout the year.

The trailhead, which has parking and a vault toilet, is located off Woodland Drive on city of Sandpoint property, less than a mile south of Schweitzer Mountain Road. The city maintains the trailhead, while volunteers maintain the trail itself.

Dabrowski pointed out that ITA welcomes volunteers of all ages and abilities.

Photo courtesy Jay Mock. he said. “We need folks to sign up and come out and help maintain our hiking trails. Like all of our public lands and facilities, the Mickinnick Trail belongs to all of us and we need to help keep it in good shape.”

Volunteers will use hand tools provided by the ITA to do light work. Everyone should bring work gloves, sturdy shoes, lunch, and water. ITA asks that volunteers sign up ahead of time on the ITA website at www.IdahoTrailsAssociation.org.

Other National Trails Day events: June 1: The Basin Trail Festival – kicks off at 9 a.m. at the Schweitzer Mountain Road roundabout. It is the trailhead for the Lower Basin Trails, beloved by both downhill and cross-country mountain bikers. An open letter to the decision makers of the Sagle Asphalt Plant

By Jonna Plante Reader Contributor This is an open letter to Linscott Gravel, Interstate Concrete and Asphalt, Bonner County Planning & Zoning and Bonner County Commissioners: Our group is tired of the corruption displayed by the decisions being made on behalf of the citizens in the Sagle area.

The zone changed in April and May of 2018, allowing asphalt plant to be allowed in rural, agricultural and forest lands on an active gravel pit, was illegally accomplished by claiming to the public, as per your public notice, that the hearings were to discuss gravel pits in industrial zones. This is not what was discussed at the hearings! Instead asphalt plants were added to be allowed in rural, agricultural and forest lands on an active gravel plant. This did not allow people in areas of rural, agricultural and forest lands to come and give their concern and you denied them their rights to tell you they want asphalt plants to stay in industrial areas where asphalt plants should be placed, not next to their homes.

Then the Bonner County Planning Department allowed nonconforming land use property, Linscott Gravel, to put in an application to expand their operation to ADD an asphalt plant. The application should have been denied per the Bonner County Comprehensive Plan

since Linscott has already grown beyond what was allowed per the Comp Plan. Linscott Sand and Gravel was grandfathered in 1981 where the gravel pit was 18 acres, and the Comp Plan says it can grow 10% without a permit and up to 50%, or 36 acres, with a permit. Linscott gravel has illegally expanded their gravel pit to over 100 acres with no permit. Also against the law is Linscott has leased out land to Interstate Asphalt to surface mine 45 acres and it does not have a permit either. Both Linscott Gravel and Interstate Asphalt are illegally surface mining and digging up aggregate and sand and selling it without permits, something no one else could do without a permit, yet everyone in the county is allowing it to continue. Why? No one else could get away with surface mining without permits!

Then the Bonner County Planning Commissioners decided in a split decision to agree to this asphalt plant, shocking the community. Then the County Commissioners voted unanimously for it, not following their own laws, the state of Idaho laws, or the 99.99 percent of the people at the hearing not wanting the move from Sandpoint to Sagle, the same ones who didn’t want it moved in 1995 and in 2015 where the previous County Commissioners voted against the move claiming it was against the comp plan.

We spoke with Gary Allen, Givens Pursley Law Offices, who wrote the “Idaho Land Use” handbook to confirm our legal findings and again,

you ignored the laws, and voted against us all.

We ask for you to follow the laws of Bonner County Comprehensive Plan, and Idaho state laws, and to shut down Linscott!

We will always fight to protect the community from changes that will drop our property values and destroy our property rights! We have the right to enjoy our property free from sounds, smells, and contamination.

We want our life to continue how it’s been forever - Quiet rural living, dark night quiet skies, clean air, and perfect water. It includes the smells of nature with wildlife surrounding us. We don’t want you risking our aquifer by placing an asphalt plant right over our Sagle aquifer which supplies homes with water, nor do we want water draining off your asphalt plant down to the river, less than a half mile downhill, and into the fish hatchery.

In case you haven’t figured it out, we are not going away or stopping our battle against having an asphalt plant in Sagle. We will never give up battling for the changes you are pushing on our community, which have happened illegally.

We will commit whatever time, resources, blood, sweat and tears necessary. Whatever it takes. However long it takes. This is our community. We aren’t going anywhere. Our fight will never end, and we will never give up.

Shut Linscott Gravel down, and stop the move by Interstate from Sandpoint to Sagle!

personal computers - part 1

By Brenden Bobby Reader Columnist Like it or not, personal computers, or PCs, are a vital part of our daily lives. They perform all sorts of tasks, from allowing us to overshare stupid memes with family members two time zones away (I get it, Kermit is being a smarmy jerk) to living out alternate realities that let us carve through aliens like Aunt Linda carves through Thanksgiving turkey. Ever wonder about how that funny box full of circuits and electricity creates such things?

It’s a lot of complicated jargon and acronyms, but I’ll do my best to describe what’s going on in a fun and understandable way.

Note: Most of what I will be discussing will be about high-end gaming computers, but they work the same as your run-of-the-mill computer, just on steroids.

Motherboards: How do they work? Think of the motherboard as your computer’s spinal cord. It connects all of the vital components of your computer together and lets them communicate. In the early days of computers, the earliest form of motherboards were essentially multiple circuit boards connected together by copper wiring, socketed into a backplane. As technology improved, developers were able to condense these into a single printed circuit board that had slots for installing vital components. Like all components in a computer, the motherboard requires power, which is supplied from the power source, the big brick-looking 12 /

thing generally at the top or bottom on the rear of the computer where you plug in the cord.

Depending on the function of your computer, the power source may require different wattage. Most standard computers only need a maximum of 500 watts of power, which they rarely use at the fullest. A pretty good gaming computer will be comfortable with 750 watts (though this requirement is going down), and a freaking beast that runs like a microwave can use over 1,000 watts.

All of that power creates a lot of heat, and if you don’t have a way to get rid of that heat, bad things happen to your components, and then your computer can’t run. It’s like if your foot catches on fire — you won’t be able to walk on that foot anymore, would you?

The primary way heat is transferred from the inside of a computer to the outside is through fans. Depending on your computer’s needs, you may need several fans that pull hot air out of your computer and keep the internal temperature steady enough to not melt your circuits.

If your computer is struggling to keep the temperature down inside, you can upgrade to a liquid cooling system.

This sounds counter-intuitive, I mean, you don’t want water around your delicate electronic components, but it’s actually a tried-and-true method. It’s an enclosed system that uses pipes filled with water or a cooling solution that run near vital heat-generating components. The heat transfers to the cooler surface (in this case, the enclosed water), which is then

pumped to a radiator, just like the one at the front of your car.

This radiator is adjacent to a major fan which pushes cool air over the radiator to cool the water, which is then cycled back to the hotter parts of the machine.

If you’re just using Facebook or writing a silly science article, water cooling isn’t practical, but if you’re doing film development or running cutting-edge games to their maximum potential, liquid cooling is great for improving the longevity of your high-end components.

One of these components most susceptible to heat is your graphics-processing unit, often called a video card. I could do a long, confusing article of acronyms and numbers revolving around video cards, but that would bore everyone outside of die-hard gamer junkies like myself. A GPU performs all of the calculations fed to it to create the shiny graphics you see in a game. The beefier the card’s specs, the better the graphics it will present.

That’s an oversimplification, because one person’s Van Gogh is another person’s crayon scribble when it comes to computer graphics.

A GPU does more than bring pixels onto your screen. Generally, it’s figuring out the physics of a three-dimensional world, like a knight falling from a battlement while six dozen arrows fly past him and horses are running wild in the courtyard. While it’s figuring all of that out and presenting it in real-time, it’s also calculating how to make explosion effects or one of the most tricky visual effects in gaming: light diffusion. Think about when you

walk out from a shadow, and the sun is like, “Boom, I’m here and you’re blind.” A computer trying to replicate that effect takes a tremendous amount of resources. If you have a high-end monitor, this means the video card is figuring out how to present 497,664,000 pixels per second without missing a beat, generally for several hours uninterrupted.

Now that I’ve word-vomited a bunch of numbers that are

completely trivial for you, you must be SUPER stoked for next week’s article, when we start talking about the real engine in your wheelless Corvette.

To those of you that haven’t turned the page in boredom or annoyance, I commend you, and grant you the Invisible Taco Award! Place it gently upon your mantle, and display it proudly for all the world to not-see.

Outdoor Experience

Alright, alright—Outdoor Experience is hardly a new business. In fact, it’s one of the more venerable downtown businesses in Sandpoint. But it is moving on to its next chapter under new ownership. And while customers can expect the same great shopping experience, new owner Jennifer Curto has a few ideas of how to expand and enhance business offerings for outdoor lovers.

“We’re pretty excited,” said previous owner Kevin Nye. “I’m most excited about the prospect of what Jenny can bring to the business and what she can add to it, because she’s such a vibrant and intelligent young woman. It will continue to be a good asset for the downtown community.”

Nye can be confident in Curto’s abilities — after all, he’s known her for a while. They became acquainted when Curto joined the same running group as his wife. One day, he casually asked her whether she’d eventually like to take over an outdoor supply store.

Turns out the idea stuck in her head, because that off-hand remark gradually evolved into a full-fledged business deal.

“I think the number-one first priority is to honor the 33 years of Outdoor Experience — the first priority is to maintain what these guys created,” Curto said. “ But I also see some fun areas to expand, including the running category and the backpacking category.”

Community is the name of the game for Outdoor Experience, which specializes in clothes, equipment and goods for hiking, camping, kayaking, cross-country skiing, climbing and just about every other good time to be had in North Idaho nature. The store originally started out in the 1970s as Outdoor Connection, was purchased by Nye and his business partner in the 1980s and has been a downtown fixture ever since.

all about helping clients choose a wardorbe from Cabi’s specialized line of clothes, which can happen one-on-one or through popular “trunk shows.” These shows see women inviting their closest friends for a social occasion that involves drinks and appetizers, pleasant conversation and, most importantly, trying on new clothes. It’s a different way to find new clothing, but Foro says it’s not only more fun — it’s also an entry point to a style trend that has been spreading through word of mouth over the years.

“Cabi has good quality, it lasts a long time and the colors are amazing,” said Bizarre Bazaar co-manager Cherie Warber, who has stocked her fair share of Cabi clothing over the years.

Cabi isn’t just a way to rediscover the joy in finding new clothes, Foro said. It’s almost a way to reorganize an entire life from the closet on up.

“It’s a way of putting together your wardrobe and never having a moment where you don’t know what to wear,” she said. “You could virtually get dressed in the dark.”

How to poison your mother-in-law

By Scott Taylor Reader Columnist If we are to believe what much of the media – mainstream, social, alt, Russian troll – tells us, narrow-mindedness and intolerance have become the norm in much of our culture. Our willingness and ability to consider someone else’s point of view or open our minds to new or different ideas has gone the way of two-dollar beers and good country music. While “good country music” may seem like an oxymoron (whud you call me?!), just like an old Glen Campbell tune we can find people willing to treat us with kindness, civility and respect if we extend the same to them.

In 1970 Glen Campbell (look him up young ‘uns; he wasn’t just a granite-jawed pretty boy crooning songs about rhinestone cowboys and Wichita linemen; he was a very accomplished studio musician as well) had a hit song called “Try A Little Kindness” (not written by him) that urged “...if you try a little kindness then you’ll overlook the blindness of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets...”

There’s a story in Buddhist philosophy that illustrates how “killing them with kindness” can actually benefit both sides of a conflict: A young woman married and moved into a house with her husband and his mother. It soon became clear that the mother-in-law would be very difficult to get along with. She criticized the young woman constantly, said mean things to her, and ordered her to perform all the unpleasant tasks in the home. The wife complained and fought back with her mother-in-law, to no avail. The situation became unbearable to the young bride, so she went to the village medicine man and, explaining her predicament, asked him for a concoction she could use to poison her mother-in-law. The medicine man said he could help her, but for the plan to work she would have to follow his instructions precisely.

He told her, “To avoid suspicion of who killed her, I’m giving you a weak 16 /

mixture of poison. Put a little in her food every other day. Be patient; it will take weeks before enough poison builds up to kill her. In the meantime you must treat her with kindness and respect, and obey her commands so she won’t suspect you’re up to anything.” She agreed and took the potion home.

The bride followed the instructions carefully, preparing delicious meals and adding small amounts of poison to the mother-in-law’s portions. She also treated the old woman with the utmost respect and kindness, complimenting and caring for her, and dutifully obeying her wishes. After a while she noticed that the older woman had begun treating her better too, complimenting her appearance and doing nice things for her. They were actually beginning to like each other. The bride began to have doubts about poisoning her mother-in-law. She went back to the medicine man and said, “I need something to counteract the poison!

My mother-in-law has become agreeable, and we’re getting along fine with each other. I don’t want to kill her!”

The old man said, “You don’t need an antidote. What I gave you was only a mixture of herbs and vitamins, not poison. All you needed to do was show your mother-in-law some kindness, and she returned the gesture.”

If we want kindness, respect, and tolerance (things that increase our happiness) extended to us, we must extend it to others, no matter who they are. And if we want to find good country music today... well, good luck. But I do know where I can find a two-dollar beer! Be happy!

Chamber welcomes Davis Grocery & Mercantile

By Reader Staff The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce welcomed Davis Grocery & Mercantile with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday, May 15.

Located in Hope, Davis Grocery & Mercantile offers a wide variety of groceries, including produce, non-food necessities, beer and a wine selection to be admired. They also have a bakery and coffee shop offering baked goods, soups, and sandwiches. The variety they offer allows Hope area residents as well as tourists to shop or pick-up last-minute items without driving into Sandpoint and Ponderay. With 15 years of grocery experience, owner Ross Davis has been able to negotiate with vendors to keep the prices competitive with area grocery stores.

With summer fast approaching, the owners are excited to bring events and activities into the store. They have live music regularly and have a wine tasting with Pend d’Oreille Winery planned for next month.

Community members hold regular meetings in their coffee shop as well. Davis can also special-order items for customers if needed.

This year, 13 volunteers were honored for reaching volunteer hour milestones.

Volunteer Council Chairperson Margo Johnson was honored for volunteering 8,000 hours at BGH over 20 years. Faye Moore was honored for volunteering 5,000 hours over 29 years and Sol Pusey was honored for volunteering 3,500 hours over seven years.

Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeepers will be hosting renowned environmental advocate Maya K. van Rossum Tuesday, June 4, at Eichardt’s Pub from 5:30-7 p.m.

“We all depend upon clean water, clean air and a healthy environment to support and sustain our lives,” the Waterkeepers wrote in a statement. “Doesn’t it seem appropriate that they should be protected with the same legal strength that we protect the other rights we hold dear?”

Van Rossum will seek to discuss and inspire a new tool for environmental preservation and protection from a policy as well as a legal perspective.

In van Rossum’s new book “The Green Amendment,” she lays out an inspiring new agenda for environmental advocacy, one that will empower people, level the playing field and provide real hope for communities everywhere.

Currently, only two states — Pennsylvania and Montana — recognize and protect their states’ natural resources with a bill of rights in their state constitution.

Van Rossum’s book provides a legal framework for change — changing the 50 states and the federal constitution to include the right to clean air and water for all citizens.

Champion racer to speak at CHAFE 150 dinner

CHAFE 150 has been recognized for years as a world-class bicycle race. This year, it’s getting the world-class athlete to match.

Tristen Chernove, a Paralympics gold medalist, three-time world champion rider and Canadian para-cyclist of the year, is the guest of honor at this year’s CAFE 150 lineup of events and will speak at the pre-race dinner on Friday, June 14. Between the dinner, the race and the thousands of dollars raised for local schools, it all adds up to a CHAFE 150 for the books.

If CHAFE riders are looking for a little pre-ride inspiration, they’ll find a ready supply in Chernove’s talk. He plans to go over his training regimen, his athletic history and the experience of competing at the highest level of his sport. But he’ll also detail his battle with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a neurological condition that afflicts the nerves communicating brain and spinal activity to the muscles. Between the special presentation by Chernove and what looks to be strong attendance, the 2019 ride may well go down as a historic year for CHAFE. In April, the organization announced that sign-ups for the ride were already outpacing previous years. Part of that may be the acclaim CHAFE 150 has generated over the years. In 2018, Bicycling Magazine named it the number-three charity ride in the U.S., thanks in no small part to the beautiful North Idaho vistas that keep riders pedaling forward.

It doesn’t hurt that organizers keep expanding CHAFE offerings to provide the ideal challenge and length for all skill levels. New this year is the 100-mile century route, adding another long-distance option for endurance riders. Human heart shines in ‘Animation Show’

Animation can tap into something within the human spirit that other mediums struggle to reach.

For proof, look no further than the “Animation Show of Shows.” The annual compilation showcasing the best animated shorts of the year is back this weekend for another run at the Panida Theater, and it promises to awaken a little wonder in you.

“Animation is such a flexible and open-ended medium that it lends itself to exploring the innumerable aspects of what it means to be human,” said show founder and curator Ron Diamond.

“And this year’s program, as much as any of our past presentations, really illuminates human strengths and foibles, and the bonds that unite us across cultures and generations.”

If this year’s show celebrates one

aspect of animation, it’s the broad range of subjects and tones that the medium can capture. Hikari Toriumi explores deeply human themes of family in decidedly unhuman characters — specifically a young polar beer preparing to leave home — in “Polaris.” Veronica Solomon’s “Love Me, Fear Me,” meanwhile, captures the dark side of a deceptive, toxic relationship through claymation.

And computer animation gets its due in “The Green Bird,” which uses classic comedy to tell an endearing story.

Those are just a few of the 15 shorts that altogether run 98 minutes and range from under a minute to a quarter-hour in length. “The Animation Show of Shows” has a track record of predicting future Oscar-winning shorts, and sure enough, four of the 15 films in the collection have received attention from the Academy Awards.

I’ve always been fascinated by how something gets its name.

People have been asking questions about the origins of words since the time of the Greek philosophers. Why is a nose called a nose? Why not call it a fluegenbooger or a reynopsis?

When it comes to languages, etymologists (those who study the origins of words, not entomologists, who study insects) can develop language trees that determining how a specific word came to be.

English is a Germanic language, but its lexifier (or the source of its vocabulary) is Latin. That’s why there are similar sounding words in Spanish, Italian, French and Portuguese.

If you take English back up the language tree it goes to Middle English, Old English, West Germanic and Germanic, which ultimately came from the one original source the majority of languages came from known as the Proto Indo European. Because of all these branches on the language tree, the version of a word we use today is often quite different from its original form.

Take the word “apron.” The latin word is “mappa,” the Old French term is “naperon” and the Old English term was “napron.” Because writing in Old English times wasn’t as common as speaking, when Old English speakers referred to “a napron,” they mistakenly believed the speaker was saying, “an apron,” and the term stuck.

Every word in the English word has a complex and interesting history behind its origins. But the same is not necessarily true with placenames. Think of how many streets in America (named after the Italian cartographer Amerigo Vespucci, who first set forth the concept that lands that Columbus sailed to in 1492 were actually part of a separate conti22 /

dropped). It’s curious that Bonner County was named as such, since Bonner only spent a few months in the area before leaving John Walton to operate the ferry.

Richard Fry bought the ferry and trading post in 1875 and applied for the first U.S. Post Office. The town was originally called Fry until 1899 when it was incorporated and the name changed to Bonner’s Ferry, and later Bonners Ferry.

This got me thinking: How did our local placenames come to be?

Over the next few issues, I’ll delve into the history of why we call our everyday towns, rivers, creeks and mountains what they are called.

This week, we’ll start with the basics.

Pend d’Oreille Translated roughly as “hangs from ear,” or “ear pendant,” Pend d’Oreille was the name early French colonists and traders gave the tribe of Native Americans (now known as the Kalispel Tribe) who were indigenous to the Northwest Plateau. They were named as such because of the large shell earrings they wore. Some erroneously believed the lake was named as such because it is shaped as an ear when viewed from above. There are various spellings of Pend d’Oreille used today, most dropping the lower case “d” from usage. I won’t even go into the phonetic abomination that the town of Ponderay decided to use.

Sandpoint Fur trader and explorer David Thompson is responsible for our town’s name because he mentioned a “point of sand” in his 1809 journal, referring to the site in which the town sits today. This settlement, originally called “Pend d’Oreille,” predated the Northern Pacific Railroad by a couple of years. Early pioneer Robert Weeks opened a general store beside Sand Creek in 1880 after he read a railroad survey that showed this location as a favorable location for future businesses. The community of Venton actually pre-dated Sandpoint. It was located on the south end of the Long Bridge (before the bridge was built) where a railroad construction camp was located.

The tracks could go no further across the lake until a bridge was built. After the first Long Bridge was built in 1904, the Venton post office was moved across to the site of Pend d’Oreille and the name Sandpoint was used.

Clark Fork The town east of Sandpoint took its name from the river which flows past it. Explorer William

Clark (of Lewis and Clark) first saw the mouth of this river in July 1806 as it forked off from the Yellowstone River. Clark noted that the river’s mouth would make a good place for a fort and named the river Clark’s Fork. Over the years, it has been spelled a few different ways: Clark’s Fork, Clarksfork and finally Clark Fork as it is spelled today.

Bonner In 1863, Edward L. Bonner, along with his cousin Richard Eddy and friend John Walton, joined thousands of prospectors who flooded into the area after large amounts of gold were discovered in the East Kootenais of British Columbia. The three men were headed north to the gold strikes along the Wildhorse Trail, but when they arrived at the Kootenai River crossing (at the modern day site of Bonners Ferry), Bonner realized it was an excellent place to build a ferry. Bonner bought the land on both sides of the river from the Kootenai Chief Abraham, and the location would become known as Bonner’s Ferry (the apostrophe has since been

Priest River / Priest Lake The name “Priest” is believed to have come from the Kalispel word “Kaniksu,” which means “Black Robe,” the name the Natives gave to the Jesuit missionary priests who worked among them. Some old maps refer to Priest Lake as “Kaniksu Lake.”

Father Pierre-Jean De Sonef first named it Lake Roothaan in honor of John Roothaan, a fellow priest.

It wasn’t until the building of the Great Northern Railroad in 1890 that it was renamed permanently as “Priest Lake.” There is a peak named Mount Roothaan near Chimney Rock that was also named in honor of John Roothaan.

Priest River saw an influx of Italian immigrants who moved into the area to hew ties for the Great Northern Railroad around 1892.

The immigrants stayed in the area after construction was completed.

Their settlement was known as the Italian Settlement, and later it was called “Valencia,” until it was found there was another town in Idaho named Valentia, so the name was changed permanently to Priest River. It was known as “Little Italy” as late as the 1950s.

An ode to beer M

any of the more interesting episodes in my life have been sponsored by beer.

There was the performance of 90210-themed haiku at a prominent open mic night and the time I stroked musician Jack Johnson’s arm and told him he was “pretty.” There was the time I found my way home in London on a night I lost my wallet, managing to trade a pack of smokes for a cab ride from a non-English-speaking driver (never mind that I don’t smoke, have never bought cigarettes, and don’t speak Somali). And, of course, there are many other stories I can’t mention for fear that you or my mother-in-law might read them.

For all the stories, I have beer to thank. For my survival, I can thank luck.

As I’ve gotten older, beer still plays a part.

It helped my now-husband and I get over our anxieties and introversions on our first awkward date. It might actually be responsible for the existence of our daughter, and it has since helped us survive teething and tantrums. It has facilitated the forging of new friendships, and it is a way of thanking employees after a hard day’s work.

Beer, at this point in my life, is fellowship, connection, communion. It is a breaching of the walls that divide us — walls that serve to hide our fears and feelings — making us more visible and vulnerable. Making us more comfortable with that vulnerability.

Beer, for me, was once a story generator.

Now it is a story-bridger.

Honestly, I’m probably placing more emphasis on the beauties of beer than is deserved.

I blame it on wistfulness. You see, I can’t drink beer right now (which is another story, one about inflammation and dietary elimination that I promise not to write because … ugh, so lame), and it’s much harder than I anticipated.

The difficulty doesn’t come so much from the cravings. I mean, yes, I miss the taste of beer, but that missing is manageable. The real difficulty is in all the associations I — and our culture — have with the beverage.

Beer is a punctuation mark. It is the period I put at the end of the workday before I start the new paragraph that is the evening routine. It is the exclamation point I place after reaching milestones and accomplishing dreams. It is the question mark I use when difficult subject matter must be addressed, and the queries have to be lured out of dark, hidden places. Sometimes it is the comma that slows life down to a manageable speed, forcing me to sit, to relax, to talk.

Without beer, how do I define these feelings, sentences and spaces?

Beer is also about identity for me. Some-

where along the way, I received enough positive reinforcement regarding my preference for PBRs over blue-hued cocktails to wear the affinity as an emblem: of being accessible, grounded, low-maintenance. Just toss me a beer, thank you; I need nothing more to be happy and present with you.

In my 20s, as I began to inhabit a space on the political spectrum decidedly left of my father — and philosophies decidedly “out-there” to his way of thinking — beer was always our equalizer. We might not have understood each other’s values, but we could easily share space over pint glasses, finding our way back to familial embrace.

How is it that beer is imbued with such power? More so than coffee or even cocktails, it is communion that is somehow both casual and potent.

No matter how highfalutin I get with things like meditation retreats and fancy words and Spiral Dynamics, if I can still sit down with you over beers, then I am still tethered to this earth. I am still humble. I am still a fun and easy person to be around.

Without beer, how do I prove to you my accessibility?

There is also the issue of beer’s centrality to evening entertainment. Here in Sandpoint, we have two lovely new breweries, Matchwood and Utara, whose spaces are both cozy and vibrant. And there are the standbys of Eichardt’s, MickDuff’s and Idaho Pour Authority that I have always enjoyed. These are my preferred downtown hangouts, but hanging out at Eichardt’s with a hot tea in hand just ain’t the same. I find myself gazing longingly at the tap handles, the candy store that this kid can no longer frequent.

When I look at Sandpoint’s calendar of events each week, the offerings are usually,

Live Music at <insert drinking establishment here> repeated a dozen times over. Invites to potlucks typically end with a call to BYOB. Impromptu weekend gatherings tend to involve a shared drink while the kids play.

We used to joke that, for its mellowing effects, PBR should stand for “Parenting Better Right-now.” Meanwhile, being the parent with a scotch in hand at two o’clock on a Sunday doesn’t speak to parenting better. Not at all.

I should buy stock in La Croix for all the sparkling water I have consumed in recent months. It comes in a can and is fizzy — an approximation of beer — but it is a weak punctuation mark, identity conveyor, connection maker and entertainer.

I expected this dietary change to be an adjustment, not an existential crisis. The fact that I am flirting with the latter reaction points to my heretofore unexamined relationship with alcohol. Though my college drinking days are a distant and hazy memory (thank goodness), perhaps my continued affinity for beer is not a wholly healthy one. Perhaps I rely on it too often to carry me through social encounters, to open me up, to mellow me out. Perhaps there are better ways to convey humility and receptivity than by pounding a pilsner. Perhaps I should be shamelessly into vipassana and poetry and Integral Theory without feeling the need to apologize or qualify my interest via the consumption of whatever cold one is on hand.

Or maybe there is absolutely nothing wrong with me, and it’s just that beer is really, really, really good. On many levels. Like love and Mary Oliver’s musings and “Game of Thrones.”

Whatever the case may be, I know that adversity is an educator. This slight bout of grief over beer’s absence is a chance for me to learn. And to grow — unapologetically. So let’s raise a glass of fizzy water to that.

SHAKE, RATTLE AND ROLL A column about the trials and tribulations of Parkinson’s Disease

I was 19 years old when my college roommate walked me to my first ever counseling session.

What started as “I just don’t feel like myself” turned into blacking out in class within a matter of weeks. While I’d always dealt with severe anxiety — which had only worsened in my late teen years — the winter of 2014 exasperated the ugliest sides of my brain’s chemical imbalances. I opted, for the most part, to cry in bed for hours rather than attend class. The worst-case-scenarios that usually lingered in the corner of my mind took full control. I really, truly, wasn’t myself. I was only a shell of a person overtaken completely by her mental illness.

I learned quickly that counseling helped. The validation that comes when a trained professional says, “You’re not crazy,” rocked my world. I got through the darkest hours of my life largely thanks to that counselor, and to the roommate who convinced me to get help.

I stopped going to counseling, graduated and kept a decent hold on my anxiety until just recently, when those worst-case-scenarios started creeping back, resulting in the obsessive behaviors and emotional swings I’ve learned to recognize as sure signs that things are getting darker. I’m back in counseling and happy I’ve made it a priority, because I’ve learned being a slave to my mental illness simply because “other people are worse off” or “I should be able to handle it by myself” are not reasons to keep from talking about a very real, often debilitating affliction.

I don’t bring this up for sympathy. I bring it up because it seems the longer I work as a journalist, the more people trust me with their personal struggles and stories. These are often off the record, and only come up as footnotes during our conversations. Regardless, it’s become obvious to me that most people are going through rough stuff, and our culture often emphasizes toughening up rather than facing those demons head on.

Trust me — nothing compares to having someone tell you that the crippling fear you feel over the most mundane situations isn’t insane. If you’re looking for someone to tell you that, here I am. Don’t be afraid to talk about it, and to seek help.

My new superpower

By A.C. Woolnough Reader Columnist Many people think of Parkinson’s disease as afflicting only older people.

They conjure up an image of someone with stooped posture, bent over a cane, slowly shuffling down the sidewalk accompanied by shaking or tremors. More enlightened folks (and readers of this column) know that stereotype is true for only a small percentage of PWPs (people with Parkinson’s). More common now is a picture of Michael J. Fox, Neil Diamond, Alan Alda, Jesse Jackson or Linda Ronstadt — all with PD and all in the news recently. Tremor, dyskinesia (uncontrolled and involuntary movement), impaired balance and bradykinesia (slowness of movement) are the more obvious motor symptoms of PD. (Don’t stop reading—the vocabulary lesson for this column is over.)

Non-motor symptoms are actually more prevalent — it’s just that they are not as visible — and include depression, constipation, loss of smell, apathy, facial masking, ED, soft voice and small handwriting. Side effects of the various Parkinson’s drugs can include compulsive behaviors (gambling, shopping and hypersexuality), brain fog (word finding difficulty) and other cognitive problems, low blood pressure, nausea, sleep issues, blurred vision and hallucinations.

These symptoms (both motor and non-motor) often lead to social withdrawal or isolation, and worsening ability to move and do physical tasks—like emptying the dishwasher. (Yes, that comes from experience.) Cognitive decline may be a frequent and unwelcome companion.

What is the solution? It seems obvious that exercise is one tool. Keep moving to keep moving! Doctors and therapists, however, rarely say exercise. Instead, they say, loudly and firmly: exercise, exercise, exercise. That was the genesis for a new program offered by Bonner General Health in partnership with our local PD support group — PowerPAC (Parky’s and Carepartners).

Rock Steady Boxing is an international exercise program that uses the physical movements of boxing to combat both motor

A.C. Woolnough. and non-motor symptoms of PD. A typical bout (get it?) of RSB starts with stretches and yoga, moves on to making large and deliberate movements, then transitions into a variety of exercises for upper body, lower body and core. Some days we include weights. Every lesson (90 minutes two or three times a week) includes boxing moves. We do not hit each other, but we do beat up on speed bags, heavy bags and training bags. Each punch has a number associated. 1 is a left jab, 2-right cross, 3-left hook, 4-right hook, 5-left uppercut and 6-right uppercut. Odd numbered punches are left side; even punches are right side.

We may do 30 seconds of half combinations followed by thirty seconds of three-quarters combinations. Sometimes people will call out numbers, and we then box with those punches mostly in sets of four — one slow, one loud, one fast and one hard. A 1-2-5 sequence calls for left jab, right cross and left uppercut. Remembering the sequence and following it can be very challenging. All of this happens while different mix tapes are played — helping amp up the effort on our part.

We may do 10 seconds of 10 different calisthenics before taking a 30 second break and then repeating the same movements or switching to different exercises that might

include, jumping jacks, burpees, squats, lunges, kicks, pushups, medicine balls and arm circles. Many days, we end up doing three sets of 10 each of 10 different exercises — 300 in all. Always, however, we do boxing drills as part of our workout.

My favorite thing to do is picture someone (usually a former boss) on the heavy bag and then really go after it. At times, we’ll do activities standing on one leg which, for some of us (me), is very difficult. We generally close with a cool down that includes stretches and a group cheer.

I can imagine someone saying, “So what? Sounds like something anyone can do any time anywhere.” This person needs to learn why this program is so effective for PWPs. Back in the beginning of this article, I touched on social isolation. With 10 or 12 people just like me in the gym, there is time to talk, laugh, socialize and not worry about being judged. Also, with our physical therapist (Tom) and our athletic trainer (Molly), we have skilled coaches who ensure safety and make modifications as appropriate.

RSB works with PWPs in wheelchairs and using walkers. We have classes designed for each group. Indeed, we all exercise, exercise, exercise.

Just as important is the cognitive aspect of RSB. When numbers are called out and a sequence is to be followed, focus and executive function are required. RSB addresses movement (motor skills), socialization and cognitive skills. If it sounds like RSB is making a difference to the Parkinson’s community in the Sandpoint area, that’s because it is.

About that superpower: My balance has been compromised by PD, and for the past few years, I’ve had to lean on or grab something so as not to fall over while putting on my underwear after a shower. I could not stand on one foot without falling. Participating in RSB has improved my balance so I can now put on my underwear without tipping over — my new superpower. It may not sound like much but with a progressive condition (it’s going to get worse over time) like PD, any regression or improvement is a big deal. PWPs celebrate every victory — and that’s the subject of a future column.

Kaylee Cole: A musician and more

By Lyndsie Kiebert Reader Staff Rarely is an artist’s origin story as unforgettable as Kaylee Cole’s.

The Seattle-based singer-songwriter experienced a brutal car wreck in college. As Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah” played, the car’s radio knobs pierced Cole’s legs. She recounts the story as a turning point in her life that led her to pursue music.

“All of a sudden I started writing and singing, and I hadn’t considered myself a musician until that point,” she said.

Cole will play two shows in Sandpoint next weekend: the first at Evans Brothers Coffee Roasters June 7, and the second at the Pend d’Oreille Winery June 9.

Her first performances happened in Spokane, a place Cole said nurtured her as a young musician. She released her first album in 2008 and worked on several projects until 2012, when a publishing battle brought her music to an abrupt halt. Cole’s previous work and anything she planned to produce no longer belonged to her. She said the situation “silenced” her until 2017. Still, she now sees a silver lining.

“Because I couldn’t focus on my own music projects, I was able to expand as a businesswoman and a human,” she said.

During her time away from making music, Cole moved to Los Angeles and spent her time working in event production, music supervision, film scores, dance and more. Today, one facet of Cole’s professional life is her work as a “holistic producer.” In a nutshell, holistic producers create experiences — whether they be an event, film, retreat or show — while keeping things like self-care, spiritual well-being and even astrological factors in mind.

Cole said she considers herself a sort of “spiritual stage mom.”

“Not only do I care about being under budget, I care about, ‘Did we eat today?’“ Cole said. “It’s about encouraging people to take the best care of themselves so we can create our best art.”

Cole recently traveled to Telluride, Colo., to attend the Mountainfilm Festival, where they screened a short documentary she produced called “The Mystery of Now.” The documentary centers on Apache artist Douglas Miles and the youth that represent his skate brand, APACHE Skateboards.

Cole said she started working on “The Mystery of Now” in 2017.

The 16-minute film is now available to watch on YouTube.

“I’m really grateful for the experience,” she said, adding the documentary was well received in Telluride. “It’s nice, two years later, to celebrate it in this really cool way.”

Cole’s June 7 Sandpoint show will also feature solo performances from Josh Hedlund and Ben Olson, who both intend to play mostly “B-sides” — more of their lesser known

and new songs. For Cole, it will be an opportunity to play her new songs, which she said are “really honest” and reflect how much she’s grown during her musical hiatus. She said she resented the situation while she was in the midst of it, but now she knows it only forced her to broaden her horizons and explore her other passions.

Bobby said the plan is to hold the open mic outside on the store’s deck, weather permitting, so that readers will have Lake Pend Oreille as their backdrop. Each reader will have five minutes to present their work — poetry, fiction, personal essays and the like — and the event is slated for 4-6 p.m.

“No pre-registration is required, and unless we get completely inundated with a hundred people, everyone will get a chance

to read,” he said.

Bobby said the Davis Grocery cafe will be open for the event, selling sandwiches and baked goods. The store also boasts a sizable wine and craft beer selection.

I’ve been absolutely entranced by Phoebe Bridgers lately, specifically her 2017 release “Stranger in the Alps.” One song I can’t get over is “You Missed My Heart.” It tells a story of crazed jealousy, deep sadness and eventually some peace, but not without a lot of violence and death, and all set to gentle piano.

Since it’s really a Mark Kozelek song, the story takes on a new feel as the narrator goes from being a sad, insane man to a soft-spoken woman when Bridgers covers it.

For me, it’s the highlight of an already thoroughly shining album.

...the birds! It seems everywhere I go lately, there are birds living it up all over the place. The robins in my yard are hunting worms while the chickadees chat on the power lines above and ravens circle menacingly over my chicken coop (that last one I’m not so happy about). I also recently heard some bald eagles have a heated conversation in a tree not far from my house, and watched a pileated woodpecker hop from cedar to cedar, a flash of red the only visual giveaway. While I’m no professional birder, I definitely have an appreciation for our winged neighbors.

The quest for dog-friendly businesses in North Idaho

BONNER COUNTY HAS 217 GRADS Bonner County has much to feel proud of in its county school system, very much indeed. Although some of the schools in the county have as few as a half dozen pupils owing to the sparsely settled districts the county comes forward with 120 students that passed the eighth grade with credit. To pass the examination required by the state board of education cannot be passed over lightly as the questions would do justice to any teacher’s examination and that is why so much pride is felt in the boys and girls who have stood the test.

TOURIST PARK HAS LARGE SHARE OF VISITORS The tourist park down on the lake front is always ready for company and especially in the evening when it gets along towards supper time. Samuel Wigton, man in charge, puts on a nice fire and starts the kettle boiling, so to speak. Mr. Wigton then lights his pipe and waits for visitors and he is not often disappointed. Thursday night eleven cars spent the night there.

Friday went one less and Saturday brought only eight. All were loud in their praises of the beautiful view the park commands and only an occasional grouch kicks about the accommodations.

One stormy night last week Mr. Wigton gave the campers the privilege of making their beds in the cook house owing to the rain.

Sixteen parked in old time western style and west on their way rejoicing next day that they had been given the best there was.
