SNOWMASS LOTTERY SALE CONCEPT
A
A SNOWMASS VISION FOR A FAIR AND BALANCED QUALITY SALE OF QUALITY LIVESTOCK
Alpacas selected for the Lottery Sale, both Huacaya and Suri, come from premier proven breeding programs. What does it mean when we say proven?
The genetic lineages of all the alpacas have been tested through time in reproductive health, performance in progeny, as well as top performance at show. Performance is further measured by yearly scientific fiber testing standards and strict breed ideals. The alpacas chosen for sale all have proven genetic lines of lasting fineness, brightness and consistency of quality fleece. The white alpacas are bred for pure lines of the finest, brightest Royal white genetics to be found in the world in both Suri and Huacaya.
All sale alpacas are strong in stature with balanced conformation and the outstanding, classic Snowmass and Pucara look that has taken decades of breeding to perfect. Only slight variations exist in each tier of alpaca being sold. The Snowmass and Pucara herds are quite small in relation to the world herds of commercial alpacas. In our 30 years of breeding, we have developed a highly prepotent breeding pool that limits our ability to use many of our finest genetically related offspring.
2
Snowmass Alpacas Lottery 2014
As breeders we all have a value base system for our herds. Certain individuals are standout in all areas. Others have simply proven to outperform. Some hold very important genetic components that are limited in numbers within our herds. Others are those which we have multiples in similar or same genetic lineages (brothers, sisters, etc.) that allow us more flexibility to offer for sale. Then there are those few that have incredibly amazing fleeces and stature – perfect in all ways with some slight variations in color. For example, white alpacas with phenotypic color coming through are removed from our white breeding program but are perfect to add excellence in fleece to color breeding programs. As premier Huacaya and Suri breeders, Snowmass and Pucara guarantee all alpacas offered for sale to be premium quality and representative of the best genetics within their breeding programs. All alpacas sold are guaranteed as sound and healthy both physically and reproductively.

How does the lottery sale work?
On Saturday, May 10, 2014, at 9:30 a.m., all alpacas will be available for selection.
The design of the sale is to allow everyone an equal opportunity to purchase the alpaca of their choosing for a fair market, fixed price. More than one breeder may want to purchase the same alpaca. Unlike a first-come, first-served race to purchase or competitive bidding that raises the price, a lottery drawing is held; the process is described in detail below.
Each alpaca is identified by an ear tag with a number; an additional hang tag on its collar indicates price via the sale value tiers.
bids represent an agreement to purchase the alpaca bid upon. If only one bid is in the box, the bidder wins the bid and purchases the animal. If more than one bid is in the box, then they go into a lottery bin and the winner is chosen by lottery drawing.
The drawing takes place as the pens are closed. Each pen will close one at a time starting with

the first pen at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014. Once the pen is closed, no more bids may be placed on the alpacas within. As the boxes are opened, the winning bidders are announced. The alpacas that are purchased are removed from the pens; any that are not sold remain in the pen and may be purchased on a first-come, first-served basis.

P
roclaimed “The Most Beautiful Small Town in America” by Rand McNally and USA Today, Sandpoint is often extolled for its idyllic setting along the shores of gorgeous Lake Pend Oreille amidst majestic mountains. But all of that is secondary to Sandpoint’s friendly, genuine, hometown feel. You could say we have good energy.
