Lynn Edens
A passionate fiber artist, Lynn Edens came to alpaca breeding by way of her love of their extraordinary fiber and its unique characteristics. She was further energized by the discovery that the very finest alpaca fiber often failed to find a market due to the challenges of processing it, and that what did find its way into yarn and other products was often processed in a way that did not

show its premium characteristics to best advantage. When she met a like-minded mill owner, Pam Pullins, they collaborated to design, produce and distribute alpaca yarns that showcase the best fiber that American breeders could offer, an effort that resulted in the establishment of the premium yarn company, Our Back 40. Our Back 40’s presence in the marketplace has begun to attract the attention of small scale U.S. knitwear manufacturers that have not found an opportunity to work with American alpaca before, and helping these companies access and profit from the high-quality alpaca fiber produced in this country will be a top priority of Lynn’s going forward. In addition to Our Back 40, Lynn operates Little Creek Farm Alpacas.
Norm Evans
Norm Evans received his DVM degree from Auburn University in 1968. He started a mixed practice which became a five-person practice. He did embryo transfer in cattle for eight years and has done camelids for 25 years. Since 1996, his practice has been 100 percent camelid. He is the author of three editions of “The Alpaca Field Manual.” While retired from active practice, he still works full-time with field research of alpaca fiber production based on genetics and nutrition as measured by the skin biopsy and histogram. His presentation relates his findings of male and female genetic traits and how these traits may be altered by the water and forage consumption. How scale, secondary/primary fiber variation and medullation seems to affect brightness, luster, fineness and handle will be discussed.
Molly Gardner
Molly lives in Le Bons Bay, New Zealand. She and her family own and run Thistledown Suri Stud, specializing in black Suri alpacas. Molly is actively involved in the Alpaca Association of New Zealand and sits on the Showing and Judging subcommittee. She is passionate about Suri fiber and is at the forefront of the emerging Suri fiber industry in Australia and New Zealand. Molly has been a qualified alpaca judge since 2009. Snowmass Alpacas Genetics by DesiGn THREE DECADES OF ALPACA BREEDING
Don and Julie Nick, Maree, David and Heidi Skinner
L
Jim and Diane Otis ooking back into the history of alpaca breeding, from the early Incan civilization up to the modern day, we can see that there has been a long-standing goal to improve the elemental fleece traits of the alpaca in order to adapt to the ever-evolving demand for luxurious alpaca textiles.
Since the inception of Snowmass Alpacas in 1984, our breeding directive has been to develop a herd of consistent quality and quantity fiber production animals.
8
Snowmass Alpacas Sale & Symposium 2014
Initially we sought to breed specifically for “fineness of fleece” as this was the most valued measurement of quality in the early days of the industry. Over the years in our pursuit of “fineness of fleece,” we have also gained an appreciation for a variety of other important fleece elements. It is commonly known that the majority of alpacas have relatively fine fleece in the first year of their growth, but there is a great propensity for an increase in micron count in each successive year of their development.
As we watch the world market for alpaca textiles expand, we are learning more about the essential elements that contribute to the commercial value of alpaca fiber. Namely, these elements are fineness, consistency of fineness and fleece brightness. These aspects are those that we believe should be especially emphasized going into the future of alpaca breeding.
Come Select your ideal herdsire
We have been diligently working to understand the factors that influence this micron increase by asking important questions and conducting research. How much of this effect is brought on by environmental exposures? How much is influenced by genetic factors? Are there other aspects we are overlooking?
Along with changes in fineness that come with age, there are also dramatic changes in the style and dynamics of the alpaca’s primary and secondary fibers. Scientific resources alongside regular fleece sampling and husbandry records have been key in the evolution of improving our breeding selection process over the years.
Each alpaca in the Snowmass herd is grid sampled as a cria, and then sampled yearly for AFD-, SD, CV, % >30, curvature, staple length, and skirted prime blanket weight. As we work more with these specific fiber elements that ultimately enhance the quality of alpaca textiles, our breeding directives are becoming increasingly clear. Other physical characteristics such as the head, ears, eyes, muzzle, bite, topline, genitalia and balance, all contribute to overall conformation quality of the alpaca. Our concept of the ideal alpaca is based on fleece characteristics proven by science alongside an aesthetic value in the alpaca that is recognizable in its conformation. This year we will be involving our most prized production genetics in a specific follicle testing procedure with Dr. Norm Evans. This testing will facilitate a better understanding of what is happening at the follicular level with the four main fleece styles we have identified and are now specifically breeding for. Dr. Evans will be sharing this procedure and his testing methods during the May 8-11, 2014, symposium at the Snowmass Alpacas Ranch. This balance of art and science we pride in our breeding programs is precisely what we wish to share with fellow breeders. At the symposium you can experience product lines we have produced from our fiber (of all grades), as well as learn about exciting new textiles being produced from both Huacaya and Suri alpacas. You can see firsthand the Snowmass shearing system in action and converse with renowned breeders from around the globe. This is a rare opportunity to acquire the most advanced Huacaya and Suri alpaca genetics available in the world from Snowmass Alpacas and Pucara International. The key to ALPACA becoming a viable, global commodity is having known quantities of quality genetics to create consistent herds that produce consistently fine ALPACA fiber. We strongly believe that there cannot be too many superior alpacas! If you are dedicated to creating a herd of superior alpacas to support the global demands for royal alpaca fiber, please join us this May at the Snowmass Ranch in the beautiful panhandle of northern Idaho.

Snowmass Alpacas: Visionaries in Royal Alpaca Production
nowmass Alpacas has reached a 30-year goal with more than 90 percent of the Snowmass herd possessing tested fleeces of Super Royal (13-17), Royal (18-19) and Baby Grade (20-22.5).
The Snowmass herd is world renowned as an example of some of the finest animals alive. Their health, vigor, beauty and beautiful phenotypes are truly remarkable. Their luxuriant fiber is avidly sought after by other top breeders and, most especially, textile manufacturers. Each and every year, the Snowmass herd becomes finer, more advanced and more admired. The demand and understanding for FINENESS and bright, elite alpaca fiber is now one of the guiding principles for breeders. Snowmass Alpacas has been selectively breeding for 30 years to acquire solid, proven genetics for FINENESS, BRIGHTNESS, UNIFORMITY and CONSISTENCY of fleece. Alonso Burgos, manager of PROALSA & Grupo Inca Alpaca Fiber Purchasing Company of Peru, first reported after a long journey that the five Royal bales of fiber from the United States had arrived. Soon they were brought to their sorting room, weighed and sorted. Details were announced in Phoenix, Arizona, at the Making of Champions Winners’ Circle Sale February 24-25, 2012.
Alonso describes the process: “We have finished working with your fiber at the sorting plant. Already I can tell you that, in the more than 50 years we have in the business, we have never seen a brighter nor a more uniform alpaca lot at the sorting plant. It was a really extraordinary event to see

the sorting ladies going over your material and being amazed over the brightness of the material. The plans to include your material on the special edition of fine textiles we will do, together with the winners of the nationwide alpaca fleece contest, are still in place. “The usual ‘waste’ as noils when we process fine fiber as yours on the combing machines is between 8 percent and 10 percent. The Snowmass fiber was only a bit over 5 percent. This means that your fiber was not only long enough but also strong. People at the plant were also impressed by the whiteness of colour and the shine. “These are all initial thoughts only, but it is very, very clear that this product is absolutely unique in many respects and that

precisely it is this fact that makes it so attractive. For one thing, this is the very first time in history (with the small exception of a small trial lot from Pacomarca) that the production of a single alpaca breeder has been turned into finished product of the highest quality possible with all the data and history of the project well documented. ...What a powerful story!!!” This year we are putting together a bale as close to Super Royal as we can as well as a TRUE Royal bale of fiber under 17 micron. Julie Skinner responds: “The advancements in alpaca are extraordinary and Royal alpaca fleece is taking the industry to new levels across the world. With the struggles of global economy, we have seen some shifts in the industry. Struggling breeders need to remain hopeful in knowing that there is indeed a growing demand for fine alpaca and fine alpaca genetics. “As finer and brighter advanced alpaca fiber comes into play, the industry shifts into greater demands for alpaca. There is a healthy, global incentive to continue to advance the breed of alpaca so that we can fulfill the growing demand for the finest alpaca fleece. We hope that the United States continues to shine and be a leader in this effort of creating some of the best-known alpaca genetics in the world.”

Nepal Update
Sumptuous Fiber – Extraordinary Rewards! After a long journey from the bailing room of Snowmass Alpacas in Sandpoint to the high Himalayas of Nepal, our first hand-knotted sample rugs made exclusively from Snowmass Alpaca fiber have arrived. They are everything we expected and more. This is the first time that the Nepalese people have ever worked with alpaca. This is a historic moment for “alpaca” and the beginning of a wonderful relationship. Please read more below to get the full story on the process of making these beautiful handmade rugs. If you are interested in prices and ordering one of the treasured, collectible Snowmass-Kumari Alpaca wool rugs please e-mail us info@snowmassalpacas.com.
Snowmass Alpacas partners with Kumari Rugs Snowmass Alpacas formed a partnership with Kumari Rugs and Tapestries in the first production line of Nepalese and Tibetan, alpaca hand-knotted rugs and tapestries. The journey began with a load of 24 precious Snowmass bales weighing 6,480 pounds being shipped from Sandpoint, Idaho, USA to Nepal. • The bales were loaded onto a truck container and then sealed at the Snowmass Alpaca Ranch, Sandpoint, Idaho in the fall of 2012. • They were then transported by truck container to Los Angeles. • When they arrived in Los Angeles, the container was loaded in a shipping vessel and was transported across the Pacific Ocean to the port of Singapore. • After the container arrived in Singapore, the vessel was further transferred to the port of Kolkata, India by sea. • After it arrived in Kolkata, India, and cleared Indian customs, the bales were transferred by rail to Birgunj, Nepal. After clearing Nepalese customs, the bales were loaded into a truck and transferred to Kathmandu, Nepal. • The fiber then arrived in Kirtipur, a suburb of the capital city of Kathmandu and a historic, ethnic Newar community.
About Snowmass and Kumari Rugs and Tapestries These spectacular alpaca rugs and tapestries are handmade in Nepal by Nepalese and Tibetan artisans. This is the first time Tibetan-style rugs and tapestries have been introduced in alpaca fibers. For many centuries, Tibetans have been weaving rugs for use in their homes as bed sets; as saddle blankets for horses; carpets for prayer halls, huge pillar covers and wall hangings in the monasteries, etc. Thus, rugs have formed an integral part in the lives of Tibetans as they endure harsh weather conditions in the vast and high plateau of Tibet.
12
After the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959, hundreds of thousands of Tibetans escaped and took refuge in parts of India and Nepal. Gradually, they settled and formed communities all across the region; with their propensity for trade and their amiable nature, they blended in cordially with the native inhabitants of Nepal and India. Pretty soon, bustling bazaars and lively neighborhoods began springing up with the distinct flair of Tibetan hospitality and cultural identity. Under the leadership of their charismatic and revered leader, the Dalai Lama, the Tibetan refugees extended their culture and tradition into a means of livelihood with professions ranging from sculpting and architecture to painting and weaving. Among these, the art of rug weaving proved beneficial for many Tibetans who were skilled and well-

versed in that area of trade. Thus, Himalayan rugs were introduced to Nepal. The first Tibetan settlers started selling their rugs, either antique or otherwise, to curious tourists. While earning their livelihood
with different art skills in a new land, these hard-working Tibetan refugees received the support of the Swiss government to begin a cottage industry in rug weaving in the early 1960s. The intent was to sell rugs to the growing tourist trade in Nepal. The rugs produced were hand carded, hand spun and hand trimmed using only traditional designs in smaller sizes. This process of rug making still continues today in Nepal. In the late 1970s, German rug dealers came to Nepal and began purchasing rugs in larger sizes and in volume. Subsequently, the German market became the hub of distribution for unique Tibetan rugs throughout Europe. Due to the high demand of European buyers in the mid-1980s, Tibetan rug production in Nepal became the nation’s second-largest industry. Later, leading U.S. importers began to buy Tibetan rugs made in Nepal, with specific design and colors for the U.S. market. The rug industry in Nepal has come a long ways from its early days of small bazaar sales to the large-scale, industrial production of today. At present, Tibetan rugs have become a leading commodity within the handmade, floor-covering market in both Europe and the United States; it still continues to grow with fame and popularity in other parts of the world. We at Snowmass Alpacas are excited and proud to be the first to introduce alpaca fibers to the people of Nepal and Tibet for their craft. Ultimately, this partnership will send a long-lasting message to the world through the beautiful pieces these artisans will create. Please stay tuned for updates on the progress of the Snowmass/ Kumari project.

Pucara International
A
Pucara International Alan Cousill and Jude Anderson. Proud Alpaca breeders since 1991.
l and Jude have raised alpacas since 1991, owned alpacas in the U.S. since 1995 and farmed them here since 2001. They bring a unique perspective because of their Australian heritage and because their sole source of income is from farming alpacas. They want to drive the fledgling alpaca industry to understand that success can only be achieved if U.S. alpaca fiber produces high-quality products that provides both grower and manufacturer enough to sustain livelihoods and maintain the integrity of the breed in the eye of the consumer.
1994, they attended the 2P Import sale at Charlevoix, Michigan, where they met the Snowmass family and instantly knew they shared common ideas on most things alpaca! It has been a continual quest, perhaps
Jude is an AAA (Australia) certified judge since 1998 and gained AOBA certification in 2002 and Senior Judge and Judge Trainer/ Instructor status in 2005. She also certified at the IAJS school in Peru in 2000. Since 1998 Jude has judged in Australia, USA, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. That included judging national shows in Australia, New Zealand and, of course, the US. Jude has also conducted seminars and spoken in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA, UK and Germany on topics including breeding, reproduction and alpaca husbandry, alpaca fiber, selection, genetics, and nutrition. Jude, along with other AOBA-certified judges Mike Safley, Amanda VandenBosch and Cheryl Gehly, co-authored “The Art and Science of Alpaca Judging.” Pucara has always kept a keen focus on Suri textile relevance. It is time to look beyond the show system and realize the best Suri product is to be celebrated! The 2014 Breeders Symposium will feature some of the most breathtaking product Suri enthusiasts would want to see. Al and Jude have assembled a boutique of haute couture Suri garments that hold the fiber in the highest esteem. This stunning display will show there is weight behind the traditional commercial belief that if there is product of high quality in design and textile merit, then margins will allow Suri breeders and mill owners to pursue the further advancement of the breed. Pucara International finds cloth and garments made here in the United States and from overseas in New Zealand, Australia and Peru that hold testament to the beauty of Suri. This boutique collection validates the claim by Pucara International that indeed Suri is truly exotic and offers breeders the chance to grow something that is unique and wonderful for financial gain. It is this philosophy that underlies the affinity with Don and Julie at Snowmass Alpacas, with whom they have co-owned alpacas at times and been friends and clients since 1994. Currently Pucara International runs 350 Huacaya and Suri on 135 acres in the wine-growing region of the Willamette Valley in Oregon. They also own a herd of mainly Suris in Australia. When they discovered the United States had “Peruvian” alpacas in 14

an addiction, to produce Suris of high value here in the United States. To that end Al and Jude have sourced U.S. bred Suri lines to complement and advance their herd. Al and Jude will be the first to admit that if it were not for the generous participation of valued partners like Britt and Patty Hasselbring with whom they co-own The Suri Stud Stable, and Jack and Kelly Armstrong of the former Latah Creek fame and who now partner in the Pucara PureSuri herd, most of this would not be possible. And one last shout out for their great mates Steve and Laura Hall at Buzz n Hum Alpacas and Margaret Ann White at Willamina Creek Farm who Al and Jude believe own the best small Suri herds in the country! At this year’s Snowmass Genetics Advancement Sale, every member of the Pucara International 2014 show team will be available for your acquisition. The key to ALPACA becoming a viable global commodity is having known quantities of superior genetics to produce consistent herds producing consistently fine ALPACA fiber. This is a rare opportunity to acquire the most advanced Huacaya and Suri alpaca genetics available in the world from Snowmass Alpacas and Pucara International.

t is with great pride that we offer this superb package: Snowmass Heaven-Sent alongside one of our finest Snowmass Defiance sons, Snowmass Royal Incan. Together they make a momentous pair.
These animals are something you need to get your hands on in order to fully appreciate. No words which can do justice to the beauty and value inherent in them. If you are not able to come to see them in person, you will still be able to have a glimpse of their significance through their pedigrees and pictures. Each one carries unique intricacies in their lineages that we could write volumes about. We can confidently say that legends start with royal seed stock like this. Snowmass Royal Incan’s dam, Snowmass Royal Inca, is our highest-value, fawn-production female. Her offspring have all been lead show string with Super Royal fleece. Of those we have sold, none have sold for less than $30,000. Her 2012 cria, Snowmass Royal Conopa, took first place Futurity 2012 and is now owned by J Creek Ranch. Her 2011 cria, Snowmass Conopa’s Inca, was purchased by Mary Bell at our 2012 Auction for $40,000. This is one of our first Snowmass Defiance sons to be born, and we are extremely excited to be offering him with Heaven-Sent.

ere, we’ve done it! It’s been a long, long time since we offered a weanling pair at auction, but here it is. You’ve got the juvenile full brother to a multiple-time champion male in the hardest classes of all, white. And he, Jet Stream, is matched with a daughter of Tikanui, and granddaughter of our 2013 Dark Futurity Herdsire of the Year, Chakotah. If you are a discerning breeder who understands how stud Suris are created, this is for you. A match made in our form of heaven! But if line breeding scares you, this is a rare treasure of two exceptionally bred juveniles who will be at the head of the 2014 Pucara show team and who will compete in the toughest classes in the nation. Obviously, Jet Stream is the son of five-time Futurity Light Herdsire of the Year, Pucara Kahuna, and one of our very top stud females, Mandalay, mother of Pucara PureSuri Tikanui and Pucara PureSuri Royal Silk the Suri Network Judges’ Choice

They epitomize true Suri style, with looks to die for. Whether you want to make stud Suris of the future by breeding these two or whether you want to out-cross these with your own Suris and collect a heap of ribbons in the meantime, this is an offering for seriously minded Suri aficionados. hat a delight she will be for the buyer! And with a cria imminent! This is a rare combination of Pucara Kahuna, the five-time Futurity Light Herdsire of the Year, with Our Accoyo Peruvian Rockstar’s genetics that we chased in the dam line to create hybrid vigor. And did it work! Holly is a stunning example of the Suri breed exhibiting exaggerated luster, the result of density and fineness in these lines. Even in her third fleece, she displays long staple length, uniform handle and substantial luster. Her frame and style is so pleasing to the eye that we use her in our conformation seminars as a perfect example for the breed. We were taken by the beautiful style of her dam, Young Alberta, a ribbon winner and Suri Network Fleece Champion, the epitome of “ideal.” She has an extremely appealing head and the most incredible locking on a Suri we have ever seen; this was verified by a group of senior judges who visited our farm just to witness her excellence! Was the $55,000 worth it? You bet. Her production has been everything we hoped with Holly a prime example. Holly’s breeding to Chakotah, our Futurity Dark Herdsire of the Year 2013 and Reserve Dark Herdsire 2011, is the result of five years of planning and promises to provide an elite outcome. DRAPE, STRENGTH and COMFORT Royal and Baby 16-23 micron Curvatures 30-50s The staple length after first year averages 4 to 7 inches. Low frequency of crimp, medium- to deep-amplitude fiber grows into defined staples with secondary fibers almost fully developed at birth. Very long staples at birth and have the longest first year staple growth of up to 8.5 inches. The distinguishing value of the silky is low scale, soft slippery feel and accentuated brightness. This fleece has the most dramatic difference of the other Royal grades. This fleece has a very unique silky handle thus the name. It also is extremely bright to the eye (low scale). This fleece type is very exciting to look at and can vary in depth of amplitude, curvature and visible crimp. The main attributes are the length of staple and the consistency of length over the entire fleece and extremities of the alpaca, such as the neck and legs.

Snowmass Bella Bells CIS: 3757 ARI: 31795708 Female, White Sire: Snowmass Best Man
Service sire, Snowmass Seven Below
dOB: July 27, 2009 dam: Snowmass Queen Bella Sarah
nowmass Bella Bells is a production female you would be sorry to miss. She is an extraordinary Snowmass Best Man daughter who carries the impeccable, white lineage of her dam, the one-and-only Snowmass Queen Bella Sarah. The production quality of these two crossing lines is white excellence incarnate.
We wanted to see more juveniles like Seventh Samurai, so we bred Bella Bells back to Snowmass Seven Below this year. Our only expectation is another stellar white cria. The key in this genetic pairing is the production of a long, bright and fine staple that covers the entire body of the alpaca, similar to Best Man himself.
Snowmass Bella Bells’ production history is proof of her limitless white potential. Her first two offspring, Snowmass Seventh Samurai and Snowmass Enclave, have been on the leading edge of our juvenile show string selection. Snowmass Enclave, at five months old, is preparing for show this year, while Seventh Samurai was awarded Reserve Champion during the 2013 Futurity. The judges were bright-eyed in describing Seventh Samurai’s revolutionary fleece characteristics. Given that “white juvenile male” is the most competitive class in the country and we can only select three animals from our entire yearly production, the gravity of Bella Bells’ contribution is clear.
While it is ultimately a bittersweet feeling, we feel extremely proud to be in the position to offer females that have production records like Bella Bells. She is the last of the direct Snowmass Best Man daughters remaining in the United States, unless more are imported from Switzerland where Best Man now resides. Congratulations are in order to the breeder who acquires this tremendous production package.

When you create something new, you’re breaking tradition – and that is an act of defiance.
f there ever was an alpaca born from selective breeding who transcended all the definitions, traditions and expectations of its breeders, it is Snowmass Defiance. Defiance has truly challenged our ideas about the future of this breeding program and, overall, the alpaca industry. He has rapidly risen to a legendary level and is, without a doubt, one of the most significant males in Snowmass production history. He is quite simply the ideal seed stock for a revolution in alpaca breeding. Defiance is the current 2013 Supreme Champion male by international judging standards; beyond his accolades, a wealth of genetic science supports him. His dam’s lineage contains essential maternal genetics that have been proven over multiple generations to contribute strong elements of fineness, brightness, density and consistency. Snowmass Maree Love, Snowmass Delightful Duet and Snowmass Freedom are all of this line. Many clients can bear witness to the significance of these maternal genetics. Defiance’s paternal lineage has equally contributed 24

advanced heritable characteristics. His sire, Snowmass Elite Legend, remains the North American leader in years as Herdsire of the Year. Elite Legend’s sire, Snowmass Quechua, was also Herdsire of the Year before him. Snowmass Defiance represents the next level of advancement in this everexceptional paternal line. We cannot think of any other stud that can match his caliber of advancing genetic elements. These elements translate into a consistently superior alpaca fleece, and an overall perfect phenotype. The evidence to support this can be seen in his revolutionary histogram testings over the past four years. We believe it is time to send the message of Defiance to the masses. He is far too important for us to keep. Defiance needs to breed to new maternal lines in order to hasten the evolution of alpacas in the industry. Our mission as alpaca breeders and enthusiasts is to ultimately contribute genetics to the overall population, so we will advance the alpaca industry to a scale and quality level that can compete with the merino and cashmere industries. The revolution starts now. Who is ready to lead?

hen Snowmass Divine Love was born into this world, he must have brought something from another world with him. At first glimpse of his fleece, we had to rub our eyes and make sure that the light wasn’t playing tricks on us. Once we realized what we were looking at, our jaws dropped. For the first time in our entire history as alpaca breeders, we were looking at a lavender-colored alpaca. That’s right … lavender fleece.
he moved on to face the champions from all of the color classes in the judges’ choice competition – again he won.
We had come to expect nothing less than extraordinary cria from his dam, Snowmass Maree Love, but we could not have predicted the phenomenon that is Divine Love. His otherworldly fineness and density are simply uncanny in combination with his mystical color. We must give credit to his sire, Snowmass Conopa, for this seemingly arcane genetic infusion.
So the big question is, Why is Divine Love being offered in this sale? Well, our simple answer is that we believe he is too valuable to reside solely within the Snowmass herd. We are offering co-ownership to a breeding farm that recognizes and appreciates his profound and unique potential.
It was apparent that we needed to take Divine Love to show, but we weren’t sure what complications would arise due to his color. We think he should have qualified as a grey, but the AOBA show system didn’t have a color on their chart to classify him by. Not knowing what to do with him, they put him in the “bred and owned” class, where he ended up taking champion. From there

It was really exciting to see the astonishment on the judges’ faces when they opened his fleece, and then to listen as they tried to describe his fleece characteristics over the mic. Many people were stunned that he had actually won the overall champion until they saw his fleece for themselves: “Oh wow! … Now I understand.”
Partnership terms are fair and straightforward. Breeding seasons will be shared equally, and our new partner has the option of spring 2014 through summer 2014 or fall 2014 though fall 2015. hat Makes an Elite Alpaca?
The key questions we have been asking ourselves are: What are the differences in our alpacas compared to those bred in Ancient South America, and just what defines an elite alpaca today? The main incentive for all alpaca breeders is that vicu単a wool still sells for $400 to $600 per kilogram, which is 20 to 30 times the price of alpaca wool. The diversities found in modern alpacas are the result of long-term cross-breeding. The wide range of fiber qualities that exist within modern alpaca herds make it very difficult to compile large lots of under 20 micron handling fiber for specialized commercial production. The differences within fiber types are not just in fineness but other fiber characteristics as well: crimp; architecture of the crimp; scale height on the fiber itself, which creates variable degrees of luster and hand; fiber length; and degree of wool fibers produced by secondary follicles and more protective medullated fibers produced by primary follicles. Concentration of these fibers within the fleeces themselves are also factors.

t has always been the mission statement of Snowmass Alpacas to present selections of the best animals from our breeding program during our sales. are beginning to question their
ability to produce enough Royal Baby alpaca fiber to satisfy international textile demands. Genetics for the elite alpaca or royal alpaca (those proven to produce highly refined, fine, bright fleece and progeny that bear the same) are in great demand. We have many years of concentrated and dedicated breeding ahead of us to supply the market demand for bales of Royal alpaca. As a result, we need to become more discerning in our breeding and pay close attention to what is happening in the global market. We must be careful as breeders and judges to not limit our focus on breeding for a particular style of crimp or curvature based on sheep industry models. In this way, we can maintain some of the best properties that make alpaca elite: fineness, brightness, soft handle, added staple length, and extreme versatility in milling processes.

The Peruvian herdsmen who had owned her traveled with her on the back of two motorcycles, Peruvian “Harleys,” in order to entice the importers to follow them back to their hacienda. She was obviously something special. Harley passed away several years ago, but the force of her unforgettable genetics is alive in her descendants today. Majestic Flare’s sire, Snowmass Matrix Majesty, is one of the most renowned, colored alpaca studs in the world. He carries a long line of proven fine fleece genetics and is simply magnificent to behold. Although he has won many championship titles, the list of his champion offspring is his true accomplishment. nowmass Royal Victoria is our first generation of a color line from Snowmass Royal Legends. Royal Legends, a futurity judge’s choice male, is a colored son of Snowmass Elite Legend. Royal Victoria has gone beyond our hopes and expectations as she has blossomed. Her extraordinary qualities of brightness, fineness, consistency, long staple length, color clarity and conformation are all parts of her sum – nothing less than Super Royal. Royal Victoria’s grand sire is Snowmass Andean Night.
His lineage goes back to 4Peruvian Andean Gold, whose lineage has proven to carry a characteristic in his DNA that contributes measurable longevity in fineness of fleece. This lineage has been extremely influential in developing our royal color breeding program. Snowmass Royal Victoria was rated in our screening process as the best choice for a dark fawn juvenile show female this year. That said, we leave the showing up to the wise breeder who brings her home.

Royal Alpaca Some Leading Alpaca Garment Producers and Sellers Comment on Royal Alpaca Grupo Inca, Alpaca III collection KUNA (Royal alpaca) is the most demanding selection of the best alpaca fiber from both (Suri and Huacaya) made by expert hands of craftsmen who master ancient secrets that allow them to choose the finest, softest and warmest fiber, which covers the whole color range offered by this marvelous fiber. All of which makes it possible for the garments made with this input to flaunt an unmistakable elegance and personality. Mitos, (A Myth Comes True) An alpaca sweater ... pure luxury ... connects the reality to the hopes and wishes of our dreams, with our comprehension of superior clothing and the world’s finest garments. Royal and baby alpaca combine the softness of cashmere with the warmth of sheep wool. Natural, pure ... softness. The finest and most precious fibers on earth. Imagine a natural garment as soft as cashmere and luminous in appearance. Ultra-lightweight and maintains their new appearance for a long time. A garment with unique thermal qualities that provides perfect protection in summer as well as in winter. We found these fibers in South America. Our collection ranges from vicuña, the world’s finest fiber, to alpaca. Peruvian Connection Peruvian Alpaca: rarer than cashmere, warmer than wool. From high in the Peruvian Andes comes one of the finest and most luxurious fibers in the world. Peruvian alpaca – once reserved for Inca royalty – is silky against the skin, velvety smooth to the touch. Alpaca’s unique, hollow core gives it an insulating softness that is extremely lightweight, yet much warmer and stronger than wool. In addition, alpaca is hypoallergenic – often wearable for those people who are allergic to wool. Cousin to the llama, alpacas graze at elevations of 10,000 to 14,000 feet on the harsh steppes of the Peruvian Andes. Their thick, sumptuous coats grow naturally in more than 40 shades – from ivory to black, with all the grays and browns in between – and the fleece dyes to glorious color as well. These noble creatures are tended by native Andean herdsmen, who shear them every other year at the onset of the rainy season. The yield is about 8 pounds of fleece per animal. The first clip of the shearling alpaca, called baby alpaca, provides a featherweight, heavenly soft fiber that is even more prized.
