Introductory Hula Lessons with Tani Waipa Saturdays at 11:00am Meet at Center Stage Call 808.886.8811 to reserve your spot. Limited to 12 people, 8 years and older.

GUIDED PETROGLYPH TOUR Kii pohaku (petroglyphs, literally “rock pictures”) may be the closest thing to a written language that Hawaiians used, and some are thought to be astronomical symbols, road signs, or markers of historic events. Join expert Michaela Larson for a moderate 1-hour walk back through Hawai‘i’s fascinating history, and see for yourself. If you visit the petroglyphs on your own, please respect this culturally sensitive area. Stay on the trail and do not approach the petroglyphs for photos or rubbings without permission of Waikoloa Security. These are fragile carvings, possibly thousands of years old, easily subject to damage and erosion. The best way to capture a petroglyph is with a photo in the late afternoon, when the shadows are long. Location: Meet lakeside next to Island Fish and Chips at 9:30am on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Lava trails are uneven and rough. Wearing closed-toe walking shoes, sunscreen, and hats are highly recommended. Don’t forget a camera and water.

Lesa Sawyer, entrepreneur and “give back” retail pioneer, is the heart and soul behind Giving Bracelets, a Kings’ Shops-based retailer that makes giving back to community its sole purpose. For every purchase of a bracelet, Giving Bracelets donates 10% to Project Hawai‘i, a Hawai‘i Island nonprofit whose mission is “Enhancing the Lives of Homeless and Poverty Stricken Keiki.” Lesa had started a successful handbag company in 2003; her bags were sold in over 250 specialty boutiques. Over the years, the company accumulated lots of excess leather from the production of the handbags. Wanting to repurpose the scrap leather, she started making bracelets. She wanted these bracelets to represent a greater purpose. Hearing the stories of so many neglected, abandoned, and abused children needing support and mentoring is what created Lesa’s passion for helping by donating to Project Hawai‘i. Amazingly, each bracelet is hand-made in the Kings’ Shops location! Stop in for a visit and while there, help the homeless keiki (children). Giving Bracelets also holds workshops; give them a call to find out when the next one will be held. 808.445.9951 GivingBracelets.com

recovery of Hawai‘i’s native wildlife through hands-on treatment, research, training, science education and cultural programs. The HWC is the first organization of its kind exclusively for native Hawaiian wildlife and provides state-ofthe-art care and rehabilitation for native animals as well as comprehensive wildlife rescue training and public education and outreach programs. The HWC is not a zoo or a preserve, it is a professional organization that focuses on treating and rehabilitating sick, injured and oiled wildlife for release back into the wild. 808.884.5000 HawaiiWildlifeCenter.org

The Waikōloa Dry Forest Initiative was formed in 2011 to protect, promote, and restore a native Hawaiian dry forest. After years of grassroots advocacy in the community and collaboration with the Waikōloa Village Outdoor Circle, the Waikōloa Dry Forest Preserve was established to protect many of the remaining native trees in the region. Since then, our community has come together to restore the forest, educate our keiki (children), and ensure a future for the lowland dry forest of Waikōloa. Restoring a forest ecosystem is an ambitious and complex undertaking, and it can look different depending on the landscape and the goals of the community. The goal is to rebuild a self-sustaining, native-dominant forest, and promote native forest conservation through outreach, education, and advocacy. The Waikōloa Dry Forest Preserve encompasses 275 acres of remnant lowland dry forest and protects some of the last remaining native trees in the region. It is a dry, rugged, and degraded area that is gradually being reforested by the community of native plants that once dominated Waikōloa. Hawaiian Cultural Center of Hämäkua Offering the Hāmākua community and the world an opportunity to immerse themselves in the culture and wisdom of Hawai‘i, the Hawaiian Cultural Center of Hāmākua offers an amazing array of opportunities for the community to deepen their connection to Hawaiian culture and each other. Sparked by Lanakila Mangauil’s passion for Hawaiian culture and his commitment to enriching the town of his birthplace, the Honoka‘a community rallied to help him create the Hawaiian Cultural Center of Hāmākua, which is four years old now. The center offers ongoing community classes, special workshops and summer programs, presentations for school and tour groups, community events, cultural exchange programs, and a minimuseum. 808.494.0626 | HCCOH.org

The mission statement of Hawai‘i Pacific Parks Association reads, “With the spirit of aloha, we inspire the discovery and stewardship of the natural and cultural heritage of Pacific island parks.” HPPA is a nonprofit cooperating association working in partnership with the National Park Service in Hawai‘i and American Samoa. Proceeds from the park stores support interpretation, educational programs, research projects, publications, and cultural activities. Since its creation in 1933, the association has contributed over $20.2 million in direct aid and other support to the parks. To accomplish this goal, HPPA: • Publishes and distributes educational books, guides and other materials; • Funds visitor center exhibits, park libraries, and museums; • Provides information assistance, sponsors free cultural demonstrations and festivals; • Supports conservation efforts such as the endangered nēnē recovery and hawksbill sea turtle projects. This 35-bed hospital is located in Waimea (Kamuela). The hospital’s vision is to treat the whole individual—mind, body, and spirit— through a team approach to patientcentered care, and ultimately to become the most healing hospital in the world. North Hawai‘i Community Hospital’s roots date back to the early 1900s when Lucy Kalanikumaikiekie Henriques and her cousin Lucy Peabody shared a vision of improving health care in North Hawai‘i, and created a trust fund and land endowment. In 1977, the Lucy Henriques Medical Center opened with an emergency room, x-ray lab, and medical

24

offices, with hopes for a full-service community hospital. In 1987, North Hawai‘i Community Hospital was officially incorporated as a nonprofit 501(c)(3). State and private funds allowed the hospital to be built and open in 1996 as an acute care facility that incorporated blended medicine in a unique setting. In 1999, the Lucy Henriques Medical Center merged with the new hospital. A clinical affiliation with The Queen’s Medical Center began in 2005, and in 2014, a corporate affiliation formally brought North Hawai‘i Community Hospital into The Queen’s Health Systems family of companies. 808.887.CARE | NHCH.com

Charles Reed Bishop founded Bishop Museum in 1889 in honor of his late wife, Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop, the last descendant of the royal Kamehameha family. The museum was established to house the extensive collection of Hawaiian objects and royal family heirlooms of the princess, and has expanded to include millions of objects, documents, and photographs about Hawai‘i and other Pacific island cultures. Today, Bishop Museum is the largest museum in the state, and the premier natural and cultural history institution in the Pacific, recognized throughout the world for its cultural collections, research projects, consulting services, and public educational programs. It also has one of the largest natural history specimen collections in the world. Serving and representing the interests of Native Hawaiians is a primary purpose of the museum. Bishop Museum inspires our community and visitors through the exploration, celebration, and perpetuation of the extraordinary history, culture, and environment of Hawai‘i and the Pacific. 808.847.3511 | BishopMuseum.org

Kings’ Shops opened in December 1991 as part of development associated with the Waikoloa Resort on the Kohala Coast. It was the first retail center, following the opening of hotels and golf courses. Roy’s was one of the first restaurants, bringing world-class dining to Waikoloa Resort. Lynn Rostau joined the team as general manager in June 2016. Lynn shares, “Our current vision is to create a place that offers a great shopping, dining, and entertainment destination in a culturally-rich presentation with a broad array of options—everything from buying a shave ice at Original Big Island Shave Ice, to jewelry at Tiffany & Co. We want to make sure we are catering to everybody, with every different type of desire. “There was always a great deal of intention to pay homage to the culture and to the kings—the ali‘i—and the land that the center was built on. Two years ago, the shopping center partnered with Bishop Museum to help showcase the cultural aspect of this area, and reignite that part of the intention for the center. As we decided to have a greater cultural presence, we really wanted to go to the authorities on that so we could make sure we were getting it right.” Kings’ Shops enjoys partnering with local organizations. One of their partnerships is with North Hawai‘i Community Hospital. Every December they present the Fashion for the Fight fashion show, benefitting and featuring cancer survivors and caregivers from the NHCH cancer center. The 2019 event is Friday, December 13 at 6:30pm. They also help raise funds for the Waikoloa Dry Forest Initiative by offering their Culinary Arts Under the Stars event every year, and they always feature a special garden showcasing dryland plants. The 2020 event is January 24. Hawaiian Cultural Center of Hāmākua is another of their community partners. They had a successful fundraiser for HCCH in 2018, featuring Keali‘i Reichel. It’s clear Kings’ Shops is much more than a shopping center. The management is immersed in community and culture in every activity they share, with events seven days a week: live music on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings; a farmers market, beginner ‘ukulele and lei-making lessons on Wednesdays; a cultural “talk story” and Hawaiian mo‘olelo on Thursdays; hula performances most Fridays; hula lessons on Saturdays; guided petroglyph tours, and even daily koi fish feeding. A golf putting course was installed in 2018—check it out, and participate in all the other free activities year-round!
