SELMA FR ANK AT 1 0 1 Everything in moderation, except family and friends. BY CONNIE BERRY

H Selma Frank, born in 1917, has lived in Vineyard Haven for 40 years.

er eyesight is failing, but Selma Frank’s hearing is sharp and her sense of humor is still going strong, all pretty amazing considering she’s 101. She lives in Tisbury in a cozy house she and her sister Rea designed in the late 1970s when they moved to the Island from Pennsylvania. There are support staff with Selma now, and Island friends who visit regularly. She has a niece and nephew, the children of her late brother Gilbert and his wife Doris, and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Continued on Page B12

Keith Chatinover was just elected as a new, and possibly the youngest ever, Dukes County commissioner. He has set his sights on being transparent and accountable to voters. As such, he will be holding seven town hall–style

meetings, one for each county town. These meetings are public, free of charge, nonpartisan, and intended to be an opportunity for voters to ask Keith questions, give him words of wisdom or caution regarding his new position, and to interact with one of the commission’s newest members. The Edgartown meeting will be at the Edgartown library on Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 6 pm until 7:30 pm. That’s all for this week. I’ve got to go catch a few winks. I’ve taken on a new dog as of this afternoon, and I’m not sure what the night has in store for us, other than the random barking that seems to come for no reason at all. Life with critters is always interesting. Have a great week. MVT

es, they were right. I am speaking about the weather forecasters. The day after Thanksgiving brought us freezing cold temperatures, resulting in sad-looking shrubs in my yard at least. When I looked, the leaves on my rhododendrons were curled up as tight as a child rolled up in a sleeping bag in an attempt to warm up a bit. It appeared so sad, dejected, and cold that I was sure it was doomed, but the next day as the sun warmed us all up, it sprang to life again, hopefully to color that corner of the yard again come spring. We added a new member to our family this past

weekend. A 5-month-old chocolate Lab cross arrived to join the four generations living in my house. It is officially the dog of my 22-year-old grandson, and was welcomed by everyone with smiles, kisses, and laughter except for the resident cat Spike, a.k.a. Doodle, who offered to take him for a guided tour of the outside of town. The dog, whom we named Chance, because we took a chance and adopted him from the dog rescue center, would love to play, but at the moment the cat is more interested in keeping him at bay with growls and hisses. It will work out eventually, mvtimes.com

Fortunately, Billy recovered and returned to the Island, where he married his wife Hazel and together they raised two sons. The day news spread of his death, WMVY happened to play a song in the morning that was recorded thanks to Peter, and they played a short clip of an interview with him. Later that day when reminiscing, they read a quote from one of his calendars; I immediately recognized the words I’d written for September 2018. Peter was so many things to so many people, sharing his honor is a growing FB community, soothing to all. I certainly loved the DJ side of him, getting to dance to a steady stream of groovin’ tunes. He is my favorite artist, and it was a thrill to hold that drawing in my hands, to carefully examine the pencil lines that described a landscape outside his Southampton, N.Y., home. Those lines were drawn by Porter’s own hand. It was a thrill I have never forgotten. I will miss you, Carol, your artistic sensibil-

I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing Thanksgiving, and if for whatever reason you don’t celebrate it, that you were able to take some time for yourself. What to do when dogs don’t like dogs. Hi Dogcharmer, Meet Eddie, an 80-pound “American kennel” dog. He is one of two strays we rescued two months ago. While he gets on with his canine companion, he is dog-aggressive toward all other dogs. Walking him on a leash is a nightmare. When he sees another dog in the distance, he immediately zeros in on it, staring fixedly at the dog, and as we get closer he starts to tug at the leash, growling, barking, and tries to get to the other dog. I manage to hold him off, drag him away, and once the dog is out of sight, he resumes good behavior. He is friendly toward people,

but his attitude to other dogs is intolerable. I am worried about him inflicting harm on another dog. We need your help and counsel. Anonymous

to get to the plate, and praising with voice and a treat when he passes it on a loose leash. (I’ve been asked 1,000 times, “What’s my training methodology?” And 1,000 times my answer has been, “It depends, I’m a depends trainer.” So, my correction for Eddie when he lunges for the plate will depend on what works. Ninety-nine percent of the time with the command “Leave it” and a “leash pop” or startling noise, the dog is cooperative in a couple of minutes. Next comes the practice of “Leave it” outdoors, with multiple and varied temptations that Eddie must ignore to earn his praise and treats, before introducing the strange dog that Eddie must “leave.” I want success to build on success before the “ultimate trial” of another dog. Before I moved to the Vineyard, having had over 800 appointments a year training dogs, half for behavior problems, I’ve met quite a few dogs that entered what I referred to as the “zone” when they saw another dog. They went completely berserk with aggression, making it virtually impossible to redirect their attention. In that case I used an e-collar — relying on tone, or vibration, or electric stim, or a combination. I might say “Leave it” immediately followed by tone

or vibe, and if necessary by stim. To get Eddie to ignore the chunk of chicken left on the sidewalk, it’s a quick “Leave it” followed by immediate tone followed by immediate stim. When timed properly by a pro, Eddie will “ignore” on tone to avoid stim, and soon thereafter cooperate on the verbal command alone. Today, as I write this, I received a thank-you from an Edgartown lady, the owner of a 10-pound dog for which I used stim on the e-collar, because for eight years her tiny dog went berserk at the sight of another dog. The lady can now cruise Edgartown and Boston without her dog totally embarrassing her by metamorphosing into Cujo at the sight of another dog. Failing to stop a very people-friendly 80-pound dog from seriously aggressing at all other dogs will often result in the aggressor being euthanized, which is devastating to the owner and often unnecessary with the intervention of a knowledgeable pro. MVT Good luck,

f fortunate, we find teachers in our lives who enhance the way we work and how we see the world. During my training in psychiatry, I found one such teacher, a psychiatrist named Richard Brown, who specializes in alternative treatments for psychiatric issues and illnesses. To this day, I periodically meet with him to discuss clinical challenges and to learn about new methodologies, and on several occasions, I have brought him to the Vineyard to give lectures and teach classes on subjects ranging from yoga breathing to drug interactions. Last year, along with his wife, Dr. Pat Gerbarg (the primary author), and colleague, Dr. Phil Muskin, Dr. Brown co-edited a comprehensive review of alternative psychiatric treatments called “Complementary and Integrative Treatments in Psychiatric Practice,” published by the American Psychiatric Association Publishing. The three editor/authors are all traditionally trained academic psychiatrists, and this is the latest of several books that they have written on out-of-thebox treatments in psychiatry. While traditional psychopharmacology is often effective, only about a third of individuals treated for depression reach full remission. For those who do not, medicine alone just isn’t enough. And while numerous new medications have been developed, rates of response haven’t budged in 30 years. In my decades of practice, I have learned that patients are far more likely to reach full remission if, in addition to taking medication, they follow recommendations regarding nutrition, light therapy, cardiovascular exercise, various kinds of psychotherapy, sleep hygiene, and yoga breathing. While these complementary treatments aren’t always effective, I am often astounded at how transformative some patients find them to be. There is abundant evidence that alternative treatments work for many people, but the strength of the evidence varies. Unfortunately, while traditional pharmacologic treatments are studied with large, well-executed research funded by the pharmaceutical industry, there is little incentive to fund research on treatments that are not on patentable. Nonetheless, given that medications alone frequently fail to achieve optimal results, it makes sense to augment medicinal treatments with safe alternatives and adjuncts, especially when credible research exists to support their use. “Complementary and Integrative Treatments in Psychiatric Practice” explores these options with scientific rigor. As Gerbarg, Muskin, and Brown point out, “Mind-body practices… that were on the fringe of health care for decades are now embraced by clinics, hospitals, schools and even the military.” During training, Dr. Brown was regarded as a maverick. Now, many of the practices that he has espoused for years have become mainstream. Even with all of the scientific evidence that is presented in “Complementary and Integrative Treatments in Psychiatric Practice,” it is hard to know which treatments to turn to first. There are rarely head-to-head comparison studies. As with traditional psychopharmacology, there are few long-term studies, and there are virtually no studies of the combination of treatments that any given person is likely to be on at the same time. Consequently, it is best — especially when symptoms are not severe

much an “antidepressant” as a promoter of well-being, especially for people who find themselves sweating the small stuff, struggling to pay attention, and experiencing low energy. Several people have reported that Rhodiola Rosea profoundly reduced symptoms of chronic Lyme. Gerbarg and Brown are well known for their books, articles, and lectures on yoga breathing. Their section on this technique, “Mind Body Practices” states that “breathing slowly and gently through the nose with eyes closed for a few minutes, particularly coherent breathing at four to six breaths a minute with equal time for inhalation and exhalation, reduces acute stress, worry, frustration, anger, and rumination. Practicing coherent breathing for 20 minutes at least five days a week balances and strengthens the stress response system, lowers blood pressure, and may reduce inflammation.” Apparently, this kind of breathing stimulates the vagus nerve that slows heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and enhances well being. I have used this breathing technique myself, and when I do, my blood pressure declines measurably, and I feel a sense of calm. The section entitled, “Neurohormones” focuses on melatonin, which is available in every pharmacy and most supermarkets as a sleep aid. Melatonin is a brain hormone, produced by the pineal gland, that is released following a circadian rhythm. Bright light during the day increases its night-time release. Its production is turned off by light BY CHARLES SILBERSTEIN, M.D. and turned on by darkness. Immediaterelease melatonin helps people get to sleep, and the sustained release formula helps people stay asleep. Melatonin is also a powerful antioxidant, regulates energy metabolism, and modulates immune function. It is useful in a wide range of neurological conditions as well as in cancer and some metabolic disorders. There are also studies that suggest its use for some kinds of anxiety, for treating late day confusion or “sundowning” in dementia, and for the treatment of a range of side effects these sections: from antipsychotic medication. An example of “Nutrients in PsychiThe final section of the book is on the atric Care” is SAMe — S-adenosylmethionine. A unique feature of this book is a set of decision trees that guide where to begin and how to combine treatments for best effects for each condition. It is advisable to start with low risk, common sense interventions like meditation, yoga breathing, exercise, light therapy, and low sugar and carb diets — all things that are part of a healthy lifestyle for anyone. Complementary treatments can have side effects, but overall they are fewer and less severe than prescription pharmaceuticals. But if symptoms are severe, it usually makes sense to start with traditional medications that are better studied for such symptoms. “Complementary and Integrative Treatments in Psychiatric Practice” is divided into six sections and includes chapters by multiple academicians. The sections include an overview of complementary and integrative medicines (CAIM), what they are, how they are studied and how widespread their use now is. Subsequent sections address nutrients, plant based medicines, neurohormones, mind body practices, and other technologies. Here is an example from each

POET’S C O R N E R

The Craic By Robin Harper The willowy girl with Jean Harlow hair And dimples that wink in Irish soap skin Starts to vogue in the kitchen. She’ll be on the tabletop soon enough Tonight’s craic has begun. The student old marrieds defend their Lucky Charms Twin sunburned arms Hugging their bowls of clovers and wishes Drowned in blue/pink milk By that manic leprechaun. On the musty Summer couch We sit you and I, there Like salt water creatures Flung out of the deep end It’s harder to stand. Rrrasp click, Rrrasp click The Zippo has the attention All thoughts on ignition Something, anything — flick it again Maybe it’s in denial? Then the creak and the slap Of the Summer screen door You’re next to me, no more Well that sounded final. I look up to witness, then pause, check in Wait for her to settle in But before she digs in I’m already running. Bare feet they feel nothing But air rushing under Ears hearing nothing but Breath and heart crash, full thunder — on Open eyes seeing nothing But a glimmer of track Who cares if it’s black I’ve got the wind at my back. And then I see you You turn at the cross One time it’s been done For once I have won. I run by a sidewalk gallery Ignore the whistles and guffaws This time I don’t pause I launch. Because, It’ll be a good craic. A year-round Island resident since 1997, Robin Harper lives in Edgartown with her husband and two daughters. This poem was inspired by one summer night when Robin was 18, the only American sharing a house in Oak Bluffs with 10 students from Ireland . The M.V. Times welcomes contributions to Poet’s Corner. “W

ho could imagine such a place?” said Arboretum founder Polly Hill. Her quote began an article commemorating the 20th anniversary of Polly Hill Arboretum in the Spring 2018 issue of Meristems, the arboretum’s publication. I can’t think of a better way to begin this article about the education program imagined, designed, and implemented by Betsy Dripps and Jill Bouck, who both retired this year. Betsy moved to the Vineyard in 1995. Jill was a summer kid who returned here to live after graduating from college. Both women were teachers, and they shared a love of nature and gardening that brought them to the arboretum as volunteers. Their enthusiasm is evident in their stated requirements for the school guides they train to work in the education program: Guides must love kids and must love being at the arboretum. It was clear in our conversation that Jill and Betsy easily fulfilled those requirements. We spent almost two hours talking about plants, garden design, ecology, ecosystems, conservation, nature walks with their own children, how they developed the group of volunteers, guides, and teachers who helped facilitate the extensive program. Twice every year, spring and fall, they visited every kindergarten through fourth grade in every school on the Island, between 700 and 750 students, to present a classroom discussion and prepare the children for their site work at the arboretum. Time in between was spent refining and enhancing each program.

“Kids are all scientists,” said Betsy. “We have to convince them to just walk out the door and look at things.” Observation and curiosity are encouraged, and every lesson is planned to provide high-quality learning opportunities. Each lesson aligns with current STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) curricula for the corresponding grade, and builds upon the previous year’s lessons. In last fall’s program, kindergarteners were shown seeds of local trees and plants as part of a discussion of the life cycle of plants. Photographs of plants they were expected to see when they visited the arboretum were given to each child. On their day in the field, children observed and identified the plants and seeds. Then they went to the Far Barn to draw two different seeds and package milkweed seeds to take home. By planting milkweed seeds in their yards around the Island, they’ll provide food for monarch butterflies, part of a project called Kindergarteners for Monarchs, devised by Betsy and Jill’s successor, Kendra Buresch. The first grade lesson plan examines the change of seasons and how different plants adapt. How do deciduous trees differ from evergreens? How do they survive the winter? As the children explored the arboretum the next day, they were expected to find and collect leaves and needles, to be separated into deciduous and evergreen groups, then to draw pictures of their specimens. Second graders learned about the life cycle of plants, how they produced seeds that would be dispersed by wind, water, and animals or pollinating insects. What conditions are needed for them to survive? This past spring, they were introduced to World Biomes and ecosystems, a requirement of the Massachusetts State

standards. Students worked with photographs of different areas of the world to learn about various climates and the plants and animals adapted to live in each. In third grade, the study of World Biomes continued, but in more depth. Students learned about dinosaurs and the evolution of trees and plants through three geologic periods. What plants at the arboretum developed during the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods? This visit was designed like a treasure hunt, with a map to follow. The Dinosaur Plant Tour directs students to specific sites where they will find information about each specimen. Dr. Fred Hotchkiss collaborated by loaning fossils from his collection, including a dinosaur footprint from the early Jurassic period. The fossils are on display in the Visitors Center. Field trips to the arboretum for both second and third grades focused on the deciduous forest Biome, which is where Martha’s Vineyard lies. Students looked for native plants, animals, birds, and insects that reside in our Biome. The fourth grade program gives students the opportunity to examine evergreen and deciduous plants using hand lenses. They will learn how certain plants adapted to the Vineyard climate and what conditions made them flourish. Students are encouraged to observe closely, getting right down on the ground with their magnifying glasses, then to draw the specimens they have studied. Besides the school programs, in the summer the arboretum loans out backpacks from the Visitors Center for self-guided tours, one for families with young children, one for older kids. The backpacks contain binoculars, magnifiers, a compass, a bird guide, plant guide, pollinator guide, a map of the arboretum with

suggestions about what to look for at each stop, a note pad for journaling, and a drawing pad with colored pencils. Betsy and Jill’s enthusiasm for passing along their love of natural science to the children was obvious. “To make kids excited about growing things from seeds” was a stated goal as they developed the education programs. Besides it all, Betsy and Jill clearly enjoyed working together. Jill said she had been working as a volunteer on the grounds when Betsy asked her to help. It has been a good partnership. Although Jill officially retired at the end of this past school year, both women were honored at a party in the Visitors Center just before Thanksgiving. Among their admirers were many of the teachers and guides they had worked with over the years. Tim Boland, the arboretum’s executive director, gave a speech filled with affection and accolades, then he presented them each with a reproduction Rietveld chair made by Tucker Hubbell. Having spent time with them, I can’t imagine those chairs will get much use. Jill has already returned to the arboretum as a volunteer on the grounds committee. Betsy is considering joining her, after taking some time off. Learning about the program and having spent time at the arboretum myself over the years, I know I would have loved having this kind of opportunity when I was a child. Observing nature and drawing what I see, learning about plants, watching things grow, are all activities that have captivated me all my life. Every child on our Island has had this wonderful chance. Every child on our Island knows these two women who have shared their love and knowledge of the arboretum and all its possibilities. MVT

ELDER LAW

The VA Aid & Attendance Benefit Rules Just Changed By Arthur P. Bergeron, Elder Law Attorney in the Trusts and Estate Group at Mirick O’Connell.

On October 18th, the Veterans Administration (VA) significantly altered the qualification rules for the Aid & Attendance Benefit. That benefit, available to anyone who was in active military service for at least 90 days, at least one day of which occurred during a period of war, provides a financial subsidy of up to $2,169 per month for a married veteran and up to $1,176 for a veteran’s widow or widower to help that person pay for the home care or assisted living costs. The benefit now will only apply to a person who can show that he or she needs assistance with at least two activities of daily living or needs regular supervision because of a physical or cognitive disability. The asset quali-

fication test is now much more specific. While your home is not a countable asset, if you have more than $123,600 in other countable assets, you will be disqualified. The VA will also look back three years and include as countable any asset that you transferred for less than fair market value. In addition, the VA will consider any purchase of an annuity to have been a gift subject to the 3-year lookback period. If you need more information on this, you can contact me at (508) 860-1470 or abergeron@mirickoconnell.com. THE SANDS OF CHRISTMAS

f

I had no Christmas spirit when I breathed a weary sigh, And looked across the table where the bills were piled to high. The laundry wasn’t finished and the car I had to fix, My stocks were down another point, the Dolphins lost by six.

They didn’t have a garland or a stocking I could see, They didn’t need an ornament-they lacked a Christmas Tree. They didn’t have a present even though it was tradition, The only boxes I could see were labeled “ammunition”.

And so with only minutes till my son got home from School, I gave up on the drudgery and grabbed a wooden stool. The burdens that I carried were about all I could take, And so I flipped the TV on to catch a little break.

I felt a little tug and found my son now by my side, He asked me what it was I feared, and why it was I cried. I swept him up into my arms and held him oh so near And kissed him on the forehead as I whispered in his ear.

I came upon a desert scene in shades of tan and rust, No snowflakes hung upon the wind, just clouds of swirling dust. And where the reindeer should have stood before a laden sleigh, Eight hummers ran a column right behind an M1A. A group of boys walked past the tank, not one was past his teens, Their eyes were hard as polished flint, their faces drawn and lean.

There’s nothing wrong, my little son, for safe we sleep tonight, Our heroes stand on foreign land to give us all the right, To worry about the things in life that really mean nothing at all, Instead of wondering each day if we will be the next to fall.

They walked the street in armor with their rifles shouldered tight, Their dearest wish for Christmas, just to have a silent night.

He looked at me as children do and said it’s always right, To thank the ones who help us and perhaps that we should write. And so we pushed aside the bills and sat to draft a note, To thank the many far from home, and this is what we wrote,

Other soldiers gathered, hunkered down against the wind, To share a scrap of mail and dreams of going home again. There wasn’t much at all to put their lonely hearts at ease, They had no Christmas turkey, just a pack of MRE’s.

God bless you all and keep you safe, and speed your way back home. Remember that we love you so, and that you’re not alone. The gift you give, you share with all, a present every day, You give the gift of liberty and that we can’t repay.

Medicare Part D and Pharmacies All Medicare drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans (HMOs, PPOs) have network pharmacies. Most pharmacies accept most plans. However, if you go to a pharmacy that is not in your plan’s network, your medications will not be covered, and you will pay full retail price. For 2019, the majority of the Medicare drug plans have preferred pharmacies and using them could save you money. Some plans have changed their preferred pharmacies so check to make sure the pharmacy you currently use will still be

the best come January 1st. Most plans have a mail-order program that allows you to get a 90-day supply of your covered prescription drugs sent directly to your home. Some mail order programs may have a cost savings, but there are times when using a preferred, local pharmacy could end up costing you less than mail order. Medicare open enrollment ends December 7th! If you want to change your Medicare plan call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).

hat pulled 11 kids ages 12 to 15 into the Oak Bluffs library on Friday, Nov. 16, at 3:30 pm, when they could have been hanging out, or perhaps should have been doing their homework? Each of them heard about a workshop offered on selfies, with a twist. Dena Porter, a professional photographer who has created unusual self-portraits herself (check out her website, denaporterphotography.com), explained afterward. “I thought it would be great fun to challenge young people to do something that they were very familiar with but to do it differently,” Porter said. “Most young people have access to a camera or phone with camera capabilities. And they have likely had a bit of practice taking selfies. I thought it would be fun to build on their technical knowledge about how to take photos by giving them props and challenges to accomplish during the workshop that would result in well-composed photos that say something about who the student is.” A professional educator in a former career, Porter dove right in and immediately grabbed the kids’ attention. She began by expanding their concept of a selfie. “A self-portrait isn’t always a shot of you. It doesn’t have to be just your face. You could modify a famous work and put yourself into it, you could take advantage of objects and light already around you.” Porter briefly projected a series of inspiring way-out-there selfies by a handful of contemporary artists, asking the kids questions to get them to reflect on what they were seeing and what they thought about it. The discussion was lively and thoughtful, and they at times saw things that the few adults in the room had missed. The energy increased exponentially when it came time for their first assignment. Porter pointed to the end of the table with an assort-

ment of perhaps bizarre but inspiring props that anyone could use in their selfies. These included items like a large square mirror and small color-changing fiber-optic lamp. “You can use motion, think about how close you want to be to the camera, think about light,” Porter told them. She said they were to do two shots they liked, one outside and one inside. “I want to see your best indoor shot. How do you take advantage of what is already right here? There might be something in this room, there might be something in the library, and the ground rules are to be as creative as you can. And you only have 20 minutes,” Porter said. The majority of students used their cell phones, but a few brought more advanced cameras. When they returned to the conference room, Porter had each of them email her the best indoor and outdoor shots, which Claire Ganz, who was assisting Porter, then printed while the students were out on their second assignment. When they returned to the room, the kids were super-excited to see their work printed out. High school sophomore Hannah Victoria Rose Majewski reflected after the workshop, “It was awesome. They’re challenges [in the assignments]; that’s good. I love photography. I like the props too. I found a book that I really like, and it had the word panic, and I like the band Panic at the Disco and I love books, so it was perfect and meaningful.” Thirteen years old, Rachel Arruda shared, “I like how it inspires you to do different things and things you wouldn’t normally do.” Caitlyn Clark, the Oak Bluffs children’s and young adult librarian who set up the workshop with Porter, asked the group, “Would you be interested in an art display with your work put up?” Her response to the group’s resounding answer of “Yes!” was, “You would love that? I know I haven’t seen the work yet, but I can feel the energy in the room.” MVT

With Lake Tashmoo in your front yard and all of Vineyard Sound at your back door, this is the perfect setting to recreate the summers of our childhoods - digging clams to cook & eat on the beach - swimming 'til our lips were blue while Dad fished - reading under beach towel "tents" until we were allowed back in the water. This enchanting beach house has a frontto-back living/dining room, offering views of both the Sound and Lake Tashmoo. The master bedroom is generous in size and its vaulted ceiling and views out to the Sound make it light and airy. The guest bedroom is just delightful with windows on three sides offering incredible views of the Sound and the lulling effect of the waves lapping against the shoreline is irresistible. The 2003 renovations of the home kept its vintage appeal while including all new Anderson replacement windows, updated kitchen, new exterior shingles and interior beadboard. At the same time, the owners undertook a complete rebuild of the separate studio/bunkhouse which has insulation, electricity and cable, oak flooring, all new drywall and skylights. There are two built-in couches/day beds, creating plenty of sleeping space for 6 - and the generous number of windows look out to big views of Lake Tashmoo. Come - be a kid again. $1,995,000. An impressive number of people come to the Uke Jam at Featherstone every week.

espite the cold, pitchblack evening, 13 spry, spirited men and women gathered together for their weekly ukulele jam. Walking in the door of the Pebble Gallery at Featherstone, I was warmly welcomed by Ruth Meyer, Marilyn Scheerbaum, and the initiator of the group, Deidre DeCarion, who began the jam six years ago. Deidre recalls, “I just felt like there needed to be some music, and I love music. And I love playing the uke (known to us plebes as the ukulele). I spoke to Ann Smith [director of Featherstone] and said, ‘Ann, how about if we start a ukulele group?’ and she said, ‘Fine,’ so I said, ‘Great!’ We started with four or five of us, and it grew by word of mouth, and we advertise it too.” Currently, there is a beginner class from 6:15 to 7 pm, and then the rest of the gang arrives. “In the beginning,” Deidre reports, “it was a two-hour evening. The first hour was instruction because most of the people couldn’t play at that time.” Marilyn Scheerbaum, one of the mainstays of the group, explained that their jam sessions don’t include musicians improvising solos and vamping on tunes, but rather the simpler casual type of social gatherings and communal practices. She said, “Deidre wanted this to be informal, open to anyone who has an interest, to always be free, and most of all to be fun! And the jam is fun. Most walk away with smiles. We have at least one member who claims this serves as his weekly therapy session. And it is a fine arena in which to find new friends.” Like a lot of Island groups, the uke jam grows during the summer. “The group averages about 12 to 15 during the offseason, but draws up to 40-plus during the summer months. Most people start on their own and wind up developing skills as they come to the jams,” Scheerbaum said. “Our members are great at helping anyone who is working on adding chord and/or strumming skills.” Why the ukulele, one might ask. “It’s very simple; not a very difficult instrument. That’s what I like about it,” explains DeCarion. Scheerbaum added, “Ukuleles are not expensive, and are small enough to carry around. Folks of all ages enjoy playing, so

often you have a mixed group of people. How nice is that!?” Once everyone had tuned up, the group jumped right off into one song after another. It was a democratic process in which someone rifling through their communal songbook would suggest a piece, they would all find the same page in their book, and away they’d go, counting off the rhythm and then playing and singing along simultaneously. Some of the songs were unfamiliar to me, like “Wagon Wheel,” “Walking After Midnight,” and “San Francisco Bay Blues,” but sitting off to one side, I at least could add my voice to old favorites of mine, “City of New Orleans” and “I’m a Believer,” bringing back fond memories of group sing-alongs in my Berkshire camp days. You can drop by anytime. They have extra ukes for you to borrow, whether soprano or baritone, but DeCarion assured me, “The fingering is all the same. And once you learn one of these you can play guitar, you can play mandolin, just about any stringed instrument. The tuning is different, though.” But whether you join to play or just come by to listen, heed her last words of advice, “Have music in your life!” MVT The ukulele jams take place every Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 pm, and the beginner class from 6:15 to 7 pm, at the Pebble Gallery at Featherstone Center for the Arts.

Left: Marilyn Scheerbaum plays during the jam. Below right: Gail Stevenson, who is in multiple bands on the Island, including tap dancing for the Flying Elbows, enjoys playing the ukulele. Below left: Bryan McShea plays with the group. Bottom: Shirley Craig sings along with the group while playing.
