Displays & Carpet Bedding
You imagine...we create!
Your ideas are designed, planted and grown on at the nursery and delivered ready for you to install. On delivery, the pre-rooted tiles of plants simply slide out of their trays onto a preprepared bed, transforming the bed into a colourful work of art within hours. The displays can also be used for exhibitions as they are delivered in mobile units. The price of an InstaPlant® carpet bed is approximately £135/m2 plus a £200 design fee. We also design and produce 3D InstaPlant® displays to order. 3D displays of up to 4 metres high can be produced. Each display is fabricated in steel with an internal irrigation system and is planted-up, grown on and delivered to site.
This art form has previously been limited to specialists, but InstaPlant® gives people who would not normally have attempted to create a decorative bed, the chance to have one produced and delivered to be installed with ease. All that we require is a drawing or photo to base the design on. We can also provide individual plants for anyone who prefers to plant the display up in the traditional manner. Carpet Bedding is now available to everyone!

Dad shared his birthday with some other notable personalities this year... The anniversary of Queen Victoria’s 200th birthday and Noddy’s 70th birthday were reasons for creating some brilliant InstaPlant® carpet beds. The 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings were also honoured suitably with several beds across the country. We now look forward 2020 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of V-E Day, celebrate 400 years since the Mayflower left the shores of Plymouth for America and there's likely to be a display or two celebrating the UEFA Euro Championships. So, what is the “Vision” for 2020? A question that we might ask before each year or season, but landmark years such as 2020 seem to be more poignant. I have certainly been trying to ensure that we at Osborne House - Victoria 200 InstaPlant Courtesy of English Heritage Kernock Park Plants have a clear 2020 vision for the decade ahead of us. We were discussing recently as a company, all the things that we had achieved at Kernock over the past few years, including of course some big, obvious stuff such as building glasshouses, new transformers, lighting installations, new roadways etc. We also recounted some of the smaller changes in structure, teams, management, processes and systems. I consider it a healthy thing that I often think about what might be different when I return after a few days away from the nursery! I love the fact that we are continuously improving, yet we’re never short of areas that we wish to develop further. So, what about our vision then?... Well, we’ve been working hard to ensure that the portfolio of product we offer, is ever evolving and improving. We have a list of over 60 new introductions that make their debut in this catalogue. As always, we have a plenty of brand-new plants, never seen before. Many are exclusive to Kernock Park Plants. There are also some varieties that are less well known, or from the past that we feel have a deserved place in the gardens of tomorrow. The range of new introductions span the categories of perennials, summer patio/seasonal plants, alpines and succulents. We’re really thrilled to finally see some of the new items come to fruition. To find more detailed information about the introductions, see page 4-6 of the catalogue.

Carpet bedding customers are offered plants with these suffixes a special royalty concession of 2p per plant.
2019 has been a year of many trials in other areas of the business. Production trials for new media, reduced peat, peat free, reduced plastic, reduced packaging, reducing plant miles. The consistent theme here is essentially helping to ensure environmental responsibility. It was 50 years ago today (as I write these notes), that astronauts first looked back on Earth from the Moon. At that time there was far less understanding, or concern about how we impact the Earth. In recent years, with heightened debate on issues such as plastic waste, biosecurity and global warming, I have a renewed intent to ensure that what we do as a company, is as sustainable, responsible and ethical as possible. The work done shows that we have already taken some great steps towards sustainability, and we will adopt new policies over the coming years as we become comfortable with the changes. So, with all of these changes and proposed improvements in mind, the summary of our vision, even with all the potential uncertainty that surrounds us, is essentially to continue in our efforts to delight, meet and exceed the expectations of our customers. “Growing great plants, with service you can trust” is our pledge. We look forward to helping you succeed in your 2020 Vision!

2019
We recently celebrated my Dad's 80th birthday. Many of you will know, he established the business with my Mum nearly 40 years ago. It has grown from nothing, slowly creeping down the hill, to become the nursery that we see today. Mr. H. Senior, (Richard) has given himself the job title of “The Odd Job Boy” in his “retirement years”. Whilst this might be understating his role a little, it is largely true! He’s an invaluable member of the team, working on projects, planning, organising, pushing and probing where it's needed. Just lately he’s been leading a project to replace a biomass boiler and attain renewable heat incentive. An example of a project that I could not devote the time to and I’m incredibly grateful for. I don’t feel too bad either, as he did manage a trip to Italy as part of the process, for the obligatory reconnaissance mission!

New Varieties for 2020: We are incredibly privileged to have such an extensive list of breeders and agents continuously offering new and improved genetics and a team looking for new ideas, or provide a new lease of life to old favourites. With over 60 fantastic new introductions coming through our intensive trialling process for the 2020 season, this season is set to be yet another great year of introductions! As always, our new varieties, span several product categories and genera. As always, there are too many to mention, but we highlight just a few here: We introduce to the catalogue several Canna including the well-known 'Tropicanna® Black' as well as a brilliant range of shorter, pot friendly CannaSol varieties, all with great foliage colour and form, as well as propensity to flower. Hardy Fuchsia is gaining popularity once again and Kernock have a lovely little find called ‘Dying Embers’ – with sumptuous, but dainty, almost black and cherry colour flowers on dark purple-black foliage. Foliage colour is a trend that Kernock believe has gained strength in recent seasons and introductions such as the Hippo series of Hypoestes from Proven Winners will reaffirm this trend. Magnificent ‘Red’, ‘Rose’, ‘Pink’ and ‘White’ make up a series within genus that would traditionally be isolated to houseplant status. These have also been proven to perform brilliantly in the garden, in both sun and shade. Another superb series emerging from the Proven Winner stable is the range of Nemesia known as Fairy Kisses. The initial release last year of ‘Pink Lemonade’ is now followed by three more stunners including ‘Vanilla Berry’ and ‘Citrine’. Amongst other phenomenal introduction is Lysimachia ‘Sunburst’, a perennial beauty with glossy green leaves and golden yellow flower; Hakonechloa 'Sunflare' with outstanding golden foliage which develops wine coloured blushing tips and margins as it matures; a Petunia known as ‘Mango Madness’ with peachy hues on orange coloured flowers; two Salvia to follow in the formidable footsteps of ‘Hot Lips’, these new offspring will be known as 'Amethyst Lips' and ‘Cherry Lips’. You will see some spring beauties making their way onto the catalogue, such as Bergenia 'Diamond Drops' – with smooth green leaves and short pure white flowers. Lilium formosana 'var pricei', one of my personal favourites, a lovely June flowering alpine Lily and the best salmonpink Pulmonaria that Kernock have witnessed called 'Shrimps On The Barbie’! Have a look through the preview below and find more information on these and our other fantastic plants in the catalogue.

Whether you are seeking an eye catching plant for the border, something to brighten up containers or for large double flowers for cutting, then the diverse Dahlia is just what you're looking for. With surprisingly little effort, they will continuously flower to their heart's content in a sunny spot until the first frosts arrive in late autumn. Over the years, we have selected and cleaned some of the best vegetative Dahlia varieties. Mostly bronze-leaved forms to offer as plug plants, rather than tubers, for instant rooting and uniform growth in the pot.

The others are less cold tolerant, but should survive in well protected gardens. Habits and flower colours vary. These can be planted out in spring or summer in garden containers, raised beds or borders as they will continue to flower through to the first frosts.
