Derelict versus Luxurious
Amman, the capital city of Jordan, is a modern city with numerous 5 star hotels. Existing near each one are a number of abandoned buildings, sometimes as close as next door or across the road. Inheritance laws mean that some buildings are left abandoned as no heir can be found, or there are too many and a decision cannot be made about what to do. Some are left when owners move overseas and don’t return. Others are unfinished buildings that ran out of money or investors pulled out during construction. The abandoned buildings show the dichotomy that exists in Amman, of the run down, the luxury and the historical, all existing together and none being hidden from the other. All images of abandoned buildings were taken within 1km of the hotel, most were a lot closer.
