There are two types of ice cream spoons: one is called disher, which can measure a portion and has a blade to make the ice cream off the spoon; another one is more like a normal spoon, just shaped especially for scooping ice cream.

bowl My focus is the disher.

 The ice cream spoon has a molded, polypropylene, one-piece handle

that improves durability, makes cleaning easy and prevents handle from coming apart. It also has a stainless steel bowl and components to prevent corrosion and insure longer life. The spring is also stainless steel.

 My ice cream spoon is apparently made in factory. It is a NSF certified

disher from Vollrath.

 It is one of the series of color-coded dishers. Each color represents a

size/capacity of spoon, for example, mine is a dark blue one which means it’s a ¼ cup spoon. The capacities is also clearly stamped on the top side of the gear rack for easy identification.

 It is constructed of a polypropylene handle with component parts to

be made from stainless steel.

 Extended grooved handle surface provides a sure grip for

comfortable use.

 The one-piece design of the handle prevents crevices from collecting

water or bacteria.

 Blade extends beyond bowl to prevent sticking.

 The ice cream spoon is to serve ice cream, measure a portion e.g.

cookie dough, or to make melon balls and meatballs. So it’s used in three ways in general:  To scoop ice cream (original usage)  To measure a portion (because the bowl is sized)  To make ball-shaped food (because it is designed to make “balls”)

 Originally, Mr. Calle observed that the soda jerks had a very hard time

scooping ice cream from the freezer boxes and into dessert dishes for serving and then he intended to design a mechanical tool to make that easier for the soda jerks. He may never have expected people would use the ice cream spoon to make meatballs.

 Ice cream spoon in general  The ice cream spoon or “disher” is invented by Alfred L. Cralle in

1897. The history of the it is fairly brief because the design is still in use more than 100 years later. Before the disher was invented, the most common method to get ice cream was using two spoons or ladles, and usually two hands.

 My ice cream spoon  I decided to get a ice cream spoon online because I had hard time

digging ice cream in the container, especially when the ice cream melted before. And I thought the spoon could be used to shape food too. Not only can I make ice cream scoops but also things like meatballs. The one I bought was made in the US, named Vollrath Jacob's Pride. I ordered it online and it was shipped to my place within a week. Source: http://blog.cooksdirect.com/2013/06/ever-wonder-who-invented-ice-cream-scoop.html

 The ice cream spoon is a kitchen supporting tool. It’s not

indispensable but intends to make certain process easier.

 On some level, owning an ice cream spoon is a reflection of the owner.

Since it is not hard to find an alternative of the disher, I can reasonably speculate that the owner cares about kitchen and may possess other supporting tools too, or the owner just likes to eat ice cream a lot (like myself).

 Ice cream is also a quick dose of nostalgia. “It’s familiar to people,

throughout their lives and histories. It brings back memories of childhood. It’s comforting.” So ice cream spoon is playing a role of mediating the person and his/her memories.

Spoon will detect the person who uses it.

Spoon closes the bowl when it detects the person eats too much ice cream.

This concept intends to track who eats ice cream and how much that person eats. After all, ice cream is not usually considered as healthy food. The ice cream spoon gathers the information when every time it’s used. When the person is holding the spoon, if it thinks the person eats too much ice cream, the bowl will be closed to give an alarm to that person. Also, the information the spoon gathers helps to solve the problem that who steals the ice cream!

This concept is designed in relation to nostalgia. Ice cream brings back people’s memories of childhood. Maturity grows along with taste in ice cream. With this insight, flavor tracker ice cream spoon is designed to detect and store the flavor information. As time goes by, the person can look back to see if s/he gradually changes his taste. The ice cream flavor is a trace of that person’s growth.
