Coming King Sculpture and Prayer Garden Sculptor Max Greiner, with The Coming King Foundation, created these works (from left) “The Great Commission” , “The Empty Cross” and several others. Courtesy Photo A visit from a rare white hummingbird was one of the highlights of 2018 for The Coming King Sculpture and Prayer Garden. “People came from all over just to get a glimpse and hopefully get a picture of this extremely rare bird including a professional photographer from National Geographic,” said Debbye Meszaros. “Our hope is that this same bird will visit us again this year.” The 24.5-acre park was built in 2004 by the The Coming King Foundation to share the love of Jesus through art, music and writing. The nondenominational, spiritual garden gives people an opportunity to hear the Gospel without going to a church. Last year was a big year for the garden, with new LED lights installed in the cross, which was made possible by a donation from Linda and Terry Forse. Crews also built a pavilion left of the cross. The garden was also featured in Christian Charisma Magazine in June and July. The annual Easter service, Son Rise, attracted over 3,400, 10 percent
coming from out of state. Additionally, a copy of the Lion of Judah was donated to Israel. In 2019, the garden was featured by Fox News during a tour of Texas feature report, and in January, Justin Case, a recording artist, filmed a music video on the grounds. And in April, there will be a Joran River Crossing sculpture placed at the entrance. On the attractions wish list for this year is a visitor center and gift shop. The Kerrville Police Department and the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office patrol the area, which is free and open to the public from 7 a.m. to midnight seven days a week. Guided tours also are available. Garden features Scripture tiles The “Path to Heaven” is at the entrance to the 300-foot-long crossshaped garden. It is made up of 77 scriptures that were picked by Robby Carpenter, a Biblical scholar from Kerrville. Sculptures The garden features a 77-foot, 7-inch
tall sculpture called “The Empty Cross” placed at the top of the hill. Three Christian artists — Beverly Paddleford, David Broussard and Max Greiner Jr. — donated more than $2 million worth of original art to the garden. Four prayer plaques The words and prayers on each plaque at the base of the cross were hand-picked by Greiner. Prayer Path and God’s Rock Garden Scriptures can be found along a trail that surrounds the cross-shaped garden. The prayer path was the idea of Kerrville resident Jeff Anderson and is lined with limestone prayer rocks inscribed by visitors. Events

of wildflower seeds along Texas highways each year as part of the state’s vegetation management program. There are scenic drives all over the Hill Country where visitors can spot wildflowers, three of which are in Kerr County.

Enjoy the outdoors River road. Courtesy Photo Kerrville is dotted with 19 parks that cater to almost any outdoor activity one could want. Kerrville River Trail The Kerrville River Trail was made possible in 2002 after nearly three decades of trying to get the project off the ground. Now, the trail has become one of Kerrville’s most beloved additions to the community. The trail, a 10-foot wide concrete path, runs
from the Riverside Nature Center to KerrvilleSchreiner Park, offering a pleasant way to get close to nature. The path gracefully rolls along the banks of the Guadalupe River where runners, walkers and bikers enjoy the trail year-round. Trailheads are spread along the continuous multi-mile trail, giving people the opportunity to take a break and sit down and grab water.
Kerrville Skate Park Kerrville has one skate park in the Singing Wind Park, 2112 Singing Wind Drive, located near the Municipal Olympic Pool. The lighted Kerrville Skate Park offers a bit of a break from boring, straight asphalt roads to a trick-conducive half bowl concept. The half-bowl design allows enough room to do higher stakes tricks.

The Kerrville Folk Festival returns on May 23. KDT file photo
Folk music lives in Kerrville Folk music fans gather every year for a celebration of songwriters and new talent at the Kerrville Folk Festival, which is entering its 48th year. “Every year is different, and yet every year is the same,” said Rosemary Weiss of Columbus, Ohio, who regularly attends the festival. “Every second you spend on the ranch makes you remember what life is supposed to be like: spreading kindness, happiness, tolerance, joy — and music. You can’t forget the music.” The festival was founded by Rod Kennedy, a sought-after concert promoter, and Peter Yarrow, who found fame with the 1960s folk music trio Peter, Paul and Mary in 1974. Their mission was to tilt the spotlight and make it shine on unsung songwriters. Dalis Allen, the festival’s producer, said the celebration has a laidback vibe, despite inevitable storms that roll through Quiet Valley Ranch during the 18-day festival. “We always have rain, and we have to deal with it,” Allen said. “Our crowds are just the best and remain in the seats under umbrellas and tarps, as long as the music continues.”

Swim, ride & run to the finish line The city of Kerrville offers a variety of ways to exercise during the summer. There are plenty of places to swim, ride, or jog in the picturesque Hill Country. However, the 8th annual Kerrville Triathlon Festival gives people an opportunity to do all three in one weekend. The sprint distance triathlon and the kids fun run start at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, while the quarter distance triathlon starts at 7:30 a.m. and the half distance triathlon starts at 8:20 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 29. Packet pick up and race start is at Inn of the Hills Hotel and Conference Center, 1001 Junction Highway. The Kerrville Triathlon began in 2011 with the idea of bringing out the beauty of the Texas Hill Country, according to the event’s website. The triathlon continues to be a rousing success, as more than 6,000 people have
crossed the finish line since its inception. People rave about the Kerrville triathlon on its website, with multiple people ranking it among their favorite courses. Each distance of the triathlon starts with a swim in the Nimitz Lake. The bike course, meanwhile, takes participants through Kerrville’s downtown. The run course is held entirely on the Kerrville River Trail, which begins at Louise Hayes Park all the way to Kerrville-Schreiner Park. Participating in the half distance triathlon costs $205, while the quarter distance is $135. The Debra Zapata Sprint Triathlon costs $85 and the kids fun run is free. People interested in participating in the triathlon can register at kerrvilletri. com. Businesses interested in sponsoring the triathlon can email sponsorship@highfiveevents.com.
