A PUBLICATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
Chairman’s CORNER
Spring is in the air, and we are all enjoying the beautiful “Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce weather” that brings so many visitors to our area this time of year. Bluebonnets are out, and we have experienced just enough rain to make things green and gorgeous. It’s a great time to go for a morning walk on the Kerrville River Trail or take a drive in the country. We have all been enjoying outdoor activities in our community. In March, the Leadership Kerr County class did another amazing job with EasterFest. My hat’s off to all of the class members, steering committee and cook teams who helped make the holiday weekend special. We enjoyed live music, a car show, barbecue and chili cook-off, as well as other fun activities for the whole family. All of this for a great cause, while developing future leaders in the process. Bravo! As I write this, we are preparing for another great Chamber Golf Classic at the beautiful Riverhill Country Club. This is a great way to enjoy fellowship with friends, coworkers and business associates, while supporting the important work of the chamber. As always, the chamber staff has worked hard to provide a great event for our members. While we are on the subject of events, mark your calendars for Saturday, June 2. That’s the date of the chamber’s newest event, Summertime BBQ Fundraiser at Apache Rifle Works. Along with food and a host of fun activities, the day will be highlighted by a drawing of 30 guns. If you are a firearms enthusiast, you have to come check this out. Drawing tickets are limited — only 750 available — so for only $100 each, you have a great chance to win a gun. Tickets are available at the chamber office, MG Building Materials, TJ Moore Lumber Yard, the Creek Boutique and A&A Tire Service. Don’t miss out — tickets are going fast. Finally, I want to implore all of our members to get out and vote in the May elections. The chamber is doing a great job of representing your interests in governmental affairs, but nothing can substitute the power of the ballot. Thanks to the chamber and Schreiner University for hosting a candidate forum for all the Kerrville City Council candidates. It was a great turnout, and we all became better informed voters in the process.

Current owner of Brinkman Commercial Properties, Bruce Stracke. Photo by Michael Anglin
Brinkman Commercial Properties is expanding. This well-known company has grown considerably since 1999 when Harvey Brinkman first opened its doors, and the timing was right to add a second location. The original office at 821 Earl Garrett St. remains open and is staffed by two agents, while the new location at 615 Earl Garrett St. has become the main office. This esteemed company, through steady growth and a sterling reputation, is recognized today as the only exclusive commercial and development property brokerage in the Hill Country. When current owner Bruce John Stracke moved here with his family from Utah in 2006, he worked in development, bringing with him a solid background in commercial real estate, development, design and building in California, Utah and Texas. In 2015, he purchased Brinkman Commercial Properties from Harvey and now leads a team that provides invaluable expertise to buyers and sellers of commercial property and those seeking assistance in development and design services. Bruce has the perceptive vision, as well as technology and development experience to ensure Brinkman Commercial Properties remains a valued asset to the community. He is particularly passionate about the growth of Kerrville and lauds the commitment and efforts of City Manager Mark McDaniel. “Mark is a great city manager who has given opportunity to all the citizens of Kerrville to participate in their own community’s future,” Bruce said. Bruce also is an enthusiastic supporter of Kerrville 2050 and sees the city’s comprehensive plan to be on target with the best interests of the community. He is pleased at the commercial changes going on in downtown Kerrville. “Many young people are opening businesses downtown and doing their part to create the town they will lead in the future,” Bruce said. “Some of them have been gracious enough to let me help them with their endeavors. These young entrepreneurs bring

new energy to downtown, and provide new shopping and entertainment venues to attract a younger crowd, including those who may not have considered shopping here before.” He sees these new boutiques, galleries, restaurants and shops as an enhancement to the unique charm of Kerrville that sets the city apart from other areas of the Hill Country. Brinkman Commercial Properties employs a team of seven — including one broker associate, four agents and an apprentice — and is focused and committed to the city’s progress. Each one brings their own expertise to the table, enabling them to find the best commercial fit for their clients, and provide superb service for their buyers and sellers. Current listings on the company’s web page include tracts of land for business, industrial and manufacturing usage, downtown commercial space and a former church touted as an “ideal site for professional and medical offices.”

“It is an honor for Brinkman Commercial Properties to be the Business Spotlight this month and to host the May business mixer,” Bruce said. “We have been a member of the Kerrville (Area) Chamber of Commerce since 1999 and, as we grow and expand into our new office, we look forward to this opportunity to build and continue relationships in the tradition Harvey started 20 years ago.” In addition to the KACOC, Brinkman Commercial Properties also is a member of the Kerrville Board of Realtors and Austin Board of Realtors.

Get to Know Volunteer Spotlight
Q&A with Allison Bueche Vice president of marketing and communications at Mo-Ranch
Q: What is your volunteer role with the chamber and how long have you served in that role?
A: I have volunteered with the chamber in a variety of ways over the years, including Kerrfest committee, membership drive, Operation Thank You program and its banquet committee. I recently joined the chamber’s board of directors and have served since January.
Q: What other organizations do you volunteer with and for how long?
A: Hill Country Charity Ball board member (August 2016–present),
Kerrville Junior Service Guild board member (September 2014– present), Kerr County Connection board member (July 2014– present), Former board member of Hill Country Young Professionals (July 2013–December 2016), former board member of Kerrville Christmas Lighting Corporation (July 2013–December 2016) and former board member of Executive Women’s Club (June 2013-16).
Q: How has volunteering impacted or changed your life? A: Volunteering has impacted my life in many ways. The most
important thing you can give is your time. Kerrville is a place we all choose to call home, and it’s been amazing and a blessing to see it improve and grow with its amenities and quality of life. During my time volunteering, I’ve made great friends and developed a love and passion for bettering this community.
Q: How is volunteering both rewarding and challenging for you?
A: It’s so rewarding to help others. I am a “yes” person, and I love
volunteering in a community that is as great as Kerrville and the Hill Country. The challenging part is balancing my personal and work life between all of that. I have to take a step back sometimes and evaluate what’s on my plate and not overwhelm myself.
Q: Who inspired you to start volunteering? A: I’ve always loved giving my time to worthy organizations
and the community, but my involvement really catapulted after going through the chamber’s Leadership Kerr County program. It allowed me the opportunity to become close friends with classmates who represented a broad spectrum of businesses here, learn about the community and open the door to getting involved with a lot of different organizations.
Q: When not volunteering, where do you work or spend your time?
A: I am the vice president of marketing and communications
for Presbyterian Mo-Ranch Assembly and have been on its staff since December 2014. Right now, my free time is consumed with the MBA program I am enrolled in with Schreiner University. Otherwise, I enjoy spending my spare time with my family and friends, my dogs, running and traveling.

Despite the harsh wind that swept over the Riverhill Country Club golf course on April 16, it was a picturesque day to play a round a golf. This was welcoming news for the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce, which hosted its 23rd annual Chamber Golf Classic that day. The Chamber Golf Classic is one of the chamber’s major fundraising events during the year and 46 businesses sponsored the event. • Ken Stoepel Ford-Lincoln was the title sponsor. • Wells Fargo and Kerrville Public Utility Board served as gold sponsors. • James Avery Craftsman Inc. sponsored the food. • Garrett Insurance Agency Inc. was the beverage cart sponsor. • Peterson Health sponsored the merchandise. • 103.7 The Buck was the putting contest sponsor. • SWBC Mortage, Century 21 The Hills Realty and Art Bell sponsored the closest to the pin competition. “From the sponsorship standpoint, everyone gets to see our name out here on the banners, as well as having a team participate,” said Roy Thompson, president and CEO of Texas Hill Country Bank, which was one of the sponsors of the Chamber Golf Classic. “There is a lot of good camaraderie, which is really the main point of the chamber tournament. It raises good funds for the chamber. With a community, you have to have an effective chamber long-term if you are

going to have an effective community, and we have a great chamber and a great staff.” But the Chamber Golf Classic isn’t just a fundraiser. It also acts as a chief networking opportunity, a chance for chamber members to briefly diverge from the stresses of work and play a round of golf with coworkers on a pristine afternoon. “This is an event for our members to have a good time,” said KACOC Vice President Rachel London. “It’s also a fundraiser for our chamber,” said Gregg Appel, Chairman of the KACOC Board. “It’s a time for our members to get together, and have some fun and fellowship, and just interact with each other. There are multiple purposes for it.” Participants definitely seemed to be enjoying themselves
as they filtered into the Riverhill Country Club for the awards ceremony. Teammates posed for pictures and shared laughs during dinner. Twenty-four teams participated in the Chamber Golf Classic, and each team consisted of four members. Bark Avenue Pet Spa posted the lowest score during the tournament, winning first place. Team members included Dave Edwards, Ricky Agusto, K.C Lim and Chase White. Mark Hensley on the Bank of the Hills’ team won the putting contest. The event raised approximately $13,842. The Summertime BBQ Fundraiser on June 2 at Apache Rifle Works will be the next major fundraiser for the chamber.

Leadership & EDUCATION Leadership Kerr County
Q: Where in the world was LKC in April?
A: Leaders were on the go for travel & tourism class
By Lisa G. Winters Members of the Leadership Kerr County Class No. 33 were on the go from start to finish on April 17. The monthly focus, “Travel and Tourism,” offered students the insight of the many Kerr County industries, organizations, businesses and events that attract visitors and tourists, as well as support our local residents as they enjoy the unique attractions in the community. Coordinated by steering committee member Michael Anglin, the day began with sessions at The Museum of Western Art. Presenters in the morning discussed area assets, such as art, music, ranching, hunting and tourism. Those presenters included Executive Director of MOWA Stephanie Turnham, Executive Director of the Kerrville Convention and Visitors Bureau Charlie McIlvain and Executive Director of the Kerrville Folk Festival Mary Muse. Then, the class traveled to two area camps, Heart O’ the Hills Summer Camp for Girls and Texas Lions Camp, for presentations on the tremendous impact camps have financially on the economy, as well as the lifelong benefits for youth of all ages. The afternoon consisted of field trips to the Kerrville-Kerr County Airport, the D-BAT Kerrville Sports

Complex and the KCVB. Before ending the day, the class was able to celebrate the success Photos by Michael of their class project, Anglin/ARTIFEX42 EasterFest, which raised more than $10,000. They will present a check to four nonprofit organizations with enough proceeds to offer scholarships to the chamber for the next class of LKC.

Nominations for Class No. 34 will begin this summer, following graduation in May.
About LKC The Leadership Kerr County program is offered through the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce. CoffeeTalks & Seminar Series
April CoffeeTalk in review From Staff Reports April’s CoffeeTalk was standing room only. More than 35 people attended. Kristin Mudry, “The Welcome Lady,” of Kerr County Greeters gave a great presentation on “A GrassRoots-to-Eagle-Eye View of Who’s Arriving in Kerr County, from Where and Why.” The presentation was based off data she gathered from reviewing all the newcomer visits from 2012 to present, analyzing trends and preparing a high-level summary. This analysis can not only be useful for the Kerrville Comprehensive Plan 2050, but it can aid area businesses and nonprofit organizations in planning for their future growth based on who’s been coming to the area and what keeps them here, according to a news release.
What’s Brewing CoffeeTalk will take a break from June through August, but will reconvene in September. As the committee continues to book speakers for the remaining months of the year, details will be in future issues of BusinessLink. Look for details on future CoffeeTalks in the next issue of BusinessLink.
About CoffeeTalks CoffeeTalks are generally on the first Tuesday of every month, excluding the summer, from 8 to 9 a.m. at the chamber office. Are you a chamber member with a topic to share? Contact Angela North at 896-1155 or angie@kerrvilletx.com.

Mixer snapshots Story by Rachel London | Photos by Tim Huchton The April After Hours Business Mixer, which was co-sponsored by St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and MacDonald Companies, was well-attended by more than 130 people who came to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church’s Tucker Hall. St. Peter’s Episcopal Church’s the Rev. Bert Baetz talked about the history and involvement of the church. In 1888, St. Peter’s became the first denominational church built in Kerrville on land donated by Capt. Joseph A. Tivy. Although its in the same location, there have been renovations and expansions since, including church offices, the chapel and 10 classrooms. St. Peter’s Episcopal School opened in 1969 and currently enrolls 138 students in preschool through kindergarten. It is the only school in the Texas Hill Country that is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children. Justin MacDonald of the MacDonald Companies spoke about the business, which is a family-owned group of companies specializing in developing, building and managing multi-family neighborhoods across Texas. The focus in rural and small metro areas allows the business to provide affordable, sustainable and quality housing with comfort in mind for communities in need. Thank you to the members who donated door prizes for the mixer, including Broadway Bank, Barb’s Flower Barn, Apothecary Shoppe, Pitch Black Window Tinting, Merle Norman Cosmetics, The Kerrville Daily Times, NEXMOV, So Fast Printing and Body Pure Holistic Center. The Jackpot was $1,500, which was won by Bob Finch, an individual member of the chamber. Congratulations, Bob! Thank you to the jackpot sponsors: H-E-B, Rev-FM 94.3, 103.7 The Buck, Jeff Talarico and Associates of Ameriprise Financial, as well as LeMeilleur’s RV-Truck and Equipment Repair Co. Those interested in being a jackpot sponsor, which is a great advertising opportunity for only $100, contact Angela North at 896-1155.

Thousands hop to Flat Rock for EasterFest 2018 By John Sniffen Approximately 3,500 people enjoyed spectacular spring weather during EasterFest 2018 at Flat Rock Park, according to Festival Co-chairman Jake Williams.
“We had phenomenal weather and the people really enjoyed themselves,” said Williams, a member of this year’s Leadership Kerr County class.
The March 31 event turnout included contestants for the barbecue and chili cook-offs. The barbecue contest drew 83 entries, while 40 Chili Appreciation Society International certified cooks and 20 amateurs entered the chili cook-off.
The Easter bunny arrived via firetruck at noon, then posed with kids, many of whom had snatched up candy-filled plastic eggs during one of several egg hunts. Kid-friendly games and other activities also were popular.
Los Slow Cookers BBQ Team of Uvalde, lead by Head Cook Wade Carpenter, won grand champion and first place for brisket in the barbecue contest. Carlos Calzado and his team from Bronx, New York, won reserve grand champion and first in the ribs competition.
Those of a more sedentary nature brought folding chairs and either positioned them in front of the stage to listen to live music, or found shady spots to relax in, enjoy the culinary offerings or just take in scene.
Other first-place finishers were Jimmy Rather of Hobbs, New Mexico, for beans; Charlene Boyce of Kerrville for salsa; and Manuel Moreno of Borger for chicken.
Colorful and shiny classic cars and motorcycles garnered lots of attention, while back at the judging tent, the barbecue and chili entries were subjected to rigorous inspection and digestion.
In the CASI cook-off, John Goforth of Comfort placed first, while Kathy L’Huillier and her Sweat-it-Out Chili team from Comfort won for showmanship. Sean Griffith of San Antonio won the amateur chili competition.
Noting that it takes “the whole city” to put on an event like EasterFest, Williams — who also is director of the Hill Country Youth Event Center — was thankful for the sponsors who donated money, or in-kind goods or services.

30 Gun Drawing tickets are $100 each and there is no limit on winnings or number of tickets you can purchase, but only 750 tickets were printed. One ticket is good for all 30 drawings, so it’s only $3.33 per chance with the odds being 1-26. Those entering the drawing do not need to be present to win, but the winner must pass a background check to claim a gun, as Federal guidelines will be followed. KACOC reserves the right to make substitutions as needed, depending on availability.

“It’s a great opportunity to come out and enjoy some food and fellowship. Nice opportunity to see all of your chamber community. … I just enjoy — whenever we have these events — seeing everyone turn out and support the chamber,” Koenig said. “It’s a good opportunity to support the chamber, but it’s also a good opportunity to win some guns.”
