A PUBLICATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

Chairman’s CORNER

What a great time we had at the 2018 Chamber Choice Awards Banquet! With all of the rain and flooding we have experienced, I wondered if the attendance would be affected. From what I could tell, the rain didn’t keep anyone away. Speaking on behalf of Centennial Bank, our title sponsor, we were honored to bring you this event. First of all, I want to acknowledge and thank the banquet committee for their hard work and great job in putting together the event. As usual, the chamber staff was “all hands on deck” and totally rocked the “boots and bling” theme. The Inn of the Hills Hotel & Conference Center provided a great venue and it was packed! We sold out of tickets 10 days before the event and there were no empty seats. The evening featured a live band, live and silent auctions, an awards presentation, a review of the year’s accomplishments from yours truly — I have a lot to say about this but will save it for next month — and the introduction of the 2019 Board Chair Lisa Winters of Peterson Health. I could not be more excited to have Lisa stepping into the role of board chair for next year. Having served with her on the chamber Board for the past few years, I can tell you that Lisa is someone that flat out gets things done! During her time on the Chamber Board, she has done an outstanding job leading our Communications Committee and lent her leadership skills to Leadership Kerr County. When not serving the chamber, Lisa is the director of marketing and community relations at Peterson Health. I am certain Lisa will continue to take the chamber to new heights in 2019! As the name implies, the Chamber Choice Awards Banquet is a time to honor our best and brightest community leaders. I certainly would be remiss not to add my congratulations to the following welldeserved recipients: • Phyllis Ricks — Kerrville Daily Times Bill Dozier Citizen of the Year • Judy Wilson — Women’s Chamber Outstanding Woman of the Year • Stephen Foley — Chamber Ambassador of the Year • Habitat for Humanity — Mary C. Williams Volunteer of the Year • Sylvia and David Fritz — Best Business Person(s) of the Year • LeMeilleur’s RV-Truck and Equipment Repair Co. — Chamber Hall of Fame Award Congratulations to all of our recipients. They are all winners and lead by serving others. Well done!

Shortly after the armistice on Nov 11, 1918, that ended World War 1, Kerrville native sons L. D. Garrett and W. G. Garrett, Jr returned to Kerrville from their service. Soon after that, they established Garrett Insurance Agency. This year we proudly celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the agency. On October 4, 1918, only 5 weeks before the armistice, Victor Earl Garrett, the younger brother of L. D. and W. G., was killed in the battle of the Argonne while leading his men against a German machine gun emplacement. His loss had a lasting impact on his family that has continued for generations. Earl was blessed with leadership traits, a strong Christian faith, natural charm and other attributes that set him apart from others. We pause this month to pay tribute to his memory and the lasting impact that his brief life and solid witness had on his parents, six siblings, his brothers in arms and the City of Kerrville. In a short span of 24 years, Earl set the bar very high for countless others to aspire to. We are thankful for the life of Earl Garrett.

Ken Stoepel Ford-Lincoln, built reputation tough Story and photos by Nancy Foster “No Unhappy Customers” is the prominent sign that greets customers in the main showroom of Kerrville’s Ken Stoepel Ford-Lincoln, and it sums up the philosophy of this long-standing dealership, said General Manager Terry Massey. “Trust and relationships are values we continually instill in our employees, and each one of our team (members) is committed to this philosophy,” Terry said. “Our employees come here each and every day to do a good job and earn our customers’ trust. They are good, wholesome people who do their job and do it well.” Terry, a Kerrville native and Tivy High School graduate, has been with the dealership for 27 years and leads by example. His strong leadership and customer service skills are evident as he multitasks his way through daily interactions with employees, corporate dealings and customers.

The company Ken Stoepel, founder of the dealership, had such fond memories of youthful days spent at a Hill Country camp

that, in 1966, he chose a location on Junction Highway for his first Ford dealership. Ken was known to be a visionary and savvy businessman, so when sales increased in 1969, he moved the company, to its current location, 400 Sidney Baker St. South, on a six-acre sprawling complex that now houses a showroom, garage, offices, Ford Quick Lane Tire and Auto, as well as an expansive car lot. Today’s company houses both Ken Stoepel Ford and Ken Stoepel Lincoln under one roof, employing 70 people, including six members of the Stoepel family. Departments include management, sales, leasing, finance, accounting, IT and repair. Its reputation has brought recognition, including earning three coveted Ford Presidents Awards — bestowed on dealerships that rank in the top 10 percent for customer service relations — within the last six years. Stoepel’s wall of accreditations are numerous and a testament to expertise in the automotive industry, stellar customer service and exceptional community involvement. Latest recognitions include Best New Car Dealer and Best Oil Change at Quick

Lane awarded by The Kerrville Daily Times’ 2018 Best of Kerr County Readers’ Choice Awards.

The customers Ken Stoepel Ford-Lincoln draws customers from a fivecounty radius. Many are first introduced to Stoepel’s dealership through Quick Lane, where 1,200 vehicles are serviced and repaired each month by a team that instills trust by superb customer relations, top-notch mechanical work and Stoepel’s “best price guarantee.” Quite frequently, customer satisfaction leads to a return visit when the time is right to lease or buy a new or used vehicle. Ken Stoepel Ford-Lincoln’s sales staff works hard to dispel the age-old suspicion many people have of car salespeople. They work diligently with each customer to understand their needs and wants in order to match them with the best car, truck or SUV. Follow-up surveys, calls and feedback enable management to maintain the high standards of the decades-old company that is built on trust, pride, reputation and friendly, superb service.

The vehicles Consistent best sellers are the Ford F-150, F-250, Escape and Explorer, Terry said. Although, excitement is building over the new Lincoln Nautilus and return of the ever-popular Ford Ranger, both anticipated at year’s end. The new Bronco is expected to be released in 2020. Each new model brings with it new technological advances. “Ford stays on the cutting edge of technology, and we

embrace it with ongoing training to keep our team current with the latest innovations,” Terry said. Because 96 percent of buyers do pre-purchase research online, Ken Stoepel Ford-Lincoln stays current with new and used inventory on its website. And for those looking for a pre-owned vehicle, Ken Stoepel Motors, at Five Points, 228 W. Main St., recently opened.

Community involvement “It is important for us to be involved in our community,” Terry said. “We consider it a personal goal to support as many charitable organizations and groups as possible. To date, that includes over 100 groups, local events and fundraisers.” Ken Stoepel Ford-Lincoln has been a Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce member since 1966, and currently holds Diamond Membership status. Terry sings praises, remarking that the chamber aligns with their philosophy. “They really care about the business community and want each of us to survive and thrive,” he said. “For me personally, membership has been an eye opener. I’ve learned so much and have come to realize how in-depth the chamber is. From President/CEO Walt Koenig on down through their entire team, they are all great.” As a former board member, Terry encourages his staff to attend chamber functions, serve on committees and participate in Leadership Kerr County. Chamber Choice Awards Banquet Gregg Appel, Brian Bowers, Fred Gamble and Lisa Winters. The banquet served as the introduction of Lisa as the 2019 chairwoman of the board. A large portion of the annual event was used to honor the outstanding community leaders and celebrate the chamber’s accomplishments over the past year. Recognized as this year’s annual awards recipients were: • Women’s Chamber Outstanding Woman of the Year — Judy Wilson. • Chamber Ambassador of the Year — Stephen Foley. • Mary C. Williams Volunteer of the Year — Habitat for Humanity. • Best Business Persons of the Year — Sylvia and David Fritz. • Chamber Hall of Fame Award — LeMeilleur’s RV-Truck and Equipment Repair Co. • The Kerrville Daily Times Bill Dozier Citizen of the Year — Phyllis Ricks.

Award presentations The Women’s Chamber Outstanding Woman of the Year Award, which “symbolizes a woman that has had a history of leadership in the Hill Country,” was presented by Jo Carol Smith. Jo described Judy’s life as a “great adventure to improve lives of abandoned and abused children” and referenced her friends who called Judy a child advocate. The Chamber Ambassador of the Year Award was presented by Janie Altgelt, who described two-year ambassador Stephen’s work as going “above and beyond what is expected (and) engaging has been a big part of his work this year.” The Mary C. Williams Volunteer of the Year Award was presented by last year’s winner Allison Bueché. This year, instead of one individual, a team of volunteers was recognized because they make an “active and conscious choice to give their time and skills every weekend. Habitat for Humanity has spent almost 5,000 hours of their own time this year to work for families to create opportunities.” The Best Business Persons of the Year Award was presented by last year’s winner, Mike Wittler. He described Sylvia and David of Mini Mart as “two people who have contributed to the community and economy over the years.” The Chamber Hall of Fame Award was presented by Pat Murray to LeMeilleur’s RV-Truck and Equipment Repair Co. who “set gold standard in customer service” with 20 years in the business. Neice Bell presented The Kerrville Daily Times Bill Dozier Citizen of the Year award to Phyllis who, according to her son, John Skrumeda, “never expects to get something in return for her good deeds. ... She helps families and children in need because that is one of her passions.”

Sold out event The banquet was as huge success — selling out weeks before the event. With the success of the chamber events for 2018, the chamber will be taking a portion of the funds to create a chamber scholarship. The scholarships will go to five different vocational or tech schools in Kerr County beginning in 2019. “Those fields definitely need young people and this will open up the opportunity for them,” Rachel said.
