A word from the board New year, same HOA committment to residents Hello! I’m Randy Spear, your outgoing representative to the Home Owner Association Board of Comanche Trace. I have served the last four years. First, I want to assure you that the HOA is financially very sound. We have operating and capital reserves meeting or exceeding financial guidelines set out by our auditor and maintain about $300,000 in cash reserves. The board has approved the budget for 2018, which continues or renews the operating agreements between the HOA and the Comanche Trace Club. This covers all operations of the HOA. Our budget provides for funding the HOA operating expenses and keeps to the capital reserve funding consistent with the reserve study recommendations. The second phase of a financial review is the use of our funds. Over the last four years, we have spent about $150,000 for new HOA capital additions. These include: • new flag poles and lights, • new front entrance street lights, • front entrance tree lighting, • engineering study of the front irrigation system, • implementation of Phase 1 of the study — replace the 6 inch line, and • other smaller landscaping and beautification projects. It is my pleasure to inform you that at the board meeting on Dec. 5, the membership elected Mike Sigerman as its new representative to the board. Mike will serve a two-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2018. Mike said at the annual meeting, he wanted to continue the good communication between the property owners and the board, as well as work with Trevor, board president, on upcoming HOA projects. In the future, the board wants to continue to improve the service to our members and the overall appearance of our community, supporting the lifestyle the HOA members have come to enjoy at Comanche Trace. It has been an honor to represent you on the board. Randy Spear

Working from the ground up

Builders continue to stay busy in new year

By Trevor Hyde 2017 was another remarkable year for Comanche Trace. We have experienced tremendous growth over the past four to five years and are poised for another exceptional year in 2018. The average number of home starts per year is approximately 25, and we expect 40 to 50 starts in 2018. Our newest phase, Comanche Hills (Phase 13), will

drive some of that growth, as well as our 2018 Tour of Homes, scheduled for Sept. 28-30 and Oct. 5-7 this year. We are pleased to see continued growth and diversification with homes featuring a variety of architectural styles, square footages and price points. We look forward to seeing even greater growth in the future.

No pain, all gain Retrain your brain to new patterns with fitness class Looking for a spring in your step, more flexibility or better posture? Feeling sluggish? Do you feel stiff when your feet hit the floor in the morning? If the answer is “yes to any of the above, listen up: help is closer and much easier than you think. Recognized throughout the world, movement classes based on the Feldenkrais method have become increasingly popular to people in all walks of life. Sitting at computers, driving and maintaining busy schedules all promote skeletal and muscular habits, which limit movement patterns and become increasingly detrimental to overall well-being and function over time. Feldenkrais movement classes are uniquely designed to reverse the effects of those habits. Participants experience a vast number of life-enhancing benefits, which often become evident during or immediately following a class. While lying on comfortable mats, participants are guided through a series of gentle, non-aerobic and non-impact movements. The movement sequences are easy and bring increased awareness and involvement of the whole self, emphasizing skeletal function. Most importantly, the process retrains the brain, creating new neural pathways to re-establish dormant movement patterns. Typically, the average adult only uses about 30 percent of the movement patterns they used as a child. Movement classes based on

this method are designed to help people discover new movement patterns or rediscover former movement patterns. The method is not “new age.” After many years of suffering following a knee injury in 1929, Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais — a physicist, mechanical engineer and martial arts expert — used his knowledge to avoid surgery and taught himself to walk again without pain. From there, he designed and developed the method and began sharing it around the world. The method’s unique approach to fitness through slow, small, intentional movements put it in a lane of its own. The method emphasizes that less is more and that reducing effort instead of increasing it produces more benefits. At first glance, it might be hard to imagine that this approach can bring such dramatic and potent benefits. In many cases, it only takes one class to believe that Dr. Feldenkrais was on to something. The best news of all is that all fitness levels can benefit from the method. If you think you’re not very fit and aren’t a gym person, think again because you can do this. If you are an accomplished Right: Donna Wilems teaches her Feldenkrais method class at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays in the ladies locker room. Getting a grip Figuring out when to replace an important piece of equipment It is the time of year when players start to look at their equipment for the upcoming year. We clean out our golf bags to see the state of our clubs, balls, towels and, most importantly, our grips.

when changing your grips, and it is important to select the right grip for yourself.

Recently, I was asked, “How often should players change their grips?”

• fit your grips to your particular hand size,

Depending on how much I play, I like to change my golf grips once or twice every year, usually in the off season.

• achieve the desired feel for your playing preference and climate conditions,

Grips are important, and ensuring your equipment is in top-notch shape will go a long way to improve your overall game. How do you determine if your grips need changing? Some of the tell-tale signs of wear are smooth, hard surfaces; cracks; shiny patches; wear spots, especially where the thumbs make contact; faded or bare spots on grips that have been painted or have logos; and insufficient tack. There are many factors to consider

Golf season is quickly approaching and it is time to prepare to:

• replace your favorite grips that have become worn, • or upgrade to a more premium and longer lasting grip. There are three things to keep in mind when choosing a grip: material, diameter and style. For more information, please do not hesitate to visit with our professional staff at Comanche Trace. Until then hit them straight and not too often!

Words on wealth

Keeping stock performance in perspective

The stock market has enjoyed an extended period of strong performance that dates back to the end of the last bear market in early 2009. While stock market performance can be measured in a myriad of ways, it’s the Dow Jones Industrial Average that has surpassed several 1,000-point milestones in 2017. The Dow first topped the 20,000 mark on Jan. 25, before passing the 21,000 level just over a month later. Then, in early August, it broke through the 22,000 mark. As August ended, the seemingly smooth sailing market rally hit a few bumps. While no one can predict the future, market strategists and analysts are suggesting that we could see some additional market volatility in the months ahead. So how do investors keep all of this in perspective while trying to manage their portfolios? Below are three points to keep in mind as you follow the stock market.

20

January-March 2018

1. The real value of each underlying move in the Dow index diminishes as the market rises. While the Dow Jones average is often used to provide a general reading on the state of the market, the index includes the 30 largest company stocks. When the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbs higher, the actual impact of each change in its price is reduced. For example, when the Dow broke through the 2,000 barrier in Jan. 1987, it marked a notable 100 percent increase from the 1,000 level first reached nearly 15 years earlier. By contrast, when the Dow moved 1,000 points to reach 22,000 between March and August of this year, it represented just a 4.5 percent increase. The same perspective applies to day-to-day market moves. The stock market makes headlines when the Dow Jones average moves up or down 100 points in a day. Twenty years ago, when the Dow stood at about

8,000, a 100-point move in the market represented a 1.25 percent change in value. Today, a 100-point move is equivalent to less than a half-percent change. In short, 100 points in the Dow Jones Industrial Average doesn’t mean what it used to. 2. Markets can retreat from record levels. Just as stock markets can rise, history shows they can fall, as well. In the spring of 1999, the index reached the 11,000 mark. It moved higher for a few more months before a severe bear market occurred. The Dow dropped to 7,286 in 2002 before returning to the 11,000 level in 2006. Similarly, the market topped 14,000 in 2007 just before the start of another severe bear market. It fell and did not reach that level again until early 2013.

Stock market swings can act as a reminder to review your financial position, making sure that your asset mix matches your long-term goals. Remember that the most important factors of your investment success are your goals, the time you have to invest, your risk tolerance and your commitment to save. Reacting to the stock market or speculation about events that may happen in the future might make for interesting dinner conversation, but remember that it’s not a proven investing strategy. If you’d like help aligning your financial plan with your feelings on the stock market, consider working with a financial advisor you trust. A financial professional can provide an objective perspective and help you stay focused on your financial goals.

No one can guarantee what will happen to stocks over the next week, month or year. Stock markets are unpredictable in the short-term, as fluctuations are part of the market’s behavior over time. Price swings are a reality for stock investors, but, over time, stocks historically have recovered.

Meet the columnist Jeff Talarico is a financial advisor with Ameriprise Financial and has been in practice for 10 years. He specializes in fee-based financial planning and asset management strategies. To contact him, visit ameripriseadvisors.com/jeff.talarico.

3. Indexes may not be representative of your portfolio. While indexes often generate headlines, their performance may not be an appropriate reflection of your own portfolio. Emotions run high when there are market swings, but don’t let fear get the best of you.
