Welcome to Kerr County! Fall and winter are great seasons to retreat, relax and recreate in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. You’re visiting a special part of Texas, an area that many visitors would love to call home. The scenic beauty of the Hill Country, the tranquility of the Guadalupe River, cultural amenities, historical significance, excellent climate, phenomenal parks, recreational area hotels and recreational vehicle facilities, plus many Texas-friendly citizens are components that make Kerrville an exceptional destination for a family vacation, weekend getaway or home base for the winter months, as well as regional meetings or a convention destination. Kerrville is home to many excellent museums, art galleries and entertainment venues and a 75-member symphony orchestra. Numerous fall and winter festivals, as well as special events, are hosted here on an annual basis. Unique dining and shopping opportunities are plentiful. You also may want to attend your favorite civic club during your visit. Golf and tennis are as popular in the fall and winter months as they are in the spring and summer. Golfers can enjoy three challenging golf courses, while tennis players can play on one of several excellent tennis courts. D-BAT Kerrville Sports Complex, which opened in January 2018, provides a 105-acre state-of-the-art sports complex, complete with 11 baseball and softball fields, as well as 20 acres of soccer fields. The complex also has indoor batting cages, pitching tunnels, simulators, a T-ball facility, coaching rooms and a pro shop,

which is open to the public and an excellent way to get a workout in a controlled environment. The Guadalupe River runs through Kerrville, providing opportunities for fall and winter kayaking and canoeing excursions. If you’re into bicycling, then you’re in luck as the 4.2-mile Kerrville River Trail is the perfect venue for walking, jogging and cycling. You can quickly see there are plenty of reasons to stay a few days or the entire fall and winter seasons. While you are here, take advantage of hub and spoke itineraries that explore the beauty of the Hill Country. Easy one-day journeys include visits to interesting communities, such as Ingram, Hunt, Mountain Home, Junction, Comfort, Luckenbach, Bandera and Fredericksburg. In fact, there’s so much to see and do in the Texas Hill Country, you won’t be able to see everything in just one visit. For that reason, we encourage you to return to the Hill Country often. Kerrville and the Texas Hill Country are great destinations any time of the year. If you have questions or need additional information, call 800-221-7958 or visit kerrvilletexascvb.com. Day Tripper What to see when staying for the weekend For area visitors who want to soak up as much of Kerrville as they can in a couple of days, the relatively tame Guadalupe River is a natural spot to start. But it’s not for nothing that the region is called Hill Country, and it takes only a short while to venture to higher ground, where wilder fare can be found — such as a giraffe that will eat a cookie right out of your hand.

$2 million worth of original art; four prayer plaques with words and prayers at the base of the cross; the Prayer Path and God’s Rock Garden include scriptures along a trail that surrounds the cross-shaped garden and limestone prayer rocks inscribed by visitors.

foxes around the property. Horseback riding & wildlife tour Another 12 miles west of Mo-Ranch is Y.O. Headquarters, 1736 Y.O. Ranch Road NW in Mountain Home, which is home to bigger wildlife, including giraffes. At least 24-hour advance notice is required to arrange for a tour that could include the giraffes, aoudads, axis deer, buffalo, blackbucks or other exotic species. For ordinary horse rides, a few-days notice is needed. The steeds are allowed to roam the roughly 5,400-acre property when they’re not giving rides, so it takes a while to round them up. The giraffes at Y.O. Headquarters will come up and eat out of your hand, according to hunting director Kevin Abell. The two female giraffes are pregnant, with one due sometime in February 2019 and the other in June or July, Abell said. Mo-Ranch day pass Visitors looking for fun on the water can make the drive west up to the north fork of the Guadalupe at Presbyterian Mo-Ranch Assembly, 2229 FM 1340 in Hunt, where they can purchase a day pass, which gets them access to the camp’s waterfront area. The ranch is named after Daniel Moran, who was chairman of Continental Oil and Transportation Co. and the previous owner of the ranch. A Mo-Ranch day pass gets guests access to the camp’s canoes. A river rope swing allows would-be Tarzans and Janes to dangle out across the water and let themselves plop into the Guadalupe. Fishing is limited to the catch-and-release kind. An outdoor pool also is available, along with a playground area, a disc golf course, tennis courts and outdoor table tennis. Mo-Ranch day pass holders who want to commune a bit with nature can walk along five miles of marked hiking trails on the 500-acre property. The place includes a wildflower garden, which offers a chance to see monarchs and other butterflies. Allison Bueche, the communications director for the ranch, said she often spots little

butterflies and other pollinators. The gardens are planted with a selection of milkweed and blooming plants that offer nectar. The other two gardens are found at Kerrville-Schreiner Park and on the grounds of the Kerr County Courthouse, 700 Main St. The courthouse garden is at the southeast entrance of the building. It’s maintained by the Texas Master Naturalists, Hill Country Chapter. Of all the butterfly species, it’s the monarch that reigns, especially in Texas. A state statute designates the first seven days of October as Butterfly Week to “encourage Texas residents and visitors to study, observe and promote the life of the state insect: monarch butterfly.” The annual migration of monarchs from the north through Texas down to Mexico will put them in the Kerrville area starting in midto-late September probably through the end of October, according to Becky Etzler, the nature center’s director. She said the massive roosts of monarchs numbering in the hundreds and thousands that are sometimes documented elsewhere don’t typically appear locally, but the center’s garden is a good place to see a few at a time. This year’s rainy mid-September should mean a lot of blooming plants come October, Etzler said, which could make for a higher-thannormal transient monarch population in the Kerrville area. Even after the monarchs are gone, plenty of butterflies and birds hang around pretty much throughout the year. The center offers a checklist of butterfly and bird species that visitors can use to count the critters they see and to gauge the chance they’ll see a particular kind. The list says, for example, that the Gulf fritillary butterfly is common at the garden. The black-chinned hummingbird is common in the fall, but is rare at other times of the year.

Winter Texan’s Bucket List Things to do while calling Kerr County a temporary home Long-term visitors in the Kerrville area — who might be staying at a vacation rental or one of a couple dozen RV parks — have access to just about all the activities enjoyed by permanent residents. For people wanting to park their homes for an extended stay, they don’t need to look far. Kerrville offers a wide variety of RV parks, some with a scenic view of the Guadalupe River.

Horseback riding and antiquing can be found in Bandera, which also is about 30 minutes away. Hill Country vineyards also are within a half-hour drive from Kerrville. From Bending Branch Winery in Comfort to Fiesta Winery in Fredericksburg, with so much in between, wine connoisseurs and newbies alike will have a fun time, tasting wine and buying a bottle or two. And, to keep from drinking and driving, pick from many of the winery bus tours, which are based out of Fredericksburg. In Medina, there is Love Creek Orchards, which is known as the apple capital of Texas. Nearby is The Apple Store, which produces more than 50 different products made from sweet Texas apples — from jellies and butters to baked goods. The Twisted Sisters motorcycle ride also goes through Medina and nearby areas. The 100-mile loop, which covers Texas highways 335, 338 and 337, is one of the most challenging roads in Texas, because it follows canyons, steep hills and jagged cliffs. The Camp Verde General Store also offers a wide selection of baked goods and shopping. Take a class Club Ed is the Dietert Center’s, 451 Guadalupe St., community education program, which includes way more than canine-themed classes in its broad curriculum. For example, Club Ed students who want to carry a concealed handgun can qualify for a license by taking the new Texas Department of Public Safety license course offered through the center. A separate course is designed to help you choose what handgun to buy. A Club Ed driver safety course is designed specifically for drivers age 50 and older. The motorcycle basic rider course teaches students

how to operate a motorcycle, the best protective clothing to wear, how to avoid dangerous situations and how to get out of them. A helmet and motorcycle are provided. Other courses range from estate planning to drone piloting and playing guitar. Even people who want to learn how to use Microsoft’s Excel spreadsheet software can find a course at the Dietert Center. Many of the classes require pre-registration and the schedule changes quarterly. Members of the center pay a discounted rate for some classes, and long-term Kerrville visitors pay the same rate as permanent residents. Join the gym Offering a special three-month membership rate for long-term “Winter Texans” in Kerrville is The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center, 201 Holdsworth Drive. People also can pay for using the center as they go. The Kroc Center offers a full fitness studio with cardio machines and weights, as well as an outdoor heated lap pool and 60 different exercise classes. Among the exercise classes are yoga, spinning, resistance bands and several classes designed for seniors to help them work on stretching and balance. A Kroc Center boot camp class is pretty intense, maybe not the right level for most seniors, the center’s Molly Putnam said. But at the center’s open gym, a regular group of seniors play pickleball, she said, and it’s very competitive. Pickleball is a hybrid of badminton, tennis and table tennis whose players hit a sort of whiffle ball over a net. Pickleball tends to be played in the gym more in the morning and basketball toward evening, according to Putnam.

Attractions Sports complex on page 22 The arts on page 24

Batter up at the sports complex The D-BAT Kerrville Sports Complex, 111 Home Run Drive, offers a plethora of services to people staying in Kerrville. The sports complex includes 11 softball/baseball fields, 20 acres of irrigated soccer fields, restrooms, concession stands, a maintenance building and an indoor practice facility. The latter includes a pro shop, turfed practice field, batting cages and lanes, meeting space and a concessions area. Local youth organizations — including Kerrville Little League, Hill Country Youth Soccer Association, Hill Country Crush Soccer Academy and the Senior Softball League — have used the facility this past spring. So yes, Kerrville sports enthusiasts have so far been thrilled with all the opportunities the sports complex offers. But also it’s attracting plenty of visitors into Kerrville. D-BAT, a major partner with the complex, has organized baseball tournaments at the complex, bringing visitors across Texas into Kerrville and boosting the local economy in the process. “We got a lot of tournament teams that come in from out of town that are playing in some of these weekend tournaments,” said Shane Heffernan, the sports complex manager. “Also with D-BAT, they are hosting a lot of tournaments. They got a lot of people coming in

from out of town. Those organization were looking to be brought into town anyway, they just needed the right venue to do it.” And when visitors arrive for the tournaments, they will be greeted with some of the finer fields in Texas. The baseball experts who have toured the complex are all in agreement: The fields at the sports complex are state of the art. “They are all pretty amazed,” Shane said last March. “I would say there is nothing like this, until you get to the upper echelon fields in Dallas. They (D-BAT fields) are really, really nice. They are really well-manicured. They are really playable. Everyone who has seen them has raved about them.” Visitors also have field rental options and can pay for batting lessons. An hour rental of the batting cage costs $35 for non-members, an hour on the turf field costs $40 and hour-long lessons cost $70. Since opening in January 2018, the complex has been met with acclaim from Kerrville residents and visitors alike. “It’s a fantastic thing for the community,” Shane said. “From the tournaments that we’ve had so far, everyone has loved it; they like the atmosphere. They like the Hill Country; it’s really laid back, the fields are really nice, the locations are nice, it’s easy to find a place to eat, it’s easy to find a hotel room, it’s a centrally-located facility.”

Recreation Department, 2385 Bandera Highway, or emailed to josh.rodrigue@kerrvilletx.gov. What to expect: “The Holiday Lighted Parade and the Courthouse Lighting Ceremony are staples in the Kerrville and Kerr County community,” said Josh Rodrigue, parks and recreation specialist.“The Holiday Lighted Parade, sponsored by our Parks and Recreation Department, is running on its 18th year. Over 1,000 people packed downtown on Water and Earl Garrett streets to see the 92 floats and marching groups light up the streets (last year). The Courthouse Lighting Ceremony that accompanies it certainly tops off the festive night. It is an excellent night of holiday cheer and a great chance for Kerrville citizens and families to step into the holiday season together. That’s definitely my favorite part about the evening and the Holiday Lighted Parade.” Contact: 830-258-1151 NEW: Lighting of Tranquility Island When: Thanksgiving through New Year’s Details: The city plans to light parts of Tranquility Island this holiday season. Christmas Walk When: 5:30-7:50 p.m. Tuesday Where: starts at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 909 Main St., and finishes at First Presbyterian Church, 800 Jefferson St. Details: Five downtown churches — First Baptist, First Presbyterian, First Assembly of God, St. Peter Episcopal and Notre Dame Catholic churches — will each have a 20-minute Christmas-themed service retelling the Christmas story in five parts. Each will feature music and teach themes, including Old Testament prophesies, Mary, Joseph, shepherds and wise men, as well as look toward the second coming and advent of Jesus Christ through the Kerrville Ministerial Alliance Christmas Walk. It is suggested to bring a flashlight, park in the Cailloux Theater parking lot and follow the assembling crowd along the luminary-lit sidewalk. After the final service, there will be fellowship and light refreshments at First Presbyterian. The past several years had more than 500 attendees. There will be an offering

collected at each location with the funds benefiting Christian Assistance Ministry, St. Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army to support the hands-on work they do year-round, ministering to people in need in the community. What to expect: “This special community-uniting event has been compared to both a pub crawl — but with churches — and a progressive dinner, revealing the Christmas story church by church,” said event coordinator Kristin Mudry. “The Christmas Walk Services are a unique experience of the retelling of the Christmas story in a progressive walk from church to church, and with each church featuring an invited guest minister,” said David Danielson, former Kerrville Ministerial Alliance president.“I’m not sure there is any other place in the world where this happens. There are other Christmas walk events, but only in Kerrville do participants go to such a diversity of faith traditions — Baptist, Presbyterian, Assembly of God, Episcopal and Catholic — on the same night. The Christmas Walk Services are a beautiful expression of the unity in diversity of our local community of faith, and the perfect way to start another Advent season.” Contact: 830-285-8382 or kerrvillewelcomewagon@yahoo.com

Night in Bethlehem When: 6-8 p.m. Friday Where: Trinity Baptist Church, 800 Jackson Road Details: The annual Night in Bethlehem is a free indoor walk-through nativity with live sheep that’s open to the community. Attendees should enter through the Bluebell Street entrance of the worship center foyer, where a costumed guide will take them through the story of Jesus’ birth. The tour lasts between 15 and 20 minutes with groups sent through every three minutes approximately, so attendees can come and go as they please. There will be a reception with refreshments after the tour in the family life center. What to expect: “I loved starting our Christmas season off right with our focus being on Jesus,” said an attendee from last year. “I think that walking through the Christmas story does help us focus and remember why we celebrate Christmas,” said Kellee Parish, event coordinator and minister of children at Trinity Baptist Church. “Experiencing the sights, sounds and scenery around the nativity helps us understand it in a different way. It’s not just reading or hearing, it’s walking through the story of Jesus’ birth. It’s fun to watch children as they walk through the first time; many want to go through it again and again. It’s a real blessing to get to share the gift of Night in Bethlehem with our Kerrville community.” Contact: 830-895-0100 or tbck.org

Annual stock show & cowboy breakfast It’s real Texas fun, kicks off in the wee dark hours of the morning on Jan. 11, and hundreds of locals and visitors will show up to enjoy downhome fun. The 15th annual Cowboy Breakfast will be at 6:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the Hill Country Youth Event Center, 3785 Highway 27. It’s intentionally a bit hokey, with events including the “Almost Famous” goat milking contest, where local officials line up to win the coveted honor, and the Cow Chip Toss, where local businesses vie to make the longest toss, but it has significance, as well, by being the forerunner to the Hill Country District Jr. Livestock Show. Local 4-H and FFA participants, exhibitors in the livestock show, will serve up a free breakfast of hot sausage rolls, juice and gallons of steaming hot coffee as local on-site radio stations and a chuck wagon cook add to the wholesome atmosphere. The breakfast event, produced by the Kerrville

Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, and sponsored by community supporters, including Peterson Health, offers “a great opportunity for residents and visitors to join the festivities, as we kick off the 75th annual District Jr. Livestock Show; the fifth largest Jr. livestock show in Texas,” said KCVB president/CEO Charlie McIlvain. Show dates are Jan. 13–19 and all events are at the Hill Country Youth Event Center. Many second and third generation attendees will be among approximately 1,300 youngsters who enter their livestock in the show. All must reside in Kerr or 33 surrounding counties, and all must be either FFA or 4-H members. Steve Bauer, president of the Hill Country District Jr. Livestock Show, has been active with the association for 18 years. Running this large of an event takes considerable time and energy, he said. “This is the only strictly volunteer-operated Jr. livestock show. We have about 125 volunteers and

an executive board of 15 that handle everything,” he said. The common belief is that “if you invest in students, they will excel. They learn animal husbandry, enjoy great camaraderie with show participants and make contacts that will stay with them throughout their life,” he said. The group also awards thousands of dollars in scholarships to high school, collegiate and ag mechanics who are selected from applicants based on grades, residence and participation in 4-H or FFA. The livestock show is open to the public. If you go, expect to be impressed by these hardworking youngsters whose prized animals will compete in categories of market steers, lambs, swine and meat goats; commercial and registered Angora goats; registered heifers, breeding sheep and swine; and non-pedigreed breeding swine. A relatively new category is ag mechanics, where students are judged on agricultural products, tractor restoration, woodworking and metal work. The big finale is the livestock auction, which ends the show at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 20. Summing up the importance of the HCDJLS, Steve fondly recalls a frequent comment of the late former Kerr County judge Pat Tinley. “I will always be an avid supporter of the junior livestock show. I just don’t see these kids come into my courtroom,” he said. For more information, visit hcdjls.org.

Over 100 Years of Tradition ~ The Perfect Venue for Your Next Event Our elegant three-story mansion was built by Gustave Fritz and Huldah Schreiner in the early 1900s. The mansion was the center of social activities in Kerrville and the surrounding area that is known as the Texas Hill Country. Today the mansion’s grand warmth recalls the splendor of those days while offering an event center with formal, nostalgic and classic options.

Many celebrations have taken place here over the past 112 years that it seems these walls were meant for the warm, delightful feeling of family and friends celebrating life, love, and all good things. Many families return generation after generation to enjoy the important history this estate plays in their heritage and in their new family’s lives.
