Tralee, the county capital is known worldwide as the home of the International Rose of Tralee Festival. Arrive in style The perfect way to arrive in North Kerry is through Tarbert. It sets the scene perfectly. The Killimer to Tarbert ferry is a fun activity in itself and offers the opportunity to see some dolphins on route.

Tarbert is home to the Bridewell, built in 1831 and for more than 100 years it served as a Courthouse and Jail. Its historically informative Exhibition depicts rough justice in 19th Century Ireland. You can stop for a coffee in the Ferry House, a 200-year-old

building that was once the Leslie Arms.

Head towards Listowel and experience Moyvane’s Nature Trail and Village Walk.

This takes pride of place in the village and has won the Kerry Open Gate Award.

North Kerry hosts festivals for all ages In North Kerry, there is a wide range of remarkable literature, poetry, music, art and theatre just waiting to be discovered. It is no wonder that the towns and villages here are home to a dazzling array of visitor attractions, festivals and vibrant performances.

The Rose of Tralee is Ireland’s largest international festival and Listowel Writers Week with its seminars and workshops brings together Nobel laureates and first time writers from Ireland and overseas.

North Kerry is also an ideal location for children. There is no shortage of activities for younger members of the family. The area boasts some of the most engaging and entertaining events and attractions in Ireland.

Included in these are annual festivals such as the Tír na nÓg Easter Festival, Tralee Circus Festival and Ballyheigue Summer Festival (a beach festival filled with fun and games).

For young music lovers the Ballybunion’s Atlantic Sessions in July is one festival that should not be missed. Meanwhile a sing along and dance can always be enjoyed first hand at some of the local Festivals, such as the Dan Paddy Andy Festival in Lyreacrompane, Sean McCarthy Festival

in Finuge, Con Curtin Festival in Brosna or Padraic O’Keeffe Festival in Sliabh Luachra.

Visitors can also join in a local sing song with traditional performers rambling house style at O’Sullivan’s Thatch Bar in Lisselton, or Teach Síamsa in Finuge.

There is an abundance of adventures to be enjoyed It really doesn’t matter if it is raining or sunny outside, there will always be a broad variety of all weather attractions for the younger visitor to enjoy. For starters they can explore Crag Cave near Castleisland or go riding in the indoor rapids at the Aquadome in Tralee.

Ballybunion also offers an opportunity for rest and relaxation at the Seaweed Baths.

Something to see and do There is always something going on in North Kerry. This is especially true in Ballybunion. It is a family-friendly destination and offers cliff top walks, cycling, surfing, horse riding, dolphin and whale watching, seaweed baths, amusement arcades and a variety of pubs and cafes.

Ballybunion’s all-weather leisure centre has heated swimming pools for adults, children and toddlers, air conditioned gym and fitness room, steam room, and Jacuzzi and is open year round. Parents can leave their children in safe hands at one of several summer camps or at the cookery school for children at Checkers’ Café.

A trip on Listowel’s Lartigue Monorail is also a must for any visitor.

Alternatively kids can enjoy some history and heritage and experience life in Medieval Geraldine Tralee at the Kerry County Museum, or discover times past at Blennerville Windmill Museum. Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre is another great option.

Here, with its safari-style boat ride, a wealth of natural heritage of the Tralee Bay ecosystem is just waiting to be discovered.

North Kerry is the birthplace of some of the most famous of Irish writers, John B. Keane, Brendan Kennelly, Brian MacMahon,

Brendan Kennelly, Maurice Walsh and George Fitzmaurice. Locals and literary fans young and old acknowledge and celebrate this at annual literary workshops at Seanchaí, Kerry’s Literary Centre in Listowel and festivals such as the Listowel Writer’s Week held each June and the Brendan Kennelly Summer Festival held each August in Ballylongford.

Music and theatre lovers are also spoiled for choice. Why not unwind at an evening at Siamsa Tíre in Tralee? - the proud base of Ireland’s National Folk Theatre (but be sure to book in advance). Alternatively you could attend one of the varied musical and theatrical performances of Local, National and International distinction, staged at smaller venues like the Abbeydorney Drama Society Theatre and St. John’s Theatre in Listowel or in the new, worldclass Tinteán Theatre in Ballybunion.

A history of fine dining Due to its rich pastures, North Kerry has had a long standing tradition of being a supplier of foods, not only to neighbouring counties, but also to the rest of the world.

The Listowel Food Fair in November is a celebration of Kerry’s rich history in food production. With seminars, workshops and delectable recipes on offer – the festival is a testament to the gourmet range available. For those interested in seafood, the Ballylongford Oyster Festival offers a broad range of activities and events at the beginning of the Oyster season.

Carrigafoyle Castle, a listed National Monument is located on Carrigafoyle Island. Built between 1490 and 1500, it features a spiral staircase of 104 steps that visitors can climb to this very day. Standing 30m high it has stunning views from its battlements.

Ardfert parish takes in the villages of Ardfert and Kilmoyley. Ardfert village sprung up around the ancient church of St. Brendan, Ardfert Cathedral.

Founded in the 6th Century, it is now a National Monument and hosts an Interpretive Centre. Ardfert Friary is also a National Monument founded circa 1253. This little village was once the “Capital” of the County!

Little Samphire Island Lighthouse has been a key landmark of Fenit for many years. This 18th century Lighthouse is open for the general public to explore and discover its unique character.

HE lively market town of Listowel is situated in the heart of North Kerry on the banks of the River Feale, one of the most outstanding salmon and sea trout rivers of Ireland. It is a famous literary centre – no town in Ireland has produced such a wealth of prodigious writers including playwright John B Keane and novelist and poet Bryan MacMahon.

These and others came together in 1971 to found Listowel Writers Week, a literary festival of international standing which takes place at the end of May each year.

Listowel is designated a National Heritage Town such is the richness of its buildings and ornamental plasterwork, like the Maid of Erin by Patrick McAuliffe, and the manner in which they are maintained by the townspeople.

The town’s history dates back to 1303 and Listowel Castle, the fortress of the Fitzmaurice family, still stands boldly on the west side of the town square. You can enjoy some magnificent views of the North Kerry countryside, the town and its famous racecourse from the Castle battlements.

Tradition and heritage Adjoining the Castle is the Seanchaí Literary Centre, located in a Georgian town house, which presents the works of the great Kerry writers in a unique audio-visual experience, while opposite lies St Johns’ Theatre and Visual Arts Centre which hosts local, national and international theatrical, musical and visual arts events right through the year.

The Listowel Lartigue Monorail and Museum offers visitors of all ages the opportunity to experience and learn about a truly unique form of rail travel.

Listowel’s Farmers’ Market, held each Friday, is one of the longest running traditional markets in Ireland. Listowel prides itself on good quality, locally grown, caught or produced foods, focusing on local smallholders. Variety is the spice of life and Listowel’s Farmers’ Market has it in abundance with produce ranging from organic vegetables, free range pork and chicken, free range eggs, fresh fish, cheeses, organic soups, and livestock to home-baked breads, cakes, quiches and much more to whet the appetite!

DID YOU KNOW? • The name Listowel comes from the Irish Lios Tuathail, meaning Tuathail’s ringfort.

• The September festival at Listowel Race Course is the joint longest racing festival in Ireland at seven days long, the same duration as the Galway races. The first meeting in Listowel took place in 1859.

• Pat McAuliffe’s The Maid of Erin plasterwork was at the centre of a controversy in 1999 when it was decided to ‘cover her dignity’ and a dress was painted on her famous bosom. A debate ensued and the plasterwork was eventually returned to her original semi-nude state.

Dating back to 1303, the original towers of Listowel Castle still stand and guided tours are available from May until August.

With its location on the River Feale, Listowel is known for its salmon and trout fishing. Major works have been carried out on the river to provide additional salmon pools.

Listowel hosts an interesting Heritage Trail which features all the historical and scenic points of interest, travelling from the centre of Listowel, along the banks of the River Feale to Listowel Golf Club.

This visitor attraction presents the works of five of Kerry’s most esteemed writers – John B Keane, Bryan MacMahon, George Fitzmaurice, Brendan Kennelly and Maurice Walsh.

This unique museum gives you the opportunity to experience a demonstration journey on board a full-scale, diesel-powered replica of the monorail which ran from Listowel to Ballybunion between 1888 and 1924.

This is a premier venue for the promotion of a monthly programme of Visual and Performing Arts featuring the best local, national and international product in Theatre, Music, Dance and Exhibitions.

RALEE combines a mixture of excellent shopping and unbeatable accommodation choices with a championship golf course and indoor waterworld, an allweather sports centre and public park within 150 metres of the town centre. To combat the issue of unpredictable Irish weather, Tralee offers a superb range of all-weather visitor attractions. Take for example Siamsa Tíre - the National Folk Theatre of Ireland, Blennerville Windmill and Museum, or the awardwinning Kerry County Museum. Keep the children entertained indoors at the Aqua Dome Waterworld, Toby World for Children, Predator Paint Ball with its war game adventures, or at Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre - an activity and nature park which focuses on the internationally renowned Tralee Bay Nature Reserve.

TRALEE, the capital town of County Kerry may be almost 800 years old, but it is more than up to date in terms of its facilities

Within a 15-minute drive of Tralee is the ecclesiastical centre of Ardfert and the port village of Fenit. Here you can take a boat trip around the harbour or take a tour of Fenit Lighthouse and heritage park. Tralee is the starting point of the Kerry Camino, a spectacular walking trail following in the footsteps of St Brendan the Navigator which travels along the old Dingle Way from St John’s RC Church in Tralee to St James’s Church in Dingle.

Tralee is a very attractive place that is embracing green and eco tourism. Take time out to enjoy the riverside or canal bank walks, the Garden of the Senses and the Rose Gardens in full bloom at Tralee Town Park, follow a Nature Trail at Gortbrack Organic Farm in Ballyseedy, walk the old coach road in Ballyseedy Wood or discover ancient woodland, wild goats and beautiful vistas at Glenageenty. Take the Canal walk to Blennerville and while there explore what the Guinness Book of Records describes as the “largest working windmill” in Ireland.

Tralee has gained worldwide fame for its annual International Rose of Tralee Festival, where each August girls of Irish descent from the five continents compete for the coveted title of the Rose of Tralee. The four-day event remains one of the biggest free shows in Ireland with an event-filled programme for all ages culminating with the selection of the Rose on Tuesday night.

Subterranean magic!

One of Kerry’s top attractions, Crag Cave is a natural limestone showcave discovered in 1983 and is thought to be over one million years old.

A wonderland of stalagmites and stalactites,

this stunning cave is situated just 2km from Castleisland. The ancient limestone cave and its abundant formations are well worth a visit and can be seen as part of a guided tour.

It is also home to a large indoor soft play adventure centre, Crazy Cave, which caters for children up to 12 years, as well as an outdoor playground and mega climbing wall.

New to Crag Caves this summer is Kingdom Falconry, which offers the entire family a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with a variety of majestic birds of prey – hawks, falcons and owls – combining education and entertainment.

Heart of heritage Scartaglen is a small rural village full of culture and traditions. It nestles on a small hill half way between Castleisland and Ballydesmond and lies within the famous Sliabh Luachra region of Kerry.

In 2002 The Sliabh Luachra Archive & Traditional Music Centre was opened to promote and preserve the music, song, dance and unique traditions of Sliabh Luachra. The centre also hosts regular drama and music performances, rambling house nights and a variety of classes designed to preserve and teach the rich tradition of music, song, dance and storytelling that the area is renowned for.

Sheer paradise Lyreacrompane is a little village that lies close to the towns of Listowel, Castleisland, Abbeyfeale, and Tralee. The natural and rugged landscape of the area is the ideal location for nature lovers. It was also the spot where John B Keane spent most of his summers when he was young, which prompted him to write “I fell immediately in love with this strange and wonderful countryside, with the character, colour and language of its people and with its numerous dancing streams. The unbounded freedom of hills and glens amount to sheer paradise”.

Make the most of the beautiful setting and enjoy one of the great walks in the region such as the Castleisland River Walk, the Glenageenty Walk or the Kilcummin Walk.

• Crag cave

Crag Cave is over one million years old and offers a rare opportunity to witness stalactites, stalagmites and other magnificent cave formations.

Festival is held in mid-August where the whole family can enjoy tiny tots races, Glamour’s grannies competition, bonnie baby competition, the Harvest Queen competition, dog show, football tournaments, fancy dress and lots more.

But most noteworthy is the Knocknagoshel Halloween Ghost Trail Festival. The festival attracts close to a thousand visitors from all over Ireland as attendees take a walk down the Well Road, following a spooky trail where they meet ghosts, witches, monsters and lots more frightening sights.

Festival fever Castleisland hosts a number of family-friendly festivals throughout the year. Most notable is the Patrick O’Keeffe Traditional Music Festival, which is held on the October Bank Holiday weekend. The festival celebrates the life and music of legendary Sliabh Luachra fiddle player and teacher, Patrick O’Keeffe (1887 – 1963) who became known as the last of the great fiddle masters.

Visitors come from all over Ireland and beyond to enjoy planned and impromptu pub sessions. The festival also incorporates workshops for fiddle and accordion playing in the Sliabh Luachra style. Poetry lovers are also catered for with an afternoon session of their own and singing afternoons, set dancing and ceilís have all been woven into the fabric of the festival. This year’s festival will run from October 26th to 29th inclusive.

Week of welcomes This year will see the very first East Kerry Roots Festival which will be held from August 21st to 26th during National Heritage Week. It will be a celebration of the unique culture and heritage in the greater Sliabh Luachra area.

Among the events organised are a genealogy workshop, an American wake, song, dance and storytelling

Veteran fiddler Maurice O’Keeffe plays at the sculpture of the famous Patrick O’Keeffe - Don MacMonagle sessions, a bodhrán workshop, a welcome home concert and much more.

Halloween haunted village Knocknagoshel is a vibrant and historical village which featured on a banner carried by local men at a rally addressed

by Charles Stewart Parnell in 1891 stating “Arise Knocknagoshel, and take your place among the nations of the earth!”

The banner is today commemorated with a plaque on the gable end of a house in the centre of Knocknagoshel village.

Knocknagoshel Halloween Ghost Trail Festival

Castleisland Races The Castleisland Racing Festival celebrated its 153rd year in operation this year. Held in mid-June every year, the town comes alive with street entertainment and events like Children’s Fancy Dress, bouncing castles, bale racing, terrier racing and lots more. Famous jockeys Norman Williamson, Paul Thompson, and Paul and Nina Carberry are just a few who began their careers in Castleisland.

Sliabh Luachra Summer School, 24-29th July Located on the borders of counties Cork, Kerry and Limerick, the “Bruach Na Carraige” centre in Rockchapel is a celebration of Irish music and culture as expressed in the authentic style of Sliabh Luachra traditions.

This cosy venue introduces visitors to the unique history and culture of the area.

Throughout July and August a sesuin is held every Tuesday night at 9pm.

The first half features some of the regions most renowned musicians, and the second half is where the audience gets involved and learns how to dance a set or sing a song. The latter half of the show is all about audience participation.

As part of the Day of the Regions, which is a Duhallow wide celebration of everything unique to the region, a series of workshops will be held as part of the Sliabh Luachra Summer School, supported by IRD Duhallow, from the 24th – 29th of July.

The programme includes traditional music, sean nós and set dancing workshops, tour to places of interest around Sliabh Luachra, workhop on the Irish language with Micheal Ó Muircheartaigh and Ceoltoiri Sliabh Luachra present their show ‘A Musical Trail Through the History of Ireland’ at 8pm on Friday July 27th.

Bookings are also currently being taken for The Sliabh Luachra Summer Camp aimed at children aged between 7 and 16 years from Monday 13th to Friday the 24th of August.

Castleisland Golf Club is an 18hole parkland course built on 200 acres with modern sand-based greens and tees. Built to the highest championship standards, this course can be played throughout the year.

• Kingdom Falconry

Kingdom Falconry at Crag Cave gives the opportunity to witness hawks, falcons and owls at close range. See a flying display of various species of birds of prey; take the kids to an ‘owl encounter’ where they will meet the owls or go on a ‘hawk walk’ in the open countryside where hawks are flown free and follow you along.

ruins and still functioning buildings covering the Celtic pre-Christian, early Christian and Medieval eras. From Bronze Age copper mines, burial mounds, ring forts, monastic settlements and castles, to great country houses, Killarney and the surrounding region have an abundance of locations of immense interest.

Ross Castle, which was built in the 15th century by the O’Donoghue Chieftains, is one such example. It has been magnificently restored to its former glory. It overlooks Lough Leane and looks out on a 7th century monastery and 12th century Oratory on Innisfallen Island.

Muckross House and Gardens is one of Ireland’s premier attractions and incorporates Muckross Traditional Farms, craft workshops, nature trails, free audio visual, restaurant and craft shop. Built in 1843, this magnificent Victorian mansion is a focal point within the National Park. The Gardens are renowned worldwide for their beauty and Muckross Traditional Working Farms recreate the traditional farming methods of the 1930s. Visitors to the farms can enjoy the children’s woodland playground.

Muckross Abbey was founded by the Franciscans in the 15th century. Although a “ruin”, the building is in a remarkable state of preservation with the walls of the Cloister (with its famous yew tree) and its associated buildings in their original complete state.

Access is all year round and admission is free.

Other great spots to visit in the National Park include Torc Waterfall, one of Ireland’s finest waterfalls and Ladies View (which may have derived its name because of the delight expressed by Queen Victoria’s ladies-in-waiting on their visit to the spot over 150 years ago).

The Gap of Dunloe – a truly magical experience Jakki Montica, a visitor to Killarney from Toronto, shares her experience of visiting the iconic Gap of Dunloe “It was a misty morning when we set out on our great Gap of Dunloe adventure. Following a steaming creamy Irish Coffee, we began our hike through the stunning glacial valley.

The lazier people amongst the group decided to take a pony and trap instead of hike. On their journey they were regaled with stories and poetry from the local trap driver.

“As we climbed over the apex of the Gap, we marvelled at its natural beauty.

We then descended down into the Black Valley, passing small sheep farms and homesteads along our path.

“From the Black Valley our boat adventure began. We meandered through two rivers and three lakes and the magical wilderness.

Our boatman shared songs and stories with us as we made our way through the rapids at the old Weir Bridge, under Toothache Bridge and on to Muckross Lake and Ross Castle.

Whether it’s the ‘craic’ in a small, country pub or a dynamic stage production in one of Kerry’s music and theatre venues, you will find it here - and everything in between. Festivals all around the county are bustling with a myriad of evening activities for all the family and streets come to life with musicians, magicians, performers and puppeteers to entertain all ages.

Racing at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium, Tralee

Variety is the spice of life The villages and towns of Kerry have an abundance of great restaurants, cafes, pubs and bars on their quaint streets which specialise in fine locally produced food, traditional Irish music - folk ballads and impromptu sing songs. The villages of North and East Kerry in particular, are renowned for their special music sessions and are masters in the art of story telling.

Killarney, the tourist capital, is always in holiday mood and offers a fantastic range of night-time entertainment. Ireland’s National Entertainment Centre [the INEC] is located at the Gleneagle Hotel and hosts some of the best national and international artists. The INEC, an amazing 2000 seater venue has announced the Irish run of the hit stage production Dancing Queen and this July will also welcome the exclusive Irish run of Michael Flatley’s, Lord of the Dance.

The Gleneagle ballroom celebrates 50 years of nightly family entertainment and this summer, welcomes entertainers such as Sharon Shannon, Brendan Shine, Mike Denver and the Dolans. The Liam O’Connor Show in the Town Centre is a high-energy celebration of sound and movement, and captures the essential excitement and variety contained in all aspects of traditional and contemporary Irish music.

For a scary alternative, the Killarney Ghost Bus with tales of heroes, traitors, ghosts and villains is another evening option. There are such a wide variety of pubs, excellent restaurants, cafes and clubs around Killarney that every taste is catered for and a ‘good night’ is always guaranteed.

Performance of “Clann Lír” by Síamsa Tíre, the National Theatre of Ireland, Tralee Tralee has all the facilities of a county capital and no shortage of evening entertainment. It is home to Siamsa Tíre, the National Folk Theatre of Ireland which performs different shows 6 nights a week during the summer season.

Siamsa is one of Ireland’s cultural highlights and attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world each year to its purpose-built auditorium in Tralee for the best of Irish music, song and dance. For many overseas visitors it is the highlight of their visit to Ireland. There is an energy, a wildness, a passion and freshness about these performances, using the best of traditional arts, which come together to create a memorable and emotional experience for visitors. During the winter season, Siamsa hosts concerts, music recitals and plays by the Abbey National Theatre and others.

The Kingdom Greyhound Stadium in Tralee provides another option for an entertaining night of racing. Often regarded as the gourmet capital of Ireland, Kenmare offers a fantastic range of eating experiences at a wonderful selection of high quality restaurants. A lively bustling town in the evenings, music and song can be enjoyed in the many cosy bars.

The Carnegie Arts Centre, which was established in 2008 hosts Films, Concerts, Drama, Visual Arts Exhibitions, Workshops and Comedy. This multi-purpose arts centre has a 140-seat theatre, a full-size cinema screen, a performance area and a gallery space for art exhibitions.

The Ring of Kerry has a number of villages in it environs where spontaneous music sessions can erupt at any hostelry at any time, and good food is served everywhere specialising in local produce from local suppliers. There’s nowhere quite like the Ring of Kerry as it’s all about the atmosphere and the traditional Irish pubs in a special setting. HE valley farmlands of Mid Kerry become a little hilly as you drive through the pretty country villages and townlands of Firies and Ballyhar.

The McGillycuddy Reeks to the south are always looming and set the scene for a leisurely or active visit to this region.

Castlemaine is the birthplace of the famous Australian outlaw ‘The Wild Colonial Boy’ and is today enjoyed by those who like fishing and archery. Milltown is a great crossroads for the county and is a little gem for walks, fishing, the cattle mart and farmers’ markets.

There are some great pubs and B&Bs in the region and some wonderful eclectic cooking!

However, for those who are interested in Ireland’s past, there are many interesting heritage sites close by, such as the Mass Rock.

One of the icons of Mid Kerry is the Gap of Dunloe, hewn two million years ago by giant slow-moving ice. One of the finest examples of a glaciated valley in Western Europe, it is

a narrow pass in the mountains between the Purple Mountain and the Bull Mountain.

This mystical extraordinary glacial valley is unique, haunting and surely a UNESCO site of the future. To journey through it is a must whether by pony and trap, walking, cycling or on horseback. For adrenaline junkies, climbing Corrán Tuathail and the Reeks is the ultimate experience.

From the Gap of Dunloe and Beaufort there is also golf, crazy golf and angling (renowned for its brown trout and salmon fishing). Killorglin also boasts an 18-hole golf course with magnificent views over Cromane Harbour.

Gateway to the Iveragh Peninsula Crossing over the River Laune into Killorglin, which is the gateway to the Ring of Kerry and Iveragh Peninsula, you can enjoy the scenic views of the mountains. The home of Ireland’s oldest festival, Puck Fair, it bustles with activity and provides a Tourist Office at Library Place for all local information on the South West.

From Killorglin, there is a choice of routes to take. Taking the inland route towards Glencar, Caragh Lake is a stunning location with water-based activities such as canoeing, kayaking, sailing and windsurfing, managed by Cappanalea Outdoor Education Centre. Fishing is also immense here with the upper and lower Caragh River being a firm favourite with anglers.

The stunningly beautiful valley of Glencar is located high above Caragh Lake and brings you into a timeless world of landscape, nature and magnificent surroundings. From the vistas of the McGillycuddy Reeks to the vast interior valley of the Iveragh Peninsula, this is a place to linger. Anglers, walkers (the Kerry Way winds through this area), climbers, cyclists, nature lovers, photographers, artists and all outdoor enthusiasts – wow!

From the lakes, rivers and forests in Glencar to the haunting mountain pass of Ballagh Beama and the valley journey to Ballagh Oisín. As one visitor to the area described it “The Ballybeama Gap was the most beautiful pass we ever have cycled.

The landscape was simply stunning and reminded us of the film Lord of the Rings.”

Taking the coastal route, which is better known as the Ring of Kerry, take a detour to Cromane, a low-lying shingle spit at the western end of Castlemaine Harbour.

This is one of the few locations where you can view in one turn, the Brandon and Slieve Mish Mountain Ranges to the north and west and the McGillycuddy Reeks to the south. Great food too!!

• Legend has it that at the top of Cnoc Griffon, known locally as Caragh Lake, there is a wise keeper of secrets. She is revered as the greatest source of historical knowledge in the area and many have made the journey to speak with her in order to piece together the past.

• There are several theories about the origin of Puck Fair. The first is that the fair started in pre-Christian times as a harvest celebration, and is associated with the Celtic god Lug. Another is that a flock of goats warned the people of Killorglin of approaching Cromwellian soldiers, giving them time to escape.

The Great Outdoors Between Cromane and Glenbeigh, there are a number of activities for you to consider. Dooks Golf Course is a favourite links course; the Kerry Bog Village – Ireland’s only thatched village and a National Heritage Award winner; and outdoor activity centres where you can find activities and courses to suit your ambitions!

Glenbeigh is a small charming fishing, walking and holiday village (often referred to as “The Jewel in the Ring of Kerry”), and is cosily tucked in to the surrounding horseshoe of hills and Seefin Mountain.

The Caragh River and the Behy River flow at either side of the village into Castlemaine Harbour. The mountain scenery here is magnificent, and the circuit of the hills from Seefin to Drung Hill, called the Glenbeigh Horseshoe, part of the greater Kerry Way, is one of Kerry’s finest mountain walks.

The famed Ring of Kerry route runs through the middle of the village and many visitors like to stop and enjoy a leisurely stroll.

Trout fishing on Lough Coomasaharn, the largest of the lakes, and the Behy River is very popular with both local and visiting anglers.

You must take time to enjoy the splendour of Rossbeigh beach, which stretches for more than four kilometres along a south north spit into Dingle Bay. This stunning Blue Flag beach is perfect for swimming, windsurfing, sea kayaking, walking, and horse riding on the beach is another amazing experience here and every September, the famous horse races are held on the beach.

However you prefer to spend your holidays, whether it’s bird watching, walking, playing golf, fishing, hang gliding, horse trekking on Rossbeigh Beach, or just relaxing, Glenbeigh really does have it all.

here is no better way to spend a day in Kerry than to explore the Skellig Ring taking in Valentia Island, Portmagee, St Finian’s Bay (The Glen) and Baile na Sceilge (Ballinskelligs). Take the ferry at Renard pier for Valentia Island, which leaves every 10 minutes, and you might even see Atlantic dolphins!

Knightstown was built by the Knights of Kerry and is a pretty village to enjoy.

There are a number of water and land based activities in Knightstown such as deepsea diving, deep-sea angling, kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, abseiling, crab fishing, water volleyball, sailing and more at the marina. A fine heritage centre located in the old Kinghtstown school house traces the history of the island including the trans-Atlantic cable station and its famous son Mick O’Connell.

Step back in time On your travels you can take in the sights at Valentia Lighthouse on Cromwell Point, which was established in 1841.

From there, follow the signs for the Tetrapod tracks. The tracks have been dated to almost 400 million years ago and are regarded among the earliest footprints known to science in Europe.

As you approach the Grotto and Slate Quarry, you will see the excavation of slate as it is used today. First opened in 1816, the slates were used to make benches,

Skellig Ring tables, sundials and various other items and Valentia slate was even used in the roof of the British House of Commons in Westminster.

Take in the amazing views across the island and Geokaun mountain will give you a birds eye treat!

Skellig Michael, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is approx 12km off the coast. Founded in the 7th century, the island was a centre of monastic life for Irish Christian monks.

The monastery is situated almost at the summit of the 230-metre high rock. If you cannot make it to the Rock or want to see a wonderful interpretation of the site visit the Skelligs Experience on the island.

Portmagee is a small picturesque fishing village of brightly painted houses across the bridge from Valentia Island. Renowned as the fishing centre of South West Kerry, the village is well known for its traditional pubs and quality restaurants where fresh fish is served daily straight from the boats. Great local traditional music sessions are regular here.

It is also the main departure point for the Skellig Rock ferries and scenic tours, which also take you past Illaunloughan, a small island that was inhabited by monks in the early Christian times.

The views at Coomanaspig Pass are stunning on both sides - sweeping panoramas over Portmagee Channel and Valentia Island with the Atlantic Ocean and Blasket Islands as their backdrop to the west and Valentia Harbour and Cahersiveen to the north. To the south is glorious St Finian’s Bay with views to the Skellig Rocks and Puffin Island.

St Finian’s Bay with its stunning beach is a perfect place to stop and take in the brisk sea air. This is the home of Kerry chocolate so do indulge.

Baile na Sceilge, Ballinskelligs, nestled between Cahersiveen and Waterville, is a beautiful peaceful village steeped in history and ancient monastic sites. You will discover

• Ballinskelligs Abbey

the home of the Skellig monks when you visit Ballinskelligs Abbey, or you can climb to the top of McCarthy’s Castle and take in the stunning view of Ballinskelligs bay.

Founded by the Order of St Augustine in 1210, Ballinskelligs Abbey is an example of the rich history to be witnessed on the Skellig Ring.

Keep heading south to Caherdaniel and spend a few days with the family in a village full of character and atmosphere. Next up on your Ring of Kerry destinations, will be to visit the unique and traditional coastal village of Castlecove. Sneem Village itself is neatly set on the shores of Kenmare Bay and the Sneem river estuary where it shelters Oysterbed harbour and offers a safe haven for yachting enthusiasts.

On summer evenings sit at Sneem Pier, Reen or Castlecove and watch traditional boats as the local oarsmen and oarswomen train for the many regattas held in the area.

Regattas are held on a weekly basis in July and August – come along and enjoy the fun.

following day, take a stroll through the colourful village and pass by the old stone bridge. Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the local craft shops and taste their extensive and delicious range of traditional and Irish made products. As you continue to explore this picturesque village, you will quickly understand why Sneem has been the winner of several National Tidy Towns Awards.

In the centre of the village, you will also find the Kerry Geopark Information Centre, which will introduce you to the natural geological experiences of the Iveragh Peninsula.

The Geopark is a unique and outstanding landscape with major geological, ecological, archaeological, historical and cultural interests.

The whole region is of international significance because you can see evidence of the desert times (red sandstones), the glacial times (scored and scratched rocks from glaciers) and the Kenmare River – a drowned valley created by sea level rise when the ice melted.

After you experience the unique and outstanding landscape that is the Kerry Geopark, you have a choice of two routes to continue your Ring of Kerry adventure. The first is the eastern road to Kenmare while the other option is to travel northwards towards Killarney through the magnificent mountain pass of Moll’s Gap. There are two fantastic traditional visitor farms to visit enroute, Blueberry Hill Farm and Kissane’s Sheep Farm – great fun for everyone.

Taking the Kenmare road, you will visit the dormant 19th century village of Tahilla, which, in its day, was a busy fishing community.

Further along, you will find Blackwater Bridge, which is a small community divided by the river Blackwater. This area is another well-known spot for fishing and now anglers can catch wild salmon as stocks grow again. This area is a great place to visit as you travel on to the Kenmare region.

Taking the road for Moll’s Gap and on to Killarney, visit the 200 year old Pancake Cottage where children and parents can enjoy some great homemade grub. Leaving Moll’s Gap, you will pass by the McGillycuddy Reeks and reach Killarney National Park where you will experience some spectacular views.

OME years ago, Stan Goddard, a photographer with a rambler’s soul and a passion for history, penned All Roads Lead to Kenmare, a book that revealed how nature, geography and man had impacted this beautiful bustling market town and why it is considered by many to be the veritable jewel in the Ring of Kerry.

Since its origins in 1678, Kenmare has long been one of Ireland’s most idyllic destinations. Nestled peacefully at the mouth of the Kenmare Bay where the Ring of Beara meets the Ring of Kerry, Kenmare leaves lasting memories with its elegant shops, wide range of accommodations, pubs, cafes and restaurants, outdoor activities and stunning scenery.

Kenmare (in Irish, An Neidin or Little Nest) is a popular destination for visitors who are attracted by its many outdoor activities: golf, hill walking and climbing, river and lake trout and salmon fishing, kayaking, canoeing and diving, boating, seal watching, bird watching, cycling, pony trekking and tours of the Iveragh and Beara Peninsulas with Kenmare Fishing Tours or Faungorth Activity Centre.

Worth a special visit are the Kenmare Heritage Centre; Market Day in the Town Square, the 3,500-year-old stone circle (the biggest in the South West of Ireland), Cromwell’s Bridge, and the Pier where the famed Seafari offers seal-watching cruises on Kenmare Bay (Kenmare is Ireland’s seal-watching centre).

Kenmare’s festivals – including a Walking Weekend in June, a Food Carnival in July, and a Choral Festival in November – attract thousands of visitors. There’s always plenty going on in town such as traditional music in the pubs and restaurants, films, plays, concerts and art exhibitions in the Carnegie Arts Centre. Within a few minutes’ drive of Kenmare Town are Bonane, Kilgarvan, Tuosist, the Blackwater Valley and Templenoe, each offering its own blend of outdoor activities, history and hospitality.

These talented natives have showcased their skills time and again, but a lot of their success is down to two projects aimed at putting Kerry’s producers on the Map.

ROM ceramics to stained-windows and from basket weaving to woodcarving, Kerry has an abundant amount of talented producers creating immaculate craft all year round.

Original Kerry aims to promote and work with these craft makers by using their very successful initiative – Kerry Craft Trails.

The purpose of the trails is to give the public access to craft makers and their design process. Participants can then get hands-on with the making of fine crafts while supporting the producers themselves.

Through these demonstrations and workshops, a relationship is built between visitors and the craft makers, which in turn creates an added value to any products purchased. Original Kerry also offers the option of commissioning something more personal from one of the designers.

Whether you have craft skills yourself or are just a little bit interested, the trails cater for everyone. Regardless, each participating craft business on Kerry Craft Trails has the opportunity to witness demonstrations from Annascaul Pottery, Dingle Crystal, Holden Leather Goods, Pat Lawless Furniture and Statecraft in Ballyferriter, to name a few.

There are three trails in total to choose from, a North and East Trail, or the West or South Kerry Trail, all with their own wide selection of talented artisan craft makers.

If you would like to go on a guided Day Tour, they will be taking place on Thursdays in August on the 2nd, 9th and 16th and will depart from Killarney, Tralee and Dingle.

n recent times, Kerry has proved that its food heritage is as rich and diverse as its landscape. Whether it’s a delicious treat from Barry’s Bakery or some tasty Ashe’s Annascaul Black Pudding, you are sure to eat like a king in Kerry.

Since 2011, Taste Kerry has been helping promote the broad range and varied tastes offered by the artisan food and drink producers in the county. The organisation has spear headed some initiatives that support these producers as well as sharing Kerry’s artisan food producers with the rest of the country.

The ideal place to sample the culinary delights of Kerry is at one of the weekly Farmers’ Markets that take place all over the county. Dingle, Listowel and Milltown are the longest established, but each week throughout the summer months markets are also taking place in Ardfert, Blennerville, Castleisland, Glenbeigh, Killorglin, Kenmare, Rathmore and Tralee. HE Dingle Peninsula is dominated by a stunning range of mountains that form its spine. From the Slieve Mish range to Mount Brandon (Ireland’s second highest peak), the peninsula’s rugged landscape will leave even the most journeyed visitor in awe.

Dingle Peninsula’s coastline consists of steep sea-cliffs, broken by sandy beaches, with two large sand spits at Inch in the south and the Maharees to the north. The Blasket Islands lie to the west of the peninsula.

There is no doubt that the Dingle Peninsula is one of the most spectacular places in the world. The region has all the accolades to back it up. The Dingle Peninsula was once cited as ‘the most beautiful place on earth’ by National Geographic and was voted among the top 20 destinations in the world by Trip Advisor.

CNN also recently recommended Dingle as a very favourable winter destination, while The Lonely Planet 2012 awards included a visit to Dingle in their “top ten things to do when in Ireland” and Rick Steve’s Europe Guide mentions Dingle as a ‘must visit’.

Where to set your holiday base

There is no shortage of great places to stay on the Dingle Peninsula. For starters you could make your base in the village of Camp, which lies in the shadow of the Slieve Mish Mountains. There are a number of safe sandy beaches and challenging trails (such as Caherconree with its magnificent views of Munster) to be enjoyed here. Horse riding and angling are also on offer whilst local festivals are great events for all the family.

From Camp you can take a combination of routes south and west. You can take in the stunning mountain pass route through the Slieve Mish Mountains to Inch, the panoramic route over Gleann na nGealt to Annascaul, or the coastal road towards the Brandon Mountain range.

Should you choose to stay near the coastal road at Aughcasla you can visit Glannteenassig Forest. Here you can partake in wonderful walks, quiet cycling roads and fresh water fishing. Another detour further on will take you to the village of Castlegregory and out to the tip of the Maharees (which take in the

stunning sand dunes and majestic scenery).

There are a host of activities here including swimming, world class windsurfing, surfing, kite surfing, amazing diving grounds, golf, fishing, pony trekking and of course, beach walks. Ireland’s longest beach, from the Maharees to Cloghane, is also nearby. There is great fun for everyone here and do take in some toe dipping fun at Jamie Knox’s Watersports with amazing summer camps and windsurfing courses.

Heading further west through the village of Stradbally, you can gasp at the breaking rollers of Brandon Bay on to the strands of Cappagh and Fermoyle.

Try a round of golf at Castlegregory Golf Club or catch a fish on the shores or rivers and lakes of this wonderful area.

Entering the Gaeltacht, be sure to visit An Clachán (Cloghane) and Cé Bhreanainn (Brandon). Both villages are set under Brandon Mountain and on the shores of Brandon Bay. Natural beauty is everywhere here with glacial lakes and valleys, waterfalls, mountain trails and passes and the Atlantic Ocean – a perfect setting for walking, fishing, cycling, swimming, flora, fauna, heritage and culture.

Heading up the Conor Pass is like a geography class field trip! At the little waterfall, stop and climb to Pedlar’s Lake with its majestic craggy mountain peaks and vistas over the glacial valley and hanging lakes below. At the top of the Conor Pass, you can gaze at the stunning views of Brandon Bay, the North Kerry coastline and Loop Head to the north. To the south you will see Dingle harbour and bay, the Iveragh Peninsula and the Skellig Rocks (on a clear day).

Ionad an Bhlascaoid Mhóir, The Blasket Island Centre, is located in Dunquin and is a great introduction to the history of the islands and their Irish Literary tradition. Ferries to the islands are located both here and in Dingle.

You can marvel at the spectacular coastal scenery in Baile an Fheirtéaraigh (Ballyferriter village), the heart of the Gaeltacht, and spend time at Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne where there are displays about the geology, archaeology and history of west Kerry and this summer, there is a special exhibition on whale and dolphins. Links golf, Louis Mulcahy Pottery (throw some pottery yourself) and Irish language courses can all be enjoyed here as well as spectacular walks and heritage sites.

Make your way back to Dingle via the quiet fishing village of Baile na nGall (Ballydavid) and take in the scenic character of An Fheothanach (Feohanagh) as you visit Brandon Creek (where St Brendan is said to have departed for America).

By heading east towards Killarney, you will drive through the village of Lios Póil (Lispole).

Lispole is bounded on the north by mountains and on the south by Dingle Bay and consists of two parishes, Kinard and Minard. At Kinard you can find the small beach of Béal, overlooked by the sea stack known as An Searrach or The Foal. At Kilmurry Bay, in Minard, you can find the remains of Minard Castle towering over a dramatic storm beach of large rounded boulders. Nearby is the holy well of St John, which is still visited on the saint’s “pattern day”.

The Dingle Way passes by Lispole village where you can still see the Lispole Viaduct, an impressive relic of the Dingle and Tralee Railway.

OASTING a superb coastline it is no surprise that Kerry is a watersport enthusiast’s haven. Arriving in Tarbert, having crossed the River Shannon, will give you an idea of the treats you are in for as you probably spotted a dolphin or two on the ferry!

However, what makes Kerry, particularly the Dingle Peninsula and Ring of Kerry, such superb locations for water-based activity is that they have a north and south side. This means that whatever the direction of swell and wind you can normally find a sheltered and safe place to embrace the waters.

Ballybunion is a bustling village located at the mouth of the River Shannon estuary in North County Kerry, which has been attracting people the length and breadth of Ireland for many years. And the moment you set foot on the Ballybunion North or Ballybunion South Blue Flag Beach and feel the breeze of the warm Atlantic waters as you walk along the golden sand, you realise why. Swim or surf; it doesn’t get more perfect than this.

Travelling southwards along the coast you will come to Ballyheigue, a popular fishing destination. Here, you are guaranteed to experience the thrill of catching your own dinner as you choose to fish on a pier or at the beach.

If, however, you desire a relaxing activity, why not try your hand at sailing? Let the stresses and strains of everyday life melt away as you glide along Fenit bay, located just 18 kilometres from Ballyheigue, taking in the sights of the lighthouse and glorious Blue Flag Beach. including canoeing, sailing, and IFA sailing courses. This is a great place to launch your dinghy if you’re in Kerry on holiday!

Moving westwards along the Dingle Peninsula you come to the Castlegregory and Maharees area, probably most well-known for its water sports and an ideal location for a family holiday. Wind surfing, kite surfing, surfing, paddle boating, diving, kids clubs, water trampolines, and surfing clubs can all be found here! There are many schools here and throughout the county that offer activities for children all year round.

Go fishing.....

For those with little experience in water sports, diving in to the activities can be daunting. Dingle harbour has a sailing school and a sailing club which both offer summer courses. There are various businesses operating here which can help to introduce you to sports on the water.

Venturing down to the south west of Kerry is Killorglin, the home of Puck Fair. As well as being famed for the August festival, Killorglin is known for its rowing opportunities. The Killorglin Rowing Club was set up in the 1990s and unlike most rowing clubs in Ireland its season is all year round. There are also great water activity centres here on the inland lakes including windsurfing and sailing.

From here, you can follow the coastline of the Iveragh Peninsula, which is the route of the world-famous Ring of Kerry. Travel from Rossbeigh and Cahersiveen down to Waterville, Caherdaniel and Kenmare, all

famed for their plentiful waterboarding, kayaking and paddleboats.

Kerry is also an angler’s paradise and there are miles of fishing for truly wild salmon, trout and sea trout in the county.

Lough Currane near Waterville, is the undisputed top sea trout fishery in Ireland, producing the vast majority of our specimen sea trout of over 6lbs. 2011 saw the local record broken again with a fish of 13lbs 5oz to a visiting UK angler – the biggest ever Irish sea trout on fly. That’s just to whet your appetite – there are a myriad of lakes, rivers and streams all over Kerry with runs of sea trout, and saltwater seatrout fishing with flies and lures is becoming very popular.

to Killarney’s “beauty spots” are a great way to see the heritage of Killarney town and for those who enjoy race meetings – the Killarney, Dingle and famous Listowel Races are full of colour and great fun.

Getting in to your stride Blessed with exquisite scenery and lush landscapes, Kerry is arguably the best location to go walking. Climb Ireland’s highest peaks, Carrantouhill, take a stroll along one of the many Blue flag beaches to be found in the region or step back in time on the offshore Skellig and Blasket Islands. Indeed, once you encounter the sheer variety of walks and treks, it can be difficult to know where to begin.

Tarbert Bay located in north Kerry offers a superb walking trail. Let your imagination run wild as you uncover the incredible variety of birds and flora that can be found here.

Moyvane, located between Tarbert and Listowel provides a glorious trek through enchanting woodlands. The two and a half mile walk has received both local and national awards, and should be on every Kerry holiday-goers itinerary.

Join the North Kerry Way and make your way down through the county to Tralee taking in the stunning North Kerry Head and the beautiful beaches of Ballyheigue and Banna.

Moving to the west coast, Dingle Peninsula offers nature lovers an opportunity

Take part in any one of an amazing number of Adventure and Sporting Races and Events this year. Adrenalin action packed races to choose from – with running, hiking, cycling, kayaking and swimming all part of the various challenges with some of the most dramatic, breathtaking and remote scenery in the world. Race organisers, such as the Killarney Adventure Race, have designed the routes to be a real test of endurance and mental strength for all levels of outdoor fitness enthusiasts. Teams can enter individually or as relay teams. What a challenge! to explore great landscapes while taking in some of the regions great history. Archaeology sites such as Gallarus Oratory and An Riasc Burial Grounds are plentiful. The Dingle Way, Cosáin na Naomh and a climb to the summit of Mount Brandon are a must.

The Kerry Way is arguably one of Ireland’s most iconic trails. While the walk is 135 miles long, you will not run out of steam as you pass through varied terrain including forestry, national parks and farmland. There are also an amazing amount of loop walks throughout the Iveragh Peninsula that can be enjoyed by all.

That being said, you cannot talk about walking in The Kingdom without mentioning Carrantouhill, Ireland’s highest peak. There are a number of treks up this lofty peak that cater for the beginner and advanced climber and Cronin’s Yard is a great place to start! As you mount Carrantouhill, you will take in views of lakes, farmlands and the vast ocean scenery.

There is also the Gap of Dunloe, a stunning valley that runs between the McGillycuddy Reeks and Purple Mountain. The Gap of Dunloe is a 7 mile long hike and popular amongst walkers, cyclists and those on horseback. This leads you in to the Black Valley which must be one of the most mystical and magical of valleys to visit.

There are superb walks from Killarney to Kenmare which will create the setting for the equally memorable Beara Way.

Kerry Gardens While Kerry’s rugged natural landscape and Blue Flag beaches attract thousands of visitors each year, equally appealing, are its world class gardens which display a wealth of exciting, rare and beautiful plants from around the world. Whether the visitor wishes to take a stroll in a primeval forest, excite the senses in a rose and sensory garden or sit among tropical butterflies in an exotic garden, Kerry offers a garden to cater for every horticultural taste.

The mild winter climate, notably around its coastline, was first appreciated in the mid-nineteenth century when some of the large estate gardens were first planted. Kells Garden, Derreen near Kenmare laid out in the 1870s, and Glanleam (on Valentia Island) display a luxuriant maturity of dramatic

woodland walks, stunning sea vistas and awe inspiring plant specimens. Kells and Glanleam also provide accommodation for those who desire more time to further explore their gardens or other Kerry attractions.

Muckross House and Gardens lie within the world famous Killarney National Park.

Numerous trails are to be found which explore ancient oak and yew woodland festooned with a profusion of ferns and lichens, thriving in the humid micro-climate. Around Muckross House manicured lawns, a sunken garden, extensive rock garden and arboretum are to be found. This is an attraction that takes time to fully explore and appreciate.

Two of Kerry’s most prestigious hotels, Dunloe Castle and Ard na Sidhe, have notable gardens which hotel patrons can enjoy. Such is the wealth of plants to be found within them that a “Green Book” of over 70 pages has been prepared by Roy Lancaster V.M.H. An internationally renowned plants man, he has overseen the development of these gardens.

Tralee boasts a fine 35 acre Town Park conveniently located in the centre of the town. It holds one of the most extensive collections of roses in the country.

Recently a sensory garden has further developed this horticultural attraction.

Derrynane House and National Park in Caherdaniel is the ancestral home of Daniel O’Connell. Now a public museum, the house is surrounded by mature woodland, beautiful walks and Blue Flag beaches. The benign climate is being fully exploited by the gardeners with new exotic plantings.

The pantheon of Kerry gardens increased recently with the opening of Dhu Varren Garden in Milltown, described by visitors as ‘Kerry’s Botanical Garden’. It displays a wealth of “exotica” from around the world both outdoors and in glasshouses. Tropical butterflies and Koi Carp add to the eclectic mix.

This all too brief summary of Kerry’s Gardens highlights some of its less well known, but equally worthy attractions to both the visitor and local community. They offer a variety of garden experiences meeting the needs of the ardent plants man, the casual gardener, or those who simply enjoy hiking, exploring and enjoying nature. One could spend a pleasant week following a ‘Kerry Garden Trail’.
