DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Welcome to the 18th Kerry Film Festival Welcome to the 18th Kerry Film Festival. We are delighted to present outstanding short film from around the world along with national and regional programmes. Our Kerry made shorts programme is growing each year demonstrating the talent creating film in the county. Kerry connections abound in the feature films with our opening film, THE CREST filmed in Kerry and our closing film A CAPTAIN UNAFRAID from Killarney film maker Charlie O’Brien. Kerry Film Festival will host the Irish Premiere of LIES WE TELL starring Gabriel Byrne and we bring SONG OF GRANITE, SCORE and KEVIN ROCHE: THE QUIET ARCHITECT to the Kerry audience. In 2017 we are introducing DISCOVERY FEATURES, a platform for first time feature film makers and we were overwhelmed with submissions for this developing platform. After the success of our industry day last year, this will continue in 2017 with panel discussions, In Conversation events and Q & A sessions. I would like to thank all our funders and our headline sponsors, Kerry County Council, Randles Hotel,

Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Fáilte Ireland and the Arts Council of Ireland. To all the patrons, sponsors, venues, accommodation partners and businesses who support the festival, your generosity is much appreciated. I especially want to thank Tom Cooper at Cinema Killarney for his ongoing generous support and hosting of the festival. We look forward to welcoming those who make film and those who come to see our programme. Film makers are the lifeblood of the festival and the audience are our valued friend I personally want to thank the creative and admin team in KFF, our Jury Panel, our volunteers and the Board of Kerry Film Festival. Go Raibh Míle Maith Agaibh, Have a great KFF 2017 Maeve McGrath Artistic Director.

SHORT

THE WELFARE OF TOMÁS Ó HALLISSY The Welfare of Tomas Ó Hallissy is filmed in and around the Kerry village of Dún Chaoin and directly integrates newly scripted material shot with actors with footage from The Village which was also set in Dún Chaoin.

See Website / Social Media for more details Director: Duncan Campbell. 40 Mins, 2015, Ireland, Digital, Black And White

This new film is set against a fictional visit by two American anthropologists to Dún Chaoin, mirroring the premise of Hockings and McCarty’s 1968 documentary. Campbell’s original material also echoes key scenes from documentary that captured the day to day routine of the village; the creamery, turf cutting, rabbit hunting and gatherings in the local pub.

INSTALLATION See Website / Social Media for more details

is a surreal observation of existence set to an original experimental score. The narrative follows supernatural occurrences within routine events over the course of day into night. Footage surveils various cities around the world, though specific location is never acknowledged or particularly discernible. The film’s title, , is an astronomical symbol used to represent the Sun. It was chosen to reflect the universal, non-linguistic nature of the experience, as influenced by the solar cycle. Dir: Keke Boyman. 2017. 96 mins. CANADA/WORLD

KEVIN ROCHE: THE QUIET ARCHITECT Still working at age 95, Pritzker Prize winning Irish-American architect Kevin Roche is an enigma. He’s reached the top of his profession, but has little interest in celebrity and eschews the label “Starchitect”. Despite a lifetime of acclaimed work that includes the Ford Foundation, Oakland Museum of California and 40 years designing new galleries for The Met in New York, he has no intention of ever retiring and keeps looking forward.

His road to fame began in Ireland graduating from UCD in 1945 and working for 2 years for Michael Scott where he contributed to the distinctive design of Busaras. After more than 60 years in the USA, his first Irish project the Convention Centre Dublin, opened in 2010. Roche’s architectural philosophy focuses on creating “a community for a modern society” and he has been credited with creating green buildings before they became part of the public consciousness.

CLOSING NIGHT

A CAPTAIN UNAFRAID Shot in the U.S., Cuba and Ireland, A Captain Unafraid follows the ‘strange adventures’ of Dynamite Johnny. ‘Dynamite’ Johnny O’ Brien was born in 1837 in Manhattan, though his parents hailed from Cavan and Longford, Ireland. Involved in revolution and ruction from Haiti to Colombia, and Texas to Mexico, in many ways Johnny was a rebel without a cause, that is, until he found his cause in the 19th century Cuban War of Independence. Johnny’s adventures are brought to life through animated segments, illuminating some of the more memorable of the wily mariner’s escapades.

The Beaufort Bar Restaurant opening hours: Friday/Saturday 6pm to 9.30pm and Sunday from 5.30pm to 8pm. The Beaufort Bar and Restaurant offers fine cuisine and friendly service in a superb location - close to the town of Killarney yet in the heart of the picturesque setting of Beaufort village. The historic Bar was established in 1841 and has been owned by the O’Sullivan family ever since. Between the years of 1911 and 1914 it was at the centre of a thriving movie industry when the Kalem Film Company of America used the bar as their base to make over seventy feature films. The Beaufort Bar comes highly recommended in Georgina Campbell’s Jameson Guide, Ireland’s leading independent hospitality guide, which features Ireland’s finest places to eat and drink.
