Dirs. Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Kimberlee Acquaro (US 2012, 89mins 12) The under-representation of women in areas of power and influence in the UK is criminal. This simple, entertaining documentary which challenges the lack of positive female role models in mainstream media – ‘You can’t be what you can’t see‘ - had a powerful effect in America and led to the setting up of educative campaign groups. Although American in focus, it has lessons for here and is a spur to conversation. double friend s bill!
The Minister
Dir. Pierre Schoeller (France 2012, 115mins 15) A winner at Cannes, its bizarre opening sequence which stays long in the mind leads to an intimate and realistic drama framed by the two tragedies faced by a new Transport Minister in a complex and hostile environment. Strangely compelling.
Suzanne
Dir. Katell Quillevere (France 2013, 94mins 15) What looks like a gentle soap – the fantastic Sara Forestier as the truck-driver’s daughter initially appears weak and uninteresting – turns into a Film Noir with a devastating finale. An intelligent gem.

Dir. Andy Heathcote, Heike Bachelier (UK 2013, 98mins U) The surprise hit at the Sundance festival this documentary about the Sussex farmer who, fighting against the control of the supermarkets, decides to sell raw milk to save his farm is an absolute delight. Steve Hook has a remarkable relationship with his 55 cows – be prepared to shed tears.
Dir. Pier Paolo Passolini (Italy 1964, 134mins, 12) It took a gay, atheist Marxist to produce the one true classic film about Jesus Christ. Shot in black and white (beautifully remastered) in a straight-on documentary style in the country-side of southern Italy among its poorest communities, this is a powerful, passionate – and even for non-believers - devotional experience.

Dir. Margarethe von Trotta (Germany 2012, 113mins 12) A very fine, thoughtful, intelligent and absorbing, almost documentarystyle, drama about the German-American political theorist who covers the trial of Holocaust architect Adolf Eichmann in Israel in 1961, out of which she developed the highly controversial idea of the banality of evil.
Dir. Mikael Marcimain (Sweden 2013, 134mins 18) Nordic Noir - one of the most underrated and interesting films of last year. Shot in the style of Tinker Tailor (they share the same cinematographer), this explosive conspiracy thriller, based on real events in 1970s’ Sweden about underage prostitutes used by corrupt politicians, is a complex, understated and gripping view.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas + Talk Wednesday 28 May 7.30pm | Gonzo Bar, Holmfirth | £4.50 Dir. Terry Gilliam (US 1998, 115mins 18) Johnny Depp stars as Hunter S. Thompson’s alter ego Raul Duke in this cult gonzo take on the reporter’s trip to Las Vegas, which turns into a chaotic descent into the psychedelic nightmare of the American dream. It is sometimes forgotten that Thompson was a very fine journalist. His legacy is considered, as is that of New Journalism and Gonzo, with clips from other Thompson related films and documentaries. Plus a chance to drink cheap tequila. Supported by the Gonzo Bar and Journalism and Media at the University of Huddersfield.

Dir. Julian Polser (Austria 2013, 105mins 12) Austria’s submission to the Oscars is a bewitching, unsettling and mind-bending sci-fi parable based on a classic novel about a young woman in the Alps who is trapped by a mysterious invisible wall, forcing her into isolation and survival, that has echoes of a feminist Robinson Crusoe.

Painstakingly crafted by Reiniger, the cut out animated silhouettes bring to life the adventures of the young Achmed as he journeys through the exotic worlds of the Arabian Nights, encountering witches, demons and princesses. Paulina Garcia gives an award-winning tour-de-force performance which is brilliant and ultimately uplifting.
Dir. Manuel von Sturler (Switzerland 2012, 90mins U) A beautiful documentary about the annual Transhumance – a 600km winter trek for 800 sheep, three donkeys, four dogs and the two shepherds, Pascal and Carole. Increasingly difficult as modern life encroaches on their trail, this is a wonderful pastoral hymn to freedom.

Dir. James Cameron (US 1984, 107mins 15) A blazing cinematic sci-fi comic book B-movie classic in which a human looking cyborg is sent to assassinate a waitress… Dark, violent (and feminist?) and fun. Now a staple of popular culture, this is still Cameron’s best film. The template for the dystopian blockbusters that followed, it is introduced by Roger Christofides, Research Fellow at the University of Huddersfield.
Stuart Hall Project + Discussion Thursday 29 May 7.30 | Brambles, Holmfirth | £4.50 Dir. John Akomfrah (UK 2013, 103mins 12A) Hall, who died recently, was for many years Britain’s most influential cultural theorist, concerned with those groups of people excluded from centres of power through race, gender and class. This montage of existing footage with Hall’s own words and thoughts is a really interesting look at Britain over the past 60 years. Followed by a discussion led by Dr Max Farrar, Leeds Metropolitan University, whose work and interests overlap with those of Hall.
The Selfish Giant
In partnership with the LBT and introduced by Shaun Thomas who plays Swifty Thursday 29 May 7.30pm Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield | £6 (LBT) Dir. Clio Barnard (UK 2013, 91mins 15) Rightly acclaimed as perhaps the best British film of the year, this beautifully directed lyrical portrait of two rebellious boys in Bradford who sell scrap in Huddersfield has a lovely but stark script about friendship, poverty and desperation.
Tim’s Vermeer Thursday 29 May 2pm | Brambles, Holmfirth | £4.50 Dir. Shane F. Kelly (US 2013, 80mins U) A Texan inventor attempts to solve one of art’s great mysteries – how did Dutch Master Vermeer paint such detail? Explores the idea that he used optical technology. It sounds a dry affair but this is astonishing, entertaining and profound in equal measures. One of the year’s best documentaries.
