Wish the Honley Show every success in 2014

4

Message from our President, Charles Kaye As the new President and on behalf of the Honley Show Committee, I would like to welcome you all to the 2014 Honley Show: those of you who support us regularly and also those who may be visiting us for the first time. After last year’s successful Show, we pray for fine weather so that the whole family can enjoy a great day out on our beautiful site in Farnley Tyas, with its fabulous views. This year our nominated charity is Woodhead Mountain Rescue, a worthy local charity who provide a valuable service for those who may get into trouble on our local moors. In addition, our Show Committee continues to support a number of local community activities. For a one day agricultural Show, we focus on core traditions of agricultural life. However we also want you to enjoy our other varied exhibits, interests and entertainment including the products available in our Trade Stands and Craft Tent areas; maybe even a small preview of the Tour de France! Finally a big thank you to all the volunteers who work hard throughout the year to put together the Show - the committee, section secretaries and helpers, as well as the exhibitors, sponsors and members who support us every year. Charles Kaye President Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team (WMRT) is a volunteer search and rescue organisation, formed in the early ’70s by the amalgamation of the Huddersfield Scout MRT, Stocksbridge Barugh Rovers and Sheffield Scout MRT that were formed after the 1964 Four Inns fatalities. The team primarily covers the North Eastern area of the Peak District, but can be called to assist in any area of the Peak District National Park, South & West Yorkshire or even further afield – especially during a major incident/search. Two of the teams founder members are still actively engaging in support roles within the team. The team is a member of the Peak District Mountain Rescue Organisation (P.D.M.R.O.) which was formed in 1964 following the deaths, during the bad winter of 1963, of two climbers in an avalanche in Wilderness Gully in the Chew Valley, and a multiple fatal accident during the 1964 Four Inns Walk. Prior to then there were few Mountain Rescue teams in the Peak District. These were uncoordinated and inadequately equipped. The two tragedies in 1964 demonstrated the need for coordination of the few teams that did exist and the need to establish others. The P.D.M.R.O. was established to coordinate the activities of all the Mountain Rescue Teams in the Peak District and thus assist the Police with all mountain rescue incidents. Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team is a self-contained unit with its own equipment, supplies, vehicles and communications. All members are trained in all aspects of first aid and casualty care and can effect rescue from remote moorland, cliffs or crashed aircraft. Every team member wears and/or carries personal survival equipment and can remain operational, unsupported for more than 12 hours. WMRT currently have around 40 full team members. ‘So Much More Than Mountains’ Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team provides an essential service not only to walkers and climbers but also to the local community. Their prime role is to provide a Search & Rescue service in upland or mountainous areas. However, the team is increasingly called upon to undertake searches for missing people in lowland areas or as support during civil contingencies such as the floods in 2007, the crash in Lockerbie of Pan Am Flight 103 and the bad winter of 2013.

JOIN THE ORGANISING TEAM It takes a lot of people to organise the Show and we are always looking for more. Honley Show is run entirely by volunteers and we are always on the lookout for additional people to help year on year. Committee meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month starting at 7.30pm. If you can spare a few hours to help and would like to get more involved with the Show please contact the General Secretary, Sue Purvis on 01484 665900 or email her at secretary@honleyshow.co.uk. Date of the next Committee meeting: Tuesday 1st July 2014. Date of next Show: Saturday 13th June 2015 Community Projects Honley Show has been part of village life for many years and tries to support the community in which it lives. In 2014 money was given to the local Honley Infant & Nursery School to enable the Year 2 pupils to visit a working farm and to see how agriculture affects them. The Committee also made a donation to the Skate4Isaac Project and the Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team.

Your Safety – Please read this Your safety is important. Observing the few simple precautions outlined below and using common sense will help you enjoy the Show safely. If you have any questions, the Health and Safety Officer can be contacted via the Show Office adjacent to the Members’ marquee. As well as the Main Ring events, come and see the following: • There are many animals at the Show. All animals carry micro-organisms that may be harmful if transferred to humans. The risks are very low; even so please note: • Infection is spread through feeding, touching or stroking them or by touching areas or structures, such as gates, pens and fences they’ve been in contact with. • The greatest risk is in contact with animal faeces (dung) – avoid it. • Use the hand-washing stations around the showground (these are clearly marked as you leave animal areas) even if there’s a minor wait due to queuing. • Be aware that a child’s toy or dummy dropped in or near animal areas could become contaminated – act accordingly. • Ideally do not eat or drink in the animal areas. • Follow the instructions of animal area staff. • If shoes or pram/buggy wheels become contaminated you will need to take extra care when you later take them off or fold the pram for storage etc. General • The Showground is a field – it is uneven; please watch your footing, especially if it is wet. • Near to food concessions, be aware of hot surfaces and people carrying hot food or drink. • In the sun, be aware of the potential for sunburn (especially children). • On arrival and departure you’ll be amongst moving vehicles – your safety is just as much your responsibility as it is the drivers - follow directions from marshals. Children • Children often don’t have common sense – parents please use yours on their behalf. Lost Children If you lose your child whilst on the Showground please report the fact at the Secretary’s caravan adjacent to the Members Marquee. If you find a child who is obviously lost and in distress please seek help from a steward. In accordance with our policy on dealing with lost dependents we will try to reunite the child with their Parent or Carer as soon as possible. Major Incidents It has never been necessary to evacuate the Show field due to a major incident – but if this becomes necessary please follow the directions given on the Public Address system and the directions of show staff. Thank you for helping maintain our super safety record. Enjoy your day. Be aware; be safe!
