SPIRIT
Dewsbury Town Centre
This spectacular show based on the dramatic rivalry between two of Italy’s greatest cyclists - Gino Bartali and Fausto Coppi - kicked off the Kirklees based Yorkshire Festival events in style on Sat 12 April. ‘Luce’ performed by Theater Tol told the story of how they raced against each other in the 1940s and ‘50s. Families and children enjoyed workshops earlier in the day making willow sculptures and wire bicycles.

Wed 2 - Sun 6 July From the streets of Huddersfield to the summit of Holme Moss Artists are preparing a mischievous takeover of Huddersfield. Look out for playful surprises like Carole Beavis’s willow sculptures - and don’t miss the unveiling in St George’s Square of a highly secretive project promising to bring a French rural idyll to a very Yorkshire town square. Follow the route of the Grand Départ up to Holme Moss summit where the weekend’s race stage ends, to see the hundred flags produced by community groups with artist Wendy Meadley, framing the sunset. When Saturday morning arrives so will the street performers and dancers with a celebration of physicality including dance, theatre, circus, aerial and more. Saturday and Sunday will have big screens in St George’s Square showing the race, Festival films and some of the other weekend’s sporting events - Wimbledon Finals, British Grand Prix and may be even a world cup quarter final! During the evening, films suitable for all the family will be shown. Make a day or evening of it and grab some tasty and no doubt unusual eats from the Food & Drink Festival stalls lining the streets around St George’s Square.

Centenary Walk on the Wagstaff Trail Holmfirth
The Harold Wagstaff Trail begins at the bottom of Dunford Road, close to the centre of Holmfirth and celebrates the centenary of Harold’s greatest match, the ‘Rorke’s Drift Test’ of 4 July 1914. Wagstaff inspired a GB team, reduced at one point to nine men, to an incredible 14-6 victory over Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The Trail visits locations in and around Holmfirth and includes stunning and extensive views of the surrounding area that were significant in the life of Harold Wagstaff, one of Huddersfield’s greatest-ever sportsmen. Born at Underbank in 1891, a brilliant northern union (rugby league) centre three quarter, he captained Huddersfield’s Team of All Talents to all four trophies in 1914-15 and two GB tours of Australasia.
