Hello and welcome to the February - June 2015 season at the Lawrence Batley Theatre.
THE LBT PEOPLE Dianne Watkinson | Box Office Assistant
Victoria Firth Director Our latest programme sees us revisiting some well-loved classics from fresh angles as well as presenting some exciting new work. The hugely acclaimed balletLORENT will present a dark and unforgettable take on RAPUNZEL written by Carol Ann Duffy (p14), the always entertaining Opera della Luna have revamped the Gilbert & Sullivan classic RUDDIGORE (p16), and Tara Arts’ Asian setting of MACBETH promises a fascinating treatment of Shakespeare’s masterpiece (p09). Oldham Coliseum and imitating the dog make a welcome return with an innovative adaptation of Susan Hill’s novel THE MIST IN THE MIRROR (p12), and Theatre Alibi have also adapted a classic story - former Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo’s I BELIEVE IN UNICORNS (p11). Alongside all this, the LBT also hosts the best in new work with no fewer than three world premieres: THE DREAM EATER, an enchanting product of an east-west exchange between Moby Duck and the National Theatre of Korea (p04); our resident company Dark Horse’s westerninspired romp SNAKEBITE (p10); and Mikron Theatre’s tribute to the WI, RAISING AGENTS (p11). If you’d like to find out more about what’s in store this Spring, do join us for our free SEASON PREVIEW (p06). We look forward to seeing you over the coming months. The Lawrence Batley Theatre would like to thank its funders and business partners

Can you tell us a little more about your job? Working in Box Office is much more than selling tickets. It’s about helping patrons choose the right show, the right seat and the right price. We are also the first point of contact for anyone arriving at the theatre, from visiting actors and crew to people attending a meeting, birthday party or yoga class no two days are the same! Are there any other areas of the theatre you’re involved in aside from Box Office?
What are you most looking forward to this season? As mum to Daniel (7) and Teddy (12), I look for shows we can enjoy as a family, and we all love dance! We are looking forward to balletLORENT’s RAPUNZEL and Daniel can’t wait to see BROMANCE as he was spellbound by another piece of contemporary circus, Flown, last Spring! Teddy especially wants to see I BELIEVE IN UNICORNS, as he loved the book by Michael Morpurgo.
I am also lucky to lead TOURS, TALKS AND TEAS which gives visitors an exclusive ‘access all areas’ pass and a fascinating insight into the 200 year history of our Grade II listed building. I am joined on the tour by our technical team who have great tales to tell about what goes on behind the scenes, then we head into Queenie’s for coffee and cake!

HUDDERSFIELD LITERATURE FESTIVAL
What’s the difference between a story on the page and a performance in front of an audience? Best-selling author Joanne Harris (Chocolat, Five Quarters of the Orange) sets out to explore some new possibilities. Three years ago, Joanne began to write short stories live on Twitter, as part of a project looking at different ways of storytelling. For the first time, with the help of musicians, she brings a fresh storytelling experience to Huddersfield Literature Festival.

Lucky Eric, Judd, Les and Ralph are the original men in black, portraying an astonishing range of characters over the course of one eventful night in a Yorkshire disco in the 80s. All the gang are out on the town: the boys, the girls, the cheesy DJ, the latenight kebab man and the taxi home, all under the watchful eyes of the bouncers. Directed by its writer John Godber and featuring a frightening array of northern talent, the definitive production of this multi award-winning hit comedy follows 2014’s successful revival of Teechers to the LBT stage. Sad, hilarious and full of humanity, BOUNCERS won the Los Angeles Drama Critics’ Circle Award an amazing seven times, and was named as one of the top 100 plays of the 20th century by the National Theatre.

SEASON’S GREETINGS TUESDAY 17 – SATURDAY 21 FEBRUARY DICK AND LOTTIE
It’s Christmas at Belinda and Neville’s house, and they’ve invited their family for a traditional celebration. With cheating at snakes and ladders, fighting over comic books, a bungled infidelity beneath the tree, and a puppet show to scare even the bravest man, Christmas has most definitely arrived in the Bunker household. But it’s not the children who cause the chaos - it’s the adults who let the side down. Huddersfield favourites Dick and Lottie return with a welcome revival of Alan Ayckbourn’s caustic Christmas comedy.
MACBETH TUESDAY 3 MARCH TARA ARTS IN ASSOCIATION WITH QUEEN’S HALL ARTS AND BLACK THEATRE LIVE
Desire, disloyalty, and murder - Shakespeare’s classic story is retold in a modern day, UK setting. An explosive brew of treachery, ambition and passion sets a powerful Asian family off on a path to bloody self-destruction as they find their empire under threat. Using Indian movement and live music, Tara Arts’ take on the Bard’s darkest play is powerful, fresh and contemporary. Robert Mountford (Much Ado About Nothing, Royal Shakespeare Company; Silent Witness) stars as Macbeth, with Shaheen Khan (Rafta Rafta, National Theatre; Bend it Like Beckham) as Lady Macbeth. Based in South London, Tara Arts have been making imaginative connections across cultures for almost four decades.
BLACK WEDNESDAY 4 MARCH 20 STORIES HIGH
Nikki doesn't think that her dad is a racist - he just cares deeply about his community. But when a Zimbabwean family move in over the road, the dog won’t stop barking, the local kids start lobbing stones - and her dad starts laying down the law. This vital and engaging new piece of theatre from 20 Stories High digs deep at the heart of racial tensions in the UK today. Following huge acclaim for Melody Loses Her Mojo, writer-director Keith Saha brings his award-winning company back to the LBT with another boundary-breaking production, featuring lyricism and a live DJ set from MC Chunky.

THE MIST IN THE MIRROR TUESDAY 5 - SATURDAY 9 MAY OLDHAM COLISEUM THEATRE
A traveller's strange tale of threats from beyond the grave brings a ghostly chill over the Lawrence Batley Theatre... Adapted from the novel by Susan Hill (The Woman in Black), this tense, atmospheric new production is a gothic fireside story which the audience is invited to eavesdrop on, an otherworldly mystery that leaves a terrifying eeriness suspended in the air. Following the success of The Hound of the Baskervilles, visual theatre innovators imitating the dog return to the LBT in another collaboration with Oldham Coliseum, creating an unnerving, ethereal atmosphere before the show even begins - and an unsettling feeling that might just follow you home at the end of the night too...

Despite having had their romantic aspirations dashed at every turn, each is looking for love. Over the course of several days, they will meet and affect each other’s lives in unexpected, amusing, but also very touching ways. It's 1917 and Captain Blackadder, Lieutenant George and Private Baldrick are waiting in fear of the dreaded order to go ‘over the top’ from the patently insane General Melchett. With hilarious but pointed humour, Huddersfield Thespians’ stage adaptation of the television series includes the eponymous hero’s skirmishes with a court martial, a German baron and - not least the final charge into No Man's Land. Dir. Michelle Heighway GB 2014 | 59 mins
Janet Suzman and Ian McKellen give a superb account of the latter part of DH Lawrence’s life, from his departure to America in 1924 to his death in 1930. A love story following Lawrence and his German-born wife in their travels through New Mexico, Mexico and Italy, PRIEST OF LOVE portrays through flashbacks the major incidents of their lives.
Oscillating wildly from eccentric to insightful, Huddersfield’s ‘professional lunatic’ Jake Mangle-Wurzel cuts a hugely imaginative yet lonely figure. This humorous, moving documentary chronicles Jake’s highs and lows over a five year period that included a council-ordered clean-up and a devastating fire. After sold-out screenings at Sheffield Doc/Fest and Leeds International Film Festival, Michelle Heighway’s film comes home to Huddersfield.
