Victoria Firth Director Our latest programme sees us revisiting some well-loved classics from fresh angles as well as presenting some exciting new work. The hugely acclaimed balletLORENT will present a dark and unforgettable take on RAPUNZEL written by Carol Ann Duffy (p14), the always entertaining Opera della Luna have revamped the Gilbert & Sullivan classic RUDDIGORE (p16), and Tara Arts’ Asian setting of MACBETH promises a fascinating treatment of Shakespeare’s masterpiece (p09). Oldham Coliseum and imitating the dog make a welcome return with an innovative adaptation of Susan Hill’s novel THE MIST IN THE MIRROR (p12), and Theatre Alibi have also adapted a classic story - former Children’s Laureate Michael Morpurgo’s I BELIEVE IN UNICORNS (p11). Alongside all this, the LBT also hosts the best in new work with no fewer than three world premieres: THE DREAM EATER, an enchanting product of an east-west exchange between Moby Duck and the National Theatre of Korea (p04); our resident company Dark Horse’s westerninspired romp SNAKEBITE (p10); and Mikron Theatre’s tribute to the WI, RAISING AGENTS (p11). What are you most looking forward to this season? As mum to Daniel (7) and Teddy (12), I look for shows we can enjoy as a family, and we all love dance! We are looking forward to balletLORENT’s RAPUNZEL and Daniel can’t wait to see BROMANCE as he was spellbound by another piece of contemporary circus, Flown, last Spring! Teddy especially wants to see I BELIEVE IN UNICORNS, as he loved the book by Michael Morpurgo.

I am also lucky to lead TOURS, TALKS AND TEAS which gives visitors an exclusive ‘access all areas’ pass and a fascinating insight into the 200 year history of our Grade II listed building. I am joined on the tour by our technical team who have great tales to tell about what goes on behind the scenes, then we head into Queenie’s for coffee and cake!

After the sell-out successes of Ugly Duckling and Three Little Pigs, Northern Ballet return to the LBT with their latest ballet for children. A poor shoemaker’s last piece of leather is transformed into the most magnificent pair of shoes overnight. He discovers that not only are the shoes beautiful; they are also magical. Who is the mysterious maker of these marvellous shoes? This retelling of the famous Brothers Grimm story is the perfect opportunity to introduce your little ones to live ballet, music and theatre.

A wonderful world of mysterious marvels is conjured with music, puppetry and theatrical magic as Sheherazade, the greatest storyteller of them all, recounts a feast of fantastical adventures full of heroes, villains and princesses. Ali Baba meets the 40 Thieves, Aladdin discovers his magic lamp, and the Genie appears to the Fisherman in this captivating new adaptation, winner of the Edinburgh Festival Primary Times Children’s Choice Award.

What’s the difference between a story on the page and a performance in front of an audience? Best-selling author Joanne Harris (Chocolat, Five Quarters of the Orange) sets out to explore some new possibilities. Three years ago, Joanne began to write short stories live on Twitter, as part of a project looking at different ways of storytelling. For the first time, with the help of musicians, she brings a fresh storytelling experience to Huddersfield Literature Festival.

Folk musician, playwright, broadcaster and all-round national treasure Mike Harding introduces a selection of his poems and recounts the episodes in his life that inspired them, from his school days to his rock ‘n’ roll years, to folk clubs, fell walking and TV and radio stardom. Although he’s best known as a folk music stalwart, Mike has recently been concentrating his energies on poetry. In this new show, performed in an intimate setting and full of the wit, wisdom and humour that are his hallmarks, he turns the spotlight on this lesser-known part of his career. It’s Christmas at Belinda and Neville’s house, and they’ve invited their family for a traditional celebration. With cheating at snakes and ladders, fighting over comic books, a bungled infidelity beneath the tree, and a puppet show to scare even the bravest man, Christmas has most definitely arrived in the Bunker household. But it’s not the children who cause the chaos - it’s the adults who let the side down. Huddersfield favourites Dick and Lottie return with a welcome revival of Alan Ayckbourn’s caustic Christmas comedy.

Desire, disloyalty, and murder - Shakespeare’s classic story is retold in a modern day, UK setting. Using Indian movement and live music, Tara Arts’ take on the Bard’s darkest play is powerful, fresh and contemporary. Robert Mountford (Much Ado About Nothing, Royal Shakespeare Company; Silent Witness) stars as Macbeth, with Shaheen Khan (Rafta Rafta, National Theatre; Bend it Like Beckham) as Lady Macbeth. Based in South London, Tara Arts have been making imaginative connections across cultures for almost four decades.

At first. The milk of WI kindness begins to sour when she rebrands them the Bunnington Bunnies. They're hopping. With stakes higher than a five-tiered cake stand, a battle ensues for the very soul of Bunnington, perhaps the WI itself! Following Till the Cows Come Home, Mikron Theatre return to the LBT with a world premiere tale of hobbyists and lobbyists, with music by local folk superheroes O'Hooley and Tidow. Alan Ayckbourn’s ‘film for stage’ explores themes of loneliness and longing with great humour and compassion through the intersecting lives of six singletons. Despite having had their romantic aspirations dashed at every turn, each is looking for love. Over the course of several days, they will meet and affect each other’s lives in unexpected, amusing, but also very touching ways. Ayckbourn’s masterpiece treads a fine line between comedy and tragedy. Following its run at the LBT, Dick and Lottie’s production will embark on a national tour. It's 1917 and Captain Blackadder, Lieutenant George and Private Baldrick are waiting in fear of the dreaded order to go ‘over the top’ from the patently insane General Melchett. With hilarious but pointed humour, Huddersfield Thespians’ stage adaptation of the television series includes the eponymous hero’s skirmishes with a court martial, a German baron and - not least the final charge into No Man's Land. BLACKADDER GOES FORTH is one of the most intelligent and funniest British comedies, and a fitting reminder of the futility of war. This May half term young people aged six to nine will work with LBT’s drama tutors on our main stage to create a performance about the journey to becoming a great storyteller, inspired by Story Pocket’s ARABIAN NIGHTS (p05).

How to find us We are located in Huddersfield Town Centre close to the University and just a minute walk from the Kingsgate shopping centre. Parking If arriving by car, signage on the ring road will lead you to the Market Hall multi-storey car park in Alfred Street. There are a limited number of parking spaces for disabled badge holders on Queen Street. There is also an area on Queen Street for drop off only.

Rail and Bus The rail and bus stations are just a few minutes walk from the theatre. The Free Town Bus stops outside the theatre and runs until 7.00pm Monday to Friday and 5.30pm on Saturday.

Donations The LBT operates an optional donation scheme. At the time of booking you will be asked if you would like to support the theatre’s fundraising by donating £1.
