WELCOME FROM THE FLGLFF BOARD Fort Lauderdale is home to one of the largest and most vibrant LGBT communities in the world and even has its own, real “Gayborhood.” Possessing its own distinctive flavor and an ever-growing sense of the importance of community, Fort Lauderdale also deserves to be home to one of the finest LGBT film festivals, which is why we have expanded to a seven-day event this year. You will notice significant upgrades throughout the Festival, from Opening through Centerpiece and Closing, as we have enhanced your Festival experience to make it more inclusive, to increase your desire to see more films and attend more events, and to entice you to let everyone know about your Festival. There are few experiences that can match watching films with characters that depict us, that speak specifically to us, ultimately giving us more insight into this uniquely fabulous world of being LGB or T; making us laugh, cry and think. Watching these films, side by side with others who share that same component of self, is a unique and rewarding experience we’d like to see continue for generations to come. We want to be an important part of the social and cultural fabric of this vibrant community and to continue to build on our previous years of success. We invite you to enjoy our diverse lineup of films and wonderful social events, as our continued success can only happen with your passion, support and involvement. It is your dedication and support that will keep us growing. Let’s make it an amazing time, together! Join us in Miami as well, where we will celebrate our 17th Annual Festival April 24, 2015. The Classic Gateway Theatre The Classic Gateway Theatre Zurich: 1958: The bashful teacher Ernst Ostertag and the cabaret artist Robi Rapp meet one another in the Swiss underground organization called “Der Kreis (The Circle.)” As the two dissimilar men defend their love, they witness the heyday and decline of this Europe-wide pioneering organization for gay emancipation. A doc/ feature hybrid, The Circle uncovers the fascinating universe of one of the first gay liberation communities. Enriched by impressive conversational records with Ostertag and Rapp, the film depicts a decades-long love story and reveals the couple’s inspiring selfknowledge and courage.
Under the neon lights in a gay-friendly neighborhood of New York City, four young African-American lesbians are violently and sexually threatened by a man on the street. They defend themselves against him, and are charged and convicted in the courts and in the media as a “Gang of Killer Lesbians.” With a deep compassion for its subjects tempering its outrage over the indignities they’ve suffered (deplorable conduct of unscrupulous reporters and callous police officers), the film poses a troubling question: How would have this unfolded had they had been four straight white women? www.flglff.com | 17

Myles, a handsome and successful lawyer-- as well as a hopeless romantic -- wants nothing more than to find the man of his dreams to share his life with. His best friend Brody, a hunky and hot Los Angeles police officer, sleeps with every man he meets in an attempt to avoid feeling unloved. Fearing what will become of them when they get older, the two friends make a pact: to be a couple in ten years if neither one has found true love.
After taking a wrong turn in their car, a young gay Russian couple witness what they believe is a vicious gay bashing. Their quandary over what to do about it propels them into ever more dangerous territory. For Anton, the burden of what they may have witnessed outweighs Vlad’s fear of probing too deeply into the incident. Convinced of the police’s indifference, Anton talks his skeptical lover into launching their own amateur investigation into the hate crime.

SNEAK PREVIEW
Cinema Paradiso The Classic Gateway Theatre The Way He Looks is based on the award-winning short (I Don’t Want To Go Back Alone.) Leonardo is a blind teenager dealing with an overprotective mother while trying to live a more independent life. To the disappointment of his best friend, Giovana, he plans to go on an exchange program abroad. When Gabriel, a cute new student in town, arrives at their classroom, new feelings blossom in Leonardo making him question his plans. This sweet, charming, engaging coming-of-age story is truly a gem for audience members of all ages.
Inspired by actual events from the life of director Kate Lane, Fear of Water revolves around Alex and Eleanor, two teenage girls with parallel lives who come from different socio-economic backgrounds. One summer, the girls meet and spend time together. They discover friendship and a sexual awakening that cannot be denied. Amazing performances by the two main characters, as well as a tremendous supporting cast, help to create an utterly charming and sensitive depiction of two girls finding themselves, and in doing so possibly finding that special someone.

Seemingly drawing equal inspiration from Gregg Araki, early Almodovar and the Eurovision Song Contest, Xenia is a road trip not soon forgotten. Strangers in their own birthplace, gay 16-yearold Danny lives in Crete while 18-year-old Odysseus lives in Athens. They cross the entire country in search of their Greek father, after their Albanian mother passes away. Determined to force him to acknowledge their paternity, little do they know that the road to the much-coveted Greek citizenship is not well-paved. A dramedy of brotherly love and outsider acceptance. Xenia is a spirited and audience-pleasing gem.
Daniel cruises Marek in a Paris railway station where Marek hangs out with his gang of Eastern Bloc thugs. Daniel suggests that Marek come to visit him in his apartment the following day. When Daniel opens his apartment door a day later, he is far from imagining the trap into which he is about to fall, which will turn his life upside down. The drastically different circumstances of the two men’s lives reveal hidden facets of the city they share. Eastern Boys is centered around relationships that defy easy categorization, in which motivations and desires are poorly understood, even by those to whom they belong. www.flglff.com | 31

Is there such a thing as a “gay” voice? Why do some people sound gay and not others? Why is sounding gay beloved in pop culture, from Liberace to Modern Family, but also a trigger for bullying and harassment? Do I Sound Gay? explores all these questions and more and includes revealing interviews with Margaret Cho, Tim Gunn, Don Lemon, Dan Savage, David Sedaris and George Takei. A serious subject told in a lighthearted manner makes the film educational and uproariously entertaining.
An outspoken and articulate artist in a turbulent passionate time, Wakefield Poole didn’t think of himself as a pornographer, but as a filmmaker who used his dance and theater background to create beautiful erotic art films that challenged the mind. Many agreed. To others, though, Poole just made dirty movies. Filled with gorgeous archival footage, excerpts from Poole’s lushly photographed films, and entertaining and illuminating interviews with Poole’s contemporaries and colleagues, I Always Said Yes is a story of artistic integrity and disappointment, self-destruction, love, sex, fortitude and musical comedy. www.flglff.com | 35

Started in 2002, the National Gay Flag Football League has grown into an enormously successful organization, with 21 member cities across the country. Every year, the best players from each city compete in the National Gay Bowl, where one team is crowned Gay Super Bowl Champions. This is the story of four teams and their journey through the tournament, and at the same time, the journey to define themselves as gay men AND athletes. Only one team can win, but everyone can be fabulous. Directed by South Florida resident, Seth Greenleaf.
16-year-old Billie’s reluctant path to independence is accelerated when her mother, James, reveals plans for gender transition. After being sent to live with her father, their time together becomes limited to Tuesday afternoons. As James transitions and becomes less emotionally available, Billie explores her own identity and sexuality, testing the limits of her own power, desire and independence. Filmed over the course of a year, once a week, every week – only on Tuesdays – these unique filmmaking rules bring a rare authenticity to this emotionally charged story of desire, responsibility and transformation.

Saturday @ 8:00 p.m.
Director: Wade Gasque Runtime: 76 minutes USA 2014
Director: Suzanne Fogel Runtime: 95 minutes USA 2014
The Classic Gateway Theatre Two estranged gay brothers attempt to make amends in Wade Gasque’s charming small-town drama. Set against the sun-kissed fields of Central California, and anchored by strong performances from Mark Strano and porn-star-turned-leading-man, Frankie Valenti (aka Johnny Hazzard), Tiger Orange pits two diametric opposites against each other— the closeted introvert who never ventured far from home versus the out-and-proud hunk that “got away.” The result is a blunt, playful meditation on queer sibling rivalry and the childhood bonds that force us together whether we like it or not.

Cinema Paradiso At 29, the most long-term relationship lesbian Sasha (Leighton Meester) and straight Paige (Gillian Jacobs) ever had, is with each other. They use their codependent friendship as an excuse not to venture out into the dating world. But when Paige meets nerdy Tim (Adam Brody), and it gets serious, the nature of their friendship begins to shift. Fearing she’s being cast aside, Sasha tries to keep their relationship the same, but does growing up also mean growing apart? Life Partners digs into a particular coming-of-age moment, filtered through the indescribable complexities of female friendship.

The Classic Gateway Theatre During the day, the lifeguards canvas the sand and surf keeping beachgoers safe. At night, these same lifeguards let loose for wild nights on the town. On one particular night, jealousy, homophobia and unrequited lust culminate in a tragic booze-fueled episode of near-fatal bullying. Shifting time and storylines for impact, Drown is a hard-hitting drama set against the iconic backdrop of Australia’s Bondi Beach. While the men are hot and hunky, and the scenery is breathtaking, at its core Drown is a hard- hitting, boundary-pushing and intense cinematic experience. This film contains graphic depictions of homophobic violence.
The Classic Gateway Theatre It is the carnival holiday in 1999, days before the collapse of Ecuador’s banking system.
