prologue PLURALISM

PROGRESSION

BINARY A secret is like a hidden treasure, to be exploited. The intertwining relationship among the three keywords from the semester’s work PLURALISM, PROGRESSION and BINARY were produced in the concept of the final project on Herring Island, THE FOLDS. With its obvious state on site, it is yet only revealed when one journeys through the island.

POINT/LINE/PLANE EXERCISE 01

TO SHOW THE GRADUAL PROGRESSION OF SPACE AND SHADOWS FORMED BETWEEN LINES AND PLANE TECTONICS FROM A STARTING POINT.

Pluralism of planes is explored.

A podium defining flat, ground related space, it is a physical resemblance of exposure. Gradual progression is shown through the gaps between lines and the opaqueness of each planes. The overall structure is diverging outwards to gradually expand the surface area from the initial tip point.

REALISATION

FORMATION OF TRIANGLES Two points emerging from a point is a concept where one single individual is only revealed when there is another individual. This thus forms the idea of exploring the fundamental plane - triangle throughout the design process.

DEVELOPMENT

GRADUAL COMPLEXITY OF PLURALISM With the combination of shadows formed by the gaps between lines, space formed by the transparency of planes and the decentralisation formed by the line extensions, the form of exposing a secret or otherwise disclosing a secret is thus presented in a physical way.

MASS EXERCISE 02

TO RELATE TO UNDERGROUND, THE CHARACTERISTICS OF TOWER OF BABEL IS APPLIED.

Progression of segments is explored. The story of Tower of Babel, which is known as a Gateway to Heaven became an interest in the project. Being a story where people build a city to reach out to heaven, this project thus targets to illustrate an imagination of the unknown and invisible part of it the foundation under.

REALISATION

ADAPTION OF ELEMENTS In harmony with topography and geology, the scales of form and space is explored with the aim of providing different atmosphere. This is done by extracting the fundamental element of the researched precedent and translating it on a horizontal axis.

DEVELOPMENT

PROGRESSION OF SEGMENTS Incorporating the idea of gradually diminishing and the spiraling form of Tower of Babel, transformations were done in which the entire structure is collapsed, depicting the sense of scatter and collapse in the underworld.

FRAME/INFILL EXERCISE 03

RELATING FRAME AND INFILL AS ONE SET OF FORMATION, A COMPOSITION THAT INVOLVES TWO (BINARY) IS APPLIED.

Binary of patterns is explored.

Assembling frame and infill together gives an emergence of a new formation. By scaling and sorting the alternative patterns of infills to be installed within the frames, the spatial concept of the structure is experimented.

REALISATION

CONCEPT OF SPATIALITY Rather than a fixed formula of frame and infill structure, the experimentation of binary concept is done to show different spatial elements of the structure.

DEVELOPMENT

BINARY SYSTEM IN DESIGN SCHEME Starting with dividing and subdividing a square to solid and void space, the binary concept is explored. Alternating patterns allows me to also create an exploration of infill system where the permeability and transparency of infills are benefited.

SITE ANALYSIS HERRING ISLAND

The pavilon is selected to be located at that area in which it is enclosed from the vegetation; implying a hidden ‘secret’ behind the woods from the view when visitors first landed on the island. It is hence a two-route options (left or right) for the visitors to journey through the pavilion. The chosen journey would lead them to different first impression of the pavilion, hiding another secret of architecture behind.

SECRET/THE FOLDS HERRING ISLAND Secrets are something covered. It would never be exposed if there is no one to reveal them from another layer of view.

THE CHOSEN SITE (NORTHERN CENTRAL OF HERRING ISLAND)

THE PRECEDENT (THREE-LAYERED RIPPLE HOUSE, JAPAN)

Implication of a hidden treasure behind the woods.

Illusion created by overlayering of folds.

Located at the northern part of Herring Island, it is considerably a flat land with a diverse vegetation distribution. It is enclosed with trees along the slope at south of the chosen site.

With the three windowless walls incrementally increase in size, it acts as a reference to rippling water in the site context. The walls conceals as balcony and screens the entrance of the house.

THE CONCEPT OVERLAYERING OF FOLDS

SECRET FOR CHILDREN

CONTINUOUS

A virtual frame is set to be the boundary with layers of triangles as its infill.

OF FOLDED SPATIALITY

Triangular planes are erected from the ground in a binary sequence.

SEAM

Screen walls are extruded in the pavilion as a linear continuation of the layers of folds. Despite its parallelism, the screens benefit the illusion within the pavilion. Experience and understanding of the interior architecture could only be done by journeying through.

To unleash the secrets, within the folds of pavilion. LESS IS BORE - ROBERT VENTURI. Folds in definition of the project, is overlayering of planes. Triangle is the plane explored. Being a fundamental plane formed by the progression of three emerging points, it is generated as the basis of the idea of folding design.

above ground and UNDERGROUND PLAN 1:50

MATERIALS GLASS

Clerestory windows at north facade to obtain natural sunlight for the enclosed pavilion.

WHITE SEAMLESS CONCRETE Exterior wall for an impression of a sleek solid mass pavilion.

TIMBER FLOORING Stairs at concourse for the distinction from concrete ground to emphasis its similarity with the triangular facades at the east.

The exterior facades are 1.5metre tall. Adults would realise what the form is like, howver children that are average shorter than 1.5metre would view them as a space for hide and seek due to their curiousity on what is behind.

The underground pathway is limited by the flow of accessibility due to its slanted ceiling. Time capsule is hidden here at the triangular planes where users would first experience this space as an enclosed dark resting space.

In order to show uniformity within the folds, there is a similitude between the stairs and exterior facades. Its presence is emphasised with timber flooring for this part of the otherwise fully concrete pavilion.
