With his first two albums, he maintained a strong presence on the music charts for 70 weeks, ultimately reaching the number 1 spot in the Spanish and Portuguese charts. Twenty platinum albums later, Pablo Alborán became the best selling artist in Spain for 2011. The awards came flooding in; Premio Revelación (Revelation Artist), Best Artist and Best song, and three Latin Grammy Award nominations, and many more awards, all solidified this young artist as a force to be reckoned with. In only two years, Pablo has released three studio albums. His songs have impacted millions of people in Spain, Portugal and Latin America. With more than one million albums sold, he has become the best selling artist in Spain consecutively from 2011 to 2012; a new record for a debuting artist in the Spanish land.

By: Ellen Flores

Born in Málaga, Spain, Pablo Alborán is the author and singer of all his songs. His songs immediately transmit the idea that we are in the presence of an artist that constructs with precision and craft a genuine sound of Spanish pop that is within reach of a universal, emotional audience. Interestingly, he first began making a name for himself on YouTube and later playing shows in clubs all around Spain. The word of mouth and social media outlets created a huge buzz and anticipation that fueled the success of the release of his first album. In 2011 alone, he played more than 60 shows all leading up to a sold out show at Madrid’s Palacio de los Deportes where 15,000 fans gathered to hear this Latin Pop sensation.

“Pablo Alborán” (2011), “En Acústico” (2011), “Tanto” (2012) and “Terral” (2014) comprise the critically acclaimed catalogue of this singersongwriter. Now in 2015, Pablo Alborán has released his newest single titled “#VIVELA”, a song that is one of his most upbeat compositions to date and has become the shining star of this most recent Tour dubbed, Tour Terral. From his album “Terral”, Pablo has received three nominations to the 2015 Latin Grammy Awards. The song “Por Fin” has garnered a nomination for “Best Song of the Year” and a nomination for Terral “Best Long Form Music Video”. His third nomination is for Best Contemporary Vocal Pop Album for his most recent work “Terral”. These recent nominations provide even more motivation to see him live during his U.S. tour this November. Luckily for us Washingtonians, we will have the chance to see Pablo Alborán on Friday, November 13 at the beautiful Howard Theatre, just a week shy of his appearance at the 16th Annual Latin Grammys to be held at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. Grab your tickets now and be ready to be in the presence of this chart topping, Latin Grammy nominee during a very special night in The District! ROCK

By: Rosario Garcia

The popular Tropicalia Brazilian bar and dance club on 14th and U street has been home of some excellent shows recently and will continue its assault on our Latino rock sensitivities by hosting the legend that is Nito Mestre of Sui Generis on October 9, 2015.

By: Ellen Flores

K: Which have been some of the most memorable moments in your 20 years? PR: The experiences we’ve lived through writing, rehearsing, recording, touring and being on stage have been the most enriching experiences anyone could have. An unforgettable moment was playing for our fellow Zapatistas in the indegenous community in Chiapas. Another one that impacted and marked us as a band and as individuals was playing at the Zócalo in México City opening for Manu Chao in 2005. We played before 150,000 people.

Kesta (K): You’ve celebrated 10, 15 and now 20 years. What’s in store during this anniversary tour? Panteón Rococó (PR): Celebrating 20 years of playing rock is a huge reason to celebrate, especially because it’s very difficult to create it in the current environment in Mexico and with the constant changes in the industry, it makes it hard. People can expect on this tour a recap of our history through our songs; from our biggest and tested hits to new songs, and also those that we personally love to play.

K: How does it feel to know that in 20 years as a band, you’ve influenced the musical preferences of generations of fans? PR: It’s a huge responsibility to be able to transcend generations and transmit these messages of tolerance and inclusion that we always include in our lyrics and performances. Over the years Panteón has grown because the kids of those that saw us at the beginning are now coming to the shows and they listen to our music thanks to their parents. To a degree, our audience grew up listening to our songs and they tell us that when they enter a mosh pit or slam, they understand why their parents danced to our music. It has become more of a generational pretext without frontiers, languages or socioeconomic barriers.

K: Touring the world exposes you to new sounds. What are some bands or artists that have influenced you recently? PR: Some that we could recommend are: Seed (Germany), King Prawn (UK), Salmonella Dub (NZ) and Against Me! (US). K: What plans do you have to continue celebrating these 20 years? PR: The plan is to release a live CD/DVD as a testament to what our 20th celebration was at the Mexico City Arena; a very important venue that compares to the grandeur of the Staples Center. K: When touring, what is a must have? PR: A good book, MP3 player, headphones, a good camera and enough underwear! Grab your tickets (and underwear) and get ready to hit the mosh pit with Panteón Rococó at The Howard Theatre on Sunday, October 11. Nos vemos en el slam! For additional tour dates including Philadelphia and NYC visit, www. tickeri.com. █

Sui Generis was an argentinian band that was composed of Charly Garcia and Nito Mestre in the early 70s. They gave their last show in 1975 at the Luna Park in front of 30 thousand fans, and now some 40 years later, Nito Mestre returns to offer us a tribute to this legendary band. Of course they both went on to pursue music careers as solo artists, however, Sui Generis is the band that gave these two their starting base. With a show in both DC (10/9) and NYC (10/10/15) Nito Mestre is taking us back in time to these initial rock undertakings and will bring some serious history and music to the DMV. The opening act for the DC show will be local band, Tres Minutos performing an acoustic set. Don’t miss it! For tickets and information visit, www. tickeri.com.

ROCK

By: Ellen Flores like Astro, Juana Molina, Gepe, Poncho, and Presidente. Curiously enough, Presidente is the indie pop solo project of Rangel brother Quique Rangel from Café Tacvba with Priscila G, also member of the group Quiero Club.

By: Ellen Flores K: In your blog, you post highly varied playlists. Which are your biggest musical influences? M: I’d say the classics. Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and David Bowie. K: For someone that’s never seen you live, what can they expect? M: The live show is the best part of all! The concerts will be acoustic, honest and direct. A recap of my entire career to my latest album to songs from Duncan Dhu.

Kesta (K): Tell us about “Corazones”, what can we expect in this album? Mikel (M): “Corazones” is a very personal album written and performed by me. It’s a project born from my stay at the hospital for weeks due to heart issues. There, I had the idea to write songs about everything that was going through my head at that time. Musically, it is a recap of all my musical influences; it’s a very classic rock album, very 70s. K: The cover art of “Corazones” reminds us a lot of The Beatles. Was this on purpose? M: Yes, The Beatles are in many of the arrangements in this album and in the cover.

K: Which are your favorite songs to perform live (from your solo work or Duncan Dhu)? M: The truth is that what I like most to play are the new songs, but, the audience always asks me for the classics like En Algún Lugar and A un Minuto de Ti, and I love to give them those songs live! K: What future plans are there for Duncan Dhu? M: Right now, we don’t have a clear view of what will happen with Duncan Dhu. I am in the midst of the Corazones 2015 tour, the Latin Grammy Nomination and Diego is recording a new solo album. Mikel Erentxun will be performing new and classic songs this month on Sunday, October 25th at Tropicalia. Grab your tickets at www.tickeri.com and be ready for an intimate performance with the one and only Mikel Erentxun. █

Last time they were in town, we were celebrating the 20th anniversary of the benchmark album “Re” where we sang and danced start to finish to this iconic album we all know and love. Time has passed and Cafeta has never stopped working. Either as a group or with solo projects, the members of Café Tacuba are always supportive of each other’s side projects and push each other to grow. Joselo, is now a published author with his book “One Hit Wonder” and additionally, his weekly column in the Excelsior newspaper is an outlet for his creative musings that is always shared and posted on Café Tacuba’s social media outlets. Meme, is now a solo artist, producer and record label executive. Having produced Juanes’ last album “Loco de Amor”, Meme went on to record his solo project featuring the song “No Puedo Parar” which was featured on the soundtrack of the movie “Las Oscuras Primaveras”. Meme is also co-owner of the record label Terrícolas Imbéciles, which has a very eclectic lineup of artists

Lead singer Rubén Albarrán also has a few things up his sleeve. He continues his work for human rights campaigns and various non profit organizations, as well as, a very loud activism for several initiatives like: Justice for the 43 missing students of Ayotzinapa, No GMO modified food (particularly the 25 different types of corn in Mexico) and also climate change. Rubén is also partner in Mixto Musicworks!, a production company that specializes in music production, cinema, television, internet and video game production.

Café Tacuba is always working on something. And now, before touring Mexico with fellow music giants Zoe, this November 9th, Cafeta arrives at The Fillmore Silver Spring for a very special night that will be unparalleled to any other show because it’s a fact; Café Tacuba live is one of the best shows you will ever see! █

By: Malayna Butler

I’ve personally been following his career for a minute and I first had the opportunity to speak with him in 2013 by way of group video chat via Google+ Hangout sponsored by the digital entertainment hub 123UnoDosTres and eventually ran into him last year randomly after one of his shows in the DMV. On both occasions he was way personable and didn’t hesitate to take a fan pic although it was actually 3:00 am. For the record, my fav songs by him are, “La Fama Que Camina” are “La Pregunta” and “Hablame de Ti”. This artist who is also known as “El Dueño del Sistema” and “El Presidente”, was born on December 13, 1983. His ability to relate to and connect with fans of all ages and all over the world has increased his social media presence to excellent levels. On Facebook he boasts likes from 10,028,318, while Instagram hosts 1.3 million followers where he promotes his clothing line, La Cima Wear. Uberfans can even download his mobile app for everything J Alvarez.

Javid David Álvarez Fernández started making big waves when he collaborated with Daddy Yankee on the song “El Amante” on DY’s album “Prestige” (2012). His career has continued to flourish, allowing him to collaborate with peers including Nicky Jam, Arcangel and Farruko and his participation offers credibility to emerging artist like Messiah, J Quiles, Benyo El Multi, Carlitos Rossy and Pusho. He has also been featured with J Balvin on numerous songs like “Regalame Una Noche”, “Olvida Las Penas” and “Mientes”.

Tours this year have taken him throughout the U.S. and before 2015 comes to an end, this artist from Río Piedras, Puerto Rico will have performed in venues ranging from Miami, FL to Guatemala to Colombia and is slated for concerts with other headliners including De La Ghetto and Zion. J Alvarez was recently featured in a promo video for Miller Time (la cerveza) in which he explains that his journey has been “un sueño hecho realidad” (“a dream come true”). He also reveals that he wants to be the artist who continues to open doors in the genre of reggaetón. Before the weather cools down for good, be sure to take someone special with you to heat up el otoño with J Alvarez at CocoCabana in Hyattsville, Maryland on Friday, October 16. he genres of reggaetón, música urbana and dembow have seen no shortage of emerging artists and visible talent in 2015, especially those hailing from the Dominican Republic. This has truly been the year of Dominicans in the urban music spotlight. “El Súper Nuevo” (born Jairomy Matos Cuevas) is no exception to the rule. Dembow has been around but the ball really got rolling again in April – and in a whole new direction – when noted producer and hitmaker Boy Wonder released “The Chosen Few: RD” featuring up and coming talent straight out of la isla. Those artists, who each bring something unique and special to Latin urban music, have been taking off one by one, including El Mayor Clasico whose recent track “Cogiendo Aviones” is getting much love and attention. Don Miguelo, Mozart La Para, Messiah, Chiko Swagg, Shelow Shaq, Mely Mel and Gullun, among others, are representing the island and are now taking the world by storm. The youthful energy of the music, the realness and authenticity of the delivery and also the delightful head banging accompanied by this mezcla of reggaetón and dembow continued to permeate throughout spring, carried on into the summer and has continued soaring steadily to new heights into the fall. They are also joined in popularity by the likes of performer El Alfa in addition to rising star, El Súper Nuevo, who is also making waves with la mezcla of reggaetón and dembow. El Súper Nuevo, affiliated with Boss Money Records, VMW Music and Crea Fama, Inc., is slated to tour the U.S., Argentina, and Europe where fans are anxiously waiting. This artist is scheduled to make his way to the DMV in November backed by COC Productions. El Súper Nuevo will bringing his dynamic spirit and, at times, comedic flow to the area and is certain to take listeners to a new level with this contagious body shaking music. This style has made his songs popular among other artists of his generation meriting air play on the radio, requests at night clubs, on YouTube and also among DJs in the DR and also internationally. El Súper Nuevo’s sound is boombastic and is not for the fainthearted who are afraid to move their hips or think that bass can be too loud. It is also not for those who take life, and themselves, too seriously to have a good time. Not to mention, it also makes for a great workout mix! Songs by El Súper Nuevo include “Tú No Me Da Nota” (in which he reflects on how his girl used to look when they met compared to how much she has changed), “Debarata”, “Te Falta Bujia”, “Véte con Él”, “Dame La Luz”, “Happy” and “Esa Chapa” with artist LR. He has also collaborated with El Mayor Clasico on “Coje Memoria (Remix)”. His videos tend to have a humorous element and feature him rockin’ gold chains and the latest in urban fashion while sporting the revived pompadour style hair cut with a flaming gold streak. He appears to always be well-coordinated. This artist recently performed on the program “Aquí Se Habla Español”. When it comes to music, the Dominican Republic has been known for bachata, but with the contributions of El Súper Nuevo and other artists of his generation DR may come to reign in other music categories as well. El Super Nuevo will be announcing a US tour for mid-November with various dates through January and February 2016. Vives was born on August 7, 1961 in Santa Marta, Colombia. Before starting his musical career, Vives was an actor for numerous telenovelas. It was not until 1986 that he began recording his first album. His first album and second albums, titled “Por Fuera y Por Dentro” and “No Podras Escapar de Mi,” (respectively) were not very successful on the music charts although the second album was slightly more successful than the first. 1n 1993, Vives was still acting and still recording music. His rendition of “La Gota Fria” proved to be his breaking point. “La Gota Fria” went platinum in Chile with over 25,000 sales. Vives was awarded with Tropical Song of the Year at the 1995 Lo Nuestro Awards. Since 1986, Vives has released fourteen albums. Since 1982, Vives has had seventeen acting roles. His latest album titled “Mas + Corazon Profundo” won Best Tropical Album at the 2015 Grammy Awards. When not recording or acting, Vives divides his time between Miami and Colombia. He is married to Claudia Elena Vasquez, the former Miss Colombia. He has two sons and two daughters.

Marco Antonio Muñiz was born in New York City on September 16 in either 1968 or 1969 to Puerto Rican parents. His birth year varies according to different sources. In order to avoid being confused with the Mexican singer, also named Marco Antonio Muñiz, he changed his stage name to Marc Anthony. His first musical projects were sung in English and were in freestyle, a form of electronic dance music popular in New York City. In 1992, Marc Anthony was given the opportunity to open for the legendary Tito Puente. He departed from freestyle and began recording salsa and other Latin styles of music. Inspired by Tito Puente and Juan Gabriel, Marc Anthony released his first album in Spanish called “Otra Nota” in 1993. Just two years after the release of “Otra Nota,” Marc Anthony won his first Billboard Award for Hot Tropical Artist of the Year. Like Carlos Vives, Marc Anthony has also had an acting career. He starred in Bringing Out the Dead with Salma Hayek and in Man on Fire with Denzel Washington. Marc Anthony has been married three times, most notably to Jennifer Lopez. In 2014, he married Shannon de Lima, a supermodel. He has five children. In total, Marc Anthony has sold over 12 million albums all over the world.

Hope you enjoyed these fun facts about these two amazing artists. Don’t miss your chance to see them together this October 11th at EagleBank Arena! Continuing into October, the 26th AFI Latin American Film Festival offers a variety of the best films from Latin America, Spain, and Portugal. If you haven’t seen some of these films, there’s still a chance to do so in the final days of the festival running through October 7th. Here are a few of the films we recommend you catch before the festival comes to a thunderous end:

Justin Webster – Colombia

A documentary blending archival footage, interviews, and excerpts, the film tells the tale of perhaps one of the most internationally celebrated Latin American writers, Colombian Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Reconstructing the writer’s life, British director Justin Webster delves into Garcia Marquez’ life through testimony of his family, friends, and colleagues. Filming in several places of significance to the writer like Colombia, France, Mexico, Cuba, and Spain, the film crew had the chance to create a sense of authenticity in tracing Gabriel’s important milestones. The documentary features interviews with figures such as former president Bill Clinton, former Colombian president Cesar Gaviria, and his brother, Jaime Garcia Marquez. Official Selection, 2015 Cartagena, Lima Film Festivals.

a

The first U.S. feature to be shot entirely in Cuba since 1959, Without Wings is the story of 70 year old Luis Vargas, a retired journalist, who learns of the death of the one that got away, ballerina Isabel Munoz. Drifting between his memories and the present, trying to regain a picture of his love affair, Luis walks the street of Havana. A beautifully shot film with a rich and passionate soundtrack, Without Wings is bound to capture your attention. Official Selection, 2015 Los Angeles Film Festival.

Pablo Larraín – Chile

A film tackling a contentious subject, The Club is the absorbing tale of a group of exiled catholic priests living in isolation in a beach town atoning for past indiscretions. Living a quiet and monotonous life until a newcomer arrives to rattle and uncover their dark past, the film dares the audience to reflect upon the complexity of the issues it touches upon. Grand Jury Prize winner 2015 Berlin Film Festival.

Stephen Daldry – Brazil

This Brazilian thriller follows a group of boys who find a wallet while looking through a landfill near a Rio favela. They realize who and what the wallet’s owner was trying to accomplish and, with the help of two missionaries (one starring actor Martin Sheen), they uncover and try to outrun a trail of lies, corruption, and danger. Audience Award, 2014 Rome Film Festival. Trash will be the main feature of the closing night of the AFI Latin American Film Festival on October 7th, closing out a great display of the best and greatest of Latin film artistry and talent. A jack of all trades, Ricky Martin’s interpretive capability has allowed him to flourish, innovate and explore with each project he’s embraced. From classic Latin Pop ballads in his first albums to reggaeton laced hooks, American pop and even electronica beats, Ricky is a fearless artist. The first time I saw Ricky Martin in concert was during his 2007 tour Blanco y Negro at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico and I was blown away by the caliber of his live show. Experience has it’s benefits, and for Ricky, a lifetime in show business has made him the seasoned icon we see today.

Thirteen studio albums, with the newest one titled “A Quien Quiera Escuchar” with the addictive singles “Adiós” and the sexy “La Mordidita”, countless awards including Grammy and Latin Grammy’s, judge on “The Voice” Australia and now judge on Univision’s “La Banda” where he is teaming up with Latin Grammy Award Winners and Latin Music Legends Laura Pausini and Alejandro Sanz, Ricky Martin is a model for dedication and success. How he juggles all these projects along with touring the world and his fatherly duty to his two beautiful twins Matteo and Valentino is truly admirable. Even the queen of pop Madonna recognizes his talent and dedication. In one occasion, Ricky revealed some sage advice that Madonna gave him, she said “Ricky, the day fame controls you, you’re fu*ked. So better yet, we are going to control our own fame,” and Ricky has done just that. His artistic career is filled with milestones, awards and invaluable moments. When off stage, Ricky has found mediums in which to channel his talents. As an author, he’s published two books. The first, his autobiography “Yo” (Me) which sheds light into his personal struggles and turmoil of living a life of secrecy and sacrifice for his career, Ricky embraced the challenge to reveal his sexuality to the world and finally find the freedom he had always yearned for. A moment that served as inspiration for so many people around the world, Ricky used his

public figure as a vehicle for advocacy and awareness on issues that affect the LGBTQ community as well as humanity itself. Issues like bullying, human trafficking, child exploitation, gender equality, gay marriage, surrogacy, adoption and so many more. Ricky has done his part to ensure that these subjects can now be talked about openly and without so much fear of judgment, something that in the past was unheard of especially in the Latin community. With a return to the limelight with his autobiography and his music, Ricky has also published a children’s book titled “Santiago The Dreamer in Land Among the Stars”. Paternity has inspired Ricky in more ways than one and this project is a prime example of how this creative and innovative artist keeps current and up to date with the world in which we live and how he relates to the world and his fans. Connecting with his fans is one of the things Ricky does best and as an actor, his vocal talents have graced the big screen in more than one occasion. First, in his role in the animated Disney movie “Hercules” where he recorded the inspirational theme song “No Importa La Distancia” (Go The Distance) and played the starring role of Hercules, now Ricky Martin has lent his voice to the Spanish version of the smash sensation “Minions” where he plays “Herb Overkill” the villain and partner of “Scarlet Overkill” voiced by the enigmatic Thalía. Ricky’s professional range is astounding, even a legion of little yellow minions would agree!

/ 19

A man of many trades and talents, Ricky’s passion and joy for each project he takes on is palpable, with his foundation “The Ricky Martin Foundation”, he’s changed the lives of thousands. As an entertainer he has taken his native island Puerto Rico into all corners of the globe. His published author works have inspired so many to be brave and find their freedom. In his acting roles he’s brought joy to the audience but ultimately, it’s all about the music. With his voice, Ricky has achieved so many career milestones that require a published book of their own. From singing the World Cup anthem, bringing Latin pop to the television screens of millions around the world at the Grammy Awards to singing with the biggest names in the music industry for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta anthem “Puedes Llegar” (Reach), the fact is that Ricky Martin has established a true legacy that spans all areas of the arts; a legacy that few have ever achieved and that will always be cherished in the memory of those who saw it in the making. Ricky Martin’s One World tour arrives to the EagleBank Arena (formerly Patriot Center) in Fairfax City on Friday, October 9th. For tickets visit www. ticketmaster.com. █

Growing the artistry and international reputation of the Washington Ballet, training the next generation of dancers through The Washington School of Ballet; and deepening the organization’s commitment to community engagement through the visionary programs of DanceDC and the Washington Ballet @ THEARC. During his “inthewings: Latin Invasion” event, Mr. Webre will share how Latin artists and culture have assumed a primary place in the worlds of music and dance, and discuss how they are making unique contributions to artistic sensibilities.

The Washington Ballet’s Artistic Director, Septime Webre, is Cuban American and will be holding an event this year titled “inthewings: The Latin Invasion”, where he will share how Latin artists’ cultural heritage influence new works in the artistic world. Appointed as Artistic Director in June 1999, Mr. Webre has developed a three-pronged

As a choreographer, Mr. Webre’s full-length productions include The Great Gatsby, ALICE (in wonderland), Hemingway: The Sun Also Rises, and a historic Washington, D.C.–inspired The Nutcracker. His works appear in the repertoires of many companies in North America, including Pacific Northwest Ballet, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens, Ballet Austin, Cincinnati Ballet, Aspen Ballet, Sacramento Ballet, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Atlanta Ballet, Ballet West and Aspen/Santa Fe Ballet, among

others. As a dancer, Mr. Webre was featured in works by Balanchine, Taylor, Tudor, Ailey, and Cunningham, as well as principal and solo roles from the classical repertoire. Mr. Webre has sat on the boards of Dance/USA, the Cultural Alliance of Greater Washington, and Dance Metro DC’s Advisory Committee. He has been honored by Young Audiences of the District of Columbia and been a recipient of a number of fellowships for his choreography. Having graduated from the University of Texas with a B.A. in history and pre-law, it’s unusual that Mr. Webre followed a passion for dance, however, judging by his many successes and contributions to diversity in the ballet, we are glad he did. You can purchase tickets for the various “inthewings” events for $25 per inthewings or attend ALL inthewings events which will be held at 6:30PM on October 5, 2015, March 14, 2016, April 6, 2016 and April 25, 2016 at the England Studio Theater, 3515 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20016. Temperatures are cooling down and this year designers want you to feel as good as you look. Runways featured a broad range of luxurious fabrics and rich textures, and among these were many velvet pieces. Velvet is incredibly soft and the perfect weight fabric for fall weather. Try sporting velvet ankle boots with fringe detail or skin tight velvet over the knee boots. Velvet skirts pair perfectly with a loose sweater or crop top worn underneath a soft blazer. Anyway you choose to wear it you’ll feel beyond comfortable and confident.

et with us to give us the inside scoop on their mission, “We’ve been open 10 months and have got our local neighborhood regulars, mostly families who come for dinner and brunch, however, we’ve been expanding our customer base beyond Bloomingdale. Our focus is serving good authentic food to the local neighborhood and beyond.” When asked what makes El Camino authentic, Frankie answered, “Our menu items and authentic Mexican recipes and ingredients. I live in Maryland (Hyattsville area) where authentic Mexican food can be found everywhere and we’re trying to bring that same authenticity to El Camino. We order our “telera” bread from a Mexican Bakery in Hyattsville and bring it here to make our tortas (Mexican Sandwiches).” Frankie tells us that El Camino is still introducing new menu items and

expects to release an updated menu sometime this Fall. “We’ve been testing some new dishes and offering them up as specials to see how they do. One item that I’m sure will be added is our Queso Fundido, it sold out the first time we offered it.”

The Empanada de Pollo is another clear favorite served hot and crispy topped with a smokey chipotle salsa. Next was the Carne Asada which was cooked medium making it juicy and tender and served with rice and beans, as well as, pico de gallo, avocado, and fresh tortillas.

El Camino hasn’t shied away from offering traditional Mexican dishes like Huitlacoche (corn fungus) tacos and lengua (beef tongue). “We want our clientele to experiment and try new things. Our staff is trained to answer questions and make recommendations on traditional dishes to try like our brunch chilaquiles or huevos divorciados or soups.”

El Camino certainly saved the best for last when they brought me the passion fruit flan topped with pomegranite seeds and coconut cookie. This flan is what dreams are made of. Last dying wish worthy and certainly worth a visit to El Camino alone. This creamy, tangy, sweet invention promises to be addictive so beware!

For the tasting we tried a little bit of everything. Up first was the creamy yet chunky Guacamole with chips. Made fresh, the chips are perfection not too greasy and the right amount of crunch. The guacamole was a great combination with the chips although if eaten alone could be a little spicier (what can I say, I like it spicy!)

Something else I really appreciated was the attention to detail in plating the dishes. Everything looked worthy of an Instagram pic (or two) served on mismatched china plates (just like any Mexican mom has in her cabinet at home).

Next came the tacos, I was happy to split my lengua and chicken tinga tacos but the taco de huitlacoche was all mine! This vegetarian option is perfectly cooked, seasoned and served with salsa and crema Mexicana. Similar to a mushroom, the Huitlacoche really shines here. The Chicken Tinga and Lengua tacos were also juicy and tender. The Chicken Tamal en salsa verde was outstanding. Cooked and served on a corn husk, the tasty tamal is topped with a little salsa verde which takes it over the top.

El Camino also offers inventive drinks to include many variations of the margarita such as the Alejandra a cucumber, jalapeño and basil concoction not for the faint of heart. They also sample mezcal and pisco drinks and offer Negra Modelo and DC Brau’s El Hefe Speaks on tap. Since El Camino is open late they have started a Noche de Musica Latina once a month on Mondays. The next installment is scheduled for October 19th. The DJ spins Latin Music, some of the tables are cleared out for dancing, and there are several food and drink specials throughout the evening ($5 margaritas & $5 housemade rum punch all night; late night tacos from 10:30 - 11:30; late night happy hour from 11:30 til close). VIDEO OF THE MONTH

ECHOSTAGE LINEUP

Hot on the heels of her digital single release for “Un Beso” last September, two time Latin Grammy winner Carla Morrison is now premiering “Un Beso” the music video. Directed by Julio Muñoz, Produced by RaRaRa Films, and featuring postmodern dance choreography by Fana Adjani the video is a deviation from Carla’s previously soft sultry romantic videos. “Un Beso” is a sexy song where an ever romantic Carla warns her lover that she will kidnap him to steal a kiss. Although the song lyrics are passionate, the music video is…well scary. Carla loses her now infamous red locks and wears black and blonde hair extensions for the video which is shot in black and white except for a few shots. Dressed in all black she dances around a painted bearded man who she seems to be running from and toward all at once. To say the video is disturbing is putting it mildly, however, the song manages to cast a spell on the audience just the same. “53mil views en menos de 24 horas!!! Mil mil gracias!!!!! ‪#‎UnBeso‬‬‪ #‎AmorSupremo‬‬,” Carla Morrison thanked her fans for the 53k views in less than 24 hours on her Facebook page. “Un Beso” was featured on Beats 1 #WorldRecord, one of the first Latin artists to be featured on this promotion. Carla will be releasing her new album, “Amor Supremo” later this fall. █

Friday, October 2: Future — There may be rappers that sell more records, but when it comes to crowd reactions, it’s hard to top the ATL’s own Future. He kicks off Echostage’s October lineup. (Doors open at 9PM, 18+) Saturday, October 3: J Balvin— w/Becky G. J. Balvin became a superstar off his smash reggaeton hit “6 .A.M.” Now one of the most prominent names in “el genero” he brings the party to Echostage. (Doors open at 8PM, All Ages) Saturday, October 10: DVBBS — Canadian duo DVBBS (pronounced “dubs”) are known for their energetic big room house and, “Tsunami”, their international collab with Borgeous. (Doors open at 9PM, 18+) Sunday, October 11: Fetty Wap — The “Trap Queen” hit maker brings his brand of crowd-pleasing rap to Echostage in October. (Doors open at 9PM, 18+) Friday, October 16: Kaskade —w/Cid. Is it safe to apply the term “dance music” legend to Kaskade, yet? The music is as accessible as it is emotionally evocative. And the tasteful polish separates Kaskade’s work from the banger-heavy EDM that rules the day. (Doors open at 9PM, 18+) Saturday, October 17: Mega DC Feat. Nero — Nero are known for their dubstep/electro groove and ability to rock a crowd. (Doors open at 9PM, 18+) Wednesday October 21 and Thursday October 22: Disclosure — w/Claude VonStroke, Pomo. This will be the year of Disclosure. The time just feels right for the Brit dance-music duo’s second album to break through to the mainstream even more than their widely loved debut. (Doors open at 9PM, 18+) Saturday, October 24: Duke Dumont Live — Duke Dumont is a great example of everything that’s right about dance music today. Like Disclosure, the Duke is Brit (we Americans love our British dance music) who is updating the soulful vibes of classic house music and making it new again. (Doors open at 9PM, 18+) Sunday, October 25: Safe in Sound Festival — Featuring: Bro Safari, Datski, Zomboy. w/Dotcom, Terravita. A bit more aggressive than what the usual EDM consumer is used to. Be prepared to bass out. (Doors open at 8PM, 18+) Friday, October 30: Cash Cash + Tritonal — Cash Cash’s EDM oriented groove does dance pop the way it should be done. Throw Tritonal’s melodic trance vibe into the mix and you’ve got the perfect warmup for Halloween. (Doors open at 9PM, 18+) Saturday, October 31: The Chainsmokers — w/ SNBRN, Ansolo, Speaker of the House, Luca Lush. A packed lineup of dance music with some excellent DJ/ Producers. Not a bad way to spend your Halloween. (Doors open at 9PM, 18+) █

LOCAL TALENT

/ OCTOBER 2015

By: Gloria Turin

Moises grew up in a neighborhood surrounded by gangs and drugs, but he wanted a better future for himself. Like any other dreamer, he started from the bottom and worked his way up little by little. Not only did he have to deal with constant rejection, but also with people not believing in him—telling him that he wasn’t good enough. Humbly, he stated that these comments only served to motivate him further. His mother, the love of his life and his biggest motivator, was always by his side reminding him to keep his feet on the ground and that the opportunity he was longing for would soon arrive. The look on Moises’ eyes when he talked about his mother gave me the chills; I have no doubt that this man has great admiration and everlasting respect for the woman that gave up everything to see him succeed.

As an audience, many people are very curious to know who the person behind the TV screen might be, and I was no exception. We agreed to meet up at a coffee shop and I showed up two hours late due to bad traffic. He confessed that his biggest pet peeve was people being late but he chose to wait patiently. In the few hours that we shared together, I learned so much from him that I strongly believe that all his followers should know what kind of a person is he.

Moises’ passion for sports, soccer in particular, started at a very young age. He was either on the field playing or in the bleachers narrating the game. These experiences were preparing him for his next step in life. Approximately seven years ago, he began his career as a production assistant for Direct TV Sports and Fox Sports in the City of Los Angeles. He craved knowledge and he held every possible position behind the sports news scene. In addition to this, Moises wrote articles for various sports websites and would eventually become part of the Fox Deportes and La Vox Deportiva online team. This got him the opportunity to travel to South Africa to cover the World Cup.

In 2012, Moises moved to Washington DC to join Telemundo as a sports anchor. He was very excited for the opportunity that he was given but noted that it was a bit hard being away from his family. After a few years in the area, he now feels very welcomed and supported by all his followers and friends. His days are pretty full. He spends most of his time reading and learning about sports and perfecting his performance on TV. If he was not busy enough, he also serves as the play-by-play announcer for the D.C United live games during the weekends. Also, he and his business partner started a motivational work out site in social media called DQGF “Don’t, Quit Get Fit.” Moises’ ultimate goal is to inspire people of all ages to stay healthy and fit by exercising at least 20 minutes three times a week and to not quit. And to top it off, his report on a local soccer coach Brenda Sosa, was nominated for the Emmy awards a few days ago. Good luck Moises! There is so much more to learn about Moises Linares. He is a pleasant, confident man with a great potential. He is motivated to become the best version of himself and get to the next level inspiring others. ALBUM REVIEWS By: Juan Leon

The diasporic explosion in the underground of global Latin dance music is as thrilling to witness as it is sad to see the stagnancy in the mainstream of United States pop and Top 40. Music lovers couldn’t be blamed for losing hope in the polished soullessness and rampant commercialism of today’s dominant sonic offerings if it weren’t for the fact that such electrifying alternatives are easily, readily available. Miami-based artist Mr. Pauer’s latest release Orange is firsthand evidence. A talented producer, Mr. Pauer makes Orange a joyous encounter with influences within and outside of classic Latin genres: rock, electro, house, cumbia, tropical are all weaved together in a way that simultaneously feels familiar and excitingly new. Infectious, danceable — Orange’s rhythmic tracks stretch out with the kind of wild irreverence that made Calle 13’s early work so invigorating. The range of influences Mr. Pauer is channeling lends emotional weight to his dancefloor-killer beats. Guest vocalists ground dembow beats with soulful energy. Let’s take this track-by-track: Album opener “Take You By the Hand” is a delightfully modern highlight. Karina Hayes feature on the track to provide a spirited counter to the track’s dem bow-esque backbeat. It sounds (as do many of the tracks on Orange) like Mr. Pauer’s answer to Major Lazer’s ubiquitous “Lean On.” “Pasion” follows “Take You By the Hand” with a similar concept — Guest vocalist Dama Vicke plays the foil to the off-beat rhythm structure punctuated with synth stabs and latin percussion. “Viento” feels like a Spanish-guitar epic thrown filtered through a hip-hop DJ’s head with the ghost of salsa thrown in. “Tu Cucumbia” combines stuttering house vocalizations with champeta vibes. “Quiero” is a fitting end to an instant classic of an album. Stuttering grooves punctuated with reeling changes in tempo and backed by vocals proclaiming “I want all that I see. And I see all that I want…” Indeed. █

Nacional Records is known for releasing outstanding albums from both established Latin Alternative artists and new talent. On September 4, 2015, they did it again releasing the debut album from The Chamanas called Once Once. This new talent from El Paso, Texas, builds a metaphorical bridge between Mexico and the US. Sharing the border with Ciudad Juarez one of the most notoriously violent borders in the world, The Chamanas bring a strange peace to their music drawing influences from 70s Mexican pop and modern indie music. Once Once is a solid effort with various catchy tracks making it easy to listen to including the witchy “Embrujo” and warning in “Maldad”. Their dreamy sound is reminiscent of some of Hello Seahorse’s earlier work and the connection is made easier due to some similarities in lead singer’s Amalia Mondragon poignant vocals. The album has already garnered some attention being featured in the Spotify Spotlight series. Their video for the first single “Alas de Hierro” has debuted with a solid 40,000 views and growing. The “Alas de Hierro” video sets the song up in a strange cabaret style rhythm with strong synth undertones while also managing to swing into dark pop territory. If you like bands such as Hello Seahorse, Enjambre, and Zoe then Chamanas is definitely worth a listen. █

LOVE

By: Malayna Butler

It was one of salsa’s biggest nights this year in the DMV! In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, salseros came from far and wide on the night of Saturday, September 12th to celebrate in the company of legendary Venezuelan singer and musician Oscar De Leon. Held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC the event also commemorated the anniversary of La Nueva 87.7 FM. Audience members from Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Puerto Rico and many other nations came out to support. Oscar De Leon graced the stage following a jazzy instrumental intro of “My Favorite Things”. The artist of international fame took audience song requests and sang “Detalles,” “Ran Kan Kan,” “Calculadora” and other salsa favs in addition to a Spanish language rendition of the popular song “My Way”.

Once again visiting the area, Los Enanitos Verdes took the stage of the Fillmore in Silver Spring on a Sunday night on the 13th of September giving their fans a great show. The group visits the area often, and yet every show, their audience are treated to an amazing time. This time around, Boston’s Stone Giants opened for Enanitos. Despite singing in English, the band managed to capture the attention of Enanitos’ guitar solo-loving fans despite their short set. Enanitos hit the stage at 9:30pm to anxious and excited fans. Their excitement grew song after song, hitting them with their most memorable hits like “Amores Lejanos” and “Cordillera”. The band also played several songs from Tic Tac including “Besos Violentos” and “No Me Dejes Caer” which blended nicely with the rest of setlist. However, they could not leave without playing the super classics, the energetic “Guitarras Blancas”, “Luz de Dia” (for the ladies), “Lamento Boliviano”, “Te vi en un tren”, and “Metro Balderas”. No doubt all of their fans left with a smile on their face.

If you really like soccer and an afternoon of fun with friends and family this game was the place to be last September 4th, 2015. RFK was full of “futbol” lovers with Peruvian fans showing up in huge numbers. Being the first time Peru played against the United States, and the first time Peru played in DC, the excitement was felt in the air, in the fireworks, the banging drums, painted faces, Peruvian flags...you name it! Eventhough the red and white lost due to a penalty kick by team USA, the screaming and passion for the game never stopped (not to mention the anticuchos were good). As usual, tailgating and pregaming were a big part of the night. Food trucks selling pan con chicharron, along with the burgers and anticuchos on the fan grills filled RFK with the delicious smell of victory everywhere.

I am in a long distance relationship and I am growing increasingly resentful as the time passes, as we have not seriously discussed moving closer to one another. I find it very difficult to think of a future togetherand resentful because of how challenging it is to live apart, especially as I struggle with adjusting to my new environment. I’ve read about the challenges of keeping together in a LDR and how much of “staying together” is in the everyday shared activities, like having dinner or going to the grocery store together. Is it normal to feel this resentful? What advice could you share to address some of these problems? LDR challenged Dear LDR challenged: It makes perfect sense to me why you are feeling resentful, time keeps going by and you are not getting your needs met in this relationship! But I wonder if your partner knows how much the distance is affecting you, and how important it is for you to discuss moving closer to each other. You said that you have not seriously discussed it yet, and I’m unclear as to what gets in the way of having that crucial conversation. Are you quietly waiting for your partner to bring up the topic? Or have you tried mentioning it casually and found that it goes nowhere? As you mentioned, everyday shared activities are helpful, but the most important thing is for you to actually know and feel that you are a priority for your partner. You have to be able to trust that you can count on him or her unconditionally, no matter where you are currently living. Having been in a long distance relationship myself (with a happy ending!), I know that at first you make it work, but after a while when you become emotionally invested, in order to see a future together there has to be a sense that you both really wish you could be together and are figuring out how to eventually make that happen. It’s essential to feel like the commitment to making the relationship work is mutual and that you both want the same things. If you don’t really have a sense that your need to be together is reciprocated, then you find yourself alone in wanting more and that leads to hurt feelings and makes it hard to build trust in the relationship. Without open communication to talk about those feelings, resentment builds and that actively blocks the closeness and connection you long to have in this relationship. My suggestion is for you to have an open and honest conversation with your partner. If you do want more out of this relationship, then I think you’ll have to risk putting yourself out there and letting the one you love know how you feel. It’s not easy to put yourself in a vulnerable position; it takes a lot of courage to do that. But being honest about what we feel and need is the only way to send a clear message to our partner. We can’t expect our loved one to read our minds, and then resent them for not doing something that we have never actually asked them to do. In order to build a strong connection based on trust, you need to feel safe and loved, and it’s hard to do that when you are walking around feeling hurt and resentful all the time. Hopefully your partner will be able to respond and give you the reassurance that you need. But if your needs and hurt feelings are ignored, then that’s important information for you to have as you make decisions about what you want and deserve in a relationship █ Jazmin Moral www.jazminmoral.com is a licensed clinical social worker practicing in Bethesda.
