REGGAE

REGGAE

By: Ellen Flores

When you combine reggae sounds with AfroCaribbean roots and percussion you get a magical blend of sounds, melodies and lyrics that are what I like to call “feel good music.” Next month, Washingtonians will get a chance to let their hair down and know what it means to feel “irie” with none other than reggae roots Latino icons Cultura Profética performing live at The Howard Theatre on Sunday, August 3. DC better be ready!

a song where they refer to them as “fogging your brain”. Making great rocksteady reggae with a message was the main goal for Antidoping at the time and remains the case today. Pedro and Manuel Apodaca consider the band to be a “collective” of musicians (14 or 15 of them!) whose goal is to make addictive, great sounding, reggae music. Many of them classically trained in music, their expertise elevates Antidoping to a level reserved for the greats.

Antidoping’s name was born from an inside joke. The sax player at the time made a comment to several band members who were habitually late for practice and/or showed up hung-over from the night before, “I’m going to have to make you take antidoping tests before practice.” Who knows if he ever did demand the tests, but the name stuck. It was perfect since the members of Antidoping are in fact against hard drugs and even wrote

I first fell in love with Antidoping when I heard a friend’s ringtone with the song “Juego a Muerte.” The lyrics said, “Brilla como la estrella que eres, y esparce tu luz, esparce tu luz.” I immediately looked up the song and that was all she wrote. The song that many would consider four songs in one, is perfection. In “Juego a Muerte” Antidoping invite a fan to come closer and meet the band to listen to the sax, the bass, the keyboards, and as they draw the audience in with their “reggae rhythms” they start to describe a routine day on the “pecera” (that’s a small bus for those not familiar with the lingo), in which the singer is heading to band practice. As he’s telling the story he’s distracted by some beautiful girls on the bus and he starts to describe how he would like to seduce them, then seamlessly

he’s singing about feeling like you’re high and flying, followed by a quick denouncement of hard drugs saying they cause your brain to fog, and the song ends with a plea to end unnecessary violence. The lyrics make the song great, but the music is a journey in and of itself. Another things that makes Antidoping great is they don’t pretend to be great. They write about what they know, they sing with their heart and soul, and they connect with the audience on a personal level that can’t be faked. Their song “A la Vuelta de la Esquina” is a perfect reggae about a woman washing clothes, and a boy going to school who then gets robbed by some kids who need the money to get high. The song is short on lyrics but intense on feeling as the sax penetrates your being and all you want to do is sway to the music. Antidoping tour tirelessly and are always at home when in front of an audience. This may be the reason that in a 20 year career, Antidoping has only released four full-length albums. So long as their fans get to see them playing for many years to come, all is well. Experience the magic that is Antidoping this July 14th at Tropicalia. Local Latin rock group, Anexo Social will be in charge of opening. For tickets and information visit, www. tickeri.com! █

I couldn’t talk about feel good music or reggae roots Latino without highlighting some of Cultura Profética’s catalogue. Ever since I first heard the song “Fruto De La Tierra” off the album Canción de Alerta back in 1998, Cultura quickly would become one of the foundations in my musical style preferences. They always managed to put so many feelings and thoughts I never knew how to express into a song or a melody that could capture it all in such a beautiful way. Off their most recent studio album La Dulzura the song “La Complicidad”, “Baja la Tensión” and “En La Ozcuridad” are songs you need to know for this show. I consider their album La Dulzura an almost flawless album as the tracks have a natural and seamless progression that gives the listener a true, musical journey. It’s no surprise that this is an album that has gained massive success from critics and fans throughout Latin America. Celebrating their career of over 15 years Cultura Profética has bookmarked a spot in the music scene on a global scale. From their debut album Canción de Alerta, to their most recent DVD recorded at the Luna Park stadium in Argentina celebrating these fifteen years of music, Cultura Profética has developed their sound and presented themselves at some of the biggest festivals in the globe, all while keeping in touch with their roots. Now, Cultura is taking on an extensive US tour that will bring them to many US cities for the first time, Washington DC among them. The magic of Cultura Profética is the perfect soundtrack to your emotions and summer vibes. So DC, get ready to get lost in the music and fill your soul with reggae Latino directly from La Isla del Encanto Puerto Rico with Cultura Profética at The Howard Theatre on August 3. Tickets will sell out so go get yours at www. ticketmaster.com. I hope to see you there para ‘bajar la tension’! █

direct and cutting without being preachy or dogmatic; nor do they drip with overly idealistic nonsense. Her uncompromised feminism and clarity of political and social issues is inspiring; especially within the context of a patriarchal culture and music industry. “Florecita Rockera” is also a classic for all of us rockeras, and showcased the power of Echeverri’s voice, and that she could shred just as much on her signature colorful acoustic guitar as an electric one. Since Aterciopelados, Echeverri proved that she could stand strongly on her own; thus is no surprise that she has met great success in her solo career. Even before getting into Spanish rock, I always loved rockeras and female-fronted rock/punk/alternative bands, so it was kind of a no-brainer that I fell in love with Aterciopelados after the first listen. One of my favorites is “Baracunatana,” a rip on a classic vallenato in which Echeverri sings in a mocking tone, poking fun at the machista lyrics. I love this song and Echeverri in general because of her openness and frankness. Her lyrics are

After the birth of her daughter Milagros, Echeverri took a brief hiatus from Aterciopelados and eventually released her first self-titled solo album in 2005. Since then, her daughter has been a main source of her inspiration as a solo artist. Motherhood has not “softened” Echeverri; rather it has shown us more mellow side to her in terms of her lyrics and musical composition. Her voice is as powerful as ever, backed with acoustic sounds. In the melodic track “Amniotico” Echeverri sings

about the miracle of creating another life. In contrast, on the track “Lactochampeta” Echeverri satirizes the overly sexualized lyrics about lactation from a classic Colombian champeta. Echeverri’s solo work also showcases her environmental activism, especially on tracks like “Madre Naturaleza” from her second album, Dos, where she sings, “Sin ti no puedo respirar/ Eres mi vida/Eres mi hogar.” This song is reminiscent of one of my favorite Aterciopelados albums, Rio, in which the band took a hard stance on the environment. This album coincided with a proposed constitutional referendum declaring that water is a fundamental right for all Colombians and should be maintained and preserved. This simply proves that even as a solo artist, Echeverri sticks to her guns and is driven by her principles as an artist. In the track “Yo,” Echeverri sings that she doesn’t want to be Juanes, Shakira, or even Gandhi; as if to say she has opted out of mega-stardom or fame in favor of just being herself. Echeverri’s most recent solo album, Ruiseñora¸is one of her most risky albums to date and is

quite different from her past releases. It is very low key, stripped down to acoustic instruments and the bare necessities; and in some ways is very reminiscent to classic protests songs by Mercedes Sosa or Violeta Parra. “Different from my past work, Ruiseñora, is more mine, more crafty. It sounds like me,” commented Echeverri. She also had a hand in the production process with Ruiseñora, identifying that she’s interested in more than just writing and singing. With Ruiseñora, Echeverri has opened up a new musical path and a facet of her identity, and I can’t wait to see where she will go on her own, as well as with Aterciopelados in future albums. As if this summer’s concert lineup wasn’t exciting enough, Andrea Echeverri will be performing at Kesta Rocks Fest II along with Vilma Palma E Vampiros, as well as, a Tribute Band for los Fabulosos Cadillacs on July 10 at Echostage. This will be one of the biggest rock concerts this summer, so don’t miss out! Tickets and more information can be found at www.tickeri.com. █

the great Mystic Love. Inextricably linked in sound, theme, and feeling, “Pupilas Lejanas” is as great in its own way as what the band achieved with “Sin Cadenas”. Where “Sin Cadenas” is tough and defiant, “Pupilas Lejanas” wades into the endurance of the suffering human spirit and rejoices. What better way to capture the essence of a group of musicians that consistently brought meaningful, memorable tracks to so many people, than to take a trip through Los Pericos’ catalogue and pin down exactly what made these songs so special? These cuts are essential— Some of them are downright beautiful. Some of them are danceable. Most of them are both. That’s Los Pericos for you.

•“Nada Que Perder” (El Ritual De La Banana, 1988): Possibly Los Pericos’ most memorable cut off of their breakthrough smash record El Ritual De La Banana. This is a weed anthem unlike any other, combining pathos and romanticism with stoner oblivion— “Let me go I’m so tired/ Give me my part/ Because she loves my eyes/ She’s going away…” •“Sin Cadenas” (Mystic Love, 1998): An absolute classic. Perfectly complimented by the Mariano Mucci directed music video depicting a boxer’s existential struggle. “Sin Cadenas” is a signature combination of Pericos groove and triumph in the face of underdog weariness. •“Pupilas Lejanas” (Mystic Love, 1998): The spiritual coda to “Sin Cadenas” from

•“Donde Van Las Almas” (Mystic Love, 1998): A somewhat deep cut from Mystic Love. Lyrically complex, sonically varied— Los Pericos’ sound takes a turn towards Latin rock and away from reggae. Thematically, “Donde Van Las Almas” is as serious as anything the band’s ever done. •“Complicado Y Aturdido” (Desde Cero, 2002): A great cover of Brazilian punk band Raimundos’ “Mulher de Fases”. Converting this romantic punk anthem into a Pericos’ reggae classic seemed almost too organic. Also, “Complicado” is an advance musically into a style that’s reggae dependent but uniquely Pericos.

example that within the reggae realm, the band can do it all.

•“Boulevard” ( Yerba Buena, 1996): Brilliant simply for the way the vocals interact with the musical arrangements on this track. An unbelievable funk-reggae pleasure that would surely spark the imaginations of the band’s successors (Los Amigos Invisibles, et. al).

•“Waitin’” (Big Yuyo, 1992): For my money Los Pericos’ were at their best when their Romanticism was at the forefront of their work. Breaking from the politically heavy dread of straight reggae distinguished Los Pericos and influenced their followers. Drawing from the underdog-outlaw heritage of reggae, Bahiano’s voice and lyrics forged a uniquely Latino character.

Don’t miss Los Pericos as they return to Washington DC in July. They were a full party during KestaWeen last year and are sure to keep us dancing all night again this summer.

•“Parate Y Mira” (Pampas Reggae, 1994): A crowd-pleasing favorite in the Pericos pantheon. The song shows off incredible vocal versatility with a El General-like ragamuffin turn. Musically,

Los Pericos at the Howard Theatre. Tuesday, July, 15, 2014. Doors open at 7PM, showtime at 9PM. Tickets are $30 in advance, $40 day of show. Tickets are available through ticketmaster.com. █

•“Parate Y Mira” is electric, raucous, and joyous.

•“Me Late” (Big Yuyo, 1992): This is Los Pericos’ take on reggae Panameño from the beloved Big Yuyo. It’s nothing fancy, but it is classic Pericos. Once again, another

Awards in 2011. Since then he has been able to hold his own in the industry. He has also dabbled in pop and other genres broadening his appeal. Also in 2011, he received three awards at the Billboard Latin Music Awards, which included Tropical Album of the Year. Fans were hot for Prince Royce in more ways than one, that same year Prince Royce was nominated as one of the 50 Most Beautiful for the magazine People en Español. In April of 2012, Royce released his second studio album “Phase II”. It was for Royce – Prince Royce – that I had driven all the way from Northern Virginia to see him live. Onlookers were taken in by his charming personality, innocent smile, soothing voice and eyes that would make any heart flutter. I have lovingly tagged him “El Principe Azul de la Bachata”. This artist with Dominican roots made his mark when he released a bilingual bachata version of Ben E. King’s 1961 song “Stand By Me” on his self-titled first album, a song which he performed at the Premio Lo Nuestro

This singer-songwriter also known as Geoffrey Royce Rojas has made appearances on Univision’s “Sabado Gigante” hosted by Don Francisco in addition to taking on a role as a coach on Telemundo’s “La Voz Kids”, a program similar to “American Idol” where talented amateur singers get their shot at fame. His track “Corazon Sin Cara” hit home for many and serves as a reminder not to judge a book by its cover when choosing a mate. “El Verdadero Amor Perdona” on which he collaborated with legendary Mexican band Maná gave his music a new level of legitimacy among fans and non-fans alike. He was also vetted with

the collaboration “Ven Conmigo” recorded with Daddy Yankee that was released on the reggaetonero’s album “Prestige”. Among popular Royce tunes are “Incondicional”, “Las Cosas Pequeñas” and “El Amor Que Perdimos”. In April of this year he landed “Hot Latin Songs Artist of the Year, Male” and “Streaming Song of the Year” for “Darte Un Beso” at the Billboard Latin Music Awards. He performed “Darte Un Beso” in Portuguese with Michel Telo a Brazilian pop icon. One might find it difficult not to identify a song that he has recorded since he stamps nearly each one with the calling out of his name “Royce”. With his rising celebrity status he was invited to perform at the White House for Hispanic Heritage Month with artists such as Romeo Santos and has even signed a deal with Pepsi. With so many successes in so little time one can only wonder what’s up next for Prince Royce? His latest work “Soy El Mismo” released in October 2013 was highly anticipated by fans the world over and a tour of the same name kicks off its North American trek on July 31st where

admirers in 20 cities will be swooned by his lyrics. “I’m excited to be touring the U.S. and Canada once again so that I can present my brand new ‘Soy El Mismo Tour’ to them. I am looking forward to sharing it with all those North American fans that have been there from the very beginning,” the singer related. Set to open the tour is Mexican singer songwriter, Sofia Reyes, who Prince Royce recently signed to his very own and newly created label, D’León Records. “I’m excited to be launching D’León Records to support other young talent in their development,” Royce said in a statement. “I have been very fortunate to have been able to break through and succeed in this tough industry, and this is one of my ways of giving back.” Experience the enchantment of Prince Royce at Wolf Trap in Vienna, VA on August 29, 2014. not always the case with many relationships. In addition, he also expressed his contentment at having received an award known as “Uno Más Uno” which is a people’s choice award in which one politician, one sports figure and one artist are selected to be the recipients. This was of particular importance to him since it came directly from the public. In the winter of 2001 on a U.S. tour he performed 77 concerts in 48 days! It must be this kind of work ethic that earned him 4 nominations for the Casandra Awards in 2012, the Dominican Republic’s most prestigious honor for artists and others influential This artist was born in Canca Arriba, Paraje del Municipio de Tamboril, Cibao in the Dominican Republic. The area where he grew up was fairly rural and his family enjoyed music as a pastime. It was with this musical backdrop that he moved to the capital, Santo Domingo, to launch his career. Initially he joined the National Conservatory and also participated in local music groups. His first recording “Me Liberé” earned him notoriety and praise. Family has played a great role in his life. During an interview with Alex Valdes on a night show similar to David Letterman called “Esta Noche Tú Night”, he jokingly emphasized that all four of his children have the same mother, which is

in society. He took home three for his bachata works, winning over other big names in the genre such as Romeo Santos, Frank Reyes Joe Veras, Kiko Rodriguez and Prince Royce. Some of the categories in which he was named are: Arranger of the Year, Bachata Song of the Year ( “Tú Y Nadie Más”), Bachata Singer of the Year and Album of the Year (“Tú Y Nadie Más”). The only category in which he wasn’t the victor was for Arranger of the Year. On that occasion he performed with Kiko Rodriguez & Joel Santos. As the cradle of “bachata” receiving these acknowledgements in the Dominican Republic speaks volumes on the quality of his music. He even earned the nickname “La Voz De La Ternura”. If his songs don’t get your hips swaying, whether you are an expert bachata dancer or not, I don’t know what will! Be serenaded by the vocal stylings of Zacarías Ferreira for two nights! First on Thursday, August 14th at Euphoria Night Club in Baltimore, MD and for a second night at Diamond Lounge in Annandale, VA on Friday, August 15th! in a modest home, has his own company, On Top of the World Music, and is able to lend a hand to others seeking to excel in the game. In 2009 “El Dueño del Sistema” was released under DJ Nelson’s Flow Music. In 2011, his álbum titled “Otro Nivel de Música” made its debut and was later nominated for a Latin Grammy Award for Best Urban Music Album. With that title he implicitly promised to take music to new heights with his skills and he seems to be doing just that. His growing fan base has come to love canciones such as “La Pregunta” and “Junto Al Amanecer”. In addition to receiving props by recording with Daddy Yankee on the song “El Amante” J Alvarez has been well-received among peers such as Arcángel, Nova y Jory, Cosculluela, JKing y Máximan and others. He collaborated with Arcángel on “Regalame Una Noche”, “Sola” with Farruko and Jenny La Sexy Voice, and “Sexo, Sudor y Calor” with Ñejo & Dalmata. Together with Daddy Yankee’s producers, Musicologo & Menes, “Imperio Nazza: J Alvarez Edition” was released in 2012. That album features “Se Acabó El Amor,” a track that anyone who’s ever been through a break-up can relate to. More J Alvarez songs that I can’t get enough of are “Actúa” and “El Duelo”. The artist from Río Piedras, Puerto Rico’s music is heavily influenced by rap and hip-hop. Growing up he listened to A Tribe called Quest, Busta Rhymes, Q-Tip and was also inspired by Tego Calderón. His first performance took place in school at Escuela Luis Muñoz Marín when he was only 12. Through a cousin he came to meet DJ Nelson a noted reggaetón producer who helped to groom his career in the industry. Fast forward to now and this youthful heavy hitter, who was born on December 13, 1983 to Dominican parents

J Alvarez became the proud father of twins, Kasniel y Alexander, in 2013. He is currently on tour promoting his latest studio album “De Camino Pa’ La Cima” and he certainly has come a long way on his journey to reach the top. As an integral part of the genre’s generation next, he’s very engaged in social media. Subscribe to his Facebook page and take a self-guided tour to various destinations. As of the week of this article he was in Chicago for the 2014 Premios Juventud VIP Tour sponsored by Dr. Pepper, then in Minnesota and Connecticut and posted tickets to his upcoming show in Puerto Rico. He has even participated in the infamous “Throwback Thursdays” by putting up a pic posing with Marlon Wayans in the Dominican Republic. You can also peruse his album of photos taken with and by fans. J Alvarez has been booked to perform at some of the most reputable venues in the U.S. including Madison Square Garden in New York and House of Blues. rooted into who we are, what we love and what makes us well, us. Now you may be wondering what all of this has to do with an entertainment magazine, fret not, now it will all make sense. In an island 100 miles long by 35 miles wide, its astounding the caliber of talent that has been birthed here. There are so many things that can be said of Marc Anthony. From a professional perspective, Marc has evolved his sound throughout the years with projects that span from classic to modern salsa songs that have become this generation’s pulse on the dance floor. With over 12 million albums sold worldwide, it’s really no surprise why he is this generation’s salsa icon and ambassador to Latin Music and Latin culture. Marco Antonio Muñiz, a child of the 70s and 80s East Harlem scene in New York, learned life lessons that have molded him into the strong, secure and confident man that we see today. As a kid, Marc was super skinny. Back in the day, if you were skinny and male it was a sign of weakness. Marc’s dad, a former amateur bodybuilder got him into shape, to the point of being able to do over 100 pushups in one day at the young age of

9. Funny that at his 45 years, Marc is on the cover of Men’s Fitness giving advice about being fit, something he never thought he would do. Through the exercises his dad taught him, Marc learned confidence and received the best advice of his life from his dad. ‘Son, I’m ugly and you’re ugly—work on your personality’ and so Marc did and boy has it paid off! We all have our favorite highlights from Marc’s decade spanning career. From his initial phase and classics like “Ahora Quién” to his masterful renditions of Hector Lavoe’s music in the film “El Cantante”, today we embrace Marc’s most recent studio album “Marc Anthony 3.0” album which has been the first one released with new studio material in over 10 years. Marc’s comeback didn’t go unnoticed. What has now become an anthem, the infectious and heart swelling track “Vivir Mi Vida” spent a record 17 weeks in the number 1 spot on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs, a record for 2014. It’s no surprise the Marc was one of the big winners in the 2014 Billboard Music Awards, beating out Romeo Santos by winning in the categories of Best Latin Album and Best Latin Song. This win

proved that people want good music and want to connect with the Salsa genre; the genre that makes Marc Anthony most comfortable performing on stage. It is almost hard to believe that when Marc began his career, he hated being on stage. Thankfully, his manager had an illuminating prediction. He told Marc “The day you feel comfortable on stage, nobody can stop you” thankfully for us, Marc kept performing and found his place in singing Salsa music. This fall, Puerto Ricans and Latinos in the DMV will be present with flag in hand to see this icon live and in full splendor. Be prepared when Marc sings “Preciosa” the unofficial anthem of Puerto Rico, because no matter which country you are from, this song will make your soul feel full and your heart swell with patriotic pride in a way that only Marc Anthony can do. ¡Que viva la salsa! “Como fui a enamorarme de ti”, and their biggest hit, “Tu carcel”. At the time, they were considered the best “romantic group” of Latin America. After 20 years performing with Los Bukis, Solís decided to embark on a soloist career, his loyal fans supporting him every step of the way. Solís triumphed as a soloist and reached at least 24 Top 10 singles on Billboard’s Hot Latin Tracks chart, including 10 No. 1 hits. Some of his most memorable hits include songs such as “Si no te hubieras ido”, “Si Te Pudiera Mentir”, “O Me Voy o Te Vas”, “Más que tu amigo”, and “Ojalá”.

Well-known for his powerful and emotional romantic ballads, his songs tell stories of passion, hope, pain, heartache, and above all, love. His tremendous and incredible voice conveys these themes so well, that you can actually feel the emotion in his songs. His love songs can be mood altering. With their melancholic melody, they transport you into a place of reflection, one in which you can feel the emotion in every note, every word of the song. Solís is a multi-talented versatile artist who is not limited by musical genres. Aside from romantic ballads, Solís also has written many cumbias and rancheras, as well as, boleros, salsas, bachatas, merengues, duranguenses, and has even experimented with reggaeton. His musical talent extends to all genres, making him a true inspiration in the music world. A native of Michoacán, Mexico, Solís is the fifth of seven brothers. He began performing when he was just six years old. At age twelve, he formed his first music group, Los Hermanos Solís, alongside his brothers. In the early 70s, at age 18, Solís formed “Los Bukis” the youngsters, and was lead singer and songwriter for the group. Los Bukis gained tremendous popularity throughout Mexico, Central America, and the United States with songs such as “Falso Amor”,

Solís has collaborated with various wellknown Latin artists such as Olga Tañón, Ana Bárbara, Anaís, Grupo Mojado, Enrique Iglesias, and Alejandro Fernandez, among others. His songs have been featured as theme songs in various popular Mexican telenovelas and have been covered my hundreds of artists. Solís is a living music legend, not just in Mexico but also internationally. In 2010 his success was literally cemented in history, when he was finally presented with his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2012 Solís debuted as a vocal coach and judge on La Voz México, Mexico’s version of the voice, winning the competition in the third season. Solís most recent album, Gracías por Estar Aqui, was released on October 22, 2013, and debuted at #1 in Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart. The album includes songs such as “Tres Semanas”, “De Mil Amores” and the album title track, “Gracías Por Estar Aquí”. Solís currently on his Gracias por Estar Aqui 2013 World Tour and is scheduled to perform at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, VA on August 31st, 2014. plates. The new sushi line is delivered to us by the gifted hands of the restaurant’s new Executive Chef, Felipe Milanes, a native of Panama City, Panama. Milanes’ new sushi line includes rolls such as the Spicy Tuna Bakuchiku Roll, Rainbow Tropico Roll, Seared Salmon Roll, Scorpion Roll, and the Golden Eel Roll. To accompany the sushi, I opted for a refreshing glass of Amada Sur Torrentes, a refreshing white wine from Mendoza, Argentina, with a touch floral-citrus taste. I also nibbled on a bowl of the Spicy Tuna Nachos, a unique dish made with crunchy won tons, and topped with cotija cheese and salsa picante. Its elegant décor with a 65-foot bar, and large floor to ceiling windows incorporate accents from both Latin and Asian cultures. It also has a large rooftop bar and lounge, making it an ideal spot for dinner or drinks on a summer night. What brought me to Masa 14 this time was a new line of sushi, as well as, some additions to their already staple small

While I generally enjoyed every item I tried, there were a few rolls that really stood out. The Rainbow Tropico Roll was my favorite. The Rainbow roll in general has always been my favorite sushi roll, however, Masa 14’s own creative interpretation of it blew my previous perception of the rainbow roll out of the water. With a delicious variety of fresh and colorful tuna, salmon, hamachi, avocado, the roll is also and topped with a sweet

cool and refreshing mango-papaya salsa, which adds the perfect touch. Also tied for my favorite was the Golden Eel Roll with tamago, avocado, cucumber and a maple- miso sauce. Although quite different, this crunchy and sweet roll was just as heavenly as the Rainbow Tropico Roll. Made with fresh ingredients, the maple-miso sauce gave it a unique flavor, and different from any sushi I have tried, setting it aside from all the rest. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Scorpion Roll, made with prawn tempura, avocado, sesame-chipotle mayo, eel sauce and tobiko. The tempura added a just the right touch of crunchy yumminess. Moving on from the sushi and on the small plates, my favorite dish was definitely the Compressed Watermelon Salad, with sesame dressing, sambal sour cream, cotija cheese, pickled jicama and jumbo seared scallops. The mouthwatering plump and juicy scallops, with a slightly crispy outside were nothing short of amazing. Lying on a bed of fresh watermelon chunks, this dish was a real treat.

Just when I thought I was full and could not possibly eat another bite, dessert arrived. The first desert I tried was the Toasted Almond Flan, a Latin-style custard, basil-raspberry foam, vanilla tuile. It was rich and creamy, topped with almond slices and a long flat crunchy vanilla cookie for that extra crunch. I easily could have eaten the whole thing by myself. Just as amazing was the Chocolate Terrine Masa 14 a three-layered chocolate brownie cake with dark, milk, and white chocolate, black plum sauce. These three layers of deliciousness are sure to satisfy any chocolate craving. If you have not tried Masa 14’s new menu items, it’s definitely worth the trip. / JULY 2014

Welcome to July. We are half way through the year (and half way through the World Cup). Prepare yourselves to switch gears from kick-off to liftoff because summer travel season is in full swing. Some of you may have every detail of your vacation planned out already and are just counting down the days until freedom. The best approach to packing for a trip is to stay organized. Purchase a convenient “what to pack” memo pad like the one pictured here, or look one up online and print it out for free! There are also sites such as The Universal Packing List (upl. codeq.info/) where you can enter your destination and travel dates and the website generates suggestions for what to bring and what needs to get done before your departure. Depending on where you are traveling, you may be moving from summer to winter, albeit a milder winter I’m sure. A spring jacket is a great accessory to throw over a sleeveless dress for cooler nights or rainy days that bring along lower temperatures. Another great item to have on hand when exploring a city is a reusable pocket poncho like the one pictured here which cinches in at the waist and comes in red polka dot or houndstooth. A much more attractive option to disposable ponchos, and a much smaller item to pack versus a raincoat which you may or may not end up needing.

If you plan on using this time to catch up on some work you will want a stylish travel tote to carry around your laptop and other devices. The Apple Store has a chic Michael Kors Laptop Travel Tote available in two sizes and six colors. Whether you’re an overpacker or plan on bringing back gifts and souvenirs for friends and family the last thing you need is your luggage case weighing you down any further. Therefore, opt for hardshell luggage made of super-light, high-performance polycarbonate for ultimate security and minimal weight. Designer Jonathan Adler has paired with Tumi, a leading brand of luxury travel and lifestyle accessories, to produce a fun, eye-catching collection of luggage made of this material. Before you leave, definitely visit www.travelchannel.com. Simply type in your destination to get advice on food, safety, must see attractions, expected weather, and more. Happy travels!

entertainment where he interviews artists, shares recipes, community news, horoscopes, and entertainment with a focus on always educating, informing, and entertaining the reader. Joaquin takes this same approach to his live performance only it’s somewhat sexified for the adults. “Del Tingo al Tango Live” will be an unprecedented show focusing on transformation. In the show a common woman becomes a coveted “vedette” daring to explore modern burlesque cabaret through experiences, acting, music, dance and comedy,” states Joaquin. I asked Carlos what he’s been up to since his departure from Univision nearly 5 years ago, “Well I’ve been very busy traveling and starting my own production company and magazine titled ‘Del Tingo al Tango,” stated Joaquin, “It’s based on a catch-phrase that I always used when I was on TV which means you’re always moving around from one side to another, your life takes many turns, this is how my life is so it made sense to call my company that.” Joaquin has been interested in entertaining audiences since he was 6 or 7 years old growing up in Puerto Rico. He was a precocious kid who would sneak into his mother’s closet and play dress up, and mimic television stars while practicing in front of a mirror to get it just right. “My parents weren’t very supportive back then, they thought it wasn’t something a ‘boy’ should be doing, so although I loved performing and entertaining I left that to the wayside to go to school and pursue journalism,” remembers Joaquin. Joaquin now admits that getting an education has helped his career advance to where he is today, “I’m very grateful to my parents for pushing me because I’ve been able to pursue my dreams now being on TV and now publishing my monthly ‘Del Tingo al Tango Magazine’ and developed into this amazing show,” shares Joaquin. In the Del Tingo al Tango magazine, Joaquin publishes clean and healthy

“It’s a performance that is long overdue and holds a special meaning for me because my father will be joining me on stage,” shares Joaquin. “Growing up my dad wasn’t supportive of my sexual orientation at all. I had almost given up hope that he would come around when I decided to put together a while back where I shared the experience of a boy coming out to his parents. This performance changed everything because my father finally came around and accepted me for who I am. We’ve come full circle and now he is actually living his lifelong dream which is to sing himself! I’m happy that he’s able to join me on stage for my own show.’” Once a victim of bullying, Joaquin is an advocate for LGBT rights, and promotes awareness of many social issues during his performances. “I like to address social issues that affect the community but I like to focus on being entertaining, and presenting the information so that people can reach their own conclusions,” shares Joaquin. When I asked Carlos how he would describe his stage show he stated, “Del Tingo al Tango Vive is a spectacle of lipstick, wigs, and high heels where what you don’t see you don’t ask. It’s full of surprises, I’ll be bringing lots of dancers from Puerto Rico, singers, and more. It’s going to be a great time!” Make sure you go to this fun burlesque variety show featuring local celebrity Carlos Joaquin on Wednesday, August 6th at the Gala Hispanic Theater! Tickets are $25, and the show is at 8pm. For more information and tickets visit, www.carlosjoaquin.net or call (202) 351-1722. █

had great chemistry and shared similar aesthetic preferences. Alvaro had the idea to make a handbag brand that embraced America’s tote craze. Together, we began developing the concept and gradually designed the products you see in our collection today.

The line, officially launched in May, has already been spotted on celebrities like Whitney Port. Influenced by their Venezuelan roots and international style, Alvaro Roche and Elsa Arcila joined forces to design a line that is chic, practical and fit for today’s modern woman. Alvaro, a veteran to the design industry co-founded EPK, a successful childrenswear line in Latin America. He has also worked with the internationally known Gianfranco Ferré fashion house in Italy. Elsa, alumna of LA’s Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising, manages their business operations and marketing. Kesta: What influenced the birth of aroche Georgetown? Elsa: We met at a time when we were both yearning to start a new fashion project. After meeting in 2012, we realized we

KH: Most outsiders don’t consider DC to be a fashionable city. Why start a fashion line in Washington DC? E: We wanted to change the reputation that Washingtonians are unfashionable. After all, DC is the capital of the free world! A lot of things happen here. We figured that designing a brand Washingtonians could relate to would be a great idea. Our hope is that DC embraces our vision of what we see as the “DC aesthetic”—modern, functional, and elegantly sexy with an undertone of humor that comes from being confident. KH: There are both pros and cons to opening an online store. With the ongoing online clutter and chatter, what challenges have you faced in marketing your brand? E: We knew it would be challenging to get our brand noticed, so we focused on developing a marketing strategy that would help distinguish us from our competitors. The key is highlighting the thing that

makes your brand special. It is also important to understand the fundamentals of online marketing and how to identify the most effective strategy for your brand. KH: What makes your foldable tote bags unique and different from your competitors? E: Besides our #makeitpersonal feature, we think the proportions of our bags are what make them most unique. We focused our attention on making sure their proportions were perfect. We wanted bags big enough for a woman to carry everything she needs and correctly sized to complement all body types. As a Latina woman, I’m not very tall. Before aroche, I rarely carried totes since most of them came to my knees! KH: How did the #makeitpersonal campaign start? E: Alvaro was interested in customizing and personalizing bags. We noticed that many women in DC were carrying the same bag, but in different colors. We thought it would be fun to give our customers the chance to create a bag with their own personal twist. On aroche.us, we offer endless combinations of colors and stripes, as well as our stitched varsity-style lettering.

KH: Both of you have ties to Venezuela, how has that influenced your brand and designs? E: One of aroche’s influences is the casual yet elegant style of Latin women. KH: Other than Carolina Herrera, is their another Venezuelan designer or Latin designer that has grabbed your attention? E: We love Venezuelan fashion designer Angel Sanchez. We also can’t wait to see what Esteban Cortazar of Colombia is going to do next. KH: If you could offer a piece of advice for aspiring designers and online shop owners what would it be? E: Have multiple distribution channels. This allows for increased interaction with customers. KH: When in the mood for Latin food or music, where do you go in DC? E: For dancing, we go to El Centro DF in Georgetown. For live salsa music, we both enjoy Rumba Café. For Venezuelan food, we love La Caraqueña. El Chilango is also delicious. They have the best tacos! Visit their online store at aroche.us/. █

LOVE

By: Rosario Garcia

The Mexican Madonna made her debut appearance in Washington, DC on May 30th at Echostage, and the results were “De Pelicula!” Promoting her “De Pelicula” tour, Gloria Trevi came prepared to show us her inner diva was alive and well and looking better than ever. The energy for this show was electric as local DJ collective, Maracuyeah, opened the night playing 90s electronica hits like Magneto’s “Vuela Vuela” mixed with Tigres del Norte and Latin pop rock. Fans of all ages, sexual orientations, and genders, came together to dance along with la Trevi. The show started off spectacularly as Trevi came on stage cloaked by dozens of fog machines and surrounded by a troupe of the sexiest dancers known to man. Trevi changed outfits nearly after every song and performed some acrobatics (like being thrown up in the air, doing the splits, and generally throwing herself around the stage) that had fans wondering if she was 22 instead of 46. Gloria performed her hits “Zapatos Viejos”, “Con Los Ojos Cerrados”, and closed the show with the 90’s anthem, “Pelo Suelto”. It’s clear from her performance that Trevi continues to live by that mantra, she’s going to wear her hair loose and always be who she is until the day she dies. After we left the Trevi concert we felt the same way! The afterparty in which several Latina Drag Queens who attended the show performed was the perfect close to a great night! De pelicula! █

Thousands of “Romeistas” streamed into the GMU Patriot Center Wednesday night ( June 11) to see the King of Bachata himself, Romeo Santos, who delivered a tremendous 2 hour performance that still has my ears ringing from all the swooning and screaming fans from all walks of life who attended the show. Other than being quite easy on the eyes (come on, I had to say it!), I have a lot of respect for Santos’ songwriting and composition skills, and the fact that he breaks all the “rules” of bachata breathing innovative, creative life into the genre. The stage was adorned with props fit for the King of Bachata, including a microphone stand with a crown and statues of knights in shining armor. Wardrobe changes, lights and graphics on large screens complemented the castle motif, as Santos sang hits like “La Diabla,” Soberbio” and “Odio” from both solo albums Formula Vol. 1 & 2. This might have seemed over the top for any other artist, but when you’re Romeo Santos? Go big or go home! Santos paid homage to his beginnings by featuring a “potpourri” of Aventura’s classics. It was particularly entertaining to watch Santos call men from the audience up to the stage to finish parts of his songs, and performed “Ella y Yo” with the fan who won the lyric challenge. A couple of lucky ladies also got serenaded and kissed by Santos on stage to “Solo Por un Beso” and “Propuesta Indecente.” My only regret that night? Not seducing Romeo and running away together, but there is always the Vol. 3 World tour! █

My fiancé and I used to have sex every day but now it’s like twice a month. I’ve been slacking because I’m so tired from my two jobs. And I know he’s been stressed about work and other stuff lately so he hasn’t been in the mood either. I want to try new things to try to spice up our love life, like role playing, but he’s not a fan. Sometimes I think maybe he doesn’t find me as attractive since I’ve gained weight but he hasn’t said anything about that and says I look great. How can we get back to the way things were in the beginning of our relationship?

-Preocupada in the DMV

Dear Preocupada:

I understand that when it feels like the passion isn’t there the way it used to be, it can be tempting to start questioning your attractiveness, or look for new tricks to entice your partner in the bedroom. But the truth is that as we connect emotionally, so we connect sexually. When a couple feels emotionally connected and their bond is secure, that leads to better communication and focused attention on each other, which in turn leads to greater arousal, pleasure and satisfaction. Feeling safe and protected in a relationship gives partners the ability to express their needs and preferences, and the freedom to explore and be sexually adventurous. It makes sense that if you trust that your partner is there for you, then you can relax and let go without fear or embarrassment, so sex can become more passionate and joyful. Passion can absolutely be sustained over the years. As a species we are wired for monogamy (I know, people are often shocked to hear this!). The latest research shows that we are wired to prefer mating and bonding with one partner for the long term. Evolution has given us oxytocin- the “cuddle hormone”- which gets released during orgasm to ensure that adult lovers find their sexual interactions infinitely and continually rewarding (so much for the myth that it’s not natural for men to be monogamous because they are programmed to spread their genes around). The sexual excitement in a long-term relationship is not the same intense lust that takes over when you first meet someone, but it’s a deeper exhilaration that develops from knowing someone intimately and profoundly. Secure lovers have the capacity to remain playful and adventurous throughout the relationship. But if the bond is not secure, or we are trying to have “avoidant” sex, sealed-off from emotion, then more novelty is necessary because sensation and performance alone become the focus of intercourse. Under those circumstances it makes sense that familiarity with a lover becomes the death of exciting sex. But it doesn’t have to be that way! The key is to connect emotionally and to make sure that you create a secure bond with your partner. Emotional openness and the ability to express love go hand in hand with physical pleasure in bed. So the intensity and satisfaction in the bedroom is usually a good barometer for how things are going in other aspects of your relationship. Are you feeling emotionally connected? Do you feel safe, is there total trust and space for both of you to share your feelings and vulnerabilities or fears with each other? Before looking up more ways to spice things up, I would suggest going back to basics and focusing on the attachment between you and your partner, and finding ways to strengthen your emotional bond. Secure love, not novelty, is what leads to the best sex. █ Jazmin Moral www.jazminmoral.com is a licensed clinical social worker practicing in Rockville.
