PROJECTS

IMM COLOGNE Design Brief:- I have to design Pavillion for TH-OWL to represent in IMM Cologne The international furniture and interiors fair. The design should show the capabilities in the areas of architecture and interior design and the students produced by the university.

Year : 2019 Project Duration : 6 Months Guide : Frank Nickler The project objective for IMM Cologne was to achieve a holistic vision of the Pavillion explaining the university. Also, have to catch the essence of the kind of work done in the university. Proposed Design

In the north of Germany, we have an international expo of architecture and interior design and designers known as IMM Cologne. As a renowned institute in NRW TH-OWL, we have got a chance to represent our home university on this international platform for which we have to design pavilion representing the interior and architecture department of our university. The inspiration for the TH-OWL pavilion was basically to represent the inter-link between interior and architecture. And to have a central piece of attraction for interactive play. TH-OWL Pavillion at IMM in year 2018

The Object

INSPIRATION

The central piece of attraction will be made out of deformed cube i.e. the cube can be sculpted removing some parts and creating the sitting furniture out of it. Also, the object is set in a repetitional circular motion to create interesting play for interaction for the viewers at the pavilion.

Material Board The inspiration consist of interior design and exterior design (Architecture)creating of well civilized and organised space.

Sitting Furniture The central piece of attraction for Th-OWL pavilion is a geometric cubic form with sitting pieces embedded in it. And a secret information behind every piece of furniture.

The proposed Idea has an amalgamation of both interior and exterior in a single cubical from which you can pull out your furniture. The back walls depict a 2D representation of the college buildings and the strings coming from the top depicts that the form is derived from space and not abruptly appearing out of no-where creating a seamless design miracle.

PURAN YANTRA Design Brief:- How might we help people to make puran poli and other Maharashtrian dishes easly? The puran yantra is one of the important product in Maharashtrian context because the holy dish puran poli is made only on special occasions. The product basically helps in coarse grinding of the ingredients. The stuffing is made up by grinding in this product. Cost of the product is around Rs.500.

PROCESS OF MAKING PURAN POLI

Year : 2017 Project Duration : 6 Weeks Guide : Ra jiv Jassal, Pritam Paryae The objective of this project is to provide the ease and comfort to user while cooking and also aesthetics and multifunctionality of the project. New Design

Problems to solve

• Cleaning and re assembling • Slipping • Movement of wrist • Blockage • Gripping • No specific collector

Product U.S.P

• Easy cleaning and re assembling • Anti-slipping silicon grip • Easy movement of wrist • With collecting vessel • Manual yet easy to use

IDEATION The other concept was about the kind of manual mixer which can coarse grind ingredients required in cooking. It was inspired from okhli . Where there are multiple blades for easy and fast process.

The hand postures and grip in my product is most important thing of the product which makes human efforts less. And gives certain comfort to use the product. Due to ergonomics the life of the product in the market remains for many years just due to small changes in the design.

Final Form

The blades are important part of the design, complete process is dependent on the design of blades. The new blades are using the negative space of each other leaving very less margin only for the course particles to pass through. The blades are in two triangles one straight and other inverted. The ends of the blades are curved inside to for the controlled flow of particles for grinding them coarsely. The two blades works in cycle i.e. when one blade is moving forward other is moving backward, this opposite movement of blades helps in coarse grinding.

The design can be further improved.

FACADE DESIGN

Year : 2019 Project Duration : 4 week Client: Karl-Hans Schlossstein Service: Facade Design

Design Brief:- Create a unique Idea for the renovation of an old german facade to a very new and evergreen modern chic design example, which connects the human race with nature seamlessly and captures the natural beauty from surroundings. Site Photos

The client demanded a modern idea of facade design to their old house which is designed in german style. With new construction of winter garden and extra garage space for two vehicles, gym & a backyard farm where they can grow their vegetables. The selected colors for the renovated house works closely with the natural color palate in the surroundings. Also, the colors are derived from the greek and roman architecture to work well with the new look of the house making it modern chic.

Current Facade

Proposed Facade Design

GREEK VS ROMAN ARCHITECTURE The main examples of Greek architecture that survive today are the large temples that they built to their gods. The Greeks built most of their temples and government buildings in three types of styles :Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. These styles (also called "orders") were reflected in the type of columns they used. Roman architecture flourished in the Roman Republic and even more so under the Empire, when the great ma jority of surviving buildings were constructed. It used new materials, particularly concrete, and newer technologies such as the arch and the dome to make buildings that were typically strong and well-engineered.

About use of colours The selected colors for the renovated house works closely with the natural color palate in the surroundings. Also, the colors are derived from the greek and roman architecture to work well with the new look of the house making it modern chic.

The image on the left is the old facade for the indoor swimming pool which is now filled with concrete. The right image shows the new outlook of the old facade in new which accommodates winter garden and garage with two vehicles park area.

SHADES OF MOON Design Brief:- Design a Digital Aura for the moon globe. In a closed space ie. museum so that you capture the whole essence of the given exhibit (moon globe). The moon globe is a representation of the moon in a tangible form. So we as a group decided to find out the very basic interpretation of the moon and every one of us came up with their ideas of the moon. The very first conclusion as a group and according to research on the moon globe was the moon affects the earth in many different ways. For example the famous eclipses, blood moon and no moon appearance of it visible from earth. Then we started with another dimension of bringing the moon close to humans which is very famous in terms of love. After the discussions with team members and the faculties, we came down to the conclusion in terms of words like phases of the moon, blood moon, occurrence of geographical changes due to the moon and some myths on the moon.

Year : 2019 Project Duration : 1 Week Guide: Alicja & Clemens. Studio: Please Don’t Touch Project Type : Workshop Based Group: Ketan, Gabriela & Melike Anthony McCall’s solid-light installation

CONCEPT The final concept was inspired by Anthony McCall an artist who works with solid light installations. The idea was to make a room that has a graphical representation of the moon’s phases in 365 days, with audio at the specific phase of the moon how it affects the earth. So when you walk in a room full of darkness with your device and locate the specific positions it will start information with visuals on the floor. The visuals are projected by projectors and the whole room has a couple of proximity sensors and RFID tags which helps to create the whole experience. Also, we used smoke to create solid light structures in the room.

Proof of Concept Process

Process In workshop project we had very little time to make an actual outcome, but we made a POC which is very similar to the actual output. It was fun to work with people who do not know any English or other Indian languages which made it difficult at some points. Also, the faculties were helpful and involved in the whole process which made it more intresting.

Proposed Idea

PENTABLE (Bamboo table) Design Brief:- How might we help people to spend time in waiting areas thinking about design, so as to encourage design thinking in the most sustainable and echofriendly way. Bamboo as grass has extensive properties such as linear fiber grains & flexibility. Inspiration for this piece of furniture was exploring the most properties of bamboo in interesting yet simple form. I wanted to create a piece of furniture using very little material and maximum use of properties.

Year : 2018 Project Duration : 4 Weeks Guide : Susanth CS, Ra jiv Jassal & Amaltas Khan Project Type : Skill Based To cultivate properties in the form of furniture inspired me to create an accent table that starts a point of discussion between people and make them think about the furniture. New Design

'PENTABLE' is a piece of furniture which triggers your mind to think about the simplicity and elegance of design, also how five thin slivers manages to balance an 8mm thick glass slab.

Learnings: The whole course taught me the properties of bamboo & I tried to apply it in many ways, linear grain structure be the most explored. Also, I learned to bend and make things in many possible ways.

PROCESS While ideating on my brief of designing furniture I came up with the idea of an accent table, which is structured in such a way that it uses only 3/4th of a 3ft bamboo piece.

The piece of furniture is constructed in such a way that it has five legs of 1.25" width. The table is assembled using half-lap joint making a pentagon which is found to be the most stable structure in nature. The bamboo slivers are heat bent in 'c' shape using a fixed 'c' shaped jig The structure of the table stays due to interlocking between two bamboo slivers canceling out the force of contact.

Height of the table is 650mm & diameter of glass top is 450mm, thickness is 18mm and bevel of 25mm.

INCREDIBLE EXTENT Design Brief:- We have to create a room/ pathway in the area of 200 x 250 x 400mm showing the way in which light can be used in its best and innovative way to get a desired conceptual output. And also we can experiment with the walls, ceiling, and ground to get the desired outcome of our concept.

Year : 2019 Project Duration : 6 Months Guide: Mary-Anne Kyriakou & Peter Schuster Mc Escher Impossible painting

ABOUT DESIGN The Design for the LightBox is being tailored using threads of James Turrell’s concept of sky and land also, Mc Escher’s concept of new impossible is possible architecture. Their work has deeply impacted the design as you see it in the final output. The lightbox consists of bifurcated stairs and end/start of all the stairs their is a blue opening that acts like water and sky when seen from either side of the lightbox.

HERB GARDEN Design Brief:- design a herb garden that is ergonomically fit to use by a common person and economically affordable by anyone. Keeping in mind the herbs & shrubs which will be planted in it.

Proposed Idea

ABOUT DESIGN The herb garden is developed in a way that it serves the main purpose of planting herbs and giving the additional area to plant vegetables and other shrubs that are used in cooking. The proposed design solution has 2 extra spaces to plant extra veggies without hindering the growth of the other herbs. It is 200 euros less in cost and made from locally sourced materials. The product is fully designed and manufactured by me for 400 euros including the filling of the garden with required fodder, soil, wood chips and mulch.

Ergonomics of the Product

The herb box has to be open from the bottom to keep the temperature optimum as the surrounding. Also, keeping the bottom open is an invite to rodents destroying the produce, because they eat roots. So I introduced wire mesh in order to avoid rodents.

PROCESS The work started with the selection of local wood (Spruce pine) and after getting the desired materials we started with cutting the wooden planks in desired shape and size. The second task was to assemble the cut pieces at the specific positions using wood screws. Then once the structure is formed its ready to undergo processing, silicon sealant and then coating the structure is done using clear lacquer. Once the above process is finished we are ready to go for assembling plastic sheet and wire mesh in the required places. Silicon Sealant to fill the gaps between the wooden joineries

BAMBOO CLIP Design Brief:- Design a simple product using bamboo as materials and one of its properties as the main property of the product. The inspiration to make a bamboo clip was from 36days of type where the day before the virtual event started with alphabet A for which I choose the plastic clip to represent. That’s where the idea started to evolve. I used the linear grain property of bamboo to make the clip. The proposed design consists of 3 bamboo slivers of length 8 inches. The slivers are bent using steam bending technique at an angle of 60 degrees. And one of the slivers is cut from the central point to make the grip of the clip. Rest two are used as a spring and to hold the two cut pieces to form a clip.

Year : 2018 Project Duration : 4 Weeks Project Type : Skill Based New Design

SACRED Design Brief:- Explore the Linear materials creating surfaces, knotting, braiding and many other possibilities.

Year : 2016 Project Duration : 2 weeks Project Type : Skill Based Actual Product

While ideating on the concept and seeing the material possibilities I decided to make a piece of jewelry that has the importance of a kind where it is derived from, why is it made up of the material it is, why are such colors used in it? Sacred is being made inspired by tribs of Africa, Also the colors are taken from the colors they wore in terms of fabric or feather decoration on the headgear. The jewelry is made using acrylic wool and the technique of reef knot AKA square knot creating a surface and the multiple DNA braids in continuation with the square knot. Sacred is meant to wear on occasions cause the tribe doesn’t wear it every day. Sacred as a piece of Jewelry which increases the cost of raw materials used exponentially high with the skills achieved and crafted in a piece of jewel.

Materials and techniques used

Learnings: In this assignment, I got to explore new material i.e. acrylic wool in the form of jewelry which included lots of skill development to work with the new material because if a single strand of wool misplaces the pattern will be disturbed and then I have to start again from new. This assignment and material taught me patience and to be calm in certain situations where it seems impossible to come out of the blunder.

BANJARA Design Brief:- Gather random five materials you find around and upcycle to make it worth buy.

Actual Product

A piece of jewelry made up of natural materials like terracotta, bamboo, wood, and copper. All the materials were hand-picked from scrap materials and hand finished to perfection. The concept of upcycling I connected it with the economic power of which jewelry is a strong indication. The collected materials have broken terracotta piece which I processed with copper dust and clear lacquer to make it look worth a cost. The beads are made up of thin solid bamboo and neem wood piece, and all of the parts are assembled using coiled copper wire around GI wire.

Materials gathered and used

Learnings: I have learned what is upcycling and how can we upgrade the scrap things. Also, how to integrate two or more materials.

CLAY & CERAMICS Ceramics and clay were the very first material which I liked to play during childhood. It was very fascinating to work with such material as I started making nonedible miniature food items using plasticine clay. Also, pottery was one of a miracle during childhood, I tried to mimic a small potters wheel for plasticine clay with the micro dc motors. after my intermediate exams, I got a chance to learn pottery and this hobby helped me become more sensitive towards everything which I see and perceive. It was a pleasure to be taught by one of the pioneering ceramicists of the joiner. I learned a lot of things for 2 months and applied many of those in for product creation. I also learned the chemistry of glazing and the skill to work on the wheel.

SANDING TOOL Design Brief:- Explore the material properties and try out different methods to use wood and make a tool. The tool which I designed is made up of 2 woods pine and teak. The tool is called bow sander, it is used to sand different curvatures in wood and other materials also very effective for filleting the corners. The design is made in a way that 2 kinds of wood are sandwiched and a stronger composite material is made to make tools. The piece of wood is not wasted cause the negatives is again carved out into a smaller sander. The tool gives the flexibility of changeable sanding strips which you can make on your own from any available sandpaper. The changing and usage of the tool is very easy and effective.
