The Best Kept Secret in Television..

If you are a fan of shows like Sex and the City, Girlfriends, Living Single, and the Golden Girls, but craved a new take on these themes then you should know about Noah’s Arc. For many of my girlfriends this was the show to watch as it made you laugh out loud, talk to your television set, and contained more drama and sassiness then any of the other shows combined. Oh, and let me not forget to mention that it surrounds the lives of four black gay friends dealing with everyday trials, tribulations, triumphs and tragedies in beautiful Los Angeles, CA (snaps for the kids). The show featured characters by the likes of Wade, the handsome and sexually confused screen writer; Noah, the shows central character whose failures in love kept you rooting for him with each show; Alex the HIV/AIDS educator whose catchy sayings and loud personality made you double over with laughter; Ricky, the successful entrepreneur whose sexual escapades would make anyone blush; and Chance, the loving husband and father whose career as a college professor made him the more level headed of the group. For fans of the show memorable sayings like “What’s the tea girl” blurted in almost every episode by Rodney Chester who portrays Alex on the hit “dramedy” (drama/comedy), kept audiences on the edge of their seats to see the latest drama that would unfold with each episode. Noah’s Arc was a fantastic show that culminated in December 2008 with the ground breaking movie Noah’s Arc: Jumping The Broom. For those who wished they were a part of the excitement that surrounded this show or would like to relive some of their favorite moments please be prepared for the upcoming Social Butterfly event. SB’s please get ready for the “Noah’s Arc: Drinks and Laughter” events where we will revisit each season with drinks, snacks and plenty of discussion, and conclude the event with the wonderful full length feature film. If you would like more information on this event please email us at keturah_dezignz@yahoo.com. Hope to see you all there for this exciting time!

Getting Personal with McLean Emmanual “The Journey to Financial Independence” replied any dummy can do that and that is how I got started at the Gas Company. SB: Prior to getting into the field you’re in today what were your ideas about credit and finances? ME: My parents stressed the importance of having good credit. However, I looked at the people around me who had credit and they were still broke. So that lead me to believe that people who had credit were in fact broke and were borrowing money which made no sense to me. So I focused on making money and using cash instead of credit.

The move to America in the early 80’s brought Mclean Emmanuel a new sense of hope for the future, as more opportunities were on the horizon. Though, his journey to living the American Dream was not paved with gold, or clearly mapped out Mclean Emmanuel now referred to as “Coach Mac” by colleagues and friends, has truly surpassed the odds and is now not only living but embodying the American Dream. Mr. Emmanuel, never sought to keep up with the Jones’s but has now become them as his continued success in the Financial Services Industry has allowed him the opportunity to provide for his family and continue growing a successful business in these hard times. Moreover, he has remained humble as one of his goals is to teach others how to attain a level of success that will suit their needs. Additionally, Mclean Emmanuel has proven that anything is attainable through hard work, planning and determination. This is made evident in the way he speaks, as his passion to help others become financially independent are made apparent every day. The willingness to share successes and to lay the footsteps for others to follow is highly commended. We are honored to have had the opportunity to pick his brain about his journey, and to share his knowledge in hopes of empowering you to know that all goals are achievable if you want it bad enough and will work hard enough for it. SB: Provide our readers with your history? What were you doing prior to starting your career in the financial services industry? ME: My parents always heard that in America the streets were paved with gold so in 1983 they decided they wanted a better education for their kids and said let’s move to the United States. I had various jobs mainly in retail; I’ve worked for Payless Shoes, Discount Tires, Chief Auto Parts and others. But I never lasted long with any of these jobs I never stayed longer than a year as I was not happy about my current situation and was always looking for better opportunities. Right before I became Regional Vice President in the financial services industry I was working for Pacific Enterprises (Gas Company). I began my career at the Gas Company as a Janitor. At the time I was a temp, and they called me in one day and asked if I knew how to screw in light bulbs or move shelves around and I

SB: Were you aware of the importance of a good credit score? Was it something discussed in your household? What were your friends and families views on credit and finances and how did that affect you on your journey to financial independence? ME: I was aware credit was important but I still thought people who used credit were borrowing money and didn’t have cash of their own. I looked at the use of credit as a loan and I never wanted to be in that situation. We never used credit cards in the Islands. So coming to America I realized I could get a piece of plastic and I could go run it up. When I obtained credit whether it was from Target or anywhere else I would charge the maximum. Even though my parents stressed the importance of credit and that I would one day need it to buy a house I was young and didn’t understand. I’ve since learned that credit is leverage, and gives you more buying power. Now that I’m older and wiser I know that people need to see your credit history before financing you to buy a house or car. SB: With that said what motivated you to get into the financial services industry, who were your mentors/motivators? ME: One of the things that motivated me was a close of friend of mine was going to a financial services seminar and suggested I attend. She told me about her brother-in-law who was working for this company making an extra $1000 to $2000 a month selling some type of insurance. I wasn’t the most qualified applicant at the time, as I hung around guys in my neighborhood who were up to no good. I was involved in a lot of unnecessary activities but never got caught up in the system. However, because I was looking for a change for me and my family I decided that it wouldn’t hurt to go to this seminar. At the time I was only making $23k a year at the Gas Company which back in the day was good money but I still wanted something more fulfilling. By attending the seminar I was exposed to people who were making $100k - $200k a year legally and had the opportunity to meet Gary Kornegay. His story and vision motivated me to do better. Also, I had just got with my wife who is a beautiful Christian woman and at the time I was a rebel and realized I had something special and wanted to give her the world. But I was my biggest motivator, because I had a big vision and I knew that my current job was going to smother my dreams. SB: Did you get apprehension about your decision from your peers or family members?

ME: Yes. I got a lot of apprehension from my brother because I was no longer able to hang out. My mother initially supported me but once I quit my “Good Job” at the Gas Company she began to question my decision. Also, once I started walking, talking, and dressing differently I got a lot of flak from my old neighborhood friends. People thought I had joined a cult and was on drugs. If I would have listened to them I would not be where I am today. SB: What kept you focused on your goals and provided you with the strength to withstand the adversity you encountered? ME: My mother and father are both very successful and hard working individuals. I watched my mother struggle as we came to this country broke to give us a better life. We did not have a car and walked everywhere, spent a lot of time in laundromats as we couldn’t afford the luxury of having our own washer/dryer and she never once complained. As a matter of fact I’ve traced my ancestry back to my country and learned I come from a blood line of strong, dedicated and hard working people. So naturally I inherited a good work ethic. SB: During your process to financial independence/freedom what was or were the silliest things you spent your money on? ME: No real regrets. One of the things we learned in this business is to invest in appreciating assets like owning a home. When we made our first $100,000 we were still living in a four-plex in a bad neighborhood. So we have never really done silly things, I like gadgets like remote control cars and airplanes. But we have not done anything that would make you go WOW why did we do that? SB: Learning from your mistake/mistakes what do you feel are the top 3 things people waste their money on? And what advice could you give? ME: The mistakes people make are investing money in depreciating assets such as cars, clothes, and entertainment. The point of your car is to get you from point A to point B. Don’t buy things to impress people; you don’t get anything from impressing people. The best advice I could give is to not live above your means and make sure you have a budget in place you work off of consistently and most importantly pay yourself first. SB: What was the best financial advice you ever received and how did you apply it to your everyday life? ME: The best financial advice I received was to become debt free. Once debt is eliminated your able to save more. You want to be able to save money so money can save you. SB: What do you feel are the major areas people can work on to achieve the same level of success you have? ME: First and foremost you need the right vehicle. Having the right vehicle and being in the right business can take you where you

want to go. Do your research. Learn about the business you want to be a part of. SET GOALS! As everything revolves around the goals you set. WRITE them DOWN! A goal not written is a wish. Once you set goals internalize them so that they become you. Create an action plan and execute it. Once executed all hell will break loose, but you have to remain focused. I have made it a requirement that all members of my team create dream portfolios with goals, dreams and aspirations they want to accomplish. This allows them to have a visible plan that they see every day and work towards. Whenever you feel like you want to give up put your goals and dreams in front of you. SB: What advice would you give to a young person just starting out on how to invest their money? ME: Start Now. The earlier you start the better. You have to understand how money works, once you understand that you have the ability to appreciate the value of money. Me and my Wife value money now. We’ve always had money but before we started in financial services we would spend our money on unnecessary items like buying clothes and she would get her hair done twice a week. We look back realize that the money spent on those items could have been invested. With anything that you do discipline is a must. Save and invest your money, you hear people say get out of the market but that’s because they don’t understand the market. The only way to get wealthy today is through the market. You have to have discipline, find out what you want, invest your money longterm and talk to somebody who knows investments, someone who really cares about your financial well-being not the average person who handles investments that can have you fill out an application and take a check. Do your research. SB: And what are 5 important tips you can give to our readers that you wish you would have known about money and reaching financial stability? ME: Save money, understand the importance of good credit, develop people skills, know the value of starting and building a business, and know the importance of being in a positive environment. I wish I would have known the importance of saving money 25 years ago. I started my business at 26 years old but wish I would have known about starting and building a business at 18 years old. I wish I had better people skills before getting into the business. It took me 2 years to really grasp how to deal with people. Being in a positive environment is also important, looking back that is something that should have been important but was not. Success is the same whether you are a leader of a church or a large organization. To become successful you have to separate yourself from everybody else. Look at what everybody else is doing and don’t go down that same road.

What does your financial report card say about you?

Looking good is at the top of just about everyone’s priority list. Nice clothes, fabulous hair and a swagger that screams “you are amazing” But are you? Ladies it’s time that we not only work on our outer appearance but our financial credit appearance. We all try to keep up with the Jones’s but wouldn’t you rather be the Jones’s? So with that said how do you look financially and what does your credit say about you? As we all know credit is very important, yet a lot of us still have yet to understand why this three digit number carries so much weight. We’ve all been young and irresponsible with our credit at some point. Whether it was not paying a past due cell phone bill, being late on a credit card payment, or co-signing for an irresponsible friend/past love (inserting side eye) we have all made horrible decisions. We know that the New Year is quickly approaching and every year one of the most popular resolutions is to pay off debt or save money. As a result, what will you do to better your financial situation for the upcoming year? If you need assistance please continue reading as this newsletter along with others will provide information to guide you on your journey to financial freedom. Have you ever noticed that as women we tend to take on more than we can chew? We continuously try to please our family and loved ones which can ultimately get us into trouble with our finances. Money, to a lot of us has no value and we have a tendency to give it away to appease others, but what about your needs? Women are more inclined to put on that “Super Woman Cape” and rescue others, that we forget to think of us. I know we like to look good but you need to feel good as well, and when your finances are out of order that’s definitely not a good feeling. So let’s get to the nitty-gritty about finances and the main ingredient “credit”, and how it has a major impact on our lives. Did you know that your credit follows you your entire life? And if you ever want to borrow money, get financed for a car, or buy a home the lender will look at your credit to determine if they are willing to lend you funds. In addition, many employers are checking credit when hiring potential candidates to determine who would make a good employee. Not only does your credit determine your eligibility to receive financing, but it also determines how much it will end up costing you to borrow. Individuals with high credit scores are seen as less of a risk and therefore will naturally receive lower interest rates. Those individuals with lower scores are viewed as more of a risk so their interest rates will typically be higher. So it’s very important to know where you stand. Moreover, begin to look at your credit score as a grade; the higher the number the higher the grade and vice versa. Now ask yourself do you want to get tutored or lend money to the person with an “F” in the class of life or are

you more inclined to respect the ideas of the person with an “A”?…. don’t worry I’ll wait. Additionally, knowing how your credit score is comprised will help in your decision making process. All credit scores take into consideration various information from your credit report that says a lot about you. Some parts of your credit history are naturally more important than others and will weigh more heavily on your overall score. Your FICO score is basically made up of the following: (brace yourselves and pray that Jesus will take the wheel) • Payment history 35% • Total amount of debt owed 30% • Length of your credit history 15% • Applications for new credit 10% • Type of credit in use 10% (car, student loans, credit cards etc.) As you can see the bulk of your credit score depends heavily on your payment history and how much debt you owe. These two items combined account for 65% of your total score and are the two major components that need to be analyzed in order to improve your credit. What happens if you’ve made a couple mistakes? Not to fret my pet we have all been there and have had a come to Jesus session with ourselves about this. So try not to worry as your credit score is steadily updating. If you are beginning to improve your credit monthly by taking the initiative to make payments on time, your credit score will be sure to follow. Reducing your total amount of debt will significantly help raise your credit score as well. Please keep in mind these things do not happen overnight as you did not accumulate this debt over night. And more importantly please note that many of these items remain on your credit report for up to seven years, so look at these changes as a marathon and not a sprint to the finish line.

Tips to help eliminate debt: Don’t spend what you don’t have – If you can’t pay for it now with cash you don’t need it! Put the credit cards away and use cash more often! Cut

them up if you have too. The only way you’re going to eliminate debt is by not incurring new debt. Using cash will get you in touch with reality regarding the money you actually have and help eliminate your desire to spend money that you don’t. If you want to use a card, use a debit card that withdraws money straight from your checking account, without interest. Everyone has expenses, but minimize your expenditures as much as possible and concentrate on putting your money toward the payment of debt you’ve already incurred. Build up a cash cushion – I know this is difficult, that dress you have been wanting is now on sale so it’s time to make a decision Ideally, you should have three months’ expenses set aside for emergencies like job loss, disability or divorce/breakup. For example, if your bills are $3,000 a month, you should have a $9,000 cash cushion. Start saving it now and consider that money untouchable. Get a financial planner – If you need help GET IT! Hiring financial help isn’t just for the rich, and it doesn’t have to be that expensive. Do your research and utilize people around you who embody the qualities you wish to have. Put everything in writing – If your list is more than a standard sheet of paper you need to get YOUR LIFE IN ORDER! Create a written list or a spreadsheet itemizing each creditor you owe with interest rates included. For some people, this step will be a big eye-opener. You may find out that you have way more debt than you thought. For others, putting all your obligations in black and white will be a relief ... you’ll discover things aren’t as bad as you imagined. Having everything in writing gives you a realistic look at where you stand and you are able to visually see where all of your hard earned money has gone and ways to improve upon those bad habits. Call up creditors and negotiate – Don’t be scared, they call you so beat them to the punch and give them a ring Consumers don’t realize that they can call up their creditors and ask for lower interest rates, or request that late charges or annual fees be waived. Often, credit card companies will lower your rate on the spot, simply because they don’t want to lose your business. It’s a competitive market — credit card companies send out nearly five billion offers to consumers each year — and most credit card issuers know that customers will switch cards if their interest rate is too high. So using your list of bills you created in the previous step, call up each creditor and start negotiating.

Cut spending and apply savings to debt – You know that dress that was on sale? You don’t need it!! Look for ways to slash your spending. For example, if you own a car, you can refinance your auto loan and save big bucks. Pay at least three times the minimum due – That $10 payment is not helping you put a dent in your debt. It’s only prolonging the time it will take to pay it off. Credit card companies typically ask that you pay just 2 percent of the outstanding balance. But if you only make minimum payments, you’ll never get out of debt. For example, if you carry a balance of $13,000 on your credit cards and pay 15 percent annual interest, making just the minimum payments will take you more than 25 years to pay off that debt — and that’s assuming you never charge another dime! The solution: Always pay more than the minimum due. If you can swing it, pay at least three times the minimum required payment. Remember: “minimum” payments now really mean “maximum” payments in the long run! Try a new approach – For all you credit card addicts this one is a doozy. There are many ways to cut spending habits that may not sound very glamorous, but may be easier and more beneficial than you imagined. You can shop at wholesale outlets instead of retailers, take a couple hours on Sunday night to make your lunches in bulk for the week, and perhaps you might want to break out the coffee maker instead of stopping at your favorite coffee shop every morning. Remember, you don’t have to make these lifestyle changes forever, just long enough to eliminate your debt. Who knows, you just may enjoy them.

Whats the T Gurl?

This section allows our readers to weigh on the discussion topic and how it has impacted their lives. *Names have been changed to protect the innocent*

I wish back in high school that instead of learning about History and English my teachers would have stressed the importance of credit and how it would impact my life. I know you always here credit is important but when you have cash why do you need credit was my mentality. NOT ANYMORE! It doesn’t matter how much cash you have without credit kiss your life good-bye. After high school I went credit card crazy..CHARGE IT! It was fun while it lasted but I realized I have to pay all that back and that’s when the music stopped. I’ve gotten married and what’s the first thing you want to do? Yes, you guessed it buy a house and my credit was a hot mess. So I had to re-visit all the debt I had accumulated and yes PAY IT BACK! As you know this takes time and discipline but I had a dream I needed to accomplish and fast! So after a year and half of making payments on time and paying off my debt my credit score has jumped up but it’s still not where I want it to be. However, I accomplished my goal and I’m ready to move in my NEW HOUSE! Hard work and discipline goes a long way. I’m excited! Excited and Ready Parents!!! Please stop putting credit cards and your utility bills in your children’s name. You are truly doing your child a disservice and hindering their ability to live full and successful lives. So when you’re baby grows up and complains of not being able to get that nice car, dream house, or that well paying job it is imperative to note that it’s not by their fault alone. Just because you made bad financial decisions in your life and can’t get a piece of candy on credit doesn’t mean your child should suffer the same consequences. Thanks for the time to shine Upset Child

I opened a few credit cards (yes I said few so please don’t judge) and thought nothing of it until I went to buy my very first car. I was so excited and felt so proud when I stepped on the lot as this was the first grown up moment I had up to this point. Well I can’t even begin to tell you how shocked I was to find out that the fabulous purchases I made at Express, Victoria secret, and countless other retailers would put me in a position to have to beg someone to cosign on my car!! I can’t tell you how badly I wish someone, anybody would have talked me out of getting these cards or at least helped to limit my ability to use them. Now what was suppose to help me build a good credit rating has since created huge problems in my life. Trust and believe I’ve learned my lesson and am working harder to not make the same mistakes. Sincerely Fly Walking Cutie

Hey TT, I am a budding young entrepreneur and I have a bad habit of telling people about my ideas and they (friends/family) continue to hate on any possible success I may have. What should I do? I love my family and friends and want them to share in all blessings that come my way. Am I being to dramatic about this or should I say something? Sincerely, Dream Deferred Pasadena, CA” Dear Dream Deferred, I would say that I feel sorry for you, but I really don’t. And as much as I hate to say it you really need to keep your mouth closed!! We all want to include others on our journey to success but the truth of the matter is most of the folks we invite for the ride can’t fit, are not smart enough to know how to get on and stay with it, or hold the ride up. As a result it’s important to know that there are some people that aren’t receptive to your dreams or can’t fathom the level of success you’re seeking to accomplish. Unfortunately, in most cases we find that our biggest critics are our family and friends, and once we realize that we’re dreaming for us and not for them all things will fall into place. It’s important to know (and trust me I know it’s a hard pill to swallow) that it’s not necessary to feel the need to share every little success nor do most people want to hear about it! I’m all for being positive and congratulating someone on a job well done, but if you expect me to stroke your ego every other day then I must say it gets a little annoying! So all in all keep dreaming, keep thriving, but please keep your mouth closed! Keep the dream alive, ~TT

TT, I consider myself a very stand up young lady and a nice person. I am all for keeping it real no matter if it’s with a family member or friend but I never intend to come off rude or disrespectful. Well my problem is I’ve known this girl for over a year and we started off as good friends but she is so negative that I really can’t stand to talk or be around her anymore. Is it wrong to tell her that she’s a hot mess and that I don’t want her calling me anymore or is my current strategy of avoidance the better option? Sincerely, So not trying to be rude, Altadena, CA Hey so not trying to be rude, You are a woman after my own heart! I love love love the messiness of your situation and as much as I want to give you sound advice like talk it out and friends are important I am so not the one! Look, not everyone is meant to be friends and not everyone is going to get along. It never fails there is always a group of 5 really close female friends but within the clique there’s a sub clique so think of your situation as such. There are certain people that you mesh well with and others that you can’t stand and there is no need to feel bad about it or fake being someone’s friends which is worse than just avoiding her or telling her you’re not feeling her attitude. If I were you I would tell her how I felt about her and how her negativity is something I can live without. You never know she may or may not come around. However, be careful how you say things because it’s not what you say but how you say it. ~TT
