UNCOMMON COVERAGE S

ome 50 years later, Bob Babbage still remembers what former Kentucky governor Louie B. Nunn once told him about KET, which had launched just a few years prior with aims of delivering educational content to all corners of the Commonwealth. KET, he recalls Nunn saying, would “pull us all together.” “He was referring, of course, to all the teaching that KET could do,” said Babbage, a former Kentucky Secretary of State and State Auditor. “But he never could have imagined in 1970 just how immensely valuable another aspect of KET would be to our state — its public affairs coverage. It really has become a focal point for so much of the information we share.” Trey Grayson, another former Secretary of State, agreed. Grayson said he’d been laid low by the coronavirus for 10 days in July but was still able to stay on top of what was happening in Frankfort thanks to KET’s legislative coverage. “It’s kind of amazing to think that — even in the middle of a pandemic — I could still do my job and watch the committee hearings at my convenience, all while stuck in bed battling

COVID,” Greyson said. “It just shows what a tremendous resource KET is.” Though Babbage, a Democrat, and Grayson, a Republican, hail from opposing political parties and often clash on their opinions, they’re

something all the more important as the state’s newspaper have downsized, closing bureaus and scaling back statewide coverage, Babbage said. “KET makes it possible for us as a state to think together and consider the same issues,” Babbage added. “There’s a common consensus built through uncommon coverage. And in many respects, it’s more important now than ever before.” And programs Bob Babbage (left) and Trey Grayson appeared on KET’s Election Results such as Kentucky 2020 program in November. Tonight bring to the both in agreement on the value of table a wide range of knowledgeKET. The network, they say, serves able guests — from lawmakers and as a “unifying force” for a Common- policy advocates to educators and wealth sometimes driven apart by those working on the front lines political, economic and geographic — affording viewers a diversity diversity. They point to KET’s of viewpoints that don’t just break public affairs coverage, through conveniently along party lines. programs such as Kentucky Tonight, “Not every issue falls into that Comment on Kentucky and Legislakind of simple framework,” Graytive Update, saying that they offer a son said. “A lot of times what you trusted outlet for statewide informasee on MSNBC or FOX is a headtion. to-head personality battle. But KET KET’s programs, they said, go takes a different approach — everyinto depth, giving viewers a chance one’s on equal footing and it’s more to take a “deep dive” on subjects — a battle of ideas.”

If you’re like me, you’ve been looking forward to this new year — perhaps more than any before it. With a new year comes a sense of new beginnings, and hopefully 2021 will be the beginning of a successful recovery from the worst pandemic of our lifetimes. As many know, COVID-19 impacted what was already a rapidly changing jobs landscape. This month, a new KET Forum will explore some of these workforce changes. Throughout the coming year, KET will continue to develop and provide educational resources, such as Workplace Essential Skills, focused on today’s most in-demand careers. For parents, teachers and students, we will continue to provide at-home learning resources, including a new series beginning this month, Let’s Learn!, as well as our highly utilized instructional resources for the classroom and professional development courses for educators. And we will continue to explore the issues confronting Kentuckians — providing important, trusted information and featuring a diversity of voices and viewpoints. As we begin contemplating a return to normalcy, KET will be here with an unwavering commitment to serving you, your family and Kentuckians across the Commonwealth. Wishing you all the best in the new year. Sincerely,

Shae Hopkins

The magical tales of James

Herriot, the world’s most beloved veterinarian, and his menagerie of heartwarming animal patients comes to KET this month in a new sevenpart Masterpiece series. Since the publication 50 years ago of All Creatures Great & Small, the beloved books of James Alfred Wight, published under the Herriot pen name, have held a special place in people’s hearts throughout the world. Chronicling the humorous adventures of a young veterinarian in rural England, the books introduced readers to his unconventional mentor and the cast of farmers and townsfolk who lived and worked in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1930s. The first television adaptation of Herriot’s novels were produced by the BBC and aired on PBS
