AN ADVOCATE FOR
AUTISM AWARENESS
For Donovan Blackburn, president and CEO of the Pikeville Medical Center, the subject of autism is a personal one.
In 2017, his 2-year-old granddaughter Ava was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. And the challenges his family faced finding care, traveling hundreds of miles to visit with specialists, were a big motivator in his efforts to build a care
facility in Pikeville, the Appalachian Valley Autism (AVA) Center, which has grown to where it’s now one of the largest of its kind in the nation.
“Part of the AVA Center’s mission is advocacy and education, and that’s because a lot of people don’t understand what autism is,” Blackburn said. “It’s labeled as a disability, but it’s not. It’s a different set of abilities, one that enables a child to see the world differently.”
His drive to promote autism awareness will soon get a boost from an unlikely source: an animated series.
This month, KET will begin airing a new PBS KIDS series, Carl the Collector, which is the first of its kind to feature central characters on the autism spectrum (see story on page 5). The series follows the everyday
IT’S SO IMPORTANT TO HAVE A VOICE IN OUR STATE THAT TELLS AN UNBIASED STORY AND SERVES AS AN ADVOCATE FOR EDUCATION.
-
Donovan Blackburn president and CEO, Pikeville Medical Center
adventures of Carl, a warm-hearted autistic racoon, and is created by a production team that includes neurodiverse writers, animators and voice talent.
“The first time I saw a clip from the program I got choked up,” Blackburn said. “Realizing that the voice behind Carl is actually a young man who’s also on the spectrum, it just broke my heart with happiness. Here is a cartoon that both a neurotypical child and a child on the spectrum can relate to and learn and grow from. And having that representation, I think the impact it will have will be immeasurable.”
As a new member of KET’s fund-raising board, Blackburn said it’s only fitting that the children’s series will air daily on KET, a network he said he was honored to join for its commitment to education and serving the needs of the Commonwealth.
“It was a huge eye-opener for me just to see everything that KET does for Kentuckians,” Blackburn said. “It’s so important to have a voice in our state that tells an unbiased story and serves as an advocate for education. And KET, which I relied upon heavily in my former role as Pikeville’s city manager for its coverage of the General Assembly, consistently has shown that it’s committed to doing the right thing and improving lives in the Commonwealth.”
Much of what the AVA Center seeks to teach its “learners” through behavioral therapy revolves around learning to communicate and getting accustomed to new experiences. To that end, the center employs rooms that mimic a trip to the dentist, barbershop and doctor’s office, where children can grow comfortable at their own pace with these kinds of services.
In Carl the Collector, Blackburn said he sees the same spirit of discovery and problem-solving.
“It’s so important that the representation on Carl the Collector be about real stories of real life—and that’s something the program really gets right,” he said. “There’s healing in telling your story. And for the staff at the AVA Center, it was overwhelming when they realized that so much of what they work for on a local level will now reach families across the Commonwealth. We’re obviously going to be promoting it like crazy. I can’t wait.”
TODAY’S KET
In 2015, Sesame Street introduced Julia, the beloved series’ first character on the autism spectrum. Since then, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood and other series have also introduced autistic characters.
Given the impact such characters have begun to have on both children’s and adults’ understanding of neurodivergence, we are extremely excited to premiere Carl the Collector this month. Not only is it the first animated children’s series centering on an autistic main character, it was created by a production team that includes neurodiverse writers, animators and voice talent, including the young man who is the voice behind Carl, the warm-hearted autistic racoon. Findings from earlier this year show 1 in 36 children are now identified with an autism spectrum condition; and it is essential that we have programs like Carl the Collector – not only for these children to see themselves but to build upon everyone’s evolving awareness of autism and of neurodiversity as a whole.
To that end, KET has produced and presented several programs on autism. You can find them and more resources at KET.org/Autism .
We appreciate your support that helps in KET’s efforts to promote understanding and empathy and to celebrate the uniqueness of us all. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins KET Executive Director and CEO
Ken Burns’ documentary examines the life of
LEONARDO DA VINCI
Leonardo da Vinci is a two-part, four-hour documentary directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon that explores the life and work of the 15th-century Italian polymath.
Known for his soaring imagination and profound intellect, da Vinci sketched futuristic contraptions of warfare and flight that today are marveled at for their technical ingenuity and foresight. And his paintings and drawings – such as the Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, and the Vitruvian Man – are among the most celebrated works of all time.
The film marks Burns’ first non-American subject and introduces a significant change in the team’s filmmaking style, which includes using split screens with images, video and sound from different periods to further
contextualize Leonardo’s art and scientific explorations.
Set against the rich and dynamic backdrop of Renaissance Italy, at a time of skepticism and freethinking, regional war, and religious upheaval, the film brings the artist’s towering achievements to life through his prolific personal notebooks, primary and secondary accounts of his life, and on-camera interviews with modern scholars, artists, engineers, inventors and admirers.
“No single person can speak to our collective effort to understand the world and ourselves,” said Ken Burns. “But Leonardo had a unique genius for inquiry, aided by his extraordinary skills as an artist and scientist, that helps us better understand the natural world that we are part of and to appreciate more fully what it means to be alive and human.”

New
animated children’s series centers on autistic character
This month, KET premieres a new animated children’s program that breaks ground as the first PBS KIDS series to feature central characters on the autism spectrum.
Developed for children ages 4-8, Carl the Collector follows Carl, a warm-hearted, neurodiverse raccoon who enjoys collecting things and solving problems with his friends and family in Fuzzytown, their home community. As a perfectionist, when Carl does something, he wants to do it well. He sometimes struggles with anxiety in new situations and has difficulty when things don’t go according to plan.
Through its relatable stories, characters, and messages – and with a production team that includes neurodiverse
writers, production staff, animators, advisors and voice talent – Carl the Collector “spotlights neurodiverse characters while exploring and celebrating the entire spectrum of humanity,” said Zachariah OHora, the series creator and executive producer.
