Visions July 2024

Acity commissioner and president of the Paducah Area Chamber of Commerce, Sandra Wilson spends a large part of her day thinking about her home city and what she can do to help make it a better place to live, work and raise a family.

Thanks to its variety of restaurants and shops, its arts and crafts scene,

and its widening industrial base, Paducah has a lot going for it. And Wilson’s eager for the city to continue its growth and to make inroads with young professionals and the next generation of Kentuckians.

“We work to continually improve Paducah because we want others to love it as much as we do,” she said.

Wilson’s devotion to her home

city’s quality of life is a big reason why she’s a fan of KET. As Kentucky’s only statewide media, KET keeps Paducah and neighboring communities connected to the Commonwealth through its programs and resources that give viewers a fascinating window into Kentucky’s history, people and places.

“I can’t tell you enough about how

KET GIVES YOU DIVERSE INSIGHT INTO THE THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING AROUND THE STATE AND NOT JUST IN YOUR BACKYARD.

much we appreciate everything that KET does for Paducah,” Wilson said. “You not only get a diverse snapshot of what’s happening around the Commonwealth, you’re also learning about Kentucky’s history – and so many of those hometown stories are just priceless.”

Bordered by Illinois, Missouri and Tennessee, Paducah’s location amid a patchwork of different media markets often means media outlets carry limited news about what’s happening throughout the rest of Kentucky. But with KET, and its public affairs programs like Kentucky Edition and Kentucky Tonight, Wilson says residents can stay on top of Kentucky’s news.

“It’s important to be informed, of course, not only about what’s going on in your local community but also the wider state,” she said. “KET gives you diverse insight into the things that are happening around the state and not just in your backyard.”

Additionally, through KET’s coverage of the state legislature as well as townhall-style forums, Kentuckians can stay educated about the Commonwealth’s economic and workforce development issues – topics that are near and dear to Wilson,

who said she keeps a computer running with KET’s legislative coverage in the background throughout the day.

“Let’s face it, every community needs more workers and more housing,” she said. “There are a lot of things that all communities have in common, so I think it’s great that KET creates a venue for community leaders to come together and share ideas. And Renee Shaw – I can’t say enough about how great she is – she always does a marvelous job moderating. She makes you feel like she’s right there in your living room with you.”

And KET’s balanced, non-partisan coverage, she adds, explores a diversity of viewpoints, fostering a spirit of cooperation.

“There are so many things that we can do to learn about our community and make us feel more at home,” Wilson said. “And KET definitely plays an important part in this, reaching across the aisle so we can understand each other a little better. As someone who’s driven to make my community the best it can be, those are the kinds of things that help us all feel connected.”

TODAY’S KET

Over the course of KET’s more than 55-year history, we’ve been fortunate to reach quite a few milestones. Last month, however, marked quite a different kind of achievement.

Our Kentucky Life program on the remarkable find of Civil War coins buried in a Kentucky cornfield had more than one million views. It was a story that resonated with people here, across the country and even around the world.

This kind of viewership and this broad reach is possible because of the many ways we make our programming content available.

Our 16-transmitter broadcast network remains essential for the people of Kentucky. But modern Internet-based technology also allows us to deliver live streaming and on-demand content on our website and through the PBS app, which is available on nearly all devices including Roku, Apple TV, smart TVs, mobile and more. We also put select programming on YouTube and other digital platforms. All of this opens up possibilities that would have seemed impossible when KET first signed on the air in 1968. We do this to give our viewers choices and let you enjoy our programs wherever, whenever and however you’d like. (We know, though, that it can be confusing. Learn more at KET.org/how-to-watch or call our Viewer Services at (866) 291-8189

But what also makes this technology exciting is the ability it gives us to showcase Kentucky far beyond the state’s boundaries. There are so many fascinating stories originating from right here in our state, and every day KET shares them with the world. Thank you for helping make this possible.

Sincerely,

What to know about long-term care insurance

Two things are expensive when it comes to long-term care: the cost of the care and the cost of a long-term care insurance policy.

There's not much you can do about the cost of long-term care itself — from about $5,100 a month for a home health aide to roughly $8,000 a month, on average, for a semiprivate room in a nursing home. That can mean an annual cost of nearly $100,000.

But there are ways to save money on a long-term care insurance policy.

What long-term care insurance pays for

A long-term-care insurance policy won’t pay for things like groceries or doctor visits, but it does provide for home care assistance for activities like bathing, dressing and toileting. Those over 65 have a 70 percent chance of needing long-term care eventually, according to federal estimates.

Medicare generally doesn't cover long-term care. So, unless you'll qualify for Medicaid or have enough in savings to self-insure, a longterm care policy could be worth considering.

What long-term care insurance costs

A standard long-term care policy with inflation protection often runs between $2,000 and $3,600 a year for $165,000 in benefits if you purchase one in your mid-50s (the typical age of a buyer). Premiums for women can be substantially more than for men since women live longer, in general.

The price of a long-term care insurance policy can be considerably higher if you buy it in your 60s or 70s than in your 50s.

"I usually tell people a policy will cost anywhere from about 4 percent to 6 percent more a year if you wait to buy it," said Brian Gordon, president of a long-term care planning firm.

But your application may get rejected due to your health if you try to buy a long-term care insurance policy in your 60s or 70s.

"Not everybody is going to be a candidate to buy long-term care," Gordon noted.

Potential reasons for declined applications: obesity, hypertension, cancer, dementia and joint problems.

How to cut long-term care policy cost

One way to reduce the cost of a long-term care insurance policy is buying one that will only pay benefits for two to five years or so, rather than lifetime benefits. And be sure to find an insurer with strong financial health, since its benefits likely won't be paid out for years. You or your agent can review insurers' financial strength by looking at their ratings from companies like A.M. Best, Moody's and Standard & Poor's.
