OR DR. HENRY WEBB, Floyd County Schools’ superintendent, there are no challenges, only opportunities, for the students under his purview. Webb has led Floyd County, a mountain district beset by poverty, to become one of the top districts in the state. Key to closing the achievement gap, he says, is attitude. “The research is clear that students dealing with poverty have different ‘opportunities’ than other students in other places,” he said, explaining that he prefers that terminology over “problems” or “challenges.” “KET’s resources are essential, and they have always been very costeffective — and it’s quality. If we truly, truly care about our kids, we will have high expectations and give them the tools they need to be successful,” he said.

TECHNOLOGY & RESOURCES Education is changing, Webb notes, and the district strongly believes that technology is an essential tool to enhance instruction. And when used appropriately, it will take classrooms to new levels of learning for all students. “We’ve made a significant investment in technology,” Webb notes. Currently, 2,000 students in Floyd County are equipped with laptops and a backpack of ancillary materials — and there are plans to have them in the hands of every student in grades 5

through 12 within two years. Instructional materials provided by KET include PBS LearningMedia, which contains high-quality classroom and professional development resources from KET and its public media partners. Teachers have access to videos, lesson plans, and more on every subject for all grade levels. “And every time we need help, KET comes immediately, there’s not a turnaround time of six to eight months,” he added. “Having partnerships like KET is essential to making sure our students become college and careerready.”

TEACHER TRAINING “In our summer academy,” he continued, “there is professional development specifically on electronic devices for instruction in the classroom and for software and other resources to help use them. And that’s where we are really going to the next level in our school system,” he said. And at that professional development training, KET plays a prominent role. Few partners, he said, are more important to teachers and students in Floyd County than KET and the education and technology resources it provides. “We have about 300 teachers and many of the sessions are led by our outstanding teachers here in Floyd County, but our outside collaborative partners also come in [including] KET — which has been an integral part of that,” he said. “KET comes to our academy and

I visit schools a lot, and I see a lot of videos, a lot of video clips. I see teachers are using KET resources regularly.”

EARLY CHILDHOOD Research shows that early childhood education is crucial for determining a child’s later success in school — and Webb says increased funding augmented by KET’s resources has helped Floyd County make enormous strides in that area as well. “The work KET has done has helped us raise our percentages of children who are kindergarten-ready,” he said. “Right now, its at about 80 percent, and the state average is 55 percent.” KET.org

New Ken Burns documentary profiles baseball’s Jackie Robinson

Learn the story of Jack Roosevelt Robinson. He rose from humble origins to break baseball’s color barrier and waged a fierce, lifelong battle for first-class citizenship for all African Americans that transcends even his remarkable athletic achievements. Ken Burns weaves the story of Robinson’s life with the social change he helped to bring about in Jackie Robinson, a new two-part, four-hour documentary. “Jackie Robinson is the most important figure in our nation’s most important game,” said Burns. “He gave us our first lasting progress in civil rights since the Civil War and, ever since I finished my Baseball series in 1994, I’ve been eager to make a stand-alone film about the life of this courageous American. “There was so much more to say not only about Robinson’s barrier-breaking moment in 1947, but

Ken Burns examines the life and times of Jack Roosevelt Robinson, who in 1947 lifted a nation and an entire race on his shoulders when he crossed baseball’s color line. about how his upbringing shaped his intolerance for any form of discrimination,” he continued. “After his baseball career, he spoke out tirelessly against racial injustice, even after his star had begun to dim.” Born in 1919 to tenant farmers in rural Georgia and raised in Pasadena, Calif., Robinson challenged institutional racism long before he integrated Major League Baseball.

Robinson is often celebrated for stoically turning the other cheek to the threats and insults he faced during his first season in the majors, and what’s lost is that this display of self-restraint went completely against his character. For the sake of future African Americans in the game, and on the advice of Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey, that first season, he agreed to remain silent in the face of threats — and proceeded to dazzle fans with his brilliant play and helped lead the Dodgers to the National League pennant. By the end of the year, Jackie Robinson was the most famous black man in the country and in one poll finished second only to Bing Crosby as the most popular American.

Alice’s Restaurant 50th Anniversary Concert KET Friday, April 15 • 10/9 pm Back in 1965, Arlo Guthrie took out the trash following a “Thanksgiving dinner that couldn’t be beat.” The hilarious account of actual events that precluded Arlo from military service in 1966 went on to become Alice’s Restaurant, a platinum-selling record in 1967, and a full-length motion picture in 1969. This concert, featuring Arlo’s son, Abe Guthrie, on keyboards, represents the first time in a decade the folk icon has brought “The Alice’s Restaurant Massacree” in its entirety to the stage.

New program tells life story of Ashland Oil’s John Hall

rom the academic halls and the gridiron at Vanderbilt University to the competitive business world at Ashland Oil, Texas native John Hall thrived on competitiveness, tenacity, and compassion. Learn his story in John Hall: The Kentucky Commodore, premiering Tuesday, April 26 at 8/7 pm on KET. Today a well-known philanthropist, Hall has spearheaded efforts to help many causes, including education, KET, Keeneland, and the Markey Cancer Center at the University of Kentucky. It all began with Esso Oil, founded by John D. Rockefeller. He left for the smaller Ashland Oil in 1957. A chemical engineer, Hall was hired in Research and Development and by 1979, was vice president in charge of refining. In the 1970s, with the nation facing a shortage of crude, Hall negotiated an oil deal with the Iranian revolutionary government of the Ayatollah Khomeni. Soon after, the board voted to name him head of the company at the age of 48. Hailed as a superior leader, Hall was known as a quick thinker as well as for his integrity and honesty. He was also

lauded for his responsible reaction to the company’s disastrous oil spill into the Monongahela River at Pittsburgh, the largest spill in the U.S. at that time. That crisis handled, Hall soon turned his attention to another: education in Kentucky. Ashland Oil launched a longterm campaign to draw attention to the issue, aligning the company’s reputation as a good corporate citizen with a goal shared by many leaders as well as the public — better schools. Ashland and other corporate entities created the Partnership for Kentucky Education, putting their own resources into it. It served as a national model for public/private partnerships for many years. After his 1996 retirement, Hall continued to participate in public life, serving on some of the largest boards in America, including Banc One. Hosted by Bill Goodman, the programs air Mondays at 8/7 pm on KET. The programs will also stream live at KET.org/live and will be archived online. Shot on location in Harlan County, Ky., and Wales’ Dulais Valley, After Coal introduces exminers rebuilding community infrastructure, women transforming a former coal board office into an education hub, and young people striving to stay in their home communities. The stories of coalfield residents who must abandon traditional livelihoods illustrate the challenge of creating a sustainable future. Music plays a major role in this documentary essay, linking the two regions and demonstrating how cultural traditions can help create a brighter future. KET Fast Forward is highly effective, helping students getting their GED credential According to a new study, 92 percent of students who use KET Fast Forward to study for their high-school equivelency are passing the test. An independent evaluation firm, Arroyo Research Services, recently completed a project to assess the effectiveness of KET’s comprehensive online instructional system for adult learners. The survey of teachers and students in Kentucky and nationwide showed that of the KET Fast Forward learners who attempted all four parts of the GED® test — science, math, social studies, and language arts — fully 92 percent earned their GED credential. Fast Forward was launched in January 2014. It has been used in adult education learning centers in Kentucky and across the U.S. Learn more at KETFastForward.org.

Outdoors program ‘Kentucky Afield’ lands new host Chad Miles, who grew up pan fishing the Salt River and hunting rabbits and squirrels, is the new host of Kentucky Afield, a production of the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources airing on KET. Miles, 41, a Mount Washington native, becomes the seventh host of the nation’s longest continuously running outdoor TV show. He succeeds Tim Farmer, who retired in December after 20 years. Miles is the former executive director of the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Foundation. His first Kentucky Afield program will air April 2, when he will also be joined by Farmer for a final farewell. The series airs Saturdays at 8:30/7:30 pm and Sundays at 4:30/3:30 pm on KET.
