KET PBS KIDS channel launches statewide The KET PBS KIDS channel is a new, educational 24/7 children’s service that includes free, full-time programming available on air, on mobile, and online. The channel is available statewide through KET’s 16 transmitter overthe-air broadcast network, on cable systems, and via livestream at KET.org/kids, and on the PBS KIDS Video App – for Apple and Android devices – 24 hours a day.
Helping Kentucky children prepare for school In Kentucky, where screenings indicate that only half of the state’s children enter kindergarten prepared for school, KET PBS KIDS programming offers an accessible source for high-quality, educational programming that helps children become Kindergarten-ready.
“Well-designed television programs, such as Sesame Street, can improve cognitive, literacy, and social outcomes for children 3 to 5 years of age.” — American Academy of Pediatrics
Free access to highquality early education resources For the many Kentucky children who are not in any formal preschool environment, KET is the only highquality early childhood education resource accessible to every home in Kentucky. The new service provides learning opportunities during the times of day when children watch TV the most: primetime. The KET PBS KIDS channel includes popular programs such as Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Odd Squad, Wild Kratts, Dinosaur Train, Splash and Bubbles, Nature Cat, Ready Jet Go! and more.

Survey of parents of children ages 2-6. Maru/Matchbox, Nov. 30 – Dec. 15, 2016.
PBS KIDS is the #1 educational media brand1 and #1 in school readiness2
Building critical skills for success Research confirms that PBS KIDS content helps children build critical skills that enable them to find success in school and in life, while also helping parents increase their own engagement. Additionally, new recommendations from the American Academy of
Pediatrics notes that “well-designed television programs, such as Sesame Street, can improve cognitive, literacy and social outcomes for children 3 to 5 years of age.” For KET PBS KIDS channel program listings, see page 23 or visit KET.org/tv-schedules.
Where to Find It OVER-THE-AIR The new KET PBS KIDS channel is available free overthe-air via antenna to viewers throughout Kentucky: • Ashland WKAS 25.4 • Bowling Green WKGB 53.4 • Covington WCVN 54.4 • Elizabethtown WKZT 23.4 • Hazard WKHA 35.4 • Lexington-Richmond WKLE 46.4 • Louisville WKPC 15.4 • Madisonville WKMA 35.4 • Morehead WKMR 38.4 • Murray-Mayfield WKMU 21.4 • Owensboro-Henderson WKOH 31.4 • Owenton WKON 52.4 • Paducah WKPD 29.4 • Pikeville WKPI 22.4 • Somerset WKSO 29.4 CABLE Spectrum/Time Warner has added the KET PBS KIDS channel to its lineup. See page 23 for details. Other cable systems in Kentucky will soon add the channel. STREAMING A live stream of the channel is available at KET.org/kids and on the free PBS KIDS Video App for Apple and Android devices.
A partner in early childhood education The launch of the 24/7 KET PBS KIDS channel is exciting for many reasons. It gives parents, grandparents, and children considerably more access to quality educational programs, particularly during the evenings. This is especially important when you consider that PBS stations reach more children ages 2-5, more moms with young children, and more children from low-income homes than any other children’s television network. The new channel also enhances the work KET does in early childhood development. The KET Everyday Learning Early Childhood Initiative provides childcare workers and preschool instructors with KET-produced toolkits and hands-on trainings in the areas of pre-literacy, science, math, arts, and social development. It also helps parents take the lessons taught through PBS KIDS programs and extend them beyond the screen. Last year, KET worked with 4,000 early childhood workers across the state, demonstrating how kindergarten-readiness concepts are taught through PBS KIDS programs and through simple, everyday activities. These trainings impacted an estimated 90,000 children. KET also produces interactive early childhood resources utilized in Kentucky and nationally through PBS LearningMedia. These efforts are bringing learning to life for children across the commonwealth and helping ensure they are prepared for success both in school and in life. Sincerely,
Shae Hopkins
KET Executive Director and CEO

GREATWAR 2017 MARKS 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF US ENTRY INTO WWI
I
t’s been 100 years since the United States’ entry into “the war to end all wars.” Now, join American Experience in an epic new three-part, six-hour documentary telling the rich and complex story of World War I through the voices of nurses, journalists, aviators, and the American troops who came to be known as “doughboys” in “The Great War.”

Featuring the voices of Campbell Scott, Blythe Danner, Courtney Vance and others, the series draws on the latest scholarship, including unpublished diaries, memoirs, and letters, to detail experiences of AfricanAmerican and Latino soldiers, suffragists, NativeAmerican “code talkers,” and others whose participation in the war to “make the world safe for democracy” has been largely forgotten. “The Great War” also explores how a brilliant PR man bolstered support for the war in a country hesitant to put lives on the line for a foreign conflict; and how President Woodrow Wilson steered the nation through almost three

years of neutrality, only to reluctantly lead America into the bloodiest conflict the world had ever seen, ultimately claiming 15 million lives. It transformed the United States into a dominant international player. “World War I was the soil from which so many things today really grew, starting with America’s place in the world,” said American Experience’s Mark Samels. “Before the war, America was isolated and uninvolved in world affairs. After the war, America stepped onto the world stage, and that continues today with our troops becoming involved in conflicts around the world. The current debate on the balance between national security
and civil liberties also began with World War I.” “The Great War” also details how the ardent patriotism and determination to support America’s crusade for liberty abroad led to one of the most oppressive crackdowns on civil liberties at home in American history. “The film is not only about what happened 100 years ago,” continued Samels, “But how what happened then transformed our nation and the world in ways still being felt today.”

Wolf Hall on Masterpiece KET Begins Sunday, April 2 • 10/9 pm KET2 Begins Wednesday, April 5 • 10/9 pm The engrossing six-hour miniseries returns! Follow the story of Thomas Cromwell, a brutal blacksmith’s son who rises from the ashes and deftly picks his way through King Henry VIII’s court where “man is wolf to man.” Told from Cromwell’s perspective, the series follows the complex machinations and backroom dealings of the power broker. Anne Boleyn is portrayed by Claire Foy, currently appearing as Queen Elizabeth in the acclaimed series The Crown.
3 Independent Lens: Newtown KET Monday, April 3 • 9/8 pm Explore the aftermath of the deadliest mass shooting of schoolchildren in American history, when 20 first-graders and six of their educators were killed in 2012 in Newtown, Conn. Rather than focusing on those who lost their lives during the shooting at the school, the program instead delves into the lives and homes of those who remain, all of whom have been indelibly changed by the events. With personal access to families, teachers, first responders, and other members of the community directly affected by that tragic day, this program captures how the fallout of gun violence interconnects and propels the town toward introspection, resilience, and action.
19 Nova: Holocaust Escape Tunnel KET Wednesday, April 19 • 9/8 pm KET2 Sunday, April 23 • 7/6 pm For centuries, Vilnius, Lithuania, was one of the most important Jewish centers in the world, earning the title “Jerusalem of the North” — until the Nazis destroyed it and murdered 95 percent of its Jewish population. Now, an international team of archaeologists is trying to recover this lost world, excavating the remains of the synagogue and uncovering a lost escape tunnel dug by Jewish prisoners inside a horrific Nazi execution site.
23 The Magic of the Diary of Anne Frank KET2 Sunday, April 23 • 8/7 pm KET Tuesday, April 25 • 8/7 pm More than 70 years after her death in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, Anne Frank remains an inspiration to millions of people, and her diary is considered one of the most influential books of the 20th century. Featuring heartfelt contributions from a number of famous people and visits to historically significant sites in Germany, Argentina, and the U.S., this program examines why the words of an innocent young girl continue to resonate with so many nearly a century after they were written.
28 Live from Lincoln Center: Simple Gifts—Chamber Music Society at Shaker Village KET Friday, April 28 • 9:30/8:30 pm Witness the performance of inspired American selections amidst the bluegrass countryside of Kentucky at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. The event captures the unique intimacy of a chamber music concert, with cameras and equipment located inside a restored tobacco barn. FRIENDS OF KET DAY AT THE CAPITOL
Gov. Matt Bevin and Curious George
In February, volunteers with the Friends of KET visited their legislators to thank them for supporting KET’s mission.
Majority Floor Leader Rep. Jonathan Shell, R-Lancaster, with KET Friends Board member Nancy Thames.
PBS LearningMedia grows bigger and better for Kentucky educators KET is a leading producing partner in PBS LearningMedia, a free, searchable repository of over 130,000 high-quality classroom and professional-development resources for early childhood, K-12, and adult education, all aligned with content standards. Other contributors include NASA, the National Archives, and the Library of Congress. PBS LearningMedia is funded by the Kentucky Department of Education and KET and is available free to public and private schools, colleges and universities, homeschoolers, parents, and educational agencies and organizations. Kentucky educators can now access new premium content in the repository including more than 6,000 full episodes of popular PBS series such as Liberty’s Kids, Cyberchase, Nature, Nova and Ken Burns’ The Civil War and The Roosevelts.
KET shares PBS LearningMedia at KySTE Kentucky teachers are being empowered by PBS LearningMedia! In early March, KET provided consultations and information at the annual Kentucky Society for Technology in Education (KySTE) conference in Louisville. KET kicked off the event with the third annual Kentucky PBS LearningMedia Summit. Attendees at the Summit learned about the engaging instructional content found on PBS LearningMedia, and how to explore and personalize that content to create media-rich lessons for a diverse range of learners. Simpson Elementary librarian Sam Northern, a 2016 PBS Digital Innovator, spoke about his recent expedition to Antarctica as a Grosvenor Teacher Fellow, and how he’s using PBS LearningMedia with his students. Learn more about PBS LearningMedia at KET.pbslearningmedia.org.

Minority Floor Leader Rep. Rocky Adkins, DSandy Hook, with KET Friends Board members Yvonne Baldwin, left, and Mary Butler.
Regional trainings bring Media Arts technology training to teachers This spring, thanks to a grant from the Kentucky Department of Education, KET Education staff kicked off four regional Media Arts trainings for educators from multiple school districts. The daylong trainings were held in Bowling Green and Whitesburg. Media Arts incorporates elements from drama, dance, music, and visual arts, and also includes technology in the creation and distribution of the product. Media Arts projects involve interactivity between the art and the audience via the use of technology. The trainings gave teachers a chance to get hands-on experience while learning the basics of video production.
YOUR SUPPORT HELPS MAKE KET POSSIBLE Donations help KET purchase PBS programming, costing KET $3 million annually Thanks to our donors, sponsors, and volunteers, KET’s on-air fundraiser ensured that PBS’s programming continues! Donations are still being accepted at KET.org/donate or (800) 866-0366.
TeleFund 2017’s first day began with Valvoline volunteers taking donations all day. Pictured are Daryl Love, left, community relations manager, and Dave Erdmann, business development manager.

Tour park whose owners were dedicated to land stewardship In Dr. Merle and Glema Mahr’s library in their home on the outskirts of Madisonville lies a unique resource illustrating their devotion and connection to a number of national organizations supporting land and water stewardship. Discover the couple’s dedication to land stewardship in Land, Leaders, and Legacies: The Story of Mahr Park. The program details the Mahr’s vision of excellence and why the 265 acres at Hidden Hills Farm are more than just a Land, Leaders and Legaicies park and recreational facility, but a template of stewardship. Today, the park features rolling hills, mature trees, ponds, and a picturesque lake. The facility maintains and preserves a natural environment for native birds, fish, wildlife, plants, and wildflowers. That unique collection of resources at the Mahr home includes works by Rachel Carson, John Muir, Aldo Leopold, and espoused the conservation ideas of Jay N. “Ding” Darling, as well as Kentucky author Wendell Berry, while their home is filled with wildlife artwork by the late Ray Harm.
