BUSINESSMAN-TURNED-ADVOCATE CHAMPIONS EDUCATION IN JEFFERSON COUNTY
Sam Corbett 2
August 2015
L
OUISVILLE’S SAM CORBETT is a problem solver. A former executive, finding creative solutions is a must when your formalwear business revolves around immovable deadlines like wedding dates and proms. When he decided to leave his family business, Sam Meyers Formalwear, he followed a yen that had been building in him for years: to continue his involvement in education, where he’d served on the Jefferson County Public Schools board, on the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence, and with the University of Louisville. “I left the business at the end of 2011. It was the only thing I’d done since I was 15 years old,” said Corbett, whose defining feature is the energy he brings to whatever task is at hand. “I spent 21 years in the tuxedo business and there was something that was just pulling on me,” said Corbett, whose grandfather founded Sam Meyers in 1905. “There was a part of me that said, ‘I want to try something else.’ And I knew that I would end up doing something that was related to education, because I had spent a lot of time as a volunteer.” His first taste was through a school/ business partnership Sam Meyers had with the Youth Performing Arts School in Louisville — a natural fit, he said, given the formal nature of orchestra attire. “That’s how I became exposed to leadership in education,” he remembered — and it lit a fire. Next he threw his hat into the ring to be considered for an unexpired school
“KET IS ONE OF THE FEW VEHICLES, FROM A STATEWIDE PERSPECTIVE, THAT YOU CAN HEAR VIEWPOINTS AND IDEAS RELATED TO EDUCATION.” board seat in Jefferson County in the early 1990s. He went on to run and sat on the board for eight years. “It was the best experience I ever had — and it’s the hardest job in the United States,” he laughed. “You don’t get paid, it’s a full-time job, and someone is always upset.” That experience, which he calls “the purest form of public service,” galvanized him to make a difference to public schools, where he is particularly gripped by its mission to serve all students. “Two of my three children went to public school, and I think the great part about public education is that your child is sitting in the classroom with kids where some are like them and some are totally unlike them,” he said. “And the city today has become so diverse! Something like 100-plus languages are spoken, and it’s really become a kind of melting pot.” Today, Corbett is executive director of the Jefferson County Public Education Foundation, a non-profit organization that exists to create, strengthen, and connect the dots between needs in the public schools and the businesses and individuals who want to help them. “There are a lot of caring, concerned people who are willing to help,” he said. “So the challenge is, how do we find ways to get them

engaged — through their business, their church, their clubs. There is a lot of expertise we could tap into.” That idea man, forged in formalwear, now comes to the fore in his new ventures. “I think I’m very creative in solving problems. I try to take the skillset that I used for many years and try to do the same thing as it relates to public education. You can’t run schools like you run a business, but there are principles that are applicable.” Corbett’s ideas, and his deep understanding of the issues, are enhanced by his attentive viewing of KET’s public affairs and educational issue programs — such as Kentucky Tonight and Education Matters. “KET is one of the few vehicles, from a statewide perspective, that you can hear viewpoints and ideas related to education,” he said. “Just this week [on Kentucky Tonight], the panel included the co-chairs of the House Education Committee, the new executive director for the Prichard Committee, and education analyst for the Bluegrass Institute for Public Policy Solutions. So there’s a great opportunity right there. “What other opportunity is there,” he added, “other than KET, to get that kind of statewide perspective of what’s happening related to education?”

hen you say “Big Blue” in Kentucky, there’s no doubt you’re talking about the University of Kentucky Wildcats. But it’s also a term for the deep blue sea. We in Kentucky can join this big blue nation in experiencing the diversity of the thriving ecosystem in the once-threatened Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary in Big Blue Live, an unprecedented live event airing Aug. 31 through Sept. 2. Big Blue Live brings together scientists, filmmakers and photographers, animal behaviorists, and other experts to document the rejuvenation of Monterey Bay. M. Sanjayan, who appeared in Earth: A New Wild, says this program is an exciting addition to Nature programming. “It’s LIVE! You get to see the ocean life as it happens,” he said. “The diversity will stun you. Here at our doorsteps — at the doorsteps of cities like San Francisco and Los Angles — a revival is going on. I think this event will be illuminating the issues of the ocean in a way never done before, with an immediacy that can be felt and heard, and absorbed by the audience.” Coupled with online streaming and through social media, viewers can watch one of nature’s great “reality shows” delivered through state-of-the-art filming technologies and live reports from air, sea, and below the waves.
“It’s live TV so who knows what will happen? Of course, I am confident that the cutest mammal in the ocean — the sea otter — will make a showing,” he said. “I am hopeful that the blue whale, the largest mammal, or for that matter, largest animal that has ever lived on the planet, will show up. In between, we are going to have everything from sharks to albatrosses. But again, it’s live; I expect to see the unexpected.” The multi-platform event will be anchored by four onair correspondents from a reporting hub at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and from aboard National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research vessels. Part of the amazing story of Big Blue Live is the amazing transformation of Monterey Bay. “Monterey Bay was close to a sewer not that long ago. People could not live there because of the smell,” said Sanjayan. “But they turned it around because some amazing people decided to appreciate the true cost of environmental harm or the true value of nature. Today, it’s a thriving economy, for tourists, farmers, and fishers — all because we realized that people need nature to thrive. It’s living proof that if we act before it’s too late, the resilience of nature will amaze us and the value of nature will surpass our expectations.” KET.org

JFK & LBJ: A Time for Greatness KET Tuesday, Aug. 4 • 9/8 pm President Lyndon Johnson is chiefly remembered for the Vietnam War. But he engineered two of the most important laws Congress ever passed, the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act. This documentary examines how the president worked behind the scenes, using everything he had learned as a longserving senator, to outwit the Southern segregationists who were determined to maintain the racial divide, and to ensure JFK's legacy. 6

HIGHLIGHTS COMING IN SEPTEMBER Newly restored high-def version of Ken Burns’ ‘The Civil War’
N
ext month, KET will air a newly restored high-definition version of the Ken Burns’ epic documentary The Civil War over five consecutive nights beginning Sept. 7 at 9/8 pm on KET. For the restoration, 50,000 feet of the original 16-mm film negative was scanned frame by frame at the resolution used for ultra high definition. This is the first time The Civil War will be seen with the exact same fidelity and framing as the negative that Ken Burns and his co-cinematographers shot more than 25 years ago. “I’m beyond excited,” said Burns.
“For the first time, viewers will see what I saw when I looked through the lens of my camera. It is truly remarkable.” “The Civil War series has never been seen in such visual clarity,” said Daniel J. White, the film’s restorer. “The colors are brighter and you will see more details in the images. With this transfer, it will be preserved at the highest quality for generations to come.” The Civil War attracted an audience of 38.9 million during its premiere in September 1990. It set a record for the highest rated PBS series broadcast, which stands today.

EXPLORE KENTUCKY KET’s ‘Dropping Back In’ tells compelling stories of dropouts Forty million American adults lack a high school diploma. Each year, almost a million more students drop out of school. People without a high school diploma or equivalency are more likely to be unemployed, abuse drugs and alcohol, become teenage parents, and live in poverty. About three-fourths of prison inmates are dropouts. KET’s documentary series Dropping Back In, which has aired nationally, explores the heavy societal and personal costs of dropping out. The series’ five half-hour programs also illuminate how factors ranging from poverty to undiagnosed learning disabilities contribute to the decision to drop out and complicate the challenge of “dropping back in.” This encore of the series begins Monday, Aug. 10 at 10:30/9:30 pm on KET and will include a new program, “Building a Better Life,” airing Sept. 7 on Labor Day. It focuses on the millions of jobs that go unfilled because people lack the skills needed — and what is being done to create apprentice programs. The Dropping Back In story is told through a lens of hope and possibilities, giving voice to those often silent in the debate over adult education — dropouts themselves. You’ll meet people such as Kellie Blair Hardt of Virginia — homeless as a young child, a truant and a troublemaker in high school, today a nationally award-winning teacher. A clear message of the series is that we all can make a difference. Victor Rios, a former gang member and dropout, now a professor and author, notes, “The difference between myself and some of my friends that ended up dead or in prison is that I was fortunate to run into programs and people that cared.” To watch online, go to droppingbackin.org, where there is more information on the series and adult education.
No high school diploma? Don’t let that stop you from reaching your dreams. With help from KET’s Fast Forward, you can quickly chart a new path to becoming college and career ready. Prepare for the GED® test today at KETFastForward.org

The Apollo Wives KET2 Sunday, Aug. 23 • 8/7 pm KET Tuesday, Aug. 25 • 9/8 pm This fascinating documentary looks in detail at what it meant to be an Apollo wife, and what was required of them by their husbands, by NASA, and by the media. In painfully honest interviews, the wives open up about presenting to the world a perfect image of the American Dream; the relentless media intrusion in their lives; difficulties bringing up their children alone, and often in great poverty; and how they coped with the very real possibility that the men they loved may not return alive.
Blackbeard KET Tuesdays, Aug. 18 & 25 • 9/8 pm KET2 Sundays, Aug. 23 & 30 • 9/8 pm This is the true story of Edward Teach, who went on to become the most notorious pirate the world has ever known. He was loved by some, hated by many, feared by everyone and his reign of terror along the east coast of America drove the authorities to put an end to piracy once and for all. Based on the stories of Blackbeard and other pirates, this drama reconstructs a larger-than-life man and the period in which he lived.

American Masters: Carol Burnett: A Woman of Character KET Monday, Aug. 17 • 9/8 pm KET2 Wednesday, Aug. 19 • 8/7 pm America in the 1960s and ’70s was in turmoil – the civil rights struggle, the war in Vietnam, and the sexual revolution defined a nation in conflict. But, everywhere, Americans watched The Carol Burnett Show. For 11 years, this whacky performer yelled like Tarzan and won our hearts, often breaking our hearts, with her characters. Yet, as with so many brilliant comedians, hers was a difficult childhood and a glimpse of something deeper, darker began to emerge in the dramatic career that followed her TV variety show.
American Masters Marvin Hamlish: What He Did for Love KET Monday, Aug. 10 • 9/8 pm Archives and interviews highlight the storied career of Marvin Hamlisch, the go-to composer for film and Broadway producers and one of the most honored. SHORT TAKES Today’s KET: Study confirms impact Recently, in what was described as the “most authoritative study ever done on the impact of Sesame Street,” researchers concluded that the long-running children’s series is directly responsible for helping children do better in school. Surprising? Certainly not to those of us who have long espoused the ability of quality children’s programs to both entertain and educate. Significant? Absolutely, as these landmark results reinforce all that we do in early childhood education. From our rich daytime program schedule to the community trainings and demonstrations we conduct through the Ready To Learn Initiative, our Everyday Learning Collaborative, and more, these engaging and educational programs form the cornerstone of our efforts to ensure all the children of Kentucky are prepared to do well in school. Today, Sesame Street, joined by the many other curriculum-based children’s series from PBS — including SuperWHY!, Daniel Tiger, and Peg+Cat — represent a full spectrum of early childhood learning. Whether used in the home, with a caregiver, or in a preschool, these programs are important tools for ensuring our youngest learners develop the skills they need to enter school ready to achieve and succeed. Sincerely, Shae Hopkins KET Executive Director and CEO 22

New courses help adult educators prepare students for GED ® tests KET has created two free online professional development courses to help adult educators better understand the GED® science and social studies tests. Through partnerships with Kentucky Adult Education and GED Testing Service®, KET secured national trainers to conduct the live instruction. The new self-paced courses, now available in PBS TeacherLine (pbs.org/teacherline), feature video segments from those trainings, as well as strategies and resources that may be used to enhance student performance. Funding for this project was provided in part by the American Graduate Initiative.
